[Bug 287428] Re: Menu key emits XF86WakeUp on Thinkpad X61s

2010-12-08 Thread Paul Sladen
It's not really a bug. /is/ the wakeup key when the machine is
suspended. If anyone wants to map it to other functions, then that's
okay, but being able to do that is not universal... on ThinkPads
and LenovoPads is a magical/special key. If only generates its own code
if not combined with any of the other magic (blue highlighted) key
combinations and that is more of a fluke than anything.

[Bug 687535] Re: upstart loses track of ssh daemon after reload ssh

2010-12-08 Thread AlainKnaff
> Alain, I understand your frustration. think a little more serious than
Low,

Thanks for your insight.

> as existence of a workaround only barely mitigates the impact of this.

Just a note about this workaround: kill -9 `pidof sshd` will "saw off
the branch on which you're sitting" if you happen to manage the system
remotely. A safer workaround would be kill -9 `cat /var/run/sshd.pid`

> The problem, I think, is that we're using expect fork

I think what's definitely needed is a way to make upstart track
processes by pidfile.

> and I'm not sure why, when sshd has -D

Indeed, that seems to work (just tested it). So, why does ssh fork on
reload in the case without -D, if it works without this fork with -D?

> I'm not going to mark it Invalid yet though.

Why do you think this bug should be marked invalid (/etc/init/ssh.conf
is part of the openssh-server .deb)? Especially after basically agreeing
with me... In general, in Ubuntu, triagers are far too quick to mark
bugs as invalid, leading to situations where real problems still aren't
fixed in the next release, or problems in LTS releases go unfixed for
over a year.

> that we should always track the children as the main process.

This is tricky for processes such as ssh, as upstart might end up accidentally
tracking one particular session, rather than the master. Just imagine if a user
logs in at exactly the moment where the admin issues a reload ssh. Init would
then not know which child to track (new master, or the session of the user who
just logged in).
And in the case of squid, upstart would not even know that something is amiss
as here the issue is about some intermediate process _not_ exiting when it
should, so upstart would not know that something is amiss until after the first
reload (... causing that first reload to be ignored...).

A safer alternative would be to optionally track by pidfile (which could
be monitored by inotify, and re-read after a child exits). Of course,
existence of pid listed in pidfile should be verified by sending it a -0
signal, so that upstart wouldn't get confused by stale pid files.

[Bug 571392] Re: package bcmwl-kernel-source 5.60.48.36 bdcom-0ubuntu3 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2010-12-08 Thread Christophe LAVARENNE
Turnaround first step: under live session, connect ethernet wire to
download Wifi Broadcom restricted driver: OK.

But then, trying to install Ubuntu10.10 from live session, got error
"package bcmwl-kernel-source 5.60.48.36+bdcom-0ubuntu5 failed to
install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned
error exit status 1": KO, installation failed.

Turnaround second step: instead of trying to install from live session,
reboot from usb boot drive, with ethernet wire connected, and install
directly from boot menu (without launching live session): OK, install
succeeds.

[Bug 123773] Re: 'SIOCSIFFLAGS: Cannot assign requested address' when setting up ip alias

2010-12-08 Thread DinkyDogg
Problem still exists in Ubuntu 10.04 server. Removing package wireless-
tools did not help. Neither did removing "auto eth0:0".

r...@dinkydogg:~# ifup eth0:0
udhcpc (v0.9.9-pre) started
SIOCSIFFLAGS: Cannot assign requested address
Sending discover...
Sending select for 128.12.130.93...
Lease of 128.12.130.93 obtained, lease time 172800
Resetting default routes
SIOCADDRT: No such device
adding dns 171.64.7.121
adding dns 171.64.7.55
adding dns 171.64.7.77
ssh stop/waiting
ssh start/running, process 6143

After doing this, eth0:0 does NOT show up in ifconfig. However, trying
ifup again results in:

r...@dinkydogg:~# ifup eth0:0
ifup: interface eth0:0 already configured

Doing ifdown results in:

r...@dinkydogg:~# ifdown eth0:0
SIOCSIFFLAGS: Cannot assign requested address

But then I'm able to bring it back up with ifup.

What the heck... Any ideas?

is unsuitable for use with 'expect fork' or 'expect daemon', so this
begs the question, why can't we disable daemonization without disabling
all SMP?

Anyway, that is a problem for 'squid3', if/when it gets converted to
upstart. I like Alain's idea for using -N to solve squid 2.x's issue
now.

[Bug 604415] Re: nautilus tries to open windows executables with file roller instead of wine

2010-12-08 Thread Scott Ritchie
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 351429 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/351429

This is not a Wine bug, it's a file-roller bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/file-roller/+bug/351429

Wine already asks for the association (that's why it's on the right
click open with menu), the problem is that file-roller is already on the
system taking that slot.

[Bug 665944] Re: System takes too long to activate wifi on resume

2010-12-08 Thread Justin Husted
I've attached various log files, annotated with blocks of
==.  Hopefully this is enough?

I didn't leave the laptop to sleep overnight, since this reproduces easily
every time. I just disabled my special "iwlist scan"
script.

The most interesting logs look like syslog, daemon.log, and perhaps pm-
suspend.log.

Thanks.

[Bug 685596] Re: users-admin doesn't report error when PolicyKit authentication fails

2010-12-08 Thread Eliah Kagan
I should be able to do the patch, but I'd like to take a look at the
source and get back to you. You classified the importance as low...is it
OK if I take another few days before posting again?

As for why my session is not considered active, I'm not sure. I am not
connecting remotely. The system where I'm experiencing the problem is a
VMware virtual machine (created by installing lubuntu-desktop onto a
Natty Alpha 1 command-line system). But I have another natty virtual
machine (where I installed ubuntu-desktop and then lubuntu-desktop onto
a Natty Alpha 1 command-line system), and it does not have the problem.
Both machines have the same version of the VMware drivers installed.
I'll look through policykit's listed bugs to see if my situation is
documented.

Speaking of Lubuntu: I noticed that, unlike ubuntu-desktop, the lubuntu-
desktop metapackage has not removed gnome-system-tools as a dependency
in natty (http://packages.ubuntu.com/natty/lubuntu-desktop). Lubuntu is
not an one of Canonical's official Ubuntu derivatives, so arguably this
is not a compelling reason to consider users-admin "not phased out" as
of natty. But it has occurred to me that unless the Lubuntu project is
planning to replace gnome-system-tools with something else, a number of
users might continue relying on users-admin for some time.

[Bug 687535] Re: upstart loses track of ssh daemon after reload ssh

2010-12-08 Thread Clint Byrum
Also this is not really a new bug in upstart. It is related to bug
#530779 which causes issues when the parent dies, but its not the same
issue, and in fact, the proc connector probably wouldn't help because
the proc connector still doesn't solve the problem of knowing when this
fork is actually a good one that needs to be followed as the main
process versus a fork of a child that just needs to be reaped.

I'm not going to mark it Invalid yet though. I'd like to get some
Upstart experts' opinions on whether or not it makes sense to solve
this, and really, bug #530779, by simply saying if the process we're
tracking forks, then quits, that we should always track the children as
the main process.

[Bug 497546] Re: Microphones not working on Dell Vostro 320

2010-12-08 Thread David Henningsson
@Alex, to check if this is easily SRUable for Maverick, could you repeat
the test with a clean installation, that is:

1) Install Maverick
(Do NOT install daily ALSA snapshots)
2) Add the following line to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf <--- this line is
new compared to the previous instruction
options snd-hda-intel model=ideapad
3) Reboot
4) Try again and indicate independently whether
 - headphones are working
 - internal mic is working
 - external mic is working

SRUing this into Lucid is likely to be harder, since the ideapad model
wasn't there at the time...

[Bug 687692] [NEW] Realtek 8191SEvB wireless card drops connections and can't reconnect without reboot

2010-12-08 Thread Joseph Garvin
Public bug reported:

I just purchased a Thinkpad 410s which for the most part Ubuntu works
with fantastically out of the box (suspend and hibernate both work, 3D
works, sound works). But the wifi occasionally gets disconnected, and
when that happens it becomes impossible to reconnect without a reboot --
network manager will ask for the key as if it had been rejected, and
then if I click ok it will try for awhile and eventually say I'm
disconnected. I primarily have seen this when connecting to a WPA
protected network, but I believe it's also happened on an unprotected
network (where it doesn't ask for a key obviously but still can never
reconnect).

I played with toggling networking/wireless in the network manager
context menu but it didn't have any effect on whether I could reconnect.
The laptop also has a physical switch for turning the wireless on and
off, but it made no difference either. Here's the identifying snippet
from lspci for my card:

[Bug 687689] [NEW] Audacity ruins bluetooth

2010-12-08 Thread nate m
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: audacity

Apparently Audacity is not smart enough to know that it's running under
a Gnome environment. Everything in terms of audio devices is managed
quite well with pulseaudio, bluetooth-applet, and other Gnome desktop
infrastructure. It tries to hard and breaks it. It tries to hack into my
bluetooth in a vain attempt to find a headset or something like that and
it ruins my bluetooth support in the desktop. I am no longer able to
send files or use bluetooth in anyway.

First thing it does when you launch it is that it does nothing. It'll
just hang. You click on the icon in the menu and you won't get any
feedback. Even if you run it from the command line it will give no
feedback and display no errors. It just hangs.

Then you kill it and restart it a couple times and it launches successfully.
Sorta. Besides the globalmenu bug reported in another report it displays this
error on my terminal:

At that point my bluetooth support is broken and thus Audacity will
successfully open. After hitting ctrl-f to work around the globalmenu
bug (even though I am not using global menu) I can then edit files and
such. Save them. Everything works.

Of course I can no longer connect to the internet through my phone, send
files, upload ringtones, use my bluetooth headset, etc. To work around
you can remove the USB bluetooth adapter if you use a external one, plug
it back in, and launch bluetooth-applet from the command line and it
should be working again.

It's not the end of the world, but Audacity should be configured to work
properly in the default environment.

I suggest eliminating Alsa and bluetooth support and have it not try to
fight proper daemons handle it as they do a much better job. At least
with PA and Bluetooth. I don't know how well Jack supports bluetooth
audio devices, but Audacity really should not be allowed to do this sort
of thing. I understand that it seems like a nice feature to be able to
use a headset outside of Gnome, but it seems to be fundamentally
incompatible with having a bluetooth adapter that is able to work with
any other device.

For people that may run into this problem in the future through Google or
whatever here is two work arounds I suggest:

1. Remove or otherwise disable all your bluetooth radio prior to
attempting to run Audacity.

2. If you forget to do that and Audacity breaks your ability to use
bluetooth then remove the bluetooth audio device from your computer,
plug it back in, and either log out/log in or start bluetooth-applet
manually from the command line or 'alt-f2'. If your using internal
bluetooth then try turning it off and on. If that fails then you will be
forced to reboot.

Thank you for your time and your patience. Keep in mind that as long as
this bug exists you will probably have people complaining that either
Audacity won't launch or will try to file bug reports against

[Bug 687535] Re: upstart loses track of ssh daemon after reload ssh

2010-12-08 Thread Clint Byrum
Alain, I understand your frustration. This is actually I think a little
more serious than Low, as existence of a workaround only barely
mitigates the impact of this.

The problem, I think, is that we're using expect fork, and I'm not sure
why, when sshd has -D, and its clearly not reliable for this instance,
since the daemon regularly forks and exits.

Raising importance to High, as the reload command *must* be reliable for
sshd, as failure of sshd could result in the system being totally
unmanageable.

with OpenOffice, as the doc displays correcly on windows and in adobe

[Bug 687684] [NEW] Authentication dialog does not receive focus when clicking the install button

2010-12-08 Thread Robert Roth
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-center

Steps I have made:
1) Entered 'xpdf' in the search box
2) Clicked install on the XPDF list item in the result list (not from the XPDF
details page)

Expected behaviour:
-Authentication dialog pops up and password entry is focused to be able to
start typing your password as soon as possible
What happened?
-Authentication dialog popped up above software center, but unfocused, so I had
to click on it to be able to enter my password

2010-12-08 Thread Robert Roth
I have checked on Maverick using OpenOffice 3.2.1, and it seems that the
problem is not with the openoffice backend, because I have checked the
pdf opening with Evince, XPdf and adobe reader 9 available in Software
center. Only adobe reader renders it fine. See the screenshots attached
for each application, and the test pdf to check for yourself.

[Bug 272094] Re: [upstream] [3.2] 'Save-Discard-Cancel'-dialog isn't focused when closing with Alt-F4

2010-12-08 Thread Robert Roth
I have just checked with OO.o 3.2.1-7ubuntu1 on Maverick, and this is
not reproducible. I am not using Compiz, just the plane old Metacity.
Can anyone confirm that this has been fixed indeed?

[Bug 683084] Re: Global menu doesn't work well with more than one screen

2010-12-08 Thread Jason Smith
I know I am jumping into this kind of late but I had a minor brainstorm.

It seems to me that the case of the huge monitor is of course important,
it is also less common. Multiple monitors however is indeed quite
common. My solution is as follows:

1) The top bar only extends across the primary monitor
2) When a window is on the primary monitor, its menus are displayed where they
are expected
3) When a window is on the secondary monitor, a second menubar slides in from
the top of that monitor as an overlay (maybe nice rounded edges, whatever). The
menus are held in there. Window decorations could be designed to make sure this
looks clean with maximized windows. The transient bar should look a little
different from the primary bar to re-enforce that it is not a panel, just a
container for menus.

In this solution there is no permanent bar across the top of the
secondary monitor (a transient one will show if needed). Mouse travel
times are reduced dramatically and application interactions are properly
contained into a single monitor. Oh, and it's pretty easy to do :)

[Bug 643836] Re: Desktop icon text hard to read on white backgrounds

2010-12-08 Thread Vish
Yao Ziyuan : I'm not convinced that the suggested gtkrc fix is better.
Yes, it does make the words clearer, but IMO, the visual outcome doesnt
seem more pleasing. We could very well minimize this problem by not
shipping with a very light wallpaper.

The change you suggest cannot be done in nautilus and would need design
consideration. Could you file a separate bug in the light-themes ? We
can get a design review and consider it for a temporary fix.

[Bug 687678] [NEW] Tab titles are not saved between sessions

2010-12-08 Thread Lee Feistel
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

When gnome-terminal is closed and restarted, such as when Ubuntu is shut
down and restarted, the session is resumed with each tab that was open
previously being reopened and the current working directory being set
back to the previous location. This feature is quite useful when there
are many opened tabs in a session, but that session must be interrupted
for a system reboot (such as when updates are installed). Unfortunately,
each time this happens, it is necessary to go back and manually reset
each tab title because the titles are not persisted. The tab title is
just as important as the current directory information in this context,
and should be saved along with it.

[Bug 333201] Re: Virtual machine soft lockup - CPU gets stuck for XX seconds

2010-12-08 Thread Stephan
Just a thought... You said you changed
/sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor

That goes back to the normal setting on boot.

Have you had the issue since you did this, and did you make it
permanent?

Also, was it on the guest, or host, or both that you did this on?

[Bug 687675] [NEW] yelp (the Ubuntu help application) should autostart for first-time users.

2010-12-08 Thread Matt Sturgeon
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: yelp

One nice idea ive seen (usually poorly implemented) in other operating systems,
is a "Welcome Screen".
Well, the problem with a welcome screen is that it is usually there for the
sole purpose of saying "Hi" on your first login.
Why not simply use the Help Application (in Ubuntu's case yelp) for such a
task, it is simple, informative, and already included! (but its rarely found by
new users!).

The "New to Ubuntu?" topic in the help documentation, is perfect for this job
of introducing new users to Ubuntu, although, unfortunately, i dont believe the
users who need to read it, even know it exists!
- solution? Autostart, for first-time users (if possible including a checkbox
to activate/deactivate the autostart on later logins).

 * yelp should autostart for first time users, and open up the "Welcome
to Ubuntu" page.

This will give new users the opportunity to read the brief introduction,
and following pages, that are designed for them, without getting lost
trying to do something simple, or (ironically) even looking for the help
files!
