[Bug 828516] [NEW] The problem of selecting text with the mouse in Writer

2011-08-17 Thread VEvgeniy
Public bug reported:

The problem of selecting text with the mouse, if the background is a picture.
The problem is very urgent, especially for organizations that do letterheads.
Most people use this mouse to work with text. Drawing on the work in the
background captures the text itself.

[Bug 492182] Re: OpenOffice cashes on exit (if I edit my document)

2011-08-17 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Chrisyalden, your crash report is missing. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

Now open your file manager, navigate to your /var/crash directory and open the
crash report you wish to submit.
If this fails you will have to open a terminal and file your report with
'ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash' where _my_crash_report.crash is
the crash you would like to report. If you get an error that you aren't allowed
to access this report you will have to file it with 'sudo ubuntu-bug
/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash'.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

[Bug 826504] Re: System becomes extremely sluggish

2011-08-17 Thread Bryce Harrington
Oh yeah there are lots of tips and tricks for optimizing performance.
Some standard stuff to check:

* Any processes gobbling cpu, memory, or disk IO? (top, ps, nmon, atop, free
-m, nice/ionice, etc.)
* Got any unusual cron jobs set up?
* Is it swapping to disk? (top or vmstat should show this, or the %wa number
in top)
* Can you repro it in a guest session?
* Can you repro it on a Live CD?
* Any firmware updates for your motherboard?

dmesg is a good thing to check; especially keep an eye on that GPU lock
message. If you're able to correlate that to when the sluggishness
happens that would be quite interesting. If the message is there when
the system is working fine, that would reinforce my guess that the bugs
are separate.

Hardware's also a possibility. Switching to a SSD helped a ton with
performance just in general, and particularly with swapping. Increasing
ram can help in some situations. On laptops a failing power supply can
cause weird bugs (esp. if it's fine when on battery).

Good luck, let me know what you find.

[Bug 819495] Re: [Oneiric] indicator-session states 'updates available...’ which isn't the case

2011-08-17 Thread Taylor
I never use the graphical interfaces for updating; I use the command-
line 'sudo apt-get update' and 'sudo apt-get upgrade'. This never
updates the indicator-session status, so for me it always reads "Updates
Available...". However, if I click that, it pulls up the update manager
and tells me there are no updates, and then finally updates the
indicator.

Definite agree with #2.

Partially unrelated-- should the indicator turn blue, a la the messaging
menu, when there are updates available?

[Bug 746892] Re: Keyboard randomly stops working, but autorepeat and mouse work

2011-08-17 Thread Mats Ahlgren
SUCCESSFULLY DIAGNOSED, with WORKAROUND

Many thanks to Thomas Lübking for help diagnosing

This is due to an accessibility "feature" known as "slow keys"
*Somehow*, the feature gets randomly activated during normal use of the OS.
The normal user warning for this is a system bell (which may not be heard), so
it's easy to miss; there is no graphical indicator of any sort.
Normally though, this feature should not be activated in the first place.

FIX / WORKAROUND:
- open the System Settings > Accessibility (or type "kcmshell4 access" in a
terminal)
- under "[tab]Keyboard Filters" you may see Sticky Keys enabled if you are
suffering from this; disable it and hit Apply
- to prevent this from happening again, go to "[tab]Activation Gestures",
disable "Use gestures to activate...", set the inactivity timeout to the lowest
possible setting (1min), and enable all the notification features

suggested severity: Highest (because it makes people's system unusable
and they have no idea how to fix it)

how this should be fixed:
- source of random activation should be found and fixed
how this can be mitigated:
- kubuntu system settings should be set to those described in "FIX" to reduce
chances of occurring
- KDE code can be modified to show a prominent accessibility status indicator,
or require typing "confirm"

This is bug is suspected to be due to an Ubuntu configuration of either
the base system or KDE packages, though I am unsure what might affect
usability settings of all desktops.

(Maybe it's also possible that there exists some activation gesture
which will cause a popup to appear, but the user will hit Enter while
typing?)

go4linux's comment should also be investigated, because it may indicate
this problem is also occurring in other desktop environments; if so that
would help track down the cause of the random activations if it's the
same issue

[Bug 781402] Re: Ubuntu 11.04 / Unity freezing when screen is 'woken up'

2011-08-17 Thread kristian
@Bryce
I was about to look for another distro/version/desktop since this "bug" did
rendered unity to be big annoyance. so the hint of #12 did work for me and I
happy that this "bug report" is in place. looking at your link with reporting X
errors it took me quite some time to figure out that a "freeze" is a crash and
that the missing in you are referring gets described in
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Freeze

hope I will find time to provide this info.

thanx.

2011-08-17 Thread peddy
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 816762 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/816762

Public bug reported:

When pressing alt-F2, if I enter "firefox" for instance, "command not
found" is displayed. This happens to all executables, located in /bin as
well as /usr/bin. Entering just "r" still restarts the shell.

I suspect the PATH is not being taken into account.

If I use full pathnames, e.g. I type in "/usr/bin/firefox", the file is
opened in gedit.

I can also type in full names of directories and they are opened.

[Bug 447117] Re: Writer crashes when opening docx files

2011-08-17 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
fantasma, your crash report is missing. Please follow these instructions
to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with
by the automatic retracer.

[Bug 782005] Re: Cannot click Apply on "Existing Settings" screen of "Change Driver" wizard in printer properties

2011-08-17 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
Unfortunately I can't repro anymore. The Apply button is enabled if I
attempt to switch from the MFC-7220 driver back to the MFC7225, and if I
create a new printer with the 7225 driver the Apply button is also
enabled if I attempt to switch it to the MFC-7220 driver. :( Closing the
bug since it sounds like you wouldn't be able to effectively
investigate.

I'm pretty sure that when the problem happened I was using the BR-
Script3 driver or the other MFC7225 one labelled Foomatic/Postscript.

[Bug 746892] Re: Keyboard randomly stops working, but autorepeat and mouse work

2011-08-17 Thread go4linux
Same problem, slightly different situation.
I use gnome shell, but i had it also with unity, gnome classic and xfce (all of
them after installing gnome shell, however). kde hangs.
I didn't have the problem before upgrading to natty.
I also noticed that when the problem occurs tends to occur fairly early after
login, or it doesn't occur. Maybe a synchronization problem at login?
logout still seems to solve the problem

i have a dell precision m4500 with natty 64 bit

Man, writing with this keyboard sucks.

[Bug 749249] Re: flightgear version 1.9.1-1.1 failed to build on i386

2011-08-17 Thread Fabrice Coutadeur
Hi Julian,

I'd like to upload the fix to Ubuntu and sync back the package when the
final fix is applied to the simgear package, so If you are willing to
prepare a debdiff for the package in Ubuntu, I'll be happy to upload it.
If you're not, I'll take your patch (giving you the credit, obviously)
and create the corresponding revision of the package.

thanks!

[Bug 632696] Re: libvirt won't start a VM with serial or console when apparmor is enabled

2011-08-17 Thread Thomas Schweikle
The only real fix is not to use lxc/kvm on one hardware in parallel. As
long as you use *only* kvm/lxc you'll not see this error any more. This
is because most lxc-tools do not use libvirtd for operations.

At least with version 0.8.8-1ubuntu6.5 (available from the mainline
repositories) some other errors are fixed — this one is not.

[Bug 828476] Re: Default 6.0 theme incompatible with Firefox 6.0

2011-08-17 Thread Bill Baker
Also, if you notice in ExtensionSummary.txt there are two profiles. The
first one, default, has everything disabled and the Default 6.0 theme.
The second one, beta, has all the extensions enabled with the Default
4.0 theme. I started Firefox with the beta profile and it works fine.
So it appears that something may be wrong with the Default 6.0 theme.

[Bug 828494] [NEW] xorg driver fallback for arm is missing pvr for omap 4

2011-08-17 Thread Ricardo Salveti
Public bug reported:

The patch debian/patches/111_armel-drv-fallbacks.patch was created to be
able to load the arm related xorg drivers and use fbdev as a fallback.
This is needed at arm platforms as usually the drivers are platform
devices, without an easy way to identify if the platform contains or not
a supported hardware.

Currently this is lacking support for the pvr driver available at
Pandaboard, so the only way to make it use the proprietary driver is by
creating a xorg.file. As the change is quite simple, I'm making this as
a bug.

Fix should follow as a merge proposal.

the above comment saying that this is where the issue was discovered or
where it was supposedly fixed?

[Bug 828489] [NEW] Banshee randomly crashes while playing songs in Play Queue

2011-08-17 Thread Stephen Rees-Carter
Public bug reported:

Frequently when listening to music in my Play Queue Banshee will simply
crash/close without any sort of notice or message. It always happens at
the end of a song, but I can go back into it and play the two songs
again without it crashing (so it's not the songs which are triggering
it).

No "Banshee has crashed" messages appear, so I have no way to debug this
and I am unable to do it on demand.

Any clues of what I can do to help debug this would be great. This is
getting really annoying, as I can't sit down and listen to music without
it crashing occasionally.

[Bug 739374] Re: eglibc newer than 2.12.1 in natty results in alignment errors, SIGLILL and segfaults on tegra2 systems

2011-08-17 Thread Peter Maydell
For the record, the general consensus on the #ac100 irc channel seems to
be:

(1) if you have a mismatched kernel and eglibc, where the kernel has its
half of the Android erratum workaround enabled but the libc does not,
then you are going to get segfaults (purely as a result of the mismatch
and without requiring any kind of hardware bug to manifest itself) if
libc tries to do TLS by direct use of the cp15 register. Maverick eglibc
was OK because it always deferred to the kernel to do TLS. I believe
the segfault Michael reports in comment #7 is this "mismatched
libc/kernel" kind.

(2) if you did want to try to work around this bug in a way which didn't
require unpleasant and impractical things like "compile everything to
avoid the cp15 TLS register", the only approach we could think of was to
make eglibc always allocate TLS data such that the value to be stored in
the TLS register has bit 20 clear...

(3) ...however, if you have a stock eglibc and a kernel with the
erratum workaround disabled/removed, then things seem in practice to
work OK. Speculation is that perhaps the erratum is only a problem in
marginal situations (eg if the core is very hot).

So what we've ended up doing is disabling the kernel workaround and
crossing our fingers.

[Bug 424044] Re: [ooo-build] OOo Math Objects are resized without warning when saving to MS .doc format

2011-08-17 Thread Christopher M. Penalver

+ 3) What is expected to happen in LibreOffice Writer via the Terminal:
+

+ && lowriter -nologo example.odt
+
+ save to .doc and open the .doc it looks the same as the .odt.
+
+ 4) What happens instead is the embedded Math equation is resized. The
+ Math equation changes from:
+
  size 21{ Prod cSub { size 14{ ital "k="1} } cSup { size 14{N} } {p rSub {size
14 {k}
  }^{size 14 n_{size 10 k} } } }

- #this can be seen in attachment db-screenshot-1.png
+ in the .odt to:

- 3) Save the file as odt, open the file
+ size 12{ Prod cSub { size 8{ ital "k="1} } cSup { size 8{N} } {p rSub {
+ size 8{k} } rSup { size 8{n rSub {k} } } } } {}

- #this can be seen in attachment db-screenshot-2.png
-
- 4) Save the file as doc (Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP), open the file
-
- #this can be seen in attachment db-screenshot-3.png
-
- I can confirm that by saving to doc format the code has now changed to the
following line:
- size 12{ Prod cSub { size 8{ ital "k="1} } cSup { size 8{N} } {p rSub { size
8{k} } rSup { size 8{n rSub {k} } } } } {}
-
- The user is not notified of this resizing. My guess is that Microsoft
- format uses a different way of using math, and there is most an issue
- making a one to one conversion. I have been told that there are known
- issues with how picking the Microsoft document format translates math
- objects.
-
- Other than saving to the standard OpenOffice document format .odt, there
- is no way to prevent this resizing from happening.
+ in .doc.

[Bug 828105] Re: at-spi2-core not installed during upgrade from Natty

2011-08-17 Thread Martin Pitt
I think a likely reason is that at-spi2-core has a Conflicts: at-spi,
and during update it might not want to remove a package to satisfy a new
recommends? So I think we actually need a hard dependency in the meta
package here.

** Package changed: update-manager (Ubuntu Oneiric) => ubuntu-meta
(Ubuntu Oneiric)

** Changed in: ubuntu-meta (Ubuntu Oneiric)
   Status: New => Confirmed
