Ah; correction, I see (when I run the right command) that ia32-libs, wine1.2 and wine1.3 all look for lib32v4l. Still, addressing this in ia32-libs would be a move in the wrong direction. [Bug 563895] Re: grub2 fails to boot or install when an LVM snapshot exists
While installation security updates to my lucid system, this made my system unbootable last week. I spent half an hour today to make it bootable again. I booted from supergrubdisk which also failed to detect LVM (it usually did). I ended up using Knoppix and noticed the leftover snapshot (created via schroot) on boot, deleting it. I then tried to chroot into my Lucid system which failed because Knoppix is i386 and my Lucid install is amd64. Rebooting with the Lucid installation medium, I was surprised that the grub installation on my hard drive magically started to work again and booted fine into my Lucid install. I would deem this a really important problem and I am all for fixing it in Lucid given that a patch exists. libjpeg is already multiarch-capable in Ubuntu, and the only reason v4l- utils wants ia32-libs is to build a biarch library package. After installing Oneiric Alpha 3, i386, and testing, I cannot reproduce your error. Subsequently, there is a segmentation fault in "aptitude" in Alpha 3, which makes me think that the aptitude package should not be used for installing software at this time. As such, and after talking with George Edison (george-edison55), I have been allowed to change the status of the "StackApplet" part of this bug. My recommendation is this: run the following to install stackapplet: sudo apt-get install stackapplet Note that I have dissected the entire .deb and all packages related to it. Absolutely none of them, including the dependencies of the stackapplet package as well as the dependencies of the dependencies, have python-gnomeapplet, nor gnome-python-desktop, in the packages. (triple checked all packages involved, all versions from Lucid onwards, both manual dissection of the control files as well as using packages.ubuntu.com). As this cannot be replicated in apt-get which acts in the same manner generally as aptitude, and as both would return the same issue, the status of this bug is being changed. I think this is not reproducible as it happens as a graphical lockup, but seems the machine goes into Suspend and I could wake the machine up by pressing the Power button.
