[Bug 809918] [NEW] /etc/gdm/gdm.schemas ignored in favor of /usr/share/gdm/gdm.schemas

2011-07-13 Thread Mike Mol
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu release: 11.04
Package: gdm

gdm:
  Installed: 2.32.1-0ubuntu3.2
  Candidate: 2.32.1-0ubuntu3.2
  Version table:
 *** 2.32.1-0ubuntu3.2 0

 2.30.5-0ubuntu4.1+langfixes~maverick1 0
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ maverick-backports/main i386
Packages

What I expected to happen:
I edited /etc/gdm/gdm.schemas to set the DisallowTCP setting to 'false'. I
expected the setting to take effect upon restarting gdm.

What happened instead:
I edited /etc/gdm/gdm.schemas to set the DisallowTCP setting to 'false'.
The setting did not take effect upon restarting gdm.

I edited /usr/share/gdm/gdm.schemas to set the DisallowTCP setting to 'false'.
The setting took effect upon restarting gdm.

(At this point, both /etc/gdm/gdm.schemas and /usr/share/gdm/gdm.schemas
have DisallowTCP set to 'false')

Leaving /usr/share/gdm/gdm.schemas with DisallowTCP set to 'false', I
again edited /etc/gdm/gdm.schemas to set the DisallowTCP setting to
'true'.

Upon restart of gdm, behavior was still such that DisallowTCP was set to
'false', indicating that /etc/gdm/gdm.schemas was being ignored in favor
of /usr/share/gdm/gdm.schemas.

[Bug 367856] Re: Contact is lost with internal HSDPA/UMTS modem after some random period - a suspend and wake cycle or a restart is needed to be able to use the modem again

2011-07-13 Thread Jeff Buchbinder
I can confirm that this is still going on in Natty (11.04).

Usually after a few suspend/resume cycles, the cdc_acm module is loaded
and recognized when a USB dongle is used, but NetworkManager refuses to
identify it properly. Currently running:

[Bug 807141] Re: Unity/Compiz seems to conflict with Conky

2011-07-13 Thread Anthropornis Nordenskjoldi
It is not just Conky that is affected. Sometimes the Dash stacks behind
an active application window, for example, Firefox.

I had stopped using a "Natty quasi rolling" PPA a few days ago and
initially thought that fixed things (as well as other issues like the
Unity panel randomly dying), but in the ensuing days, after reboots, the
stacking problem is still going with the default Natty versions of Unity
and Compiz.

[Bug 643658] Re: ia32-sun-java6-bin has improperly equal alternatives priority on amd64

2011-07-13 Thread Todd Vierling
This is _still_ broken in oneiric and the fix is absolutely trivial -
can someone please take this on in the official packaging? As it
currently stands, applications like eclipse for amd64 cannot run using
the default /usr/bin/java if ia32-sun-java6 is installed, without
altering the priorities.

worked fine. Thanks again.

[Bug 809911] [NEW] gnome terminal not repainted

2011-07-13 Thread Dr Eigen
Public bug reported:

I'm running "Classic" Natty amd64 on a Dell XPS L502x laptop, using only
the intel graphics.

Very often (>50% of the time) when I switch workspaces to one with a
gnome terminal open on it (gnome-terminal 2.32.1-0ubuntu3), the
application area of the terminal is not repainted. The desktop
background, terminal window decorations and menu bar and cursor are
painted, but the rest of the window is left displaying whatever was on
the screen on the previous workspace. Typing in the window clears the
stale display and shows the typed text only where the new text is shown.
Scrolling the terminal (e.g. hitting return in a full window) correctly
renders the complete window.

Less often this also happens when switching to the terminal window with
alt-tab, with some or all elements of the window that was on top being
left in the gnome terminal application area.

[Bug 809903] [NEW] Power Management settings - 2nd hard drive never powers down

2011-07-13 Thread turbolad
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu's Power Management does not power off the hard drive unless you
edit a file manually.

Having cleanly installed Ubuntu on my old (desktop) computer for a
friend, the 2nd hard drive never powers off - despite going into the
Power Management settings and ticking the option "Spin down hard disks
when possible". There are 2 actual hard drives in the case; there's no
confusion with partitions appearing as separate hard drives. One hard
drive is IDE and the other is SATA.

The only way I could get the 2nd hard drive to switch off was to edit
/etc/hdparm.conf and uncomment (remove the hash "#") from the line in
that file which has the number 24 at the end (only one line had the
number 24 at the end of it). Making that change in /etc/hdparm.conf -
then saving that file and rebooting - definitely worked as when you
access the 2nd drive after a few minutes, you hear it power on - you can
clearly hear the sound of it powering on and then you can see the files
on that drive. It also powers off again if left idle - which proves
changing that file works, but the power saving option GUI does not work.

I had previously reported this bug and I remember being told there was
an update to one of the files (hdparm.conf I think?), but that bug
report was closed. Please reconsider this bug report as it pertains to
the Power Management setting GUI not powering off the hard drive(s) when
the user ticks the box "Spin down hard disks when possible".

[Bug 809908] [NEW] perl n_tty_read seems to deadlock in bugzilla3 checksetup_nondebian.pl

2011-07-13 Thread Coert
Public bug reported:

When using the perl script checksetup.pl from the bugzilla3 package with
the '--reset-password' option the terminal hangs (it seems to deadlock,
because there is no CPU activity anymore for the perl process) on
waiting channel n_tty_read.

The terminal itself gives no prompt, because I've found bug #685284 I
suspect that the hangup is not due to perl or bugzilla's checksetup.pl

[Bug 754726] Re: Covers Unity's 'Close' button with orange box

2011-07-13 Thread Brendan Donegan
That's the label to tell you which monitor you're looking out - it needs
to be somewhere and cover something. The assumption is that you'll
finish arranging your monitors before actually wanting to use the
system.

I think this bug may be in another package but dont' know where. :P
Sorry.

I was able to switch to console and 'sudo restart gdm' and when I logged
in, the mouse was fine. I was also able to use the the keyboard mouse by
pressing shift_numLock, well mostly, it stopped working a few clicks in
but I can't be sure that I just didnt know how to use it and messed it
up somehow

[Bug 809897] [NEW] Unity launcher appears UNDER windows though screencap shows it on top of windows

2011-07-13 Thread Jeff Lane
Public bug reported:

Weird behaviour with Unity launcher. I run a fair number of windows
during the day, Chrome, a couple terminator sessions, IRC, mumble and so
forth. I usually maximize the chrome window and use the app switcher in
compiz to swap between the other windows. What I've found is that at
some point after I've been running for a while, the Unity launcher stops
appearing on top of everything.

Instead, it appears under all windows.

Unfortunately, the graphics system seems to think this is not the case.
I tried several screenshots and every single one showed the launcher and
the app lens on top of everything, even though to me, it appeared below
everything.

So, I'm attaching a photo taken with a digital camera. If you look
closely at the photo, you'll notice a couple of things. First, there's
a Shutter window open showing one of the screen caps that clearly shows
the launcher and app lens on top. BUT if you look just to the left,
you'll see that in fact, the launcher is actually BEHIND the terminator
window.

Try as I might, every screencap shows the launcher as it SHOULD be, not
as I actually see it.

I'm running natty with latest updates and the nVidia binary drivers.
This is on an Alienware M15x with an nVidia GeForce GT240M card.

[Bug 332381] Re: cheese records at a painfully slow fps

2011-07-13 Thread Attila Fulop
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 385344 ***

@Vish: I'm confused. I have a laptop. The symptoms are the same that
Chris and Guillaume described: Previewing is perfect, but at real
recording it gets choppy, useless actually. Which bug should I vote for,
or what is the correct way to "express my interest"?

2011-07-13 Thread Curtis Hovey
Ah. We seem to be thinking along the same lines. I saw the same nvidia-
common issue in the log. jockey did not think I was running nvidia-
current, but I certainly was. I reinstalled nvidia-common and nvidia-
settings, then reinstalled the headers and image. I am now running the
current image :).

I am not sure were the defect was, and I made my changes before I saw
your reply :(. jockey shows everything correctly now, but I do not know
if jockey or apt had an issue.

Re: [Bug 779512] Re: nut-2.6.0-1ubuntu3 behavior regression

2011-07-13 Thread Martin Ewing
Arnaud,

Thanks for the reply! I imagine you are correct. I ran the command you
suggested (below). Apparently nut knows the device it should connect to,
but that device is "busy". And running as root doesn't overcome the
problem... (And I don't know why I should have to make /var/run/nut,
either.)

I am not well versed in Ubuntu bug reporting. Do you think I need to submit
this separately? Or should I just wait until the next release? (The lazy
way out.)

Thanks again,
Martin

[Bug 797922] Re: kernel hangs in pm-hibernate on saving to disk

2011-07-13 Thread Seth Forshee
Okay, they are probably different problems then.

Let's try this next. Boot with no_console_suspend, then switch to a
virtual terminal 1 (i.e. press Ctrl-Alt-1). Then press Alt-Sysrq-9, and
you should see a message that says "Loglevel set to 9". Now run 'sudo
pm-hibernate' and report back what appears on the screen when the
machine hangs. You can just take a picture of the screen if you wish.

[Bug 809619] Re: Please merge sox 14.3.2-1 (universe) from debian unstable

2011-07-13 Thread Micah Gersten
Thank you for contributing to Ubuntu development. Now that we don't add
the lame build-deps, we should either add lame as a binary dep so the
user doesn't need to search for this manually, or continue with the old
delta where we add the build-dep and the binary dep gets added
automatically. I actually think the second option is better as it's
less fragile even though the diff will be 1 extra line (in
debian/rules).

[Bug 809885] [NEW] Single-quoted entries are invalid in /etc/resolv.conf on network install with NetworkManager disabled

2011-07-13 Thread Daniel Manrique
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: casper

Ubuntu release: Oneiric Ocelot (LiveCD daily image from 2011-07-13).
Package: this is present in Casper 1.271.
What I expected to happen: valid entries in /etc/resolv.conf.
What happened instead: all entries in /etc/resolv.conf have single quotes
around the values, causing problems while installing some other packages.

More details about this problem:

In a testing environment, we do network installs using the daily Oneiric
images. One particularity is that we disable NetworkManager by creating
an interface entry in /etc/interfaces prior to booting. Thus, scripts
/casper-bottom/23networking is the sole responsible for creation of
/etc/resolv.conf.

23networking parses the /tmp/net-${DEVICE}.conf file and takes the
DNSDOMAIN value to fill up both the domain and search entries in
resolv.conf, as well as the IPV4DNS{0,1} entries for the DNS servers. It
ignores the rest of the values in the conf file. The ipconfig utility,
which generates /tmp/net-${DEVICE}.conf files based on DHCP information,
adds single quotes around the values. Files look like this:

(actual net-eth0.conf from an Oneiric install)

DEVICE='eth0'
IPV4ADDR='10.153.104.249'
IPV4BROADCAST='10.153.104.255'
IPV4NETMASK='255.255.255.0'
IPV4GATEWAY='10.153.104.1'
IPV4DNS0='10.153.104.60'
IPV4DNS1='0.0.0.0'
HOSTNAME=''
DNSDOMAIN='canonical.com'
NISDOMAIN=''
ROOTSERVER='10.153.104.60'
ROOTPATH=''
filename='/oneiric-desktop-i386/pxelinux.0'

23networking takes the values verbatim, including the quotes, and thus
generates a resolv.conf that looks like this:

# /etc/resolv.conf
# Autogenerated by casper
search 'canonical.com'
domain 'canonical.com'
nameserver '10.153.104.60'
nameserver '0.0.0.0'

This gives problems later on: while installing postfix, it constructs
the hostname by taking the domain name from resolv.conf, coming up with
things like host.'domain.com' which are invalid and cause postfix
configuration to fail. Also, although an unlikely use case, trying to
access hosts by name with this invalid resolv.conf also fails.

This bug is not usually apparent because most installations use
NetworkManager, which takes over resolv.conf, rebuilding it from DHCP
information, which it doesn't quote, unlike ipconfig.

This bug is very similar in nature to bug 709364. Whereas the change in
ipconfig (from klibc) that caused that bug double-quoted DNSDOMAIN to
allow for multiple dns domains, this change to ipconfig single-quotes
all entries in the generated file, to prevent arbitrary code execution
from scripts which simply source the /tmp/net-${DEVICE}.conf file (not
the case with casper so it can safely strip the quotes). This change was
introduced in klibc in this commit:

[Bug 809888] [NEW] Calc:Some functions treat '5 as a number, some don't

2011-07-13 Thread Jukka Lind
Public bug reported:

In Calc:
Situation: cell A1 has a number typed in as text w apostrophe beginning such as
 '123

This cell gives diffenrent results in functions. SUM(A1) gives zero answer, but
=A1 gives a value of 123.

This can be misleading, especially when the apostrophe is not shown on
the sheet. I suggest the numerical functions always try first to convert
text to numbers.

[Bug 809880] [NEW] Auto-start never counts down

2011-07-13 Thread Barry Warsaw
Public bug reported:

This doesn't happen all the time, but I've seen it at least once. With
today's Oneiric updates, once you get to the grub screen, the timer
never counts down from 10s so you never get an auto-start. However, you
can hit Return to force the selection and get things going.

** Affects: grub (Ubuntu)

[Bug 761176] Re: wlan (AR928X, ath9k) slow since upgrade to natty

2011-07-13 Thread Mark
I expect it has fixed decker's problem. I have my router set in mixed
WPA/WPA2 mode and I have not disabled h/w encryption via the commands
decker suggested.

[Bug 783130] Re: Missing users on Ubuntu login screen

2011-07-13 Thread turbolad
Do you need any more information?

This problem affects me and others. It's annoying when I have to share
the computer and the other usernames are not on the list.

I do get the feeling that Ubuntu are not fixing bugs as quickly as is
claimed with open source software, such as security flaws being fixed
within hours of being discovered.

[Bug 809878] [NEW] Wireless network & graphics card stop working after upgrade to 2.6.38-10

2011-07-13 Thread bastik
Public bug reported:

natty - after automatic upgrade from 2.6.38.8.22 to 2.6.38.10.25, the
graphics card (ATI Mobility Radeon X600) stops working. (Unity won't
start, instead Gnome 2 is loaded.) I am using xserver-xorg-video-radeon
driver.

Also, the Network is down. (Indicator in panel shows empty segment.)

When booting the old kernel, everything works.

[Bug 281732] Re: Mute button not properly working on current Lenovo Thinkpads x200/x200s , t400/t500, X300/X301, & W series

2011-07-13 Thread Seth Forshee
Matt: This bug has actually been fixed for a long time and should be
fixed in all supported versions of Ubuntu. It looks like no one ever
marked this bug as fixed though, so I'm doing so now. Since it doesn't
appear this fixes the problem for your model, I suggest that you open a
new bug by running 'ubuntu-bug linux' from a terminal.

** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu)
   Status: Confirmed => Fix Released
