[Bug 439448]

2010-12-18 Thread Teej
All of these comments would be better suited for the GNOME upstream bug
tracker https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=596923. If you have
any actual information that can assist in the development and/or fix of
this bug, please send it there.
Further general discussion or chat should be left to the appropriate
mailing lists or ubuntu IRC channels.
Please bear in mind that EVERY single message (useful or not) gets sent
to those subscribed and those from duplicates (300+). So please keep any
further messages to a bare minimum unless you can help.
We know what this looks like and pretty much covered how to reproduce
it.
Sorry if this sounds harsh, but 300+ people will not be happy being
bombarded by useless messages (I'm looking at the last two posters). You
can contact each other as explained above: through the mailing lists,
IRC or directly through the "Contact User" page in Launchpad.

Thank you.

I just reinstalled the current openchrome driver from the repository,

to have xorg.conf installed to get the right resolution. I'll try
rebuilding the driver according to Bug #186103 and see if that helps
this issue.

[Bug 568611] Re: Screen brightness control fails on Dell Studio 1558

2010-12-18 Thread ombako
Hi Kamal,

I've just noticed a second side effect of the last update of the kernel.
When I suspend the machine (whether by choosing suspend in the power
menu, or by closing the computer's lid) Ubuntu freezes. I have to press
and hold down the power button in order to turn the machine off.

I am attaching an excerpt of dmesg, which perhaps might have some hints
to the problem, but I am not sure.

Greetings,

Omar

[Bug 74008] Re: "Include the window border" doesn't work by default (with compiz)

2010-12-18 Thread Sam
Came around this issue since I've wanted to contribute a screenshot for package
description, where it's requested:
> You need not artificially switch off your window decorations.
http://screenshots.debian.net/upload

Achieve it with Compiz: enable screenshot plugin (via CCSM or gconf-editor),
open the app and draw it with +MouseButton1, which is standard but can
be altered to other shortcut.
Actually the plugin enables a user to draw any part of anything as rectangle
and for other functions as delay, one may use gnome-screenshot or any other.

There was no activity because we (the users) reported the bug and you
(the developers) didn't do anything about it. Instead you let the bug
lapse for 60 days and then close it.

Is that how Ubuntu is closing bugs now? Ignoring them until they lapse?

[Bug 645211] Re: USB HDD and Flash Drives no longer recognized

2010-12-18 Thread Michael Lueck
@John, thank you for following up with that suggestion. Client reports a
snappy backup!

I worked up a bit of automation for the processes, as follows:

# fixext_backup.sh

#!/bin/bash -x

cd /sys/bus/pci/drivers/ehci_hcd

USBDRIVE=`/usr/bin/find ./ -name ":00:*"`
echo $USBDRIVE

echo $USBDRIVE | /bin/sed "s/\.\///">unbind
echo $USBDRIVE | /bin/sed "s/\.\///">bind

/usr/sbin/lsusb
/bin/sleep 5
/usr/sbin/lsusb

The first lsusb indeed does not find the drive, the second one after
waiting five seconds does, and the client may carry on with their backup
procedure at that point.

[Bug 690924] Re: package mysql-server-5.1 (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: subprocess new pre-installation script returned error exit status 1

2010-12-18 Thread Clint Byrum
Hi Joe, thanks for taking the time to file this bug report and help us
make Ubuntu better.

.../mysql-server-5.1_5.1.37-1ubuntu5.5_i386.deb) ...
Your account has expired; please contact your system administrator

/var/cache/apt/archives/mysql-server-5.1_5.1.37-1ubuntu5.5_i386.deb (--unpack):
subprocess new pre-installation script returned error exit status 1

This message suggests that there is a problem with the 'mysql' user. Is it
possible you already have a user called 'mysql' and that it has been disabled
in some way?

Try running

sudo passwd -S mysql

The fields are described as such in the man page of passwd:

   -S, --status
Display account status information. The status information consists
of 7 fields. The first field is the users login name. The second field
indicates if the user
account has a locked password (L), has no password (NP), or has a
usable password (P). The third field gives the date of the last password
change. The next four
fields are the minimum age, maximum age, warning period, and
inactivity period for the password. These ages are expressed in days.

If the user's password hasn't been updated in a long time, you can try
manually updating it as root then re-running the configuration. If you
are sure the user owns no files on disk, you can also try deleting it
and letting the configuration re-create the user.

If any of this fails horribly, please paste the results here and let us
know.

Marking Incomplete pending response from Joe.

[Bug 692016] [NEW] Add DEB_SCOUR_ARGS to pass options to dh_scour

2010-12-18 Thread Francesco Fumanti
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cdbs

Onboard ist an onscreen keyboard written in python that has been
packaged with cdbs. It uses some svg files created by inkscape for the
layout of the keys.

The introduction of dh-scour breaked onboard because it converts
style="fill:#e5d8b2;stroke:#00;" of the svg files in the layout file to
stroke="#000" fill="#e5d8b2" resulting in the error reported here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/onboard/+bug/690994

According to http://codedread.com/scour/, scour understands the
following option to disable the conversion: -disable-style-to-xml

Would it be possible to add DEB_SCOUR_ARGS to cdbs in order to pass
arguments to dh-scour?

[Bug 691819] Re: ntpd stopped working when time server disappeared

2010-12-18 Thread Clint Byrum
Hi agent8131, thanks so much for taking the time to file this bug report
and help us make Ubuntu better.

If the configuration file hasn't been changed, then on upgrade, dpkg
will in fact update it to the new value. If the user has changed
/etc/ntp.conf, the user will be given a chance to accept or reject the
new config file during the upgrade, or they can even merge the two to
reflect the new changes.

In no way will we ever blindly override a user selected configuration
like 'clock.tricity.wsu.edu'.

I'd suggest running a monitor which watches your NTP servers and sends
you a notification if they stop responding or if they are too far skewed
from your local time. You can ask your local ntpd which servers it is
querying with

ntpq -c peers

Closing as Invalid.

[Bug 384920] Re: iwconfig bitrate is not set properly

2010-12-18 Thread Osik
Hi,

I'm on 10.10 x64 and experiencing quite similar behaviour with my wifi
device, except that my connection speed seems to be 11MB/s instead of
1MB/s.

lspci:

12:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4313 802.11b/g LP-
PHY (rev 01)

iwconfig eth1:

eth1 IEEE 802.11 ESSID:"MY-WiFi"
  Mode:Managed Frequency:2.412 GHz Access Point: BC:05:43:45:C1:20
  Bit Rate=11 Mb/s Tx-Power:24 dBm
  Retry min limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
  Encryption key:off
  Power Management:off
Link Quality=5/5 Signal level=-42 dBm Noise level=-89 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:216 Rx invalid frag:0
  Tx excessive retries:82 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0

If I try to set the rate manually (i.e. iwconfig eth1 rate 48M) nothing
works. I'm using the proprietary driver from repository installed
through jockey.

Any ideas how to fix this?

Thanks. Those traces look like purely an upstream problem rather than
being something specific to Ubuntu (it also occurs on Mac OS X), so I'll
close this report here. We don't handle Firefox crash reports in

I don't understand this bug. Are you saying that switching away from
the default setting breaks audio? Can you follow

When I try to switch between two different shoutcast radio stations,
banshee hangs at "Contacting...".

How to reproduce:
1- Add Radio station "The Buzz" with URL:
http://yp.shoutcast.com/sbin/tunein-station.pls?id=1415249
2- Add Radio station "Classic Buzz" with URL:
http://yp.shoutcast.com/sbin/tunein-station.pls?id=1279514
3- Start up Banshee, double click on The Buzz to start it
4- Double click on "Classic Buzz" to switch
5- Banshee gets stuck on "Contacting..." and needs to be restarted to be able
to listen to a second station

I'm guessing this is due to using sudo. We should detect sudo (via the

[Bug 691997] [NEW] Impress crashes when pasting text from writer

2010-12-18 Thread Enrico Zini
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

I'm attaching a very short .odt file. Copy its content to the clipboard
(^C), open a new empty presentation, paste (^V) and you get a rather
unhelpful "Due to an unexpected error, OpenOffice.org crashed" message.

There is nothing on .xsession-errors or, trying to run writer or impress
from the terminal, on stderr.

I only run Ubuntu in its LTS flavour, so I am not able to try to
reproduce this bug with a more recent version of OpenOffice.org.

Cheers,

Enrico

I recently re-installed Ubuntu 10.10 as I had corrupted my Couch DB
installation (32 bit). This now works (for syncing with Ubuntu One). As one
collateral damage, Brasero, which was working OK before, after distro upgrade
from 10.04, now issues the well-known error message (if started from Rhythmbox)
and just exits (if started via Applications / .. or via context menu, i.e.,
right click on the desktop). I now use GnombBaker instead of Brasero, and this
works. But of course such things are annoying and periodically lessen my
enthusiasm for Ubuntu, and my motivation to recommend it as a serious
alternative to Windows or Mac OS.

[Bug 659106] Re: Maverick installer lost Windows partitions

2010-12-18 Thread Erick Brunzell
It looks like my bug 682429 is an actual duplicate of this but I'll
leave that decision up to the devs.

Possibly related are:

bug 655950
bug 652852
bug 657397

Hopefully the devs can get something done with this soon.

Re: [Bug 597317] Re: Text on shutdown and restart boxes is selected while tabbing

The point is that you don't just tab through the buttons, you also tab
through the text in the box too which shouldn't be the case

[Bug 682429] Re: Choosing use entire partition actually results in using entire disc

2010-12-18 Thread Erick Brunzell
It turns out that this may be a duplicate of bug 659106 but in that
case, from the info provided, it appears Paul began with an extended
partition so that blows a hole in my theory about this only being
reproducible with only primary partitions existing :^(

I'd still refer everyone to bug 655950 and also bug 652852. Also bug
657397 may be loosely related.

After following this dilemma off and on at the forums for several weeks
I'm quite convinced that displaying the "Use entire partition" and "Use
entire disc" options after having already rejected the option to "Erase
and use entire disc", and having selected "Install alongside other OS"
instead, serve no reasonable purpose and only provide an opportunity to
destroy existing data and/or any existing OS's.

If the installer finds an acceptable partitioning arrangement (ie: three
or less primary partitions) it displays the option to "install
alongside" as it should, so under what circumstance would a person want
to use and erase an existing partition? If they're performing a
reinstall over existing partitions the "manual/advanced" option provides
the proper tools to do so (including the ability to not format an
existing /home).

And this is an area where we must all put our "noob shoes" on. Most
Windows users don't know the difference between a disc and a partition
so we're simply offering potentially destructive options. Sadly this has
also effected some fairly long term Ubuntu users.

OTOH since both Vista and Win7 have their own partitioning tools the
"Use largest continuous free space" option was truly brilliant and IMHO
the safest possible dual-boot method for a first timer, aside from
possibly Wubi.

Regardless I'm not going to mark anything as a duplicate ATM, I'll leave
that decision up to the devs.

[Bug 691995] [NEW] wrong package summary for notification-daemon

2010-12-18 Thread Jakob Kramer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: notification-daemon

The English package summary for notification-daemon is wrong since Natty
Narwhal. You can see it here:
https://translations.launchpad.net/ddtp-ubuntu/natty/+pots/ddtp-ubuntu-main/de/13753/+translate

In Natty it will be "daemon to displays passive pop-up notifications",
but it should be "daemon that displays passive pop-up notifications",
shouldn't it? If so, then please fix this.

[Bug 522998] Re: XHCI (USB 3.0) kernel Module Prevents Suspend

2010-12-18 Thread ptha
Hi all, I'm running 10.10 on an Asus N61JQ laptop. Here are the steps
I've taken to get suspend/hibernate working on my laptop. For
hibernate, I had to resize my swap as it had been created smaller than
my actual RAM size. I tried adding SUSPEND_MODULES="xhci_hcd", which
helped but did not resolve the issue completely. I could see the hard
drive saving the current state to disk, after a minute there would be no
more hard drive activity but a blinking cursor remained on the screen. I
would then have to switch off the laptop manually. On turning the laptop
back on, the system was correctly restored to its state before I
initiated the hibernate. Blacklisting in /etc/modprobe.d didn't make a
difference, on hibernating the laptop wouldn't switch off, with a
blinking cursor.

I found the solution on ubuntuforums.org, see comment #7 by John Dias:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1444822

His solution involves a script for unbinding ehci_hcd from the kernel
(which should be made executable). I followed his instructions, using
xhci_hcd instead of xhci for part 2 and now suspend/hibernate works
perfectly.
