[Bug 355180] Re: [jaunty] screen brightness dims on AC power despite config to leave at 100%

2010-11-09 Thread Faruk
This bug needs to reopen for ubuntu 10.10 amd64, installed by upgrading 10.04.
I can confirm this happens all the time on HP 550 Notebook.
Running gnome-power-manager in verbose mode shows

TI:23:38:21 TH:0x247b0a0FI:gpm-backlight.c
FN:gpm_backlight_brightness_evaluate_and_set,357
 - Key 232 mapped to key brightness-down
 - emitting button-pressed : brightness-down
 - Button press event type=brightness-down
 - Button press event type=brightness-down

So, when ever ac power is reconnected it triggers brightness-down.
Reproducible always.
There no other info I can find, that can be related to this.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

[Bug 673257] [NEW] Please consider renaming the Unity desktop to avoid naming conflict with Unity Linux

2010-11-09 Thread KDulcimer
Public bug reported:

On May 10, 2010, Mark Shuttleworth announced the Unity desktop on his
blog: http://www.markshuttleworth.com/archives/383

At the time, those of us in Unity Linux viewed the announcement with
interest, but after some time, we have come to the conclusion that
Canonical's choice of a name is not good as it causes confusion with our
own project. Therefore, we are asking Canonical (pretty please with
sugar on top) to change the name of the Unity desktop environment.

When we at Unity Linux decided on our name, it was a long, drawn-out
process where we voted and checked suggested names with Google and at
one point I believe we even asked a developer if we could use a title
similar to his defunct distro.

Here is my attempt to answer some objections before they even come up.

Why should Canonical change the name of its desktop? Why don't you just change
the name of your distro?
1. We were here first. (AKA Prior Art)
2. We have invested significant time and effort into our branding.
3. The naming is causing confusion, and since we had the name first, we would
like Canonical to rectify the situation.

You're just being malicious.
We were here first. If anything, I could accuse Canonical of being malicious--
after all, they did take our name. However, I don't think Canonical was or is
trying to be malicious.

One is a DESKTOP, the other is a DISTRIBUTION. They're not the same.
They are not literally the same, but they are more than close enough. I don't
think I have to say that if someone is searching for help with the Unity
desktop on Google, there is a very good chance they would come upon Unity Linux
stuff. We have already had people in our IRC channel asking for help when they
are obviously not using Unity Linux.

Why don't you just let it stand? I mean, there would probably be some extra
Linux traffic coming your way.
Yeah, there would certainly be more traffic, and a random bit here and there
might even prove to be beneficial. However, I think in the end it would be
mostly annoying to both Unity Linux and Ubuntu. People would be in the Ubuntu
help channels asking for help for Unity Linux and vice versa. So please please
please, Canonical, to save you and to save us hassle, rename your desktop. I
know in many ways this is a huge request, but given the fact that a simple
Google search for "Unity Linux" would have shown you that we were already out
there, I don't think I'm being unreasonable.

[Update on F14: Re: [Bug 671893] Re: Rhythmbox 0.13.1 Radio list empty after I entered a new radio]

2010-11-09 Thread Joe Linux
Hello,

I have some more news for you...
Always on my DV8, as I have multiple-boot: Several Windows and several
Linux distros, I went to Fedora 14 64-bits and ran Rhythmbox 0.13.1.
I do the same than very 1st time under U10.10 64-bits but under F14
everything was working properly with RB.
I was able to add few Radio's URL, to test them without any issue. Close
and reopen RB and still working and having your original Radio list plus
mines.
Great!

So, it seems the issue is with U10.10 64-bits and ? But I am not enough
specialist to forsee where the issue could be...

If you need further data, don't hesitate.
Regards.
Joe.

entered a new radio
Date: Tue, 09 Nov 2010 23:12:14 +0100

Bonjour,

1. Yes, it is reproducible.
2. I have properly uninstalled RB using the Ubuntu Software Center
(USC), rebooted my PC and used the same USC for reinstalling RB.
When opening RB, the default Radio list was empty. So, I entered manualy
2 French radios (url) and worked fine.
But I closed RB and when reopening RB within the same session, the Radio
list was again empty.
I have tried several time using either USC or Synaptic, both leading to
the same bad result.
So, at least on my HP Pavilion DV8-1190ef, this issue is reproducible
very simply.
3. Now for listening Internet radio, I am currently using Radio Tray
(0.6.1) which works fine.

If you need further data, don't hesitate.
Thank you for taking time to improve Rhythmbox.
Regards.
Joe

Yes, we have discussed about it, but I would to clean up archive. You
didn't use argument that maybe in future we will reintroduce support for
sparc architecture - it sounds more reasonable. I thought that if Ubuntu
is dropping support for any architecture, then support won't be
recovered anymore.

[Bug 673245] [NEW] Add compat-wireless-2.6.37 package

2010-11-09 Thread Leann Ogasawara
Public bug reported:

SRU Justification:

As part of the linux-backports-modules package, we periodically provide
an updated compat-wireless stack. linux-backports-modules-2.6.35
already has a pending patch to add the 2.6.36 compat-wireless stack.
It's come to our attention that future requests for newer versions of
the compat-wireless stack will be coming down the pipeline. In
preparation, start tracking the 2.6.37 compat-wireless stack.

Impact:

Since linux-backports-modules is an elective install and a 2.6.37
compat-wireless update hasn't existed previously, there should be no
risk of regression.

Test Case: build the linux-backports-modules package and note that a
2.6.37 compat-wireless binary is created.

Regards.
Joe

[Bug 673236] [NEW] maverick toolchain producing unbootable (hanging) kernels

2010-11-09 Thread m4t
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gcc-4.4

when attempting to compile recent vanilla kernels from source (2.6.35.7,
2.6.35.8, 2.6.36), the resulting bzImages all hang at the same point in
the boot process. this doesn't seem to be an error with the kernel
config or source, because using identical kernel source and .config
produces working kernels when compiled inside a debootstrap'd lucid
chroot.

i had originally suspected this had something to do with a specific cpu
setting (CONFIG_MPENTIUMM), but this also happens after changing to the
'generic' CONFIG_M686. i also suspected that perhaps something was
broken with my install. however, a bzImage produced remotely from
someone's fresh 32bit 10.10 install also hung at the exact same place
during boot. compiling using ubuntu's generic .config and patchset
(linux-image-2.6.35-22-generic) produced a working kernel.

the boot failure occurs both on real hardware (ibm t42p) as well as
inside of qemu. the broken bzImages hang at rtc_cmos in qemu, and at
ehci initialization on real hw. the working bzImages from lucid (as they
ought to) end with a kernel panic due to missing rootfs.

the broken bzImages are produced with both kernel-package 12.036 and a
simple 'make' in the kernel source tree.

i had some luck using bzImage/vmlinux with qemu/gdb to see where it was
stuck at, but now the symbols don't seem to match up. i would otherwise
provide this info.

this problem has only appeared since installing 10.10. 8.10, 9.04, 9.10,
and 10.04 did not present this issue. lucid's build environment, used
from a chroot inside maverick, also does not present this issue.
although this bug has been placed under gcc-4.4, maverick's gcc-4.5
package has the same issue.

running gcc 4.4.4's testsuite shows failure in several places. the
binutils testsuite shows no failures.

i've attached a minimized 2.6.36 .config which produces a broken
bzImage.

any insight appreciated.

thanks,
-matt

[Bug 607227] Re: autologin

2010-11-09 Thread Dan Metcalf
Confirmed that the same gdm bug still exists on Mythbuntu 10.10 distro.
On initial startup of gdm service the timed login works just fine, but
after logging out manually it will just sit at the login ID selection
screen. We have tried this on fresh installs with the same effect.
Using either the timedlogin or autologin options we see the same action.
Once a desktop session has been established logging out will leave you
sitting at a login selection screen.

This used to work cleanly on our 9.04 setups right out of the box.

In Bug #499337 the reviewer stated that this is not a bug and invalidated that
bug report:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm/+bug/499337/comments/4
How can one use Ubuntu in a kiosk setup if we can't have autologin / timedlogin
working everytime?

Our timedlogin config example:

r...@tv:/etc/gdm# cat custom.conf
[daemon]
AutomaticLoginEnable=false
AutomaticLogin=mythtv

TimedLoginEnable=true
TimedLogin=mythtv
TimedLoginDelay=3

DefaultSession=mythbuntu

[Bug 626974] Re: ABI change in xorg 1.9 breaks legacy nvidia-96 drivers in Maverick

2010-11-09 Thread Darik Horn
I reverted the patch in jockey that ignores nvidia-96 and put it into
the PPA.

If jockey still doesn't automatically update the xorg.conf file then do
this:

1. Ensure that the nvidia-common package is installed. Jockey needs
nvidia-common to detect nvidia-96 and nvidia-173 hardware.

2. Backup and delete the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file.

3. Toggle the driver in System -> Administration -> Additional Drivers.
(eg: Deactivate, Activate)

4. Check the /var/log/jockey.log file for warnings and errors. This
log file is usually empty unless something is glitched.

[Bug 657335] Re: Chromium browser redirects downloaded pdf files back to itself

2010-11-09 Thread Julien Lavergne
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: chromium-browser

- On Lubuntu 10.10 Beta 2, when I download a pdf file in Chromium, then
- click on it to open it up, the pdf is being redirected back to Chromium
- instead of the pdf viewer.
+ SRU explanation :
+ 1. This bug prevent users from launching directly the pdf viewer when
clicking on a pdf file on Lubuntu, because the default pdf viewer is set for
epdview, the previous pdf viewer installed by default. The new one is evince.
+ 2. The bug was fixed on revision 0.13 on natty, replacing epdfview.desktop by
evince.desktop on default.list
+ 3. Patch is on revision 92 of the lubuntu-default-settings-maverick branch
(see
http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~lubuntu-desktop/+junk/lubuntu-default-settings-maverick/revision/92)
+ 4. TEST CASE: start a fresh install of Lubuntu, try to launch a pdf file by
clicking on it, nothing should happen.
+ 5. I can't see any regression possible.
+
+
+ On Lubuntu 10.10 Beta 2, when I download a pdf file in Chromium, then click
on it to open it up, the pdf is being redirected back to Chromium instead of
the pdf viewer.

This results in Chromium "downloading" the pdf again, this time from the
user's Downloads directory. It creates another copy of the file with
  "(1)" appended to the filename.

Not sure if this is happening with other file types or not, have only
  seen it with pdf files.

[Bug 673232] [NEW] Copy and paste to windows file share via gnome doesn't work

2010-11-09 Thread stef.baly
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick
Nautilus : 2.32.0

A shared windows disk is mounted through a microsoft network. I should
notice that I've got no problem to browse to the disk.

I'm not able to copy and paste files using Nautilus : "Error - invalid
argument" appears everytime. I should notice that folders are created on
my network disk, filename appears but files are empty !

On the other hand, copying files or folders using command line works fine :
cp -R * /home/name/.gvfs/name\$\ sur\ intranet/Data\

Last detail : these bug doesn't occurs on Karmic.

How to solve it ? Is it a samba or a gnome bug ?

Thanks

Stephane

[Bug 673074] Re: there is no way for totem to display its streaming source

2010-11-09 Thread enb
Right click on what? Right clicking anywhere on any of the properties
does not work. You would expect it to tell you where it is when asking
for the properties. Doesn't happen on any of the menus either. If there
is a place where you can right click, then it is in a completely
unintuitive location. And it should do more than just copy the location,
it should be displayable.

[Bug 1674] Re: python bindings are not included from upstream

2010-11-09 Thread Christian Kastner
I'm not that familiar with transitions in Ubuntu. Could somebody more
experienced take a look at this?

The python bindings are provided by libfann2 as package python-pyfann
since Maverick, however this bug refers to libfann1. libfann1 has
already been removed from Debian (and therefore won't get any updates),
but it is still present in Ubuntu.

[Bug 261859] Re: fann development package missing data for examples

libfann-dev (from libfann2) is now available in Maverick, and should be
used instead.

Installing hplip-gui (which includes python-qt4{a} python-qt4-dbus{a})
fixed this for me in Maverick.

[Bug 546697] Re: enable multitouch support on older touchpads, as supported by driver v15.0.9.0

2010-11-09 Thread Dana Goyette
This is not a duplicate! The parent bug is about touchpads that already
had multi-finger capabilities in Windows; this bug is about using a hack
to get multi-finger capabilities on ALL touchpads.

Just in case anyone thinks the driver is only doing emulation, try this
in Windows: go to Mouse control panel, and press alt-shift-i.

One finger tip: 1 finger, pressure 60, width 4.
One finger sideways on the touchpad: it detects 1 finger, pressure 107, width
15.
Two finger tips side-by-side, slightly separated: 2 fingers, pressure 60, width
4. Same is true for 3 fingers.
Two fingers sideways: 2 fingers, pressure 150, width 4.

This is with that special driver.
I'll have to try it on my netbook, which came with multitouch out-of-the-box.

[Bug 629171] Re: Microphone not working in Lenovo 3000 V100

I still have this issue. Why is this marked as fixed when it isn't?

[Bug 659422] Re: Boot failure after upgrading kernel to 2.6.32-25-generic

2010-11-09 Thread Austin Godber
I can confirm this happens on VMware ESX 4.1. I know for certain it
does not happen on older vmware-server 1.0.X series. And when it dumps
me into the initramfs console, I can run udevadm and about 50% of the
time it will segfault.
