Sorry for getting off-topic. I just cannot stay calm reading everywhere that Ubuntu gets ruined. Me too, I liked it out-of-the-box from Breezy to Jaunty. [Bug 760131] Re: Power consumption raised significantly in natty
"*Grar*. The "conservative" regulator only saves power on really ancient hardware. On current hardware it *loses* you battery life." Good to know, Mr. Jenkins. I suppose this information ought to be widely proliferated, as many Linux kernel manuals (as Google readily shows), published as recently as this year, still say that Conservative is better for all battery devices, and makes no distinction between old and new hardware. At any rate, it was just an experiment, since I'd guess the main issue for most is the excessive heat. At least, most people I've talked to with this problem thought that was the most immediately noticeable change on their laptops, and discovered the decreased battery life and found out about the increased power consumption regression later. "Believe it or not, Linux distributions aren't _quite_ so incompetent as to leave massive battery life/heat wins on the table for years, by not bothering to simply set an existing configuration option when running on a laptop." As far I understand what's been going on here, people are just trying to discover short-term treatments, not a cure, so to speak, while they patiently wait for a true fix from the Kernel Team. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/760131 Title: Power consumption raised significantly in natty To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-release-notes/+bug/760131/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 751689] Re: Thinkpad x201* overheats due to slow fans when on 'auto'
Issue : Hav this problem while running videos like GoogleIO on several tabs, on chrome or firefox apps (adobe flash player installed), on my dell inspiron laptops: n5030(i3,4GiB), 1525(core2 duo3GiB), & on latitude e5420(i7-2620M, 8GiB), which on prolonged CPU usage(all cores) of over 100% just SHUTDOWN (processes killed). My old dell inspiron-6400(dual core,4GiB), HP-530(dual core,2GiB), do go high on CPU usage, but get stable (on watch). The Dell Desktop(Pentium D, 2GiB) works just fine (with other issue - wifi conn suddenly droppd). All this... while the ancient HP Pavilion(AMD64Athlon) is handling 10.10 well & the ancient dell-celeron(128Mib) runs XUbuntu smoothly. Resolution : Waiting for the system to settledown (on startup), then, monitoring the CPU usage, using System-Monitor, & a lil patience has helped most times. Running one video and a few regular pages on the browser apps, jets the CPU to over 90~95% , then drops to around 30~40% and stabilized, though opening more links (one or more) shoots the CPU near perfect. At this point, I have been switching to the System-Monitor and just WAIT for the CPU history graph to come down.. It comes back to below 50%. Opening another app, like Eclipse, or Gimp takes the CPU usage to around 65~75% and comes back down to around 40~50%. For me, the pain point is tabbed-browsing. While opening more tabs, not scrolling through the pages seems to help get the CPU history graph back to <50%. [Bug 796431] [NEW] Updates and downloads fails to install
Public bug reported: It seems to be a problem with tzdata. I have now made 2 ISO image CD's from ubuntu site from different computers, and I get the same problem in that everything seems 100%, until I try to play music, watch a movie or install any of my downloads/ updates. [Bug 796422] Re: postinst chown can fail
** Description changed: Binary package hint: byobu 16:46:26> Setting up byobu (2.68-0ubuntu1.1) ... 16:46:26> chown: invalid user: `asac' 16:46:33> thanks kirkland :-P This needs to be handled more gracefully. + + + SRU + - Impact: Upgrading users could experience a problem with Byobu's postinst, which touches a flag in each users' screen run directory. If a user's name has changed since their screen run directory was created at boot, then Byobu's chown procedure might fail. This is perhaps more likely to happen on long running uptime servers. + - How addressed: The chown command used in Byobu's postinst was ugly and naive. Instead, use chown --reference against the parent directory. Also, || true this command, as it's hardly essential to the package upgrade. + - How to reproduce: Create a test user, "foo". As user foo, start a byobu session. Exit that session. Rename user "foo" to "bar". Note that /var/run/S-foo still exists. Upgrade byobu. Byobu's postinst will touch /var/run/S-foo/byobu.reload-required, and try to chown it to "foo", except "foo" does not exist. + - Regression potential: Patch is trivial, clean, regression potential is negligible. + - Minimal patch: http://paste.ubuntu.com/625633/ + ** Changed in: byobu (Ubuntu Lucid) Status: Triaged => Fix Committed ** Changed in: byobu (Ubuntu Maverick) Status: Triaged => Fix Committed ** Changed in: byobu (Ubuntu Natty) Status: Triaged => Fix Committed -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/796422 Title: postinst chown can fail To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/byobu/+bug/796422/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 527458] Re: please include status messages/tooltips
Ha! I just discovered this bug report and now I know why I have been losing tool-tips on indicator applets over the past few versions. The decision(s) to remove or drastically change functionality like this [without giving the user an adequate and easy way to get the functionality back] are going to ruin Ubuntu. The is the 2nd major horrible design decision in this release that I am aware of to date. The other being the overlay scroll bars and no convenient way to revert to classical scroll bars that have been around for what, freaking ever? And It's ironic that the same class of annoyances that drove one away from Windows and to Ubuntu, would also wind up driving one away from Ubuntu. I just realized that I have been using, praising, installing and recommending Ubuntu for about 5 years; and I hope this doesn't change but it may soon. I'm not going to repeat any arguments for the tooltips since in my opinion they are already well supported by many earlier in this thread and yet even though they seem to me to outweigh and outnumber all the arguments against tooltips, they are essentially ignored and displaced with an illegitimate oligarchical design decision based on a utopian ideal. This thread is the epitome of ridiculousness. That it should take nearly 200 hundred comments to try and get back a feature that never should have been removed to begin with. I'm saving a copy of it because I think it makes a great development anti-pattern. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/527458 Title: please include status messages/tooltips To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/indicator-application/+bug/527458/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
