[Bug 540042] Re: Freeserif Arabic version is broken

2011-09-01 Thread Steve White
Hi,

Last night I committed a change to FreeFont CVS that might be toward
your problem #1.

See:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ttf-freefont/+bug/730770

I looked at your picture.
In order to use it, I really need the Unicode text by which it was generated.

By the way, FreeSans has no Arabic range. You are seeing glyphs stolen
from some other font in the picture.

As you must be aware, there are technical problems in merging Latin text with
Arabic.
Besides the weight of the letters, Arabic letters tend to go much farther above
and below the baseline
than Latin letters.
I am not personally satisfied with the Arabic range in FreeSerif in that
respect. I'm sure there's a solution,
but I lack the language and artistic skills to do anything about it personally.
I was in contact with somebody who did some work in this regard, but the effort
seems to have stalled.
(But of course, since I got no bug reports, I assumed that I was the only one
who notice the problems.)

As to the style of the Arabic range in itself, I can be no judge.
But if you don't like one font face, there is always another... That's the
beauty of it!

If you want to take this farther, please open a report on the FreeFont
site as I recommended.

Cheers!

[Bug 800840] Re: unable to install grub 2 on btrfs

2011-09-01 Thread Lilian A. Moraru
If you don't support root on btrfs yet than announce when we format the
drivers(as it was before, it was asking for ext3 even if ext4 was ok too when
we were choosing btrfs).
But it's strange cause you introduced GRUB2 which actually supports root on
btrfs.

[Bug 397636] Re: libgnutls13 rejects ldap server's self-signed certificate

2011-09-01 Thread Matthew Roy
You can also work around this by copying over the CA certificate you're
using (even if self-signed) and pointing to it with a line like
"TLS_CACERT /etc/ssl/certs/cacert.pem" into /etc/ldap/ldap.conf for
ldap-utils

Since 9.04(?) I've been using libnss-ldapd and libpam-ldapd, which also need
the cacert pointed out in /etc/nslcd.conf:
# SSL options
ssl on
tls_reqcert demand
tls_cacertfile /etc/ssl/certs/cacert.pem

[Bug 837490] Re: When multiple users are logged in, users can be switched without going to login screen

2011-09-01 Thread Doug McMahon
This also includes a guest user who can switch to any other logged in user, no
password needed (also can bypass a locked screen. Maybe this is intended,
doesn't seem to make much sense. (see similar in 11.04 except guest is
restricted.
If the "Switch from always goes to the login screen (password then
required), why is it allowed to just click on a user and go directly to their
login

[Bug 835971] Re: screen brightens when idle, rather than dimming

2011-09-01 Thread Alex Stevens
Exact same problem on an Asus Eee PC 1000HA.
I have used the function keys to dim the screen to its minimum, and it seems
the default "Dim on Idle" exhibits the exact characteristics that Chris
mentioned. Instead of dimming further (or to the same minimum level), it will
actually brighten to about a 25-30% setting.

It would be expected that the "Dim on Idle" dim in relation to the current
brightness level, rather than to a set level.
E.g.
min_level >= (0.25 * current_level) ? dim _level = min_level : dim_level = 0.25
* current_level;
Rather than...
dim_level = 0.25 * max_level;

[Bug 267913] Re: hda-intel: IRQ timing workaround is activated for card #0. Suggest a bigger bdl_pos_adj

2011-09-01 Thread DaneM
I should also note that I'm using Nvidia drivers 180.13 with a GeForce
9800 GTX, or GTX 560 Ti (when the latter is working--in process of RMA).
Some previous posters have mentioned a possible link to the video card
and its drivers.

I'm currently doing a badblocks on my Linux drive, but in Disk Utility,
there's something I thought I should mention, which I don't entirely
understand:

5. Reallocation Sector Count: Good - Normalized: 200; Worst: 200;
Threshold: 140; Value: 0 sectors.

Does this mean that no sectors currently in use are bad, but 200 have
been reallocated; or that the 200 number is some kind of setting for
when to worry, and there have been no such incidents? I don't know
whether this could relate to this bug, but if it does, it would be good
to know what I'm looking at.

Thanks, all, for your interest in this bug.

[Bug 839303] [NEW] tsconf is not Multi-Arch compatible

2011-09-01 Thread Patrick Horn
Public bug reported:

I ran into this bug when trying to install 32-bit directfb using
multiarch on amd64. The install fails to find a candidate because tsconf
is arch:all, not arch:i386.

For some reason libts-0.0-0:i386 seems to depend on tsconf:i386 which
makes nore sense. This package consists of one configuration file which
has jitter in touchscreens. It is classified as "arch:all" because there
is nothing here that depends on a particular architecture.

This makes libts uninstallable using multiarch, and by dependency, makes
libdirectfb (which is used by some video players and game engines)
uninstallable using multiarch.

[Bug 839304] [NEW] nvidia drivers, twinview and resume cause garbage on screen

2011-09-01 Thread Christian Theune
Public bug reported:

I just updated to oneiric and see a similar problem to #813343.

When either resuming or turning on two monitors with twinview (one works
fine) I get garbage.

When trying to enable twinview I can still see the mouse and with a bit
of luck get one monitor working again. Two doesn't.

Can't see any code inside python-mode doing that.
Could you send the output of M-x report-emacs-bug if this happens?

[Bug 761578] Re: handle reaching inotify max watches better

2011-09-01 Thread Szymon Danielczyk
Hi guys just to let you know
I've experienced problems with running "less" command because of inotify limit
which was
8192 on my machine
It was hard to diagnose as a message I got from "less" was very misleading
like
tail: cannot watch `catalina.out': No space left on device
there was plenty of space and the real reason was inotify watchers had been
eaten by ubuntuone ;-)
This can affect many users and a lot of others applications
i so dropbox is displaying a message to the user when inotify limit is reached
I think you should do the same to let the users know what is going on
to avoid unnecessary frustration and save their time

Thanks for making ubuntuone
Szymon

[Bug 836909] Re: Banshee crashes while loading

2011-09-01 Thread Sam Bayless
Some follow up.
First, I can work around this by launching banshee as root. This is less than
ideal, but it does work.

Secondly, this bug exists in both the unstable and daily builds in the
Banshee ppa's (ie, https://launchpad.net/~banshee-team/+archive/banshee-

[Bug 267913] Re: hda-intel: IRQ timing workaround is activated for card #0. Suggest a bigger bdl_pos_adj

2011-09-01 Thread DaneM
(Sorry for the wait...)

I can now confirm that the error message:

[ 31.958964] hda-intel: IRQ timing workaround is activated for card
#0. Suggest a bigger bdl_pos_adj.

is still appearing in my 'dmesg | grep hda-intel' output, as of this
moment. I'm not experiencing any further problems with massive IO wait,
regarding my hard drives, but the system is still a bit sluggish,
compared to my Windows 7 installation on the same PC (but on a different
drive). I intend to run another badblocks test on my Linux system drive
(500GB SATA) to make sure that it's not having problems, but last I
checked, it was fine.

[Bug 760131] Re: Power consumption raised significantly in natty

2011-09-01 Thread fejes
Even if that were so, when my laptop goes into battery mode, with all of
the aggressive power saving modes throttling the CPU, etc, it's
unacceptable for it to be running so hot. I wouldn't normally care if
it's plugged in and sucking up power, but when the power is supposed to
be scaled back, it shouldn't be taking up more power ( even at the cost
of decreased responsiveness.)

In any case, as of yesterday, after a kernel update, my laptop is now
consuming 14-17W of power when on battery, as opposed to the 19-25W it
was taking last week. While not as good as the 11-14W range I had going
with Maverick, it's an improvement. I don't recall seeing anything in
the kernel changelog that would indicate a change to the power
consumption, but I'm not a kernel expert. In any case, I have not
altered any of my power saving optimizations between the two tests, and
I had used the force acpi trick much earlier on.

If it stays this way for now, that's not a bad sign.

[Bug 839280] [NEW] transmission slow to start

2011-09-01 Thread Gabriel Diosan
Public bug reported:

Transmission 2.33-0Ubuntu2 takes quite some time to start when first
launched. The current transmission (version 2.13) in Ubuntu 11.04 starts
much faster.

No crash report is generated and starting Transmission the second time
is faster. I'm not sure whether the new version of Transmission is doing
something in the background that the current version is not or whether
it indeed is a bug.

ProblemType: Bug

[Bug 839281] [NEW] Double brightness events after logging in.

2011-09-01 Thread Mark Smith
Public bug reported:

output of lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu oneiric (development branch)
Release:11.10

Package:
gnome-settings-daemon:
  Installed: 3.1.90-0ubuntu1
  Candidate: 3.1.90-0ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 3.1.90-0ubuntu1 0
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ oneiric/main amd64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Expected result: At the login screen, brightness keys increase and
decrease brightness by one step. After logging in, brightness keys
continue to increase and decrease brightness by one step.

Actual result: At the login screen, brightness keys increase and
decrease brightness by one step (same as expected, OK.) After logging
in, brightness increases and decreases by two steps whenever a
brightness key is pressed.

This specifically seems to apply to the POWER plugin for gnome-settings-daemon.
setting "active" to false via
"gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power active false" returns
the behavior to normal, but removes the gnome power indicator. However, since
the battery indicator is present at the login screen, there must be a second
application, hotkey, etc, trying to change brightness.

[Bug 838540] Re: 'Search for packages containing this document.' feature does not work

2011-09-01 Thread Jeremy Bicha
To clarify, the message in the original bug report is if PackageKit was
installed. Otherwise, the error message is "You do not have PackageKit.
Package install links require PackageKit."

Since Ubuntu's PackageKit doesn't support the
org.freedesktop.PackageKit.Modify.InstallProvideFiles method and since
Ubuntu doesn't use PackageKit, this feature should be disabled or ported
to work with aptdaemon or whatever also.

[Bug 834358] Re: Changing provider on search bar in Firefox causes 404 Error on Ubuntu default homepage

2011-09-01 Thread Kyle Kalstabakken
I believe the problem is in aboutStartpage.js

I'm not sure what the intended functionality is here, but I feel like
the start page should be using the default search provider instead of
the one currently selected in the search bar. If this is true, I believe
it would be fixed by replacing nsIBrowserSearchService.currentengine
with nsIBrowserSearchService.defaultengine

To prevent the 404 errors, a switch statement around the uri definition
would allow access to the pages we know are available at
start.ubuntu.com, and the default would just be Google...

I'll make a patch sometime when I get around to figuring out how that
works here.
