[Bug 656526] Re: Device or resource busy while trying to open

2011-04-21 Thread twintomtom
I confirm that this bug affects ubuntu 10.10 live CD, and that a 9.10 liveCD
works perfectly.
A friend of mine couldn't boot into Ubuntu 10.10 anymore, after a hard
shutdown ("no init found" etc)
Luckily I found this bug report, thank you guys!

It would be nice for the noobs to have an easy way to fix the filesystem when
grub can't boot it.
Thanks again.

[Bug 768814] [NEW] Pot files are not generated during source package build

Public bug reported:

When building the gnome-user-docs source package, pot files should be

[Bug 712270] Re: Request for Gyache Improved (Yahoo chat client)

2011-04-21 Thread john Alatalo
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 249608 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/249608

I have been able to install it from those packages. But my point was that I
want it to be included in the Ubuntu software center:
http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/installingsoftware

There you find Pidgin, aMSN, Licq and the others.

aMSN is the best option for MSN Live Messenger.
Licq is the best option for ICQ
and Gyache Improved are the best option for Yahoo Messenger.

The multiprotocol clients are not good if you want to use the webcam and
so on.

So all of those should be in the Ubuntu Software Center by default.

[Bug 616605] Re: hp dm1z ALPS touchpad not detected, scroll doesn't work

2011-04-21 Thread Tom
Any chance the patch applied to the kenel in bug 632884 could also be
applied to the HP dm1z? It would address this bug. I commented out the
model number checking in alps.c in kernel 2.6.38-8-generic so that the
quirks are always enabled, and tested the module on my dm1z. No
synaptics stuff, but at least the scrolling works with the dell quirks
enabled, which makes using the computer MUCH less frustrating. However,
I'm not very experienced at this so I'm not sure how to extract the
model number of the touchpad to post it so that the dell quirks can be
enabled for the dm1z specifically to allow scrolling on this model for
everyone. Please let me know what additional information I can provide
to help.

[Bug 740864] Re: Find result is too light gray

Oh and gedit looks really good with :
widget_class "*Gedit*." style "thin"
That removes an ugly border and might work better with the overlay scrollbars

[Bug 768803] [NEW] Unity stopped working after update

2011-04-21 Thread Matt Odom
Public bug reported:

After updating my machine on 4-20, Unity stopped working, loading the
backup gnome desktop. I've tried all three drivers, to no avail,
Additional Drivers says that they are not in use, any of them. I also
tried a new, clean install, and all 3 drivers work, until I update. I've
been using the beta since it's release, so I know this is a recent
issue. I apologize for not including more information, such as error
logs, but no error was reported, and I'm not sure where it broke.

2011-04-21 Thread mwb53tx
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: flashplugin-nonfree

Noticed Facebook games were not playing. Searched google and found a
solution to remove gnash and install flashplugin-nonfree 9.0.115. I did
so, but this did not resolve the problem. I then attempted to remove
flashplugin to see if a newer version was obtainable, but the system

[Bug 768797] [NEW] /etc/hdparm.conf is ignored

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: hdparm

Configurations made in /etc/hdparm.conf are ignored. I configured my
external harddisk (connected using eSATA) to power down after 60
minutes:

/dev/sdc {

This setting ist ignored. When manually setting the Idle timeout (hdparm
-S 242 /dev/sdc) everything works as expected.

[Bug 768800] [NEW] Edge Flipping not well implemented with graphic tablet.

2011-04-21 Thread Thomas
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

If you use a graphic tablet the EdgeFlipping is not well implemented.
When dragging a window to e.g. the right corner the mouse cursor stays
on the right side until the last workspace on the right is reached. All
workspaces in between not reachable this way :(

Using the normal mouse is no problem. Here switches the mouse cursor to
the left of the next right workspace. Please implement the same behavior
for graphic tablets

Natty + Wacon Intuos 4

Re: [Bug 753930] Re: Unity does not appear

2011-04-21 Thread Balint Deak
If nothing loaded, it may have been caused by your user not having proper
permissions on the new home directory. If you created it using root, this
may be the case. I'd suggest you try it again:

log out of gnome
switch to console
mv /home/ /home/.old
mkdir /home//
cp -pr /etc/skel /home//
chown -R : /home/
now log back in to gnome using gdm

Sorry for not being able to provide the exact config directory that is
causing the issue.

Regards,
Balint

[Bug 768791] [NEW] USB creator won't select ISO for creating boot USB

2011-04-21 Thread Carsten Agger
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: usb-creator

When trying to create a bootable USB stick, I put in the USB and start
usb-creator-gtk, as usual.

I use the button to browse my way to my ISO file. I select the ISO,
click "Open" in the prompt.

The prompt closes, but the ISO is NOT added to the list. The end result
is that it's *completely impossible* to make a bootable USB stick from
an ISO file, since you are unable to add ISOs to the list.

This used to work, so I suppose it must have broken in a recent upgrade.

Public bug reported:

When I open "Manage Content plug-ins" window, the CPU load goes to 100%.
I can do nothing in that window, just scroll it (very slooow), I can't change

[Bug 766740] Re: GrubInstaller failed with code 1

2011-04-21 Thread Larry Hastings
The problem was fixed in the April 21st daily build. It appears this is
a duplicate of bug 765270 .

On a related note, installing on the Samsung Series 9 with the above
partition table results in a non-bootable system. The Series 9 uses the
Sandy Bridge chipset, and is EFI. I had to manually specify a /boot/efi
partition of type EFI before the installation would work. I can live
with that; I bring it up because it might be a good idea to mention it
in the 11.04 release notes. Thanks!

[Bug 500526] Re: usb-creator silently ignores invalid ISO files without warning the user.

2011-04-21 Thread skierpage
You get the same silent rejection if the ISO simply lacks /.disk/info ,
e.g. a Fedora 15 ISO or ReactOS ISO, see bug 705353 (which perhaps
should be made a dupe of this).

To add to Mr. Greening's analysis, as I commented in bug 705353, there
seems to be a logic error in 10.10's
usbcreator/backends/udisks/backend.py . It doesn't test if the output
of `isoinfo -J -i /path/to/Some.iso -x /.disk/info` is an empty string ,
so it doesn't realize it's failed, so its logging error 'Could not
extract .disk/info.' is never reached! That code has a "# TODO evand
2009-07-26: Error dialog.", but maybe base/backend.py should trigger the
error dialog.

- - Open a new tab in Nautilus. Browse to a local directory (i.e.
/home/username).
+ - Open a new tab in Nautilus. Browse to a local directory (i.e.
/home/username).
  - Create a file in the local directory with the same name as any file found
in the SSH mount.
  - Replace the file in the SSH mount with the newly created file (either by
dragging or using keyboard shortcuts). Confirm the overwrite.
- - Switch to the tab containing the SSH mount.
- - Press the "Up one directory" button.

[Bug 705353] Re: usb-creator doesn't accept iso file

2011-04-21 Thread skierpage
I suspect the issue here is that the ReactOS .iso does not have a
/.disk/info file, which seems to be a Debian/Ubuntu-specific convention,
and usb-creator silently rejects the disk. I'm having the same problem
with a Fedora 15 beta .iso.

@Kamus, in Ubuntu 10.10 even the log file you mention contains nothing,
because the _is_casper() check in
/usr/lib/pymodules/python2.6/usbcreator/backends/udisks/backend.py does
not test if the output of `isoinfo -J -i /path/to/Some.iso -x
/.disk/info` is an empty string , so it doesn't realize it's failed, so
the logging error 'Could not extract .disk/info.' is never reached! The
code has a "# TODO evand 2009-07-26: Error dialog." that remains undone.

Perhaps this bug should be made a dupe of bug 500526.

The Launchpad description
"A tool to take Ubuntu CDs and ISO files and write them in a usable form to
USB disks."
hints at this limitation, but the package description
"create a startup disk using a CD or disc image"
does not.

[Bug 768786] [NEW] Accumulating kernels is cruel and unusual punishment

2011-04-21 Thread VanillaMozilla
Public bug reported:

It's time to purge old kernels. They have sex and multiply.

There's no reason why ordinary users need more than the two most recent
kernels installed. Granny doesn't appreciate a grub list that extends
to several pages and grows without limit. Old kernels clutter Synaptic
and the hard drive.

And they do multiply in Synaptic. There's linux-generic and linux-
image-generic and linux-headers-generic, plus numbered versions, plus
pae versions of everything in my case. I just removed 3 versions with a
bunch of packages that came to 640 MB plus some headers that I forgot to
count.Purging by hand also requires some care. Is 2.6.35.28.36 more
recent than 2.6.32-28.50?

This is essentially Ubuntu brainstorm idea 25888, solution 7. See
http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/25888/ .

I see with removing that one redundant line of text regarding bootloader

selection. Good enough for me, thanks a million for all of the hard
work.

[Bug 752445] Re: Intermittent white window contents when maximizing/switching windows

2011-04-21 Thread Peter Schroeder
Mine is a GeForce 6100 and my windows are now white now too. I'm not
sure when they stopped being black as I had not tested it in awhile. I'm
not sure exactly when this bug kicked in, but I know it's been around
for at least a couple months.

Without composition the gnome panel tears every once awhile. Not sure if
it has to do with whatever breaks composition though.

And ya, Firefox activates it, along with Thunderbird and Openoffice. It
very well may be the return of the dreaded "black window bug" that has
plagued Nvidia users for quite some time.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, the package installation error message
that you have received is actually a failure with lzma and a generic one
at that. The following steps may help resolve the issue. Please
execute the following command, as it will clear your package cache, in a
terminal:

sudo apt-get clean

Then try performing the update again as this may resolve your issue. We
plan to make lzma errors more informative and that work is being tracked
in bug 691985 which I will mark this a duplicate of.
