[Bug 408317] Re: Gimp freezes and makes whole system lagging when opening large file
This is really a GIMP bug because of too big memory usage when working with 3.9 MiB jpeg file. I've tested that jpeg file with other image viewing/edidint applications and didn't noticed such big memory usage, like with GIMP. Computer has 3Gb of RAM and no swap. I simply open image with 3 different applications and look how many they use memory with htop. Then I try to zoom in several times, then zoom out and finally - rotate image to the right (90 angle). Results of my tests: Eog 2.30.0-0ubuntu1 : 400Mb (13,5% of total memory) after opening, zoom doesn't increase memory usage, ~800Mb during rotate; Shotwell viewer 0.7.2-0ubuntu2 : ~40Mb (only ~1% of total memory) after opening, 1Gb (33%) after zoom, rotating doesn't increase memory usage (if I rotate before zoom, then memory usage remains ~40Mb !!!); GIMP 2.6.8-2ubuntu1.1 : 1,3 Gb (42% of total memory) after opening, zoom doesn't increase memory usage, increased memory usage during rotate and kernel killed GIMP... So, vietnam isn't right - GIMP uses much more memory for the same image comparing to other programs. Maybe we need to test with latest GIMP version 2.6.11 and report a bug to upstream if memory usage is too big? vietnam wrote on 2010-01-27: Gimp, like other programs, load the file like a BMP and need to load every single pixels. Gimp need to load 14000 X 8000 pixels... that about an image with a size of 924.4 MB. ** Also affects: baltix Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/408317 Title: Gimp freezes and makes whole system lagging when opening large file -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 444501] Re: Incorrect locale settings for Lithuania
As I am a frequent traveler I think it would make more sense to put location related info into locale settings and not language. [Bug 685820] [NEW] Plese upgrade golly to version 2.2 (upstream)
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: golly New upstream release of golly (2.2): Changelog: * Golly supports bounded grids with various topologies (plane, torus, Klein bottle, etc.). Such grids are created by adding a special suffix to the usual rule string. The details are in Help Bounded Grids. * Two new script commands, getwidth and getheight, return the size of the current grid. * The new scripts, make-torus.py and make-torus.pl, can be used to convert the current selection into a toroidal universe. * Any BOARD and WRAP settings in an MCell file are now obeyed (e.g. Bloomerang.mcl). * Golly can record and play back a pattern's timeline, a sequence of steps saved by the new Start Recording item in the Control menu. Use the Delete Timeline item to delete a timeline. Timelines are supported by all the hashlife-based algorithms (ie. all except QuickLife). * Show Timeline in the View menu toggles the new timeline bar below the viewport window. * If a timeline exists when you save a .mc file then all the steps will be stored in the file. On opening such a file, Golly will load the timeline and automatically show the timeline bar. * Multi-color icons are supported and allow both icon and color information to be stored in the one file (more details here). * Rule tables now support hexagonal and oneDimensional neighborhoods and the permute symmetry. * Added a section on naming conventions for .table and .tree files. * Added a new Python script, make-ruletree.py, that allows you to write rules in Python and have them installed in the form of .tree files. See the comments at the top of the script. * New script: RuleTableToTree.py, that converts rule tables to trees. It provides emulation for several neighborhoods not natively supported by Golly: triangularVonNeumann, triangularMoore, Margolus, etc. More details here. * New Turmite scripts, e.g. Turmite-gen.py, for generating rule trees and icons for relative- and absolute-movement turmites on square, hexagonal and triangular grids. * The goto.py script is much faster (thanks to PM 2Ring). * Hitting escape aborts a script that has called a lengthy run() or step() command. * Langtons-Ant.table has been replaced with Langtons-Ant.tree. The new rule is faster, handles multiple ants correctly, and matches most other implementations of this CA. * Reorganized the Patterns folder: moved Conway's Life patterns into Life subfolder, moved rule subfolders out of Other-Rules to top level under Patterns, added Life-Like folder. * Added new Turmite patterns, e.g. WormTrails.rle. * Other new patterns: golly-ants.rle, Langtons-Ant.rle, JvN-loop-replicator.rle.gz, Herschel-conduit-stamp-collection.rle, Boustrophedon-replicator.rle. * Increased the maximum base step from 10,000 to 2,000,000,000. * Help Keyboard Shortcuts lists unassigned actions at the end. * The drawing state can be changed by creating keyboard shortcuts for two new actions called Next Higher State and Next Lower State (see Preferences Keyboard). * You can turn off the beep sound by unticking the option at the bottom of Preferences Edit. * Loading a pattern won't proceed if the save changes dialog appears and you select Save but then decide to cancel the save pattern dialog. * Fixed bug that caused cells to be created in the wrong location when editing very large patterns. * Fixed bug drawing incorrect selection rectangle if very large. * Fixed cursor problem if the shift key is used in a keyboard shortcut to open a dialog/window. * Fixed weird bug on Mac that could cause the viewport to lose keyboard focus after clicking in the layer bar's delete layer button. * Fixed undo history getting out of sync if you tried to reset to a saved starting pattern that had been deleted. * Fixed a bug drawing incorrect icons when layers are stacked. * Fixed a bug not updating the paste image when colors are inverted. * Fixed a problem with the hash() command in a multi-state universe. * Fixed problems using a keyboard shortcut or menu command while a script is running. * Dropped support for Mac OS 10.3.9. Ideally we'd get this into Debian and sync it down, however this would be good to get into Natty. ** Affects: golly (Ubuntu) Importance: Wishlist Status: Confirmed ** Affects: golly (Debian) Importance: Unknown Status: Unknown ** Changed in: golly (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided = Wishlist ** Changed in: golly (Ubuntu) Status: New = Confirmed ** Bug watch added: Debian Bug tracker #605935 http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=605935 ** Also affects: golly (Debian) via http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=605935 Importance: Unknown Status: Unknown -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu.

[Bug 685596] Re: users-admin edit dialogs don't show up
Ah, sorry, I didn't know you weren't using GNOME. The gnome-settings- daemon part is not essential at all: the idea was only to use the PID of a process that is known to be running - you can use any program name here. The polkitd log contains the explanation to your problem: ** (polkitd:1592): DEBUG: subject is in session /org/freedesktop/ConsoleKit/Session2 (local=1 active=0) Your session is not considered as active. Are you working over VNC or another remote desktop system? This is the usual cause of this issue, there's a bug 187585 about that. So the current bug is that users-admin doesn't report correctly when authentication couldn't be obtained. The rest is a problem elsewhere. It shouldn't be hard to fix at all, would you try to write a patch? Else I'll try to do it myself, but I'm not making any promise. ** Changed in: gnome-system-tools (Ubuntu) Importance: Medium = Low ** Changed in: gnome-system-tools (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete = Triaged ** Summary changed: - users-admin edit dialogs don't show up + users-admin doesn't report error when PolicyKit authentication fails -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/685596 Title: users-admin doesn't report error when PolicyKit authentication fails -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 124406] Re: Keyboard keys get stuck and repeat (Feisty, Gutsy)
I'm seeing this on lucid on one desktop machine and one Dell Inspiron - particularly frustrating as my job entails staying connected at work during office hours. I do not, ever, use or touch the windows key. Some or all of the following behaviour might be coincidence, but it might contain useful information, or be worth a try for other users. Probably not a good idea for me to try and investigate it now, as it's already stopped me working once today. Quite often I will be typing quickly and will lock the desktop before I realise it's happened. Restarting X precipitously is hugely undesirable for my work. My current workaround is to ctrl-alt F$whatever and try to login, but unfortunately that breaks sporadically too and I end up typing ^[l^[o^[g^[i^[n and presumably ^[p^[a^[s^[s^[w^[o^[r^[d. If I'm able to log in before I run out of ttys, the problem tends to go away for a while. Hi Gaurav, At which point is serial console not working for you? Is this from Grub, or plain console over serial? [Bug 427775] Re: ntpdate.dhcp always ignored
One issue with this is that gnome-system-tools/system-tools-backends is set up to edit /etc/ntp.conf by default (although it's not obvious to me that it does so quite correctly, but anyway ...). Perhaps it would be more straightforward for /etc/network/if-up.d/ntpdate to fall back to /etc/default/ntpdate.dhcp if it doesn't find any ntp.conf-style server configuration? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/427775 Title: ntpdate.dhcp always ignored -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 83604] Re: ntpdate 1:4.2.2.p4+dfsg-1ubuntu2 has a flawed configuration file.
Mika's patch is certainly still applicable in Natty. I think I'm going to go ahead and apply that; it seems common to have an empty /etc/ntp.conf due to this (I had one myself) and this is an easy workaround. There's a separate bug 427775 for more general logic problems with /etc/network/if-up.d/ntpdate, and a separate bug 583994 for replacing ntpdate altogether. I'm also going to reopen the system-tools-backends task on this bug, due to this comment in the original bug report: it defaults to the ntp servers defined in /etc/ntp.conf, an empty file; which makes debconf to *not* create a proper /etc/ntp.conf if one decided to install ntpd on a whim (It's actually dpkg, not debconf, but the basic point stands.) Because of this, system-tools-backends should take care not to create /etc/ntp.conf as an empty file if it does not already exist. ** Changed in: system-tools-backends (Ubuntu) Status: Invalid = Triaged ** Changed in: system-tools-backends (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided = Medium -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/83604 Title: ntpdate 1:4.2.2.p4+dfsg-1ubuntu2 has a flawed configuration file. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 83604] Re: ntpdate 1:4.2.2.p4+dfsg-1ubuntu2 has a flawed configuration file.
Mika, I'm dropping the debian/ntpdate.default part of your patch. It's correct, and I agree that all other things being equal this documentation should be brought up to date, but it's going to be very common to have modified the NTPSERVERS line that immediately follows it (or to be upgrading a system where somebody else modified that line), and changing that text would I think result in a lot of dpkg conffile prompts. I'd rather avoid that when it isn't strictly necessary. While applying this patch, I'm also going to make ntp.preinst check for an empty /etc/ntp.conf on fresh installation and remove it, to work around this system-tools-backends bug. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/83604 Title: ntpdate 1:4.2.2.p4+dfsg-1ubuntu2 has a flawed configuration file. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 683345] Re: Acer Travelmate 5520G - failure to wake from suspend
Hi, unfortunately I cannot reproduce this bug anymore, I think it is because I was trying to find a way to disable the password prompt window (screen lock) which appears after I wake from suspend. I managed to get rid of it by using gconf-editor. Probably this was a bug in gnome itself? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/683345 Title: Acer Travelmate 5520G - failure to wake from suspend -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 661664] Re: After performing a search, highlight the first result
Thanks for the report. USC used to pre-select the first search result, but this was changed because it was against the spec (bug 524289). The reason I had specified no rows should be selected by default is that I thought selecting the first row would distract people into choosing it when it wasn't actually the row they wanted. We have now done two sets of user testing covering Ubuntu Software Center, and no-one that I've seen in the videos has been confused by none of the items being selected by default. We will do more testing this week, and I will ask specifically for a task that should result in a search, so that we get a bigger sample. In the meantime, though, I'd rather not change this based on one self-report. A reasonable objection would be that pre-selecting would still save a click, and I don't know whether pre-selecting actually is confusing. If someone could make a PPA in which the only change is that USC pre- selects the first search result, we could run a user test of that too. ** Changed in: software-center (Ubuntu) Status: New = Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/661664 Title: After performing a search, highlight the first result -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 685861] [NEW] Autohide option should be more like Intellihide
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: unity Having the auto-hide option is very handy, but intellihide always seemed to work better. The only reason I want auto-hide is so I can have back those 58 (or so) pixels occupied by the launcher. * On my 1024x600 screen I can have a full 1024 pixels for my web browser * If the only window in view doesn't need the full width (say and empathy chat window) I want the launcher still there for quick access. * It makes it easier to see at a glance what apps are running and switch between apps * Helps w/ workspace switcher as I don't have to go into the upper-left corner then down to workspace switcher * Unity doesn't change modes if I switch to a larger external monitor where most (if not all) windows don't need to be maximised Basically, I want the launcher visible unless I need that space.
