[Bug 687535] Re: upstart loses track of ssh daemon after reload ssh
> Alain, I understand your frustration. think a little more serious than Low, Thanks for your insight. > as existence of a workaround only barely mitigates the impact of this. Just a note about this workaround: kill -9 `pidof sshd` will "saw off the branch on which you're sitting" if you happen to manage the system remotely. A safer workaround would be kill -9 `cat /var/run/sshd.pid` > The problem, I think, is that we're using expect fork I think what's definitely needed is a way to make upstart track processes by pidfile. > and I'm not sure why, when sshd has -D Indeed, that seems to work (just tested it). So, why does ssh fork on reload in the case without -D, if it works without this fork with -D? > I'm not going to mark it Invalid yet though. Why do you think this bug should be marked invalid (/etc/init/ssh.conf is part of the openssh-server .deb)? Especially after basically agreeing with me... In general, in Ubuntu, triagers are far too quick to mark bugs as invalid, leading to situations where real problems still aren't fixed in the next release, or problems in LTS releases go unfixed for over a year. > that we should always track the children as the main process. This is tricky for processes such as ssh, as upstart might end up accidentally tracking one particular session, rather than the master. Just imagine if a user logs in at exactly the moment where the admin issues a reload ssh. Init would then not know which child to track (new master, or the session of the user who just logged in). And in the case of squid, upstart would not even know that something is amiss as here the issue is about some intermediate process _not_ exiting when it should, so upstart would not know that something is amiss until after the first reload (... causing that first reload to be ignored...). A safer alternative would be to optionally track by pidfile (which could be monitored by inotify, and re-read after a child exits). Of course, existence of pid listed in pidfile should be verified by sending it a -0 signal, so that upstart wouldn't get confused by stale pid files. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/687535 Title: upstart loses track of ssh daemon after reload ssh -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Amos, if I understand you right, there's no way to properly disable daemonization in squid 3.2+? [Bug 685596] Re: users-admin doesn't report error when PolicyKit authentication fails
I should be able to do the patch, but I'd like to take a look at the source and get back to you. You classified the importance as low...is it OK if I take another few days before posting again? As for why my session is not considered active, I'm not sure. I am not connecting remotely. The system where I'm experiencing the problem is a VMware virtual machine (created by installing lubuntu-desktop onto a Natty Alpha 1 command-line system). But I have another natty virtual machine (where I installed ubuntu-desktop and then lubuntu-desktop onto a Natty Alpha 1 command-line system), and it does not have the problem. Both machines have the same version of the VMware drivers installed. I'll look through policykit's listed bugs to see if my situation is documented. Speaking of Lubuntu: I noticed that, unlike ubuntu-desktop, the lubuntu- desktop metapackage has not removed gnome-system-tools as a dependency in natty (http://packages.ubuntu.com/natty/lubuntu-desktop). Lubuntu is not an one of Canonical's official Ubuntu derivatives, so arguably this is not a compelling reason to consider users-admin "not phased out" as of natty. But it has occurred to me that unless the Lubuntu project is planning to replace gnome-system-tools with something else, a number of users might continue relying on users-admin for some time. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/685596 Title: users-admin doesn't report error when PolicyKit authentication fails -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 687535] Re: upstart loses track of ssh daemon after reload ssh
Also this is not really a new bug in upstart. It is related to bug #530779 which causes issues when the parent dies, but its not the same issue, and in fact, the proc connector probably wouldn't help because the proc connector still doesn't solve the problem of knowing when this fork is actually a good one that needs to be followed as the main process versus a fork of a child that just needs to be reaped. I'm not going to mark it Invalid yet though. I'd like to get some Upstart experts' opinions on whether or not it makes sense to solve this, and really, bug #530779, by simply saying if the process we're tracking forks, then quits, that we should always track the children as the main process.

@Alex, to check if this is easily SRUable for Maverick, could you repeat the test with a clean installation, that is: 1) Install Maverick (Do NOT install daily ALSA snapshots) 2) Add the following line to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf <--- this line is new compared to the previous instruction options snd-hda-intel model=ideapad 3) Reboot 4) Try again and indicate independently whether - headphones are working - internal mic is working - external mic is working SRUing this into Lucid is likely to be harder, since the ideapad model wasn't there at the time... -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/497546 Title: Microphones not working on Dell Vostro 320 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 687692] [NEW] Realtek 8191SEvB wireless card drops connections and can't reconnect without reboot
Public bug reported: I just purchased a Thinkpad 410s which for the most part Ubuntu works with fantastically out of the box (suspend and hibernate both work, 3D works, sound works). But the wifi occasionally gets disconnected, and when that happens it becomes impossible to reconnect without a reboot -- network manager will ask for the key as if it had been rejected, and then if I click ok it will try for awhile and eventually say I'm disconnected. I primarily have seen this when connecting to a WPA protected network, but I believe it's also happened on an unprotected network (where it doesn't ask for a key obviously but still can never reconnect). I played with toggling networking/wireless in the network manager context menu but it didn't have any effect on whether I could reconnect. The laptop also has a physical switch for turning the wireless on and off, but it made no difference either. [Bug 687689] [NEW] Audacity ruins bluetooth
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: audacity Apparently Audacity is not smart enough to know that it's running under a Gnome environment. Everything in terms of audio devices is managed quite well with pulseaudio, bluetooth-applet, and other Gnome desktop infrastructure. It tries to hard and breaks it. It tries to hack into my bluetooth in a vain attempt to find a headset or something like that and it ruins my bluetooth support in the desktop. I am no longer able to send files or use bluetooth in anyway. First thing it does when you launch it is that it does nothing. It'll just hang. You click on the icon in the menu and you won't get any feedback. Even if you run it from the command line it will give no feedback and display no errors. It just hangs. Then you kill it and restart it a couple times and it launches successfully. Sorta. Besides the globalmenu bug reported in another report it displays this error on my terminal: $ audacity bt_audio_service_open: connect() failed: Connection refused (111) bt_audio_service_open: connect() failed: Connection refused (111) bt_audio_service_open: connect() failed: Connection refused (111) bt_audio_service_open: connect() failed: Connection refused (111) Cannot connect to server socket err = No such file or directory Cannot connect to server socket jack server is not running or cannot be started Expression 'stream->capture.pcm' failed in 'src/hostapi/alsa/pa_linux_alsa.c', line: 3653 Here is the errors reported by dmesg: [ 807.086761] EXT4-fs (dm-0): re-mounted. After hitting ctrl-f to work around the globalmenu bug (even though I am not using global menu) I can then edit files and such. Save them. Everything works. Of course I can no longer connect to the internet through my phone, send files, upload ringtones, use my bluetooth headset, etc. To work around you can remove the USB bluetooth adapter if you use a external one, plug it back in, and launch bluetooth-applet from the command line and it should be working again. It's not the end of the world, but Audacity should be configured to work properly in the default environment. I suggest eliminating Alsa and bluetooth support and have it not try to fight proper daemons handle it as they do a much better job. At least with PA and Bluetooth. I don't know how well Jack supports bluetooth audio devices, but Audacity really should not be allowed to do this sort of thing. I understand that it seems like a nice feature to be able to use a headset outside of Gnome, but it seems to be fundamentally incompatible with having a bluetooth adapter that is able to work with any other device. For people that may run into this problem in the future through Google or whatever here is two work arounds I suggest: 1. Remove or otherwise disable all your bluetooth radio prior to attempting to run Audacity. 2. If you forget to do that and Audacity breaks your ability to use bluetooth then remove the bluetooth audio device from your computer, plug it back in, and either log out/log in or start bluetooth-applet manually from the command line or 'alt-f2'. If your using internal bluetooth then try turning it off and on. If that fails then you will be forced to reboot. Thank you for your time and your patience. Keep in mind that as long as this bug exists you will probably have people complaining that either Audacity won't launch or will try to file bug reports against

[Bug 687535] Re: upstart loses track of ssh daemon after reload ssh
Alain, I understand your frustration. This is actually I think a little more serious than Low, as existence of a workaround only barely mitigates the impact of this. The problem, I think, is that we're using expect fork, and I'm not sure why, when sshd has -D, and its clearly not reliable for this instance, since the daemon regularly forks and exits. Raising importance to High, as the reload command *must* be reliable for sshd, as failure of sshd could result in the system being totally unmanageable. ** Changed in: openssh (Ubuntu) Importance: Low => High -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/687535 Title: upstart loses track of ssh daemon after reload ssh -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 683084] Re: Global menu doesn't work well with more than one screen
I know I am jumping into this kind of late but I had a minor brainstorm. It seems to me that the case of the huge monitor is of course important, it is also less common. Multiple monitors however is indeed quite common. My solution is as follows: 1) The top bar only extends across the primary monitor 2) When a window is on the primary monitor, its menus are displayed where they are expected 3) When a window is on the secondary monitor, a second menubar slides in from the top of that monitor as an overlay (maybe nice rounded edges, whatever). The menus are held in there. Window decorations could be designed to make sure this looks clean with maximized windows. The transient bar should look a little different from the primary bar to re-enforce that it is not a panel, just a container for menus. In this solution there is no permanent bar across the top of the secondary monitor (a transient one will show if needed). Mouse travel times are reduced dramatically and application interactions are properly contained into a single monitor. Oh, and it's pretty easy to do :) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/683084 Title: Global menu doesn't work well with more than one screen -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Yao Ziyuan : I'm not convinced that the suggested gtkrc fix is better. Yes, it does make the words clearer, but IMO, the visual outcome doesnt seem more pleasing. Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-terminal When gnome-terminal is closed and restarted, such as when Ubuntu is shut down and restarted, the session is resumed with each tab that was open previously being reopened and the current working directory being set back to the previous location. This feature is quite useful when there are many opened tabs in a session, but that session must be interrupted for a system reboot (such as when updates are installed). Public bug reported: Binary package hint: yelp One nice idea ive seen (usually poorly implemented) in other operating systems, is a "Welcome Screen". Well, the problem with a welcome screen is that it is usually there for the sole purpose of saying "Hi" on your first login. Why not simply use the Help Application (in Ubuntu's case yelp) for such a task, it is simple, informative, and already included! (but its rarely found by new users!). The "New to Ubuntu?" topic in the help documentation, is perfect for this job of introducing new users to Ubuntu, although, unfortunately, i dont believe the users who need to read it, even know it exists! - solution? Autostart, for first-time users (if possible including a checkbox to activate/deactivate the autostart on later logins). * yelp should autostart for first time users, and open up the "Welcome to Ubuntu" page.
