[Bug 349767] Re: external USB hard drive disconnects
Like Albert Weichselbraun in comment #51, I had a much better experience with kernel 2.6.31. I could not *really* reproduce the error, and if I did, then it was a much more benign version of the bug (see further down for details). For testing I used version 2.6.31-22.67 (amd64) from the Karmic repos, along with the accompanying header files to let dkms compile the current nvidia drivers (as installed in Maverick). Using the Karmic kernel, my backup solution (backintime) managed to backup the complete set (full backup, not incremental) of several hundred GBs from 3 external USB disks to a 4th one (and the laptop's internal disk, too, but that one never posed a problem even with the buggy kernels). I wrote that I could not *really* reproduce it because the backup dd not run in one go without a problem: at one point in the middle of rsync'ing, all external disks did disconnect, which certainly should not happen. However, they remounted automatically and the whole episode did not lead to the nasty logfile entries about usb issues, which have been posted repeatedly above. The backup continued, and the files that were missed during the disconnect were picked up on a subsequent run. This is remarkably different to the behavior of the other reported kernels, where the disconnect (1) leads to the nasty logfile entries, and (2) after that has happened once, the usb system seems to be in an incoherent state and produces errors all the time even with disks that have not be disconnected before. -- external USB hard drive disconnects https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/349767 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 673127] Re: The Gtk file selector can silently overwite directories
It should be noted that it is not only Firefox. Other apps that use the Gtk file selector can do the same. For example I can also reproduce with Opera. It is also worth noting that if you run Opera under KDE, Opera will use the KDE file selector instead. Under these conditions Opera switches into the directory rather than overwriting the directory with a file. Hence why I interpret this as a bug with the Gtk file selector itself. -- The Gtk file selector can silently overwite directories https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/673127 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 673141] [NEW] Nautilus fails to detect the manual removal of media
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: nautilus Description:Ubuntu 10.10 Release:10.10 nautilus: Installed: 1:2.32.0-0ubuntu1 Candidate: 1:2.32.0-0ubuntu1 Version table: *** 1:2.32.0-0ubuntu1 0 500 http://ca.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ maverick/main amd64 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status I manually changed media from a DVD to a CD without dismounting it first in Nautilus or other application. I was surprised to find that the change of media was ignored by the system. I don't know what happens to the associated interrupts, but they should be serviced. They seem to be ignored. I suspect that Nautilus is being mushroom managed by the kernel and its driver. I don't think it is good software policy to suppress or ignore interrupts having to do with the presence or absence of media. In fact, I think it is totally inappropriate to do so. Operating silliness like this went out with the ATLAS-8. And yes, I am angry. There must be someone who knows this system that can get this right. [Bug 673142] [NEW] No Gnucash main window when running under Unity
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnucash When I launch Gnucash under Unity, the splash screen comes up, as does the tip of the day, and the info window about automatic transactions. [Bug 667208] Re: [i915GM] no top panel no menu bar
Hi, I've got a similar Problem. After upgrading from Ubuntu 10.04 to 10.10 I've could only sometimes see the menubar - was hollow and now fonts were displayed. Since unity needs OpenGL (or something like this?) I installed the ATI fglrx driver via synaptics. Made the problem worse: After rebooting the desktop was blank - only the background picture - the mouse is invisible now, and no menu is shown and clicking has no effect. But the worst: I can switch to a console via CTRL+ATL+F1, but i can't login despite using the right name and password all numbers are interpreted as special characters whether CAPS-LOCK is activated or not - son no chance to log in correctly with a password that contains numbers. Is there a bugfix for this problem(s)? [Bug 673146] [NEW] gvfsd-gphoto2 seems to not free up memory correctly after load
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gvfs gvfsd-gphoto2 seems to not correctly free up memory used after loaded and it is necessary to unmount the camera to free the memory. When my Canon EOS 500D camera is mounted using gvfsd-gphoto2 in Nautilus everything seems to be OK until I enter a folder with photos and videos. gvfsd-gphoto2 then loads previews of all files in that folder, but it seems that it doesn't free up the memory used correctly because it uses hundreds of MBs of memory or even more. When RAM is filled, it then allocates space in swap. Neither RAM nor swap space is released until the camera is unmounted, closing the Nautilus window doesn't help. [Bug 669770] Re: Many windows can not be resized to a smaller size. Unable to select options below
Hicks, many netbooks have this problem, however there is a workaround which allows users with small screens to move around a window to see all it contains. Simply hold down the ALT key and your mouse cursor will become a hand which can grab a window and move it beyond borders set by the screen. The only exception to this is a bug I have seen in Disk Utility which does not allow this type of action - Bug #414107 If the ALT-Click-Drag does not allow you to move the window, you may re- open this bug. ** Changed in: ubuntu Status: New = Invalid -- Many windows can not be resized to a smaller size.
