[Bug 556782] Re: [rs690m] Graphics corruption with ati x1200

2011-03-09 Thread Brian Visel
I still have this problem in Natty. Badly.

The "radeon modeset=0" (disabling KMS) workaround still works, sortof.
It reduces the frequency/amount of corruption. However, the underlying
problem is still there. ..and with Natty as it is, disabling KMS also
disables compositing, unlike with Maverick.

At this point, the default install of Ubuntu is effectively useless for
many on Radeon rs690m (a fairly common card), and has limited
functionality if you apply the workaround.

Even though it's not currently reflected on Launchpad (tracking of the
fd.o bugzilla seems to be borked currently), freedesktop.org has closed
that bug as 'fixed'. However, this didn't seem certain (you can look at
the bug yourself to see what I mean). I don't know if it is actually
fixed, and I can't test it as I don't know the process of getting code
from freedesktop.org into a compiled binary.

Jerome Glisse, who closed the bug on freedesktop.org said that we
shouldn't open another bug report with them on this issue until I (or
someone else with the problem) can get that done.

Any ideas for resources/howtos on that (fd.o git -> ubuntu binaries)?

[Bug 732438] [NEW] Launcher forgets to hide/dodge after long uptime

2011-03-09 Thread Eylem
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

What happens is that after some time, the launcher stops hiding/dodging even if
it's set to do so. When it happens, the launcher boundary seems to have even
some edge resistance/attraction.
This happens to me quite often as I leave my computer on for long times. The
only remedy (without any console commands) seems to logout/login.
Please see the screenshot. I'll try to get a unity.log file when I can.

[Bug 729307] Re: YouTube videos play red

2011-03-09 Thread YenTheFirst
Niklas: this thread (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1698956) also
discovered the cookie issue.
Apparently, the cookie PREF, with a value of 'fv=' is at
fault. if you prevent this cookie from being set, or manually set it to an
older version of flash and prevent it from being overwritten, the videos will
play normally.

The speculation is that youtube uses the value of this cookie to
determine what format stream to send out, Perhaps youtube is supporting
some new feature in 10.2, which doesn't work correctly on Ubuntu. So, if
you tell youtube to send the stream for an older version (even if you
have 10.2), it works correctly. That's the speculation, at least

[Bug 729386] Re: [Natty] DRI2 fails with x1200, compositing broken

2011-03-09 Thread Brian Visel
Just to clarify --
In Maverick, Xorg was working (well enough), with compositing, with KMS off
(and only with KMS off).
Now, compositing doesn't work with KMS off.

If I turn KMS on, compositing does work, but the amount of cross-program
graphics corruption makes the system unusable, both with Maverick and
with Natty. However, there is corruption either way, whether or not KMS
is running, and regardless of whether or not compositing is working.
There is simply a workable amount of corruption when KMS is disabled.

I guess the point of this particular bug is: KMS now seems to be
required for compositing to work. Is that a bug, or intentional? If it
is intentional, then this bug can be closed as invalid. The corruption
issue is open elsewhere.

[Bug 669820] Re: Cannot set brightness or contrast

2011-03-09 Thread Robert Ancell
Hi Andy,

Thanks for the patch. Some feedback:
- Does your scanner support these options? Could you provide the output of
simple-scan -d when running it? (To see what numbers your driver expects).
- You should only set the setting if it's not the default - otherwise leave it
to the driver to choose
- The GUI should have sliders, not numbers (i.e. "darker |- lighter")
- The selected value should be scaled to what the driver expects. e.g. a
driver might have a contrast setting from 0-100, or -100 to 100. We need to
see how most drivers behave. (This is why it's important not to set the value
if it's not configured - 0 might be 0 contrast, or default contrast).

I'm a little worried about how consistent drivers are with these
settings, but I support the patch if it works. This setting will be
"advanced" as most users will adjust the brightness/contrast after the
scan is completed.

[Bug 682262] Re: Linux on Thinkpad x61s doesn't suspend when booted in docking station (does if not though)

2011-03-09 Thread jklasdf
I'm having the same problem with the stable maverick kernel:

~$ uname -a
Linux thinkpad 2.6.35-27-generic #48-Ubuntu SMP Tue Feb 22 20:25:46 UTC 2011
x86_64 GNU/Linux

~$ cat /proc/version_signature
Ubuntu 2.6.35-27.48-generic 2.6.35.11

When booted in the docking station, suspend fails both while in the
docking station and while undocked from the docking station. If I boot
the laptop outside of the docking station, suspend works fine. Disabling
the serial and parallel port in the BIOS fixes the problem, but I would
like to be able to use the serial port and parallel port on the docking
station.

Here is the dmesg output from a failed attempt:

[Bug 729307] Re: YouTube videos play red

2011-03-09 Thread Niklas Park
I know my comments are pretty much covered by #7, Sergio, above. Just thought I
expand on that. There are not many cookies involved, but one of them does
something that "pinkifies" Flash video embedded on the main YouTube interface,
but not externally linked or popped out video.
Plus. It obviously affects more than one version of the Flash plugin.

What is needed right now is someone who understands Youtube cookies. I
don't. At least not good enough. Disabling cookies is not a viable
solution.

Expecting everyone and their grandmother to disable cookies / turn off
HW acceleration / use popout / use Minitube is not a good solution.
Casual users are more likely to just diss Ubuntu.

How do you communicate more directly with YouTube devs? Their help
forums seems to be mostly about users helping users. How do you file a
formal bug report?

[Bug 727232] Re: lernid crashed with ImportError in /usr/lib/pymodules/python2.7/desktopcouch/records/server.py: No module named application.server

2011-03-09 Thread John S. Gruber
There's a good chance that I'm not understanding how python dependencies
should be working, but just in case...

In revision 40 of lp:ubuntu/desktopcouch on 1/12/11 dependencies were
reorganized. In particular, python-desktopcouch-records no longer
depends on the desktopcouch binary package. However, python-
desktopcouch-records does import from python-desktop-application in line
9 of its deprecated desktopcouch.records.server.py and python-desk-
application requires desktopcouch in
/usr/share/pyshared/desktopcouch/application/local_files.py in lines
43-48. (python-desktop-application doesn't depend on the desktopcouch
binary, so even if the application instead depended upon python-
desktopcouch-application and imported d...application.server rather than
d...record.server, a problem would remain in its local_files.py).

[Bug 730052] Re: Documentation for installing phpMyAdmin incomplete

2011-03-09 Thread Bo Christensen
I have just tried again with the same result.

I started with:
sudo apt-get remove phpmyadmin
Removed "Include /etc/phpmyadmin/apache.conf" from /etc/apache2/apache2.conf
sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 restart

And then:
sudo apt-get install phpmyadmin

Going to http://localhost/phpmyadmin in my browser i get:
The requested URL /phpmyadmin was not found on this server.

As far as i can see Apache wasn't started during the phpMyAdmin installation,
so i restart Apache and still get:
The requested URL /phpmyadmin was not found on this server.

Adding "Include /etc/phpmyadmin/apache.conf" and
/etc/apache2/apache2.conf and restarting Apache and i have the login
page for phpMyAdmin.

My Ubuntu 10.10 is fairly clean - only a few weeks old, and I haven't
messed with Apache, PHP, MySQL and phpMyAdmin before following the
Server Guide in this order:

https://help.ubuntu.com/10.10/serverguide/C/httpd.html
https://help.ubuntu.com/10.10/serverguide/C/php5.html
https://help.ubuntu.com/10.10/serverguide/C/mysql.html

2011-03-09 Thread Geoff McClinsey
Also i think its trying to display gdm not freezing. You just cant ctrl
alt del out of it because it brought down your keyboard. Once gdm loads
the keyboard would normally be brought back up. You should notice, or at
least it did for me the keyboard lights shutting off right after
plymouth finishes. After about 2 or 3 minutes it will restart on its
own.

[Bug 713867] Re: Live-CD and Installed Ubuntu freeze on boot with GeForce 210 / Nouveau

2011-03-09 Thread Geoff McClinsey
The cut and paste below was my comment on your other bug. So i just
wanted to include it. This bug posting though explains exactly what was
happing to me right down to the blinking _ in the upper left and
freezing, however for me it also kicks off the display completely and am
presented with a no connected device message on my screen.

The reason why there is nothing you can do to get out of it (exept
powerdown the pc or wait as after a few minutes it will restart itself)
is because at the time the display crashed it was also brining down your
keyboard. The keyboard would normally be brought back up right after
display did not load the keyboard did not boot up. You will notice when
this happens by all the keyboard lights going out.

I came to this conclusion after realising in a working install
environment the keyboard is brought down and back up right before gdm
kicks in.

# CUT/PASTE my comment on bug #661235 #

You wouldn't by any chance have a dual display set-up or be using a non
VGA connection are you. Even if your are not check your bios and see if
dual display is enabled (Advanced Chipset in my bios).

I found if it is enabled and set to primary video AUTO or PCI-E and you
are using a (in my case) HDMI connection the install will fail. Fails
right after plymouth and just flashes a blinking _ in the upper left.
Eventually displays Samsungs default NO Connection Msg.

My Setup is:
1 TV Plugged in threw HDMI
1 CRT monitor plugged in threw onboard VGA

BIOS / Advanced Chipset

1.)

Dual Display - Enabled // Primary Video - Auto ---> Will NOT work
(displays on flatscreen)
Dual Display - Enabled // Primary Video - PCI-E ---> Will NOT work
Dual Display - Enabled // Primary Video - VGA---> Works Everytime (if
you also have a old CRT monitor connected)

2.)

Dual Display - Disabled // Primary Video - Auto ---> WORKS (displays on
flatscreen)
Dual Display - Disabled   //  Primary Video - PCI-E  --->  WORKS
Dual Display - Disabled // Primary Video - VGA ---> WORKS

* I recall one of the above 3 getting past install but then failing
after restart with same black screen. I think it was auto. Unfortunately
I forgot to document that one. But I have documented that PCI-E did
work, so its not clear to me why auto would fail and PCI-E would work
when they both were using the PCI-E connection. This might have just
been a mishap but after trying to install so much once it got installed
I did not want to try to recreate problem. Can someone verify?

3. (HDMI Connection and a VGA to DVI Adapter Connection)

Dual Display - Enabled // Primary Video - Auto ---> WORKS (displays on
flatscreen)
Dual Display - Enabled   //  Primary Video - PCI-E   ---> WORKS
Dual Display - Enabled // Primary Video - VGA---> WORKS

So to me it appears this driver does not work properly with the BIOS
having Dual Display Enabled.

[Bug 719446] Re: systematic freezes on any kernel version post 2.6.35-22

2011-03-09 Thread Alan Campbell
I installed

linux-image-2.6.35-28-generic_2.6.35-28.49_i386.deb

by double clicking; it opened in Ubuntu Software Centre
,

Seemed to install successfully.

Then double clicked on

linux-headers-2.6.35-28-generic_2.6.35-28.49_i386.deb

and got "Dependency is not satisfiable: linux-headers-2.6.35-28"

Tried synaptic package manager, navigated to local folder where deb files lived;

could not open them; they were greyed out
.

Set permissions n deb files so I could execute them; same
.

Stumped.

How difficult would me dong my own git bisect be? Though if I don't
have enough knowledge to get this update installed, maybe a git bisect
is a bit ambitious.

[Bug 687689] Re: Audacity ruins bluetooth

2011-03-09 Thread nate m
Thanks for your reply. Sorry it took so long for mine. And I apologize
for my negative tone before. I was pretty irritated at the time and it
was rude.

I am pleased to say that with a fresh install of the 11.04 Ubuntu Alpha
3 release I was able to try out bluetooth again on my new PC and it
seems to be perfectly happy with Audacity.

Audacity is still a bit dodgy, but after a bit of fiddling, creating a
symbolic link from /var/lib/alsa/asound.state to /dev/null and a reboot
it is all working. It can playback and record over bluetooth using
pulseaudio without too much drama.

Thank you for taking the time to reply to the bug.

[Bug 259219] Re: Broken TLS support in libGL.so

2011-03-09 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
It looks a lot like initial-exec is inappropriate for libGL. At least,
it is incompatible with being able to dlopen libGL. However, changing
initial-exec to (the most general) global-dynamic doesn't fix this.

There's additionally some hand-generated assembly in glapi, which I've
patched out, but the minimal reproducing case still dies. Time to
really grok the ELF TLS ABI, I guess.

[Bug 732412] [NEW] LibreOffice Writer has no icon in Unity and is labeled "LibreOffice Small Device Format Importer"

2011-03-09 Thread Brewster Malevich
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libreoffice

With lowriter version 1:3.3.1-1ubuntu5.

In natty (AMD64), if I start LibreOffice Writer (through any means),
with Unity, the icon for the process in Unity is a question mark which
is labeled "LibreOffice Small Device Format Importer" in the Unity
mouse-over widget.

I would expect the usual LibreOffice Writer icon to appear (instead of
the generic question mark), and for this to be labeled "LibreOffice
Writer".

I would expect the usual LibreOffice Writer icon to appear (instead of
the generic question mark), and for this to be labeled "LibreOffice
  Writer".

Re: [Bug 721921] Re: kernel crash when Cisco VPN client is started

2011-03-09 Thread Robert Clark
Hi Jeremy,
Thanks for responding to this bug.

I have not had time to get the upstream kernel. I will try
the 2.6.38-5-generic kernel this evening, and see if that works.

Robert

Re: [Bug 728969] Re: Wireless connection very slow and weak on Natty Alpha 3

2011-03-09 Thread dinky
Wow, that's very strange Timo, have tested it on 2 separate installs in
my eeepc 901, and neither is an issue. Which bios version are you
running, and is it (originally) the Linux or Windoze version of the
eeepc 901? I recall there was some very weird behaviour with some of the
bios versions...

Re wireless, this has been increasingly hard to troubleshoot. Seems to
work for awhile, then slows to a crawl. The way to 'fix' it seems to be
turning the wireless off via the keyboard shortcut Timo used, Fn+F2,
then back on again the same way. Seems to be working... then sometimes
it's not.

Any advice on what to troubleshoot, and when?

Will try these commands next time I notice difficulties:
iwconfig wlan0
nm-tool

Also, what's the wpasupplicant, and how do I use it? Cheer.

couldn't you make your "mplayer" package a meta or dummy package for an

I had fixed this by downgrading to xserver-xorg-input-wacom to

me. Today, however, an update came out for wacom-dkms (perhaps
unrelated)? I'm back to this behavior.

[Bug 732410] [NEW] flac decoding is broken in some manner for gstreamer

2011-03-09 Thread nate m
Public bug reported:

This bug leads to poor performance and poor audio quality. Audio quality
issues involve popping sounds, scratch sounds, pausing, silence, and
other sound quality issues with any application that uses gstreamer.
These applications include totem, banshee, nautilus (audio preview), and
gst123. It sounds like the audio is cutting out, as if the one of the
volume sliders was cranked way too high or something like that.

The symptoms manifest themselves as buffer underruns or poor performance
with pusleaudio. It seems that pulseaudio must continuously loop back to
correct sound issues. This is not noticeable when using pulseaudio in
it's default configuration as it's able to compensate for you. Probably
the same for Alsa. When I am using the a52 alsa plugin to send audio to
a receiver over SPDIF, however I have poor audio performance. The
problem appears to still exist regardless, but it is masked.

Originally I thought it was Banshee that was causing the poor audio
performance. Then I traced it down to pulseaudio, but now I believe it's
a issues with gstreamer itself.

While searching for existing bugs I noticed a number of gstreamer
applications that are exhibiting poor behavior when using flac, but it
is not apparent why this is. I may have located it.

The reason why I think it's a bug with gstreamer and not pulseaudio is
because I can play the same files just perfectly using non-gstreamer
applications like VLC or mplayer. I can also re-encode flac files as
Ogg Vorbis files and they play just fine.

I understand that playing through the a52 encoder plugin is not a
supported configuration, but I think it's just making the problems
surface and not the core cause of the issue.

When selecting 'Analog Stereo Output' and while running 'pulseaudio -vv' I
receive copious amounts of output that resemble this:

D: sink-input.c: Have to rewind 1036 bytes on implementor.
D: source.c: Processing rewind...
D: protocol-native.c: Underrun on ''Where the Devil Don't Stay' by 'Drive-By

D: alsa-sink.c: before: 1147
D: alsa-sink.c: after: 1147
D: alsa-sink.c: Rewound 4588 bytes.

This output is continuous and flies up the xterm at a fast rate.

Using this command with 'gst123 ; killall pulseaudio' in another
terminal produced 530 of those messages over the course of a 1 minute
and 4 second audio sample:

$ pulseaudio -vv 2>&1 | grep "D: alsa-sink.c: Rewound " |wc
5302650 19024

The same audio converted to 64Kb/s Ogg Vorbis creates this output:

$ pulseaudio -vv 2>&1 | grep "D: alsa-sink.c: Rewound " |wc
  4 20 149

The same flac file converted to wav output produced this:

$ pulseaudio -vv 2>&1 | grep "D: alsa-sink.c: Rewound " |wc
  4 20 149

Which seems identical to the Ogg Vorbis output.

The files are:
$ file 01\ Where\ the\ Devil\ Don\'t\ Stay.*
01 Where the Devil Don't Stay.flac: FLAC audio bitstream data, 16 bit, stereo,
44.1 kHz, 14074368 samples
01 Where the Devil Don't Stay.ogg: Ogg data, Vorbis audio, stereo, 44100 Hz,
~64000 bps, created by: Xiph.Org libVorbis I
01 Where the Devil Don't Stay.wav: RIFF (little-endian) data, WAVE audio,
Microsoft PCM, 16 bit, stereo 44100 Hz

The song is normally 5 minutes long, but I cut it short to 1 minute.
This is not the only file, of course, I tested several other flac, ogg,
wav, and mp3 files and only flac created this issue.

The above was duplicated using multiple audio devices, too.
Devices exhibiting the same output as above are:
* HP USB audio headset
* Logitech G330 USB headset (I recommend this product, btw.)
* RealTech ALC889 Intel HD Audio onboard device (analog out)

Devices that had different output, but had errors:
* Sony Bluetooth headset (Sounded fine, but with 1-2 second pauses e

[Bug 693906] Re: The language used in the OpenSSH Server documentation page is misleading or incorrect.

2011-03-09 Thread Adam Sommer
I agree with Colin, I think the terms fit with the rest of the
documentation. I don't think separating the OpenSSH section into client
and host/server would make much sense considering the length and depth
of the section. The Server Guide to this point has been written with
people new to Ubuntu in mind to help them get up and running with Ubuntu
Server as quickly as possible. Therefore subjects tend to not go into
great detail especially for topics that have much more in depth
documentation elsewhere on the net.

Marking as Won't Fix.

Thank you for your feedback,
Adam
