[Bug 680878] Re: dual head: wrong character display -- font artefacts
I removed the edgers (sudo ppa-purge xorg-edgers) and restart X, but the problem remains. So I set status back to New. ** Changed in: xorg (Ubuntu) Status: Invalid = New ** Tags added: apport-collected ** Description changed: Binary package hint: xorg Originally I posted the problem for emacs23 (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/emacs23/+bug/674488). But the problem is not restricted to this program. It also happens e.g. in OO and unison. Since the update to Maverick Meerkat I got very strange characters in emacs23 (see attachment). The characters are somehow shuffled into each other. This happens if I fast move through a line. If I leave the line or shortly switch to another window, all is fine again. For emacs23 the problem depends on font settings. If I disable anti-aliasing the problem disappears. In OpenOffice (oowriter) there is a strange behaviour: comments are agglomerated at the bottom while scrolling. The problem arises only in dual head mode. When I turn of the laptop screen and only use the external monitor, all is fine. I could not use ubuntu-bug ($ ubuntu-bug xorg) to report this problem. I got the error message: Das Problem kann nicht gemeldet werden: Dies ist kein echtes Ubuntu-Paket... [Bug 682067] [NEW] Not possible to log out and back in again
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: kdm This actually is the result of multiple problems, which must all come together to produce an annoying user-visible failure. 1. With a Radeon card, when logging out, the X server catches a segmentation fault rather than exiting cleanly. This point is actually the least severe of the 3 listed here. With the many hardwares that the X server has to support, it is unavoidable that the occasional segmentation fault happens. 2. When X server exits with a signal, kdm does not start a new session (as it would do on a normal exit). Why does kdm care? Obviously if the server was running for some non-trivial amount of time, it was working well enough for the user, so there is no need to blacklist it. Blacklist it only if it crashes at start, i.e. after running less than a couple of seconds. The result of these 2 points is that when you log out, no login window for the next user pops up. Obvious workaround (or so I thought...): a wrapper script with exit 0 to hide the segmentation fault from kdm. #!/bin/sh /usr/bin/X.real $@ exit 0 Nope, doesn't work, because for some reason, with this in place, kdm, for some weird reason, feels the need to start multiple servers on same display, which obviously fails because only one of them can bind to :0 Notice, there is no backgrounding () anywhere in this script. The variant below manages to start (once), without kdm trying to spawn multiple servers at once: #!/bin/sh exec /usr/bin/X.real $@ (... but obviously it doesn't solve the goal of hiding the segfault from kdm). ... which brings us to number 3: === so somehow kdm is bothered by X being a subprocess of what it launches, rather than the main process. How does it find out? And why does it care? In this case, this extraneous check prevented a simple workaround against a real problem, and for what gain exactly? In the old days, xdm even came with an /etc/X11/xdm/Xserver script (or whatever it was called), which nicely wrapped the server, into which you could add any pre- and postprocessing you wanted, just in case something somewhere else broke. ** Affects: kdebase-workspace (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Not possible to log out and back in again https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/682067 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to kdebase-workspace in ubuntu. -- kubuntu-bugs mailing list kubuntu-b...@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/kubuntu-bugs

[Bug 681872] Re: Greek, Modern (1453-) name contains distracting detail
The Debian bug report has been marked as Won't Fix, because the maintainers don't like to deviate from the official standard. The current naming of Greek is the ISO standard, which can be observed at http://www.loc.gov/standards/iso639-2/php/code_list.php, and they do not want to change that. We won't change the standard. iso-codes is a package that provides a list of names as they are in a standard. Unless one of my comaintainers wants to add the common name hack we had to introduce to deal with the Taiwan issue, I'm not keen to go this way and play with names coming from the standard. There are more oddities in the list. I discovered that the official name for the language with the code 'nld' is Dutch; Flemish, even though Flemish doesn't exist as a separate language. Calling Dutch Flemish makes just as much sense as naming 'en-GB' English; Kentish. Although adhering to an internationally accepted specification saves us work and prevents stepping on sensitive toes, we should consider whether the names used for languages are not confusing or even incorrect. -- Greek, Modern (1453-) name contains distracting detail https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/681872 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

The first my thought was that is lag of video driver for NV videocard. Then, I installed Ubuntu to another laptop, that has ATI videocard. The artefacts are reproduced exactly the same! After I do 'gnome-panel --replace', the artefacts go away. I attached artefacts screenshots, because those make ubuntu weather applet unusable for untutored users! Thanks. [Bug 660240] Re: [P4M800Pro] Xorg freeze on ubuntu 10.10 64bit
I've just installed the package mentioned in comment #16 and can confirm that this package solves the problem I described in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video- openchrome/+bug/678163 for me as well. -- [P4M800Pro] Xorg freeze on ubuntu 10.10 64bit https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/660240 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
