Re: [Bug 731737] Re: [testcases] Networking / NM Laptop Test section is outdated

2011-06-30 Thread Mark Nighswonger
Hi Mathieu,
I will get with Sergio Zanchetta on this. All the laptop testing has been
moved into, http://laptop.qa.ubuntu.com/ , the laptop testing tracker. All
the information still needs to be updated.
Will the functions of Network Manager change drastically? Do you have an
estimate of completion of the developmental changes? I will probably do some
interim updating because I don't think the test is usable in it's current
state.
I will get back to you after I hear from Sergio.
Thanks,
Mark

Unassigning from myself because these will need an overhaul anyway, but
it's not on my todo list for now (seeing as there is a lot of work left
even just for the development and maintenance for NM). However, you are
very welcome to update the testcases appropriately.

 Title:
[testcases] Networking / NM Laptop Test section is outdated

Status in “network-manager” package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

 Bug description:
  Binary package hint: network-manager

It appears that the Networking section for Laptop Testing,
http://testcases.qa.ubuntu.com/Plans/LaptopTesting , is outdated and needs
to be rewritten by someone who knows what needs to be tested and how. The
current test would fail every time as written. There is no longer a computer
icon, so that may be an indication of how old this version was testing for.
This is the section that will fail:
  Verify Release of Device
  Case ID: hcn-002
In the terminal, run sudo ifdown [interface] where [interface] is the
 interface name, above.
* In the terminal, run ifconfig and verify that only the loopback device
 (lo) is listed.*
There is always at least four devices listed. Apparently a knowledgeable
person can tell that the device is up or down but that is not what this
question asks for. Someone tell me what we want and I will be glad to
rewrite it. If we are looking for a device that is up or down, we need to
write that in plain english so anyone can do this. I tried to address this
as a question but was recommended that I file a bug.

  1)lsb_release -rd
  Description: Ubuntu Natty (development branch)
  Release: 11.04

  2)apt-cache policy pkgname
N: Unable to locate package pkgname
Don't know where in the software center this information is.

  3) I expected to test this application and give good, useful,
  feedback.

  4) I could not perform a useful test because of outdated testing
  procedures.

[Bug 803932] [NEW] plymouth-stop: race condition between rc RUNLEVEL=2 and display manager

2011-06-30 Thread Steve Langasek
Public bug reported:

while debugging a different bug in lightdm, I noticed that the plymouth-
stop job has a race condition. If rc RUNLEVEL=2 is emitted at boot
before 'starting lightdm' (etc), a subsequent 'starting lightdm' will
not block on the plymouth-stop job to complete, possibly causing the DM
to start up before plymouth has been stopped. For a DM that doesn't
properly integrate with plymouth, this could cause problems with VTs.

On my computer (the screen resolution is 1366x768), if I resize the play
bar like in the screenshot 2Banshee_before_restart.png and restart
Banshee, the window is going to be bigger than the screen
(3Banshee_after_restart1.png and 4Banshee_after_restart2.png).

I'm using Ubuntu 11,04 and Banshee 2.0.0

[Bug 803858] Re: Unable to switch between Chinese and English in LightDM

2011-06-30 Thread Robert Ancell
This is the situation as I understand it:
- There are users, who need to use the same session (e.g. Unity) but frequently
switch languages, due to applications working better in one locale than another.
- In general users will not need to do this, but this is particularly useful
for Chinese language users (who switch between Chinese and English).
- This is currently possible in GDM, as it has a language option on login (that
is set the the users default as set in language selector). This is not
possible in GDM3, as they are dropping this functionality.
- LightDM does not have a language option, as the correct way to set the
language is in the language selector in the users session (expected to be
changed very infrequently).

Please comment if this is incorrect.

[Bug 803770] Re: Writter crashes when saving in .doc

2011-06-30 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Ignacio Varela, thank you for taking the time to report this bug and
helping to make Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is missing.
Please follow these instructions to have apport report a new bug about
your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

Now open your file manager, navigate to your /var/crash directory and open the
crash report you wish to submit.
If this fails you will have to open a terminal and file your report with
'ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash' where _my_crash_report.crash is
the crash you would like to report. If you get an error that you aren't allowed
to access this report you will have to file it with 'sudo ubuntu-bug
/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash'.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

[Bug 795985] Re: gcalctool needs to interpret comma (, ) as decimal dot (.)

Workaround (with probable side-effects):

System/Preferences/Keyboard - Layouts - Options - Numeric keyboard delete

Set this to Legacy key with dot
After this the calculator accepts the numeric decimal point.

[Bug 693852] Re: Decimal point on my numeric keyboard does not work. Is it because of regional settings?

2011-06-30 Thread Ypthor
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 795985 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/795985

This still happens in Ubuntu 11.04.

In my case the system's language and locale are both english, but the keyboard
layout is hungarian.
Unfortunately I could not set the locale to hungarian, this combination - which
also had its quirks before - was not available in the installer.

In hungary the comma is used as the decimal point, so I guess Ubuntu
interprets the numeric del/point(! yes, the actual button has a point on
it) button as comma, which is unacceptable by the calculator.

Here are the different interpretations as I understand it:

physical keyboard - POINT
layout (as shown in the keyboard preferences) - POINT
layout (as served by Ubuntu) - COMMA
gcalctool - whatever Ubuntu serves
openoffice - whatever the decimal point is in the locale set within OO
gedit - whatever Ubuntu serves

Workaround (with probable side-effects):

System/Preferences/Keyboard - Layouts - Options - Numeric keyboard delete
key behaviour
Set this to Legacy key with dot
After this the calculator accepts the numeric decimal point.

Re: [Bug 760131] Re: Power consumption raised significantly in natty

2011-06-30 Thread Matthew Hessel
I would offer the opinion that this is more like a regression as this
exposed a kernel regression as proper aspm handling requires changes
to the drivers in the kernel.

In the article, it mentions that the windows drivers may have
additional bits for aspm functionality, thus overriding BIOS handover.

This is not unlike previous issues seen with linux where many BIOS
implementations are usually just good enough to get windows working,
specific functions they are supposed to do are not done according to
standards.

Before this issue there were numerous issues with suspend/resume,
DPMI, intel graphics bios missing resolution info, and more. Each
issue resulted in hacks to work around until drivers or the kernel got
a more permanent fix.

On 6/30/11, Jon Grossart 760...@bugs.launchpad.net wrote:
While, I agree that this a huge problem overall, I'm think I have to
agree with the idea that it's not a regression. If you read the
comments on Phoronix from the actual path author (which was only linked
on the little side bar of the page, not the main column), he makes the
 statement a little more clear.

 http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_itempx=OTYwNA

The patch enables correct handling of the ASPM to the BIOS if it can
handle it, otherwise it lets the kernel do it. However, it then depends
on the hardware drivers to setup the correct values. That is the
problem that is happening with this bug according to the author. The
kernel is now handling the situation correctly, and it is revealing a
lot of long standing bugs in a lot/most of the drivers and BIOSes in
that they don't handle ASPM correctly, or coded to the fact that the
kernel was incorrectly managing it before. Quite frankly, it sounds a
lot like the whole IE6 problem plaguing web browsers.

Maybe this has something to do with the overall higher power consumption
in Ubuntu often seen. On netbook in WinXP I can it down to 5W idling.
In Ubuntu with same config, it won't go below 7-8W. The only thing I
can think that would make the different is the driver
 settings/abilities.

So what is the correct fix? That, I don't know. BIOS and hardware
drivers are real culprits it seems. Chances of BIOS fixes are probably
slim for the vast majority of systems. And the drivers changes would
probably be numerous and slow going.

 Bug description:
This is a regression moving from maverick-natty. With the same sort
of light interactive usage, Battery life has gone from ~4 hours to
   2:45 or so.

Running powertop shows the system in P-state Turbo mode 10-15% of
the time. Typically this was almost zero in maverick, 98+% of the
time maverick was in the lowest state.

wakeups reported in the 5-600/s range where previously (from memory)
it was 200 ish. i915 driver is high on the list. This is
irrespective of whether running unity or classic desktop.

[Bug 803943] [NEW] compiz consuming a lot of cpu

2011-06-30 Thread Marco Biscaro
Public bug reported:

This problem is exclusive to unity (when running compiz with gnome-
panel, this doesn't happen).

1. Close all windows opened, if any
2. Open a terminal and run 'top'
3. Notice that compiz is consuming a lot of CPU time (although there is nothing
special running). In my case, it's consuming about 13% when idle.
4. Unmaximize the terminal window, if maximized, and start moving the window
slowly
5. Notice that compiz is now consuming much more CPU than before (in my case,
arround 50%).
6. Open a video.
7. Notice that compiz consume much more CPU than idle (about 25% in my case),
although I'm not doing anything related to window management.
8. (optional) Install the gnome-panel package and choose GNOME classic in
login screen. Start compiz with compiz --replace and follow the steps from 1
to 7. Notice that the CPU consuming is much lower (in my case, 1% when idle,
25% when moving the window and 9% with the video).

[Bug 803858] Re: Unable to switch between Chinese and English in LightDM

2011-06-30 Thread Robert Ancell
I think the correct layer to do this in is the session layer, rather
than by getting the user to explicitly choose a language. This is
because (as I understand it) users do not need to pick a particular
language, but instead have a small set they use.

This could be accomplished by making new sessions /usr/share/xsessions
/gnome-en.desktop and /usr/share/xsessions/gnome-zh.desktop which are
copies of /usr/share/xsessions/gnome.desktop. This would mean the user
could choose the session language from the session type combo box.

In /etc/X11/Xsession.d/99locale-session, you can check for the session and
override the users locale settings, i.e.:
if [ $DESKTOP_SESSION = gnome-en ] ; then
LANG=en_US.utf8
DESKTOP_SESSION=gnome
elif [ $DESKTOP_SESSION = gnome-zh ] ; then
LANG=zh_CN.utf8
DESKTOP_SESSION=gnome
fi

(This is not tested and theoretical)

[Bug 801034] Re: SD card reader in Macbook does not work

2011-06-30 Thread Jussi Pakkanen
** Description changed:

- The SD card reader in my Macbook Pro worked once, but now when I plug in
- a card (16 GB micro SDHC using an adapter) it does not work any more.
- Rebooting and trying again does not help. Dmesg fills up with these
- kinds of messages:

[Bug 782508] Re: Dash: full text search not possible

2011-06-30 Thread Jochen Fahrner
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 764857 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/764857

This is not a duplicate of #764857, which is a whishlist. According to
the documentation Unity uses Zeitgeist as search engine, and with
Zeitgeist fts-extension (which is installed by default) fulltext
searches should be possible. But they don't work, so this is a bug, not
a whish.

Looking at http://archive.canonical.com/pool/partner/a/adobe-flashplugin/

I dont see an adobe-flashplugin_10.3.181.26.orig.tar.gz but I do see
adobe-flashplugin_10.3.181.34.orig.tar.gz
Perhaps 10.3.181.26 was removed? The package needs to be updated?
