[Bug 782675] Re: Virtualbox has no launcher installed- cannot launch from menu or launcher, only command line

I think it's supposed to appear in the menu right away, but that's
certainly not a bug in virtualbox.

[Bug 751689] Re: Thinkpad x201* overheats due to slow fans when on 'auto'

2011-05-25 Thread Gert van Dijk
This issue is occuring for me since a very long time; using Windows the
fans have a much higher speed setting compared to using Linux and the
thinkpad-acpi driver. However, since the use of Maverick I experience a
lot more automatic shutdowns, triggered by thinkpad-acpi, due to
overheating. Before, I was using Karmic and also experienced it
sometimes.

When monitoring the temperatures manually and setting a fan speed
accordingly the CPU is cooled properly, but thinkpad-acpi never triggers
higher CPU fan speeds even when 95 °C! That is, in my opinion, a bug.

I'm having this issue on my T61p - C2D T9300 w/ Nvidia QuadroFX 570M.
Both need quite a lot of cooling, especially when using the docking
station (less ventilation, more isolation on the bottom).

That's why I don't think this issue is specific for one Thinkpad model,
but occuring as soon as you start using thinkpad-acpi, also in older
versions of Ubuntu. And yes, it's a universe piece of software not part
of the core of Ubuntu, but this should really be fixed as it might cause
hardware failures.

I think running a user space software daemon as a workaround is rather
'dirty'.

More hardware related, but still not justifying the behaviour of thinkpad-acpi:
I noticed there was an awful lot of thermal grease on both the CPU and the GPU
for the integrated heatsink/fan in my Thinkpad, I cleaned it, replaced this
with a proper amount of thermal grease and temperatures are 10 °C lower since
then.

[Bug 572869] Re: CUPS is unable to authenticate using kerberos (known bug)

2011-05-25 Thread Etienne Goyer
To add to what Bart said above, CUPS backend are executed as user lp if
they are world-executable, and by root is the backend is only executable
by root. If the backend is to retrieve the user's credential, it has to
be executed as root or as the user itself. So if you write a wrapper
script for the smb backend, you need to make sure it is executable only
by root.

Having a wrapper script setting KRB5CCNAME is a possible solution, but a
more elegant one is to invoke smbspool as the user submitting the job,
in which case it will pick up the Kerberos ticket just fine and do the
right thing by itself. Minimally, something like the following would
work:

--
#!/bin/bash
su -c /usr/bin/smbspool $1 $2 \$3\ $4 \$5\ $2
--

Nikke, I am not sure the problem you report is what we are actually talking
about. The upstream CUPS bug you point to describe a different problem than
the one we are having in Ubuntu, where Kerberos authentication is not even
attempted in the first place. Can you describe your setup and your problem in
more details?

[Bug 96705] Re: Unclear language about Automatic Updates in Software Sources

2011-05-25 Thread John Sutton
Surely the language is not merely unclear but actually wrong! In
relation to updates and updating, I think the 3 terms notify,
download and install are pretty unambiguous. And then the phrase
Install security updates without confirmation is also pretty
unambiguous. I do not believe that this describes what happens! I do
not believe that any updates to my lucid installation have EVER been
installed without first asking me to confirm it.

Am I misunderstanding the use of the phrase without confirmation? Are
we in Wonderland?

[Bug 787203] Re: ubuntu 11.04 will not wake up from suspend

2011-05-25 Thread Daniel Manrique
Rob,

Thanks for your testing.

I notice your system has an AMD graphics card. Did you install the
additional driver for this card? (look for the Additional Drivers icon
under Applications ). This might be relevant as it looks like a display
problem.

Also, could I ask you to do another quick test?

Put the system to sleep, then wake it up, and once it's up, press
Ctrl+Alt+F1 to switch to a virtual console.

If you are able to switch to a console (which will have a login prompt),
log in with your username and password. Type this command to get the
kernel log:

dmesg  dmesg-1.txt

Then to reboot the system (so you don't need to push the power button to
do so):

sudo reboot

Once you've rebooted, please attach the dmesg-1.txt file (should be in
your user's home directory).

Also, if you are unable to switch to a virtual console, please also let
me know.

Thanks for your help with running all these tests!

[Bug 788135] [NEW] Wackamole dumps core when peer is added or removed from group, if not currently assigned to virtual ip address and hostname assigned 127.0.1.1 in /etc/hosts

2011-05-25 Thread Eric Williams
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: wackamole

## Issue

* wackamole Aborts with Assertion `ret == My.num_allocated' failed. when IP
address requires failover

* Wackamole dumps core when peer is added or removed from group, if not
currently assigned to virtual ip address

* wackamole daemon exits if not currently assigned to virtual ip address
and another peer enters or exits the group

## Environment

* Lucid 10.04.2

* wackamole 2.1.1-3.1

* hostname defined as 127.0.1.1 in /etc/hosts (default)

## Resolution

* (workaround) remove the 127.0.1.1 from /etc/hosts from all machines in
the group, and it seems to work

## Diagnostic Steps

* install and configure wackamole

* create virtual ip group with multiple hosts

* start wackamole with:

  wackamole -c /etc/wackamole.conf -d

* shutdown wackamole on machine that currently has IP address assigned

* remaining wackamole daemon aborts with the following error:

wackamole: wackamole.c:702: Send_state_message: Assertion `ret ==

larger display?

I restarted the install without rebooting; it still hasn't finished
overnight; last thing it reports is:

Saving installed packages ...

What does the above phrase mean? Is the installation finished? Is this
just saving the downloaded packages into an archive? What is the effect
of clicking the SKIP button?

I have had no problem installing Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and Ubuntu 10.10, so
I'm surprised by the difficulties I'm having with Ubuntu 11.04.

[Bug 441686] Re: Task cannot be monitored or controlled alert is unhelpful and scary

2011-05-25 Thread Tom Francis
The question in the above comment has been voluntarily removed by its
author, but I too am seeing the problem.

I am running Natty (upgraded through the last few releases I think). I
just ran update manager and got this dialog. On my system, the GUI is
frozen as a result. I am able to move the mouse, but nothing on the
screen responds to a mouse click. The clock is also not updating. The
system is not frozen as I am able to ssh in to try to diagnose the
problem.

I'm leaving it with the error up for a few mins if anyone wants me to
check anything.

[Bug 754712] Re: [Lenovo L420] System unable to resume from suspend

2011-05-25 Thread Seth Forshee
@HwRhymes: The bios certainly could be to blame, but resume hangs are
extremely hardware specific, so unless the commentor on the freedesktop
bug you linked to had an identical machine it's hard to say whether or
not it's the same problem.

@Marc: Something is getting stored in the resume trace but the kernel
could't find the matching device. One possibility is that the hang was
in a kernel module that wasn't loaded when the pm_trace output was
generated during boot. Could you try the pm_trace again, but this time
after fully booted run 'cat /sys/power/pm_trace_dev_match' and paste the
output here? Thanks!

ping: unknown host -kol.deviantart.com

insa@devel:~$ host -- -kol.deviantart.com

Breif look at linux iputils/ping.c shows that it's using gethostbyname()

So i wrote C test example that can be found at

Tested on Debian 3.1, Debian 4, FreeBSD 5.4. All i386.

Well, it's true, but
1) hostnames starting with numeric value are also not valid, but can be
resolved via gethostbyname()
(i.e. ping 12345.livejournal.com);

2) We getting odd behaviour on various system. Even worse - on same machine
using different tools
(nslookup vs. ping).

Plus, this could have unwanted effects. If somebody makes a mistake when
specifying a host name a parameter might be mistaken for it. This might even be
exploitable.

So, no, this won't change.

This bug report is valid. The RFC does not prohibit labels that don't start with
a letter; it merely recommends against them. The definition of label mentioned
above is part of a guideline introduced with this text:

The following syntax will result in fewer problems with many
applications that use domain names (e.g., mail, TELNET).

Points in favor of supporting domain names that don't necessarily follow those
guidelines:

1. There are actual domains out on the Internet running web sites with such
domain names (several blogs at blogspot.com spring to mind)
2. Such domains resolve on other OSes (not just Windows, but also OS X).
3. Direct DNS queries (dig, host, nslookup) on Linux work fine with such names.
4. Even gethostbyname() on Linux works for such names when they're in the local
/etc/hosts file. Possibly in NIS maps as well.

Point 4 is especially telling; I don't see any reason for gethostbyname() to
introduce a restriction between two interfaces when that both operate correctly
without the restriction. Especially not a restriction that prevents access to
actual web sites. Telling users that The owner of that site shouldn't have
named it that is not helpful.

[Bug 788122] Re: sqlitebrowser version is not compatible with sqlite

2011-05-25 Thread Stéphane List
Sorry, you can delete this bug.
I have to use sqlite3 instead of sqlite.

Why not using alternatives to link sqlite to sqlite2 or sqlite3 ?

[Bug 787822] Re: 'virtualenv -p python3 /tmp/xx' should work but doesn't

2011-05-25 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package python-virtualenv - 1.6-2ubuntu1

---
python-virtualenv (1.6-2ubuntu1) oneiric; urgency=low

  * debian/patches/remove_syspath0_on_reinvoke.patch
When virtualenv.py is re-invoked, remove sys.path[0], since it points
to /usr/share/pyshared, which causes the wrong version of
pkg_resources to be imported. This fixes -p python3 on Debian.

[Bug 781516] Re: [MIR] libtirpc, rpcbind

2011-05-25 Thread Stéphane Graber
** Description changed:

  The new nfs-utils in Debian adds dependencies on libtirpc and rpcbind
  for IPv6. One is a network-sensitive library and the other is a network
  server, so I guess we'll want some careful review.

+ Please do not process this MIR until we have a new libtirpc in Debian
+ dropping the build-dep on libgss-dev.

  == libtirpc ==
  * Availability: Package is in universe, synced from Debian
  * Rationale: Dependency of rpcbind which is required for IPv6 support
  * Security:
  ** No CVE: http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvekey.cgi?keyword=tirpc
  ** 2 old (2008) secunia advisories:
http://secunia.com/advisories/product/17898/?task=advisories (fixed by upstream)
  ** Ubuntu CVE tracker: none
  ** SUID/SGID binaries: none
  ** Executables in sbin: none
  ** Daemons: none
  * QA:
  ** Just a library with two binary packages (one for the lib and one -dev), no
debconf question or configuration.
  ** No bug in Ubuntu: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libtirpc/+bugs
  ** No critical bugs in Debian:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgreport.cgi?repeatmerged=nosrc=libtirpc
  ** Package is maintained in Debian though not very active (last upload in
December, moved to testing in February)
- ** Build-depends on universe package libgss-dev which seems useless and
should be dropped
- *** A rebuild without the build-depend worked fine
- *** Output of ldd is identical
- *** Output of strings is identical
+ ** Currently Build-depends on universe package libgss-dev but isn't
necessary. Next Debian upload will drop it.
+
+ == rpcbind ==
+ * Availability: Package is in universe, synced from Debian.
+ * Rationale: Replacement of portmap as a nfs-utils build-depend required for
IPv6 support.
+ * Security:
+ ** No CVE that seem to target the current code base:
http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvekey.cgi?keyword=tirpc
+ ** No secunia advisories: http://secunia.com/search/?search=rpcbind
+ ** Ubuntu CVE tracker: none
+ ** SUID/SGID binaries: none
+ ** Executables in sbin: /sbin/rpcbind (the daemon) and /usr/sbin/rpcinfo (a
client)
+ ** Daemons: rpcbind (sysvinit script, probably to be converted to upstart
similar to what was done for portmap)
+ * QA:
+ ** No debconf question, one config file in /etc (/etc/insserv.conf.d/rpcbind)
but no user changes required
+ ** No critical bugs in Ubuntu:
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/rpcbind/+bugs
+ ** No critical bugs in Debian:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgreport.cgi?repeatmerged=nosrc=rpcbind

[Bug 781716] Re: Post install check assumes dpkg-vendor

2011-05-25 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package nova - 2011.3~bzr1108-0ubuntu1

---
nova (2011.3~bzr1108-0ubuntu1) oneiric; urgency=low

  [ Thomas Goirand ]
  * Removes embedded jquery.js from nova-doc package.
  * Added some manpages stubs to make package lintian clean.
  * Adds a nova-volume.default where the admin can decide what VG to use.
  * debian/nova-objectstore.logrotate working in Debian.
  * Do not have debian/*.upstart files in Debian. Using debian/*.upstart.in
  and copying them as .upstart only if building in Ubuntu.
  * Nova init files reviewed so that they are working in Debian.
  * Initscripts of nova-compute now has a Should-Start: libvirt-bin
  * nova-compute.postinst working with libvirt group in Debian.
  * Reviewed the package descriptions.
  * Reviewed some dependencies in debian/control (added some adduser and
  lsb-base depends).
  * Added missing binary Depends: (nova-manage must depends on
  python-amqplib unless failing puiparts tests, nova-compute is pretty
  usless without qemu-utils)
  * Removes .gitignore files from binaries.
  * Don't package nova-manage.1 man page if we aren't building docs.
  * Packages correctly: nova-manage.1 and not novamanage.1 !!!

  [ Soren Hansen ]
  * Bump required version of libvirt-bin on Ubuntu to 0.8.8.
  * Drop the last of the AOE dependencies. iSCSI is the default
nowadays.
  * Make the decision about the name of the libvirt group at build time
rather than runtime. (LP: #781716)

  [ Vishvananda Ishaya ]
  * Add dd to the sudo cmd list.
  * Add a nova-vncproxy package.

color-manager

Rationale: In Oneiric we want to introduce ICC-based color management on
the operating system level, using the same architecture as Fedora does.
gnome-color-manager is part of this architecture. Therefore we need it
in Main. This MIR is a work item of the following Blueprint:

https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/desktop-o-icc-color-
management

According to the Blueprint additional demand on CD space for the whole
introduction of color management is around 300K only.

Security: No security vulnerabilities known at CVE and Secunia, no SUID
components, no daemons, has /usr/sbin/gcm-install-system-wide executable
which seems to install ICC profiles for availability in the whole
system.

Quality assurance: Installs without debconf questions (package has no
maintainer scripts at all), after installation color management can be
configured via System - Preferences - Color Profiles. The
package is maintained upstream as new releases occur regularly and they
get packaged for Ubuntu by Robert Ancell who works for Canonical (see
debian/changelog).

UI standards: Seem to be fulfilled, the package contains the usual
translation files and it appears in the menus with System -
Preferences - Color Profiles, so the .desktop file must be there.

Dependencies: Argyll is recommended by gnome-color-manager and so it
should also get promoted to Main. Argyll is the software for supporting
color calibration hardware which is an important part of color
management.

Maintenance: See Quality assurance.

Upstream Qt bug: http://bugreports.qt.nokia.com/browse/QTBUG-10512

Seems like it is fixed in Qt 4.6.3. Hmm, it seems like I have Qt 4.7.2.
Maybe some old libs there after upgrade.

[Bug 779826] Re: USB3 devices stopped working after kernel upgrade.

2011-05-25 Thread Rocko
2.6.39-3? Do you mean the mainline 2.6.39-oneiric kernel?

Your best best is to go back to 2.6.38-8-generic, where USB3 works, or
to compile your own 2.6.39 kernel but with commit
dfa49c4ad120a784ef1ff0717168aa79f55a483a reverted. I've attached this
particular commit in case it helps.

Currently, glibc displays dates in the pl_PL locale as:

This format violates several conventions for date abbreviations in the Polish
language. I include a patch against the current CVS localedata with the
following changes:

* non-standard weekday abbreviations are replaced with standard ones
* non-standard month abbreviations are replaced with standard ones (based on
Roman numerals)
* middle-endian format (never used in Poland) is replaced with the little-endian
one (by far the most popular)
* standard padding is introduced, i.e. h:m:s are zero-padded, day of the month
is not padded
* fields are properly separated

With the patch, dates are displayed as:

Pn, 6 VIII 1984, 01:23:45 CEST

which matches the most common usage.

Please notice that the abbreviations are no longer fixed-width. Since this is
also the case in several other locales, I suppose it is not a problem.

well, you could use that for the long format, but it seems not
convenient for the short (abbreviated) format. Both day names and month
names are variable length.

My understanding is also that day and month names in Polish are spelled
with small initial letters.

 Please notice that the abbreviations are no longer fixed-width. Since this is
 also the case in several other locales, I suppose it is not a problem.

The recommendation is that the abbreviated format be fixed
format/lenght, as this is intended to be used in log messages.

[Sorry for delay, I have been on vacation for the last few days.]

First, some background to answer Mr. Drepper's and Mr. Simonsen's
questions.

Weekdays:

Weekday abbreviations are not part of any official standard. They ones described
above are, however, used nearly universally in calendars.

Examples of use:

* http://kalendarz.pwn.pl/ [calendar of PWN (Polish Scientific Publishers),
publisher of the largest and most authoritative Polish-language encyclopedias
and dictionaries]
* http://lot.pl/ [timetable of LOT, the largest Polish airline]

Please note that these abbreviations can only appear standalone or as part of a
standalone date (and yes, while Polish weekday names are lowercase, they are
not). To abbreviate weekday names in an intertextual context (which would be
quite uncommon), one would have to use an ad hoc abbreviation following standard
rules, i.e. match the case of the word, end with a consonant, and be followed by
a dot, e.g. 'poniedziałek' could be abbreviated as 'pn.', 'pon.', or 'poniedz.'.

Date:

Modern dictionaries of Polish language allow the following date
abbreviations:

* 6 VIII 1984 (older dictionaries also allowed 6.VIII.1984)
*

Robert, as you are doing well maintaining gnome-color-manager, could you
also keep Argyll up to date and get it into Main? Argyll provides the
support for color calibration devices and so it is an important part of
operating-system-level color management.

[Bug 788158] [NEW] Oneiric: 404 page when trying to buy something

2011-05-25 Thread Michael Terry
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-center

When I click the Buy button in Oneiric, I got asked for my SSO username
and password. Then after entering that, it brought me to a 404 page on
ubuntu.com (embedded in software-center).

I tried again, on a different for-purchase app and this time did not get
prompted for username/password (so must have been valid last time and
saved), but still got the 404.

[Bug 788145] Re: [MIR] gnome-color-manager

2011-05-25 Thread Till Kamppeter
Argyll is recommended by gnome-color-manager and so it would need to get
into Main, too. It is well maintained upstream but not well maintained
in Ubuntu. See bug 782584.

One could drop it from the recommended packages of gnome-color-manager,
but this way we would have a color-managed distro without support for
calibration devices.

[Bug 788162] [NEW] Oneiric: Can't reinstall previous purchases

2011-05-25 Thread Michael Terry
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-center

If I try to reinstall previous purchases, I get asked to sign into the
Software Center, I do, then it brings me to the Previous Purchases list
but there are zero items. Though I have purchased several apps.

What's the cross-release story for such apps? Are they automatically
provided for each release, or only if/when the publisher decides to make
it available for the next release?

If so, some sort of better user feedback about that would be good.
Like, you bought these apps before, but they aren't available for
11.10, sorry or something. Just so I know Software Center hasn't eaten
my apps.
