[Bug 672177] [NEW] libc6 upgrade causes umount to fail on shutdown
You have been subscribed to a public bug by ingo (ingo-steiner): On a clean install of Ubuntu 10.04.1, after upgrading the offer libc6 upgrade, on the next reboot the root fs can't be properly unmounted (mount: / is busy). This causes fsck to run on boot and of course some minor issues with the filesystem. This might not be a problem with libc6 itself, but a side effect of upgrading in combination with some other package (I suspect the init process, so I guess upstart). The fsck run, and the orphaned inodes it finds are holding me back from installing this on a new server - especially since this already happens on a clean install of 10.04.1! p...@ubuntu:~$ lsb_release -rd Description:Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS Release:10.04 ii libc6 2.11.1-0ubuntu7.2 Embedded GNU C Library: Shared libraries ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.04 Package: libc6 2.11.1-0ubuntu7.2 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.32-24.39-server 2.6.32.15+drm33.5 Uname: Linux 2.6.32-24-server x86_64 Architecture: amd64 Date: Sun Nov 7 16:17:07 2010 InstallationMedia: Ubuntu-Server 10.04.1 LTS Lucid Lynx - Release amd64 (20100816.2) ProcEnviron: PATH=(custom, no user) LANG=en_US.UTF-8 SHELL=/bin/bash SourcePackage: eglibc ** Affects: eglibc (Ubuntu) Importance: Critical Status: Confirmed ** Affects: upstart (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Confirmed ** Tags: amd64 apport-bug lucid -- libc6 upgrade causes umount to fail on shutdown https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/672177 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is a direct subscriber. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 672177] Re: libc6 upgrade causes umount to fail on shutdown
I wonder what Canonical tells its customers who purchased commercial support for Ubuntu in case they discover this bug? Something like: sorry, we have done our best to hide such frightening messages from our customers. Unfortunately the nasty community has retrieved and disclosed it. We have set up plymouth to hide the messages behind a puple splash screen with walking dots and taken provisions, so a normal user won't be able to uninstall plymouth (see Bug #556372). We have switched-off the usual logging from fsck-runs in /var/log/fsck/checkroot and /var/log/fsck/checkfs (see Bug #568594). We have set up the boot process to perform a filesystem check for / at every boot, regaredless what the user specifies in /etc/fstab column #6 (see Bug #568594). Ubuntu firmly relies on 'fsck' as a proven and reliable tool to iron out those minor glitches when your filesystem gets corrupted or marked dirty on shutdown. [Bug 377571] Re: package postfix 2.5.5-1.1 failed to install/upgrade:
I think this might be a vaild issue under some circumstances but there is an easy workaround. I looks like the issue with #5 is that he didn't put a space between cat and the file path. I have the same issue with a fresh install and default settings. This makes sense, because telinit u just sends SIGTERM to upstart, which has no handler, as it was removed by revision 977, and doesn't seem to have been added back. Since SIG_DFL signals are not delivered to init, I'm not sure how umountroot's call to 'telinit u' can help in this case. Unless I'm missing something in upstart's code (quite likely) I think there may still potentially need to be a change in upstart to support re-executing. Another option if this can't be pushed into upstart is to mount a special readonly filesystem at boot just for init's libraries. However, it seems that re-execcing would be simpler than trying to get that right. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is a direct subscriber. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/672177 Title: libc6 upgrade causes umount to fail on shutdown because init cannot be restarted -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

Thank you very much for your suggestios, I tried them both. Here's what I observed: The brightness workaround kind of does the trick, but it simply switches off the lower half of the brightness steps, i.e. without the workaround I could dim the display even darker. I think one should rather adjust the OSD instead of cutting out half of the functionality. [Bug 693337] Re: Menus for choosing language should have one option per available translation
Hi David, The idea is about _refraining_ from showing all the locales, both in GDM and in language-selector's Language tab. (The tab in language-selector for other locale settings is the place for showing all the locales.) At the same time, the variants should be added to the GDM options as per bug 408474. Right now I have four installed languages: English, Swedish, German and Catalan. While 'locale -a | grep \.utf8' lists 29 locales, running the lang-list.pl script gives me: caCatalan ca...@valenciaCatalan (Spain - Valencia) enEnglish en_AU English (Australia) en_CA English (Canada) en_NZ English (New Zealand) en_GB English (United Kingdom) en_US English (United States) deGerman svSwedish These are some of my questions for the time being: * Would this be a suitable approach for determining available languages for message translation? * Is listing the /usr/share/locale-langpack directory a safe way to find available translations, or is there more into it? * As regards languages with more than one translation: When the country is not specified, does it matter which of the locales that is assigned to the LC_MESSAGES environment variable? If it does, how do we determine the main dialect of respective language? / Gunnar ** Changed in: ubuntu-translations Status: Incomplete = New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/693337 Title: Menus for choosing language should have one option per available translation -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 573708] Re: apache crashes when .mo files are updated
I am asking because php-gettext falls back on the native gettext library provided by PHP if it's available. php-gettext would only provide gettext-like calls when system-installed PHP doesn't have gettext support compiled in, and that's rarely the case (judging by your packages list, you are probably using Fedora, Debian or Ubuntu, and gettext _is_ natively compiled in on them). According to http://www.php.net/manual/en/function.gettext.php that's built-in PHP gettext function (or alias thereof). If you are seeing a crash, you should report it against PHP or Apache (I am not sure which). Also note that php-gettext is pure PHP and wouldn't really be able to crash Apache process itself without PHP or Apache being buggy. The only bug in php-gettext is the confusing name: in retrospective, it shouldn't have been named php-gettext when there is a PHP gettext library included in PHP (http://www.php.net/manual/en/book.gettext.php). It's now a bit late to change it. ** Changed in: php-gettext (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete = Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/573708 Title: apache crashes when .mo files are updated -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
