I expected the setting to take effect upon restarting gdm. What happened instead: I edited /etc/gdm/gdm.schemas to set the DisallowTCP setting to 'false'. The setting did not take effect upon restarting gdm. I edited /usr/share/gdm/gdm.schemas to set the DisallowTCP setting to 'false'. The setting took effect upon restarting gdm. [Bug 809911] [NEW] gnome terminal not repainted
Public bug reported: I'm running "Classic" Natty amd64 on a Dell XPS L502x laptop, using only the intel graphics. Very often (>50% of the time) when I switch workspaces to one with a gnome terminal open on it (gnome-terminal 2.32.1-0ubuntu3), the application area of the terminal is not repainted. The desktop background, terminal window decorations and menu bar and cursor are painted, but the rest of the window is left displaying whatever was on the screen on the previous workspace. Typing in the window clears the stale display and shows the typed text only where the new text is shown. Scrolling the terminal (e.g. hitting return in a full window) correctly renders the complete window. Less often this also happens when switching to the terminal window with alt-tab, with some or all elements of the window that was on top being left in the gnome terminal application area. [Bug 809903] [NEW] Power Management settings - 2nd hard drive never powers down
Public bug reported: Ubuntu's Power Management does not power off the hard drive unless you edit a file manually. Having cleanly installed Ubuntu on my old (desktop) computer for a friend, the 2nd hard drive never powers off - despite going into the Power Management settings and ticking the option "Spin down hard disks when possible". There are 2 actual hard drives in the case; there's no confusion with partitions appearing as separate hard drives. One hard drive is IDE and the other is SATA. The only way I could get the 2nd hard drive to switch off was to edit /etc/hdparm.conf and uncomment (remove the hash "#") from the line in that file which has the number 24 at the end (only one line had the number 24 at the end of it). Making that change in /etc/hdparm.conf - then saving that file and rebooting - definitely worked as when you access the 2nd drive after a few minutes, you hear it power on - you can clearly hear the sound of it powering on and then you can see the files on that drive. It also powers off again if left idle - which proves changing that file works, but the power saving option GUI does not work. I had previously reported this bug and I remember being told there was an update to one of the files (hdparm.conf I think?), but that bug report was closed. Please reconsider this bug report as it pertains to the Power Management setting GUI not powering off the hard drive(s) when the user ticks the box "Spin down hard disks when possible". ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/809903 Title: Power Management settings - 2nd hard drive never powers down To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/809903/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 809897] [NEW] Unity launcher appears UNDER windows though screencap shows it on top of windows
Public bug reported: Weird behaviour with Unity launcher. I run a fair number of windows during the day, Chrome, a couple terminator sessions, IRC, mumble and so forth. I usually maximize the chrome window and use the app switcher in compiz to swap between the other windows. What I've found is that at some point after I've been running for a while, the Unity launcher stops appearing on top of everything. Instead, it appears under all windows. Unfortunately, the graphics system seems to think this is not the case. I tried several screenshots and every single one showed the launcher and the app lens on top of everything, even though to me, it appeared below everything. So, I'm attaching a photo taken with a digital camera. If you look closely at the photo, you'll notice a couple of things. First, there's a Shutter window open showing one of the screen caps that clearly shows the launcher and app lens on top. BUT if you look just to the left, you'll see that in fact, the launcher is actually BEHIND the terminator window. Try as I might, every screencap shows the launcher as it SHOULD be, not as I actually see it. I'm running natty with latest updates and the nVidia binary drivers. This is on an Alienware M15x with an nVidia GeForce GT240M card. ** Affects: unity (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/809897 Title: Unity launcher appears UNDER windows though screencap shows it on top of windows To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/809897/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Ah. We seem to be thinking along the same lines. I saw the same nvidia- common issue in the log. jockey did not think I was running nvidia- current, but I certainly was. Re: [Bug 779512] Re: nut-2.6.0-1ubuntu3 behavior regression
Arnaud, Thanks for the reply! I imagine you are correct. I ran the command you suggested (below). Apparently nut knows the device it should connect to, but that device is "busy". Thank you for contributing to Ubuntu development. Now that we don't add the lame build-deps, we should either add lame as a binary dep so the user doesn't need to search for this manually, or continue with the old delta where we add the build-dep and the binary dep gets added automatically. [Bug 809885] [NEW] Single-quoted entries are invalid in /etc/resolv.conf on network install with NetworkManager disabled
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: casper Ubuntu release: Oneiric Ocelot (LiveCD daily image from 2011-07-13). Package: this is present in Casper 1.271. What I expected to happen: valid entries in /etc/resolv.conf. What happened instead: all entries in /etc/resolv.conf have single quotes around the values, causing problems while installing some other packages. More details about this problem: In a testing environment, we do network installs using the daily Oneiric images. One particularity is that we disable NetworkManager by creating an interface entry in /etc/interfaces prior to booting. Thus, scripts /casper-bottom/23networking is the sole responsible for creation of /etc/resolv.conf. 23networking parses the /tmp/net-${DEVICE}.conf file and takes the DNSDOMAIN value to fill up both the domain and search entries in resolv.conf, as well as the IPV4DNS{0,1} entries for the DNS servers. It ignores the rest of the values in the conf file. The ipconfig utility, which generates /tmp/net-${DEVICE}.conf files based on DHCP information, adds single quotes around the values. Files look like this: (actual net-eth0.conf from an Oneiric install) DEVICE='eth0' IPV4ADDR='10.153.104.249' IPV4BROADCAST='10.153.104.255' IPV4NETMASK='255.255.255.0' IPV4GATEWAY='10.153.104.1' IPV4DNS0='10.153.104.60' IPV4DNS1='0.0.0.0' HOSTNAME='' DNSDOMAIN='canonical.com' NISDOMAIN='' ROOTSERVER='10.153.104.60' ROOTPATH='' filename='/oneiric-desktop-i386/pxelinux.0' 23networking takes the values verbatim, including the quotes, and thus generates a resolv.conf that looks like this: # /etc/resolv.conf # Autogenerated by casper search 'canonical.com' domain 'canonical.com' nameserver '10.153.104.60' nameserver '0.0.0.0' This gives problems later on: while installing postfix, it constructs the hostname by taking the domain name from resolv.conf, coming up with things like host.'domain.com' which are invalid and cause postfix configuration to fail. Also, although an unlikely use case, trying to access hosts by name with this invalid resolv.conf also fails. This bug is not usually apparent because most installations use NetworkManager, which takes over resolv.conf, rebuilding it from DHCP information, which it doesn't quote, unlike ipconfig. This bug is very similar in nature to bug 709364. Whereas the change in ipconfig (from klibc) that caused that bug double-quoted DNSDOMAIN to allow for multiple dns domains, this change to ipconfig single-quotes all entries in the generated file, to prevent arbitrary code execution from scripts which simply source the /tmp/net-${DEVICE}.conf file (not the case with casper so it can safely strip the quotes). This change was introduced in klibc in this commit: commit 46a0f831582629612f0ff9707ad1292887f26bff Author: Ulrich Dangel Date: Fri Apr 15 18:22:08 2011 +0200 ** Affects: casper (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/809885 Title: Single-quoted entries are invalid in /etc/resolv.conf on network install with NetworkManager disabled To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/casper/+bug/809885/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 809880] [NEW] Auto-start never counts down
Public bug reported: This doesn't happen all the time, but I've seen it at least once.
