[Bug 748528] Re: Empathy does not save any preferences, such as enable/disable spell checking, message log etc.

2011-04-02 Thread Omer Akram
Thanks for taking time to report this bug. Can you please check if the
package 'libdconf0' is installed on your system? if its not installed,
install it and then restart empathy and check if you still face the
issue.

[Bug 748861] [NEW] icon for weather-clear (day only) is missing

2011-04-02 Thread Felix Lawrence
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntu-mono

ubuntu-mono-dark and ubuntu-mono-light both have lots of icons for
weather conditions. Although there are many weather-clear-night icons,
there is no weather-clear icon for daytime.

So when it's sunny, the gnome clock applet and indicator-weather display
icons from gnome-hicolor. Could the set please be completed with this
one last icon?

[Bug 748407] Re: Unable to connect to a VPN pptp in Natty

2011-04-02 Thread HacKurx
There must be something wrong with my interface. This morning can not I
connect to the VPN. I restart the service:

hackurx@SRV-01:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart
 * Running /etc/init.d/networking restart is deprecated because it may not
enable again some interfaces
 * Reconfiguring network interfaces...
Ignoring unknown interface eth0=eth0.
 [ OK ]
hackurx@SRV-01:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/network-manager restart
Rather than invoking init scripts through /etc/init.d, use the service(8)
utility, e.g. service network-manager restart

Since the script you are attempting to invoke has been converted to an
Upstart job, you may also use the restart(8) utility, e.g. restart
network-manager
network-manager start/running, process 2192

Not a bug, its just some misconfiguration on your system.

To fix it, follow these steps:
1) Open gconf-editor from a terminal
2) Navigate to /desktop/gnome/url-handlers/ftp
3) change the command value to nautilus %s

[Bug 741474] Re: Compiz doesn't appear to respect GNOME's mouse theme setting.

2011-04-02 Thread zeruke
you can also see this with using unity and the only way(by what i'v
seen) around it right now is by going through what is shown at
http://www.webupd8.org/2010/08/how-to-change-mouse-cursor-theme-in.html

this can become very annoying at times so it would be good if a fix can
be done so not to have to go through those steps

[Bug 748698] Re: Empathy Internet Messaging - Crashing when idle

2011-04-02 Thread Omer Akram
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a ".crash" file. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

Now open your file manager, navigate to your /var/crash directory and open the
crash report you wish to submit.
If this fails you will have to open a terminal and file your report with
'ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash' where _my_crash_report.crash is
the crash you would like to report. If you get an error that you aren't allowed
to access this report you will have to file it with 'sudo ubuntu-bug
/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash'.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

[Bug 688117] Re: Launcher does not raise minimized windows consistently

2011-04-02 Thread Doug McMahon
In ccsm > workarounds there is an option to " keep previews of minimized
windows", which if enabled would 'pick' minimized windows when clicking
on the launcher icon (whether the first or 2nd click depending on
circumstances

This seems to work better than that option in that I haven't seen
anything go south while trying out

this indicates a hardware problem. do you have problems with installing
other packages as well? can you try manually creating the directory

This looks pretty similar to bug #502673. Regardless, we no longer call
gdk_flush() in our latest code so you shouldn't experience this issue.
Please try our PPA to confirm it is no longer an issue:

hmmm this seems sorta like my problem but its mostly on a secondary
screen and only happens when compiz is enabled which i have made a bug
report( https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/739103 )
so someone should help to check to see if its the same problem or two
different ones with the same symptom

[Bug 748850] [NEW] Can't middle or right click on bookmarks to open in new tab

2011-04-02 Thread Hew McLachlan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

With the new menu placed above the firefox window, I can no longer
middle click a bookmark from the bookmarks menu to open in a new tab. No
matter whether I left, middle or right click, it is treated as a left
click and opens in my currently open tab.

Steps to reproduce:
Click "Bookmarks" menu and middle-click one of your bookmarks

What should happen:
That bookmark opens in a new tab

What actually happens:
That bookmark opens in the current tab

[Bug 554263] Re: [uvcvideo causes ehci_hcd to force halt]Trying to use built-in webcam in certain notebooks/laptops breaks other USB devices

2011-04-02 Thread errorfinder99
Possible workaround found that fixes the crashing problem with the
ehci_hcd driver what i did was rmmod ehci_hcd as root then modprobe -a
ehci_hcd and the wifi reconnected and the webcam work many times no
crashes and all other apps work no problem i think it an timing problem
with the ehci_hcd driver is my guess.

[Bug 688117] Re: Launcher does not raise minimized windows consistently

2011-04-02 Thread Cameron Hart
Yes you need 1072 and 1073, although I've since found a slightly simpler
way of doing the same thing - that is changing the w->activate() in 1072
to w->unmaximize(), then 1073 is not necessary.

I'm not sure what you mean by the option in workarounds?

[Bug 734325] Re: Natty: Users should be able to easily turn off (disbable) global menu

2011-04-02 Thread rihanha
Just a few hours new to Natty, but the app menu is driving me insane -
even after returning to Gnome/Classic desktop I can't get rid of it. It
appears to be affecting my ability to move and/or min/max windows. I've
adjusted many settings and so far can not fix the issue. I'd like the
ability to turn the global menu off from within settings, particularly
given this is a major change to how I set up my layers/windows. I am
frustrated with the sudden inability to work in my normal fashion.

Although it was an issue in a PPA package at one time, the same problem
is now part of the kernel as pointed out in comment #6.

More information? If it's the same bug, and it quite likely is, I think
I'll add Natty to this report.

[Bug 688117] Re: Launcher does not raise minimized windows consistently

2011-04-02 Thread Doug McMahon
Cameron Hart wrote >
>I've proposed a fix that raises minimised windows before the scale.

I gave that (those? ) a try, didn't know if 1072 & 1073 went together so
applied both.
If one starts sticking minimized, un-maxed, and even maxed windows of a window
group of various workspaces ect. the are too many combos to account for, and to
work in one way consistently for all of them

This commit(s) seem to maintain most of the prior behavior of the
launcher icon, (which I thought was good) and raise or pick minimized
windows of a group similar to the option in 'workarounds'

I only tried the option in 'workarounds' for a short bit - it seemed to cause
inconsistent results +
On the face of it, in a short test, this seems a bit more stable than the
workaround option, though for all I know maybe they are basically the same thing

[Bug 748831] [NEW] Volume notification is based on previous volume; should be based on the new volume

2011-04-02 Thread Dylan McCall
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: indicator-sound

When I change the volume with the mouse wheel, a notification bubble now
appears by default. (This is toggled with the show-notify-osd-on-scroll
setting). This notification has the previous volume level, resulting in
rather unfortunate inconsistencies between that bit of feedback and the
indicator's own icon.

This is easy to see by slowly reducing the volume to 0, then scrolling
up very gently with the mouse.

There will be an upload on Monday, at which point I will close the bug
since I've got a testcase which proves this. Please do not reopen it
unless you can decisively prove that you attempted to open a window, it
did not open and instead you have an invisible region on your screen.

[Bug 748805] Re: Sound level icon is inconsistent with gnome-settings-daemon notifications

2011-04-02 Thread Dylan McCall
Okay, I am attaching a branch that fixes this. It's my first time patching a
patch (or using quilt), but hopefully I did it right :)
I decided to change our patch for gnome-settings-daemon, since the existing
stuff was a little complex and it wouldn't look pretty inside indicator-sound.
(I assume the settings daemon patch inherits that complexity from the original
overlay, which had a fancy fading effect). With that said, the current
gnome-settings-daemon patch is probably more consistent with upstream Gnome, so
if there is a valid reason to do that here we should patch indicator-sound
instead.

I discovered that the issue with indicator-sound's notification is
unrelated: it generates a notification based on the previous state,
instead of the new state. Filing a new bug report for it…

Hi David,
Thanks a lot for your help. Here are the results:
1) Did not have /updates/ in the filename
2) Installed the package linux-alsa-driver-modules-2.6.35-28-generic. No change
in stuation. Attached the output from http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-info.sh
at this point as alsa-info-report-post-alsa-driver.txt
3) Tried after inserting alsa-base.conf with model=auto. No change. Attached

4) On hda-anayzer, I could not figure out how I can raise the Amp-out values.

[Bug 748137] Re: unity rendering broken with fglrx (black masks)

2011-04-02 Thread dart
Add the daily build PPA from here:
https://launchpad.net/~unity/+archive/daily. Fully update your system.
Log into unity session. If nothing comes on screen, try logging out
again. You will eventually see unity interface. Also be prepared to run
the command: compiz --replace for crashes.

But take a note that your eyes will bleed because unity will be
extremely laggy. I don't know what is causing it. So I purged the PPA
and now I am happy with classic desktop.

Once this fglrx patch lands in next compiz release in natty, I will file
a separate bug for laggy unity.

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does
not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to
a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you
are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are
having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if
you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see

[Bug 748320] Re: Blank screen (no GUI) after installation of NVidia proprietary driver on Sony Vaio Z119GS

2011-04-02 Thread walkerstreet
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xorg

- I am testing Natty 20110328 Live Desktop CD for amd64, as part of the
Xorg-prop-drivers-testers group.
- My notebook is a Sony Vaio VPC Z119GC (Intel Core i7-620M CPU and 4 gigabytes
of RAM). The hardware switch above the keyboard on my machine has 2 settings
‘speed’ and ‘stamina’
- * When set to ‘Speed’, the machine uses the NVidia GeForce® GT 330M GPU). I
always leave it on the Speed setting.
- * When set to ‘Stamina’, the machine uses the motherboard’s Intel chipset for
graphics.
- NVidia proprietary drivers have never installed and run properly on Sony Vaio
VPC Z series models when using standard installation procedures (either Desktop
Live CD, Alternate CD, 32 bit or 64 bit installers). I have tried and failed
to install NVidia proprietary drivers for Karmic, Lucid, Maverick and now
Natty. The best you get is a relatively unresponsive blank screen. You never
get in to the GUI. The problem likely occurs on all Sonys with model numbers
starting in Z11 and Z13 and possibly more, making this a problem that applies
to tens of thousands of notebooks.
+ I'm testing the NVidia Proprietary Driver on the Natty 20110328 daily Live
Desktop amd64 CD for the Xorg team.
+ My Sony Vaio VPC Z119GC has a NVidia GeForce GT 330M.
+
+ I've tried many times to install Ubuntu and an NVidia proprietary driver
+ since I got my Vaio a year ago (on Karmic, Lucid, Maverick and now
+ Natty). The best I ever get is a blank screen (no GUI). The default
+ vesa driver now works on Natty, which is a big improvement on previous
+ distos, which were completely unuseable. I've read that other Sony
+ Vaios with model numbers starting in Z11 and Z13 have the same problem.

The following is the list of results I get when I try to go through the
steps in the "Installation" mandatory testcase for "Nvidia Proprietary
Drivers" using Natty Daily Live CD 20110328:

  1. Boot stock system on compatible video hardware, using the appropriate open
source driver (or -vesa). By default, Ubuntu boots with the open source driver.
  RESULT: No problems.

  2. Note the contents of /etc/X11/xorg.conf (or simply note absence of the
file)
  RESULT: The file is absent.

  3. Go to System : Administration : Hardware Drivers

  4. Verify that it correctly identifies that a video driver is available for
this hardware
RESULT: The system nominates "NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (version
-current)" (as is expected/normal)

  5. Install the recommended driver.
  RESULT: No problem.

  6. Verify that a *.ko file is installed properly for the correct kernel(s)
find /lib/modules/ -type f -ls -iname '*.ko' | grep -E
"/nvidia-current.ko|/nvidia-173.ko|/nvidia-96.ko|/fglrx.ko"
- Check that the timestamp of the file is correct.
+ Check that the timestamp of the file is correct.
  RESULT: 133605 13248 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root13562440 Apr 2 21:31
/lib/modules/2.6.38-7-generic/updates/dkms/nvidia-current.ko

- 7. Note new contents of /etc/X11/xorg.conf. It should list the name of the
proprietary driver as a minimum.
+ 7. Note new contents of /etc/X11/xorg.conf. It should list the name of the

+ Driver"nvidia"
+ Option"NoLogo""True"
  EndSection

  8. Reboot

  9. Verify the GUI display comes up
  RESULT: FAILURE
After Grub, there is a blank screen. This stays indefinitely. There is no
Ubuntu splash screen. I have left it for half an hour or more and it just
stays blank.

After a long time, I tried pressing some keys, and got garbled text output in
the very top left corner of the screen:
  e.g. "^[[B ^[[C"
I can type letters but typing commands or trying to login does not work.
I then pressed Ctrl-Alt-F2, and was able to login as a user to the tty
terminal

  10. Verify the proprietary driver loaded
- grep -E "LoadModule:.*\"nvidia|fglrx\"" /var/log/Xorg.0.log
+  grep -E "LoadModule:.*\"nvidia|fglrx\"" /var/log/Xorg.0.log
  RESULT: [5.899] (II) LoadModule: “nvidia”
So, it appears that the nvidia driver did in fact load.

  After this, I typed:
- ls -al /var/crash
+ ls -al /var/crash
This showed an empty directory, i.e. no apport or crash files are there.
  I then typed:
  apport-cli xorg
so that I could submit this bug accompanied by an apport file.
I answered Yes to allow gdm log files to be included.
I also got this output from the apport-cli command:
cat: /var/log/gdm/:0.log.2: No such file or directory

I can get the NVidia p

For more help with debugging build errors, please see the section in:

it seems that the error is inside 'bridges', please re-run build

[Bug 730225] Re: grub-install trashes the ntfs partition that starts at sector 63 if one or more sectors in the embedding area is occupied by Adobe FlexNet

2011-04-02 Thread bsfmig
Just trash it using dd. Flexnet should be rewriting a new copy of signature in
a new place next time related application runs.
Or you can do the following workaround:
cat /boot/grub/lnxboot.img /boot/grub/core.img >
/somewhere_you_have_write_access/grldr
then copy the file to a Windows partition add a corresponding item to boot.ini
(might not work) or bcd (verified by myself) that points to grldr and
dpkg-reconfigure grub-pc
when prompted to select on which disk or partition will grub be installed on,
uncheck the disk (i.e./dev/sda) but check the partition (i.e. /dev/sda4 or so)
on which you install Ubuntu.
By doing all those above, you'll let Windows boot managers take over Ubuntu's.
But remember, when you encounter with "grub" and "grub-pc" software package
updates in Ubuntu, it's suggested to re-generate grldr afterwards.

[Bug 748622] Re: The 3 finger selection function is not enabled for ALPS Glidepoint Touchpad

2011-04-02 Thread Mark Nighswonger
To clarify, the only features that do work, are mouse functions with a
right edge scroll. I have an Acer Aspire One AO532h. I tried all the
advice that worked for some but had resigned to living with minimal
functionality until someone is able to come up with a fix. If this is
being detected as a PS2 mouse it would seem like I need to remove any
reference to it as I don't even have a PS2 port.
