[Bug 858475] Re: after first standy, HP 6735b doesn't boot if not plugged in

2011-09-24 Thread LostinSpacetime
I believe apport-collect doesn't do anything if I don't have a package
selected, so I'm going to select linux-generic which is quite
appropriate I think.

** Package changed: ubuntu => linux-meta (Ubuntu)

** Tags added: apport-collected oneiric

** Description changed:

- The laptop boots properly until I put it once on standby. It also boots
- if it's plugged in, but when it's running on battery, it stops booting
- having a problem with the hd I believe. If I add ACPI=off to grub
- configuration, it also boots but with the obvious disadvantages. I will
- try to do some more debugging.

[Bug 858122] Re: incomplete migration to /run

2011-09-24 Thread Tom Chiverton
If you've tried to do it safely at shutdown, and it didn't work, I think
it's OK to try less safely early in the boot process, then reboot once
it's done. Certainly I did this by hand, and no ill effects occurred.

[Bug 781385] Re: Ubiquity GTK should have useful accessible names set in the Glade .ui files instead of using the variable names

2011-09-24 Thread Alan Bell
Can we stop doing this now or do automated tests need to run up to
release? I would like to have the opportunity to test the installer with
the correct sound output so we can document it prior to release, there
is no point doing videos of the install process if it is reading out the
variable names rather than the text it should say because that would be
misleading. I would point out that the only way the LDTP tests work at
all is by leveraging the work that has been put into accessibility, so
breaking accessibility just to make the testing easier is a bit harsh.
Could the tests not use the regular accessible names to find widgets?

[Bug 805947] Re: SRU: hand-picked packaging fixes for Lucid, Maverick, and Natty

2011-09-24 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
PPD updating was introduced in CUPS 1.5.0-3 as a standard feature.

I've added the manual code to Natty to cover for updates from previous
releases, which had a different PPD.

Releases older than that don't need any PPD updating since the've had
the same one forever.

The problem is, that after the booting process, the /dev/sda exists but
not the /dev/sdaX. So no partition can be mounted because the devices
don't exist.

[Bug 857053] Re: Unity launcher does not show up

The reset command seems pretty heavy...

somehow it does not work, but somehow this is strange...

since two days no update but wine has come. unity-launcher does show up
sporadically, but it seems i can't exactly tell the matter why it hides
or not. At the moment it works like expected, though no update has been
made.

i'll go and try unity --reset next time it does not respond.

[Bug 858493] Re: By default ntpd listens on all interfaces

It seems "interface ignore wildcard" doesn't actually work as ntpd needs
those listening interfaces to get packets back. openntpd seems to do
without these though so it would be good if ntpd was also able to.

[Bug 805947] Re: SRU: hand-picked packaging fixes for Lucid, Maverick, and Natty

2011-09-24 Thread Till Kamppeter
The queue creation and removal in your debdiff for Lucid and Maverick is
OK. No I do not remember when exactly I introduced the automatic PPD
updating (look into the debian/changelog of packages like hplip or
foomatic-db). In distributions which have this functionality, cups-pdf
should offer it, too. Simply use the same code in postinst as you are
using in Natty.

[Bug 858493] [NEW] By default ntpd listens on all interfaces

2011-09-24 Thread Pedro Côrte-Real
Public bug reported:

The default ntp configuration that ships with ubuntu has ntp listening
on all interfaces when in most instances that's not needed. Adding the
line:

interface ignore wildcard

to ntp.conf disables this and makes ntp only listen to localhost, which
is enough for things like ntpq to still work. It would probably be even
safer for it not to listen on any interfaces but that doesn't seem to be
possible as "interface ignore all" seems to be completely ignored and
"interface ignore lo" only disables localhost on ipv6. It seems
listening to localhost on ipv4 is hardcoded into ntpd.

[Bug 805947] Re: SRU: hand-picked packaging fixes for Lucid, Maverick, and Natty

2011-09-24 Thread Till Kamppeter
For me the PDF printer of cups-pdf works in Natty. It gets correctly set
up with A4 as default when installing and correctly removed when
uninstalling the package, the PPD is also correct (so it updated when I
got the package with my updates). Everything perfect.

[Bug 858122] Re: incomplete migration to /run

2011-09-24 Thread Steve Langasek
> If you are relying on a one-time script at shutdown to do the migration,
> maybe you need to verify it worked OK and re-run it ASAP in the boot process
> too.

Unfortunately, the shutdown script itself explains why this is not
possible:

# These must be turned into symlinks for the /run transition. We
# can't do this at boot time because / is remounted read-write too
# late, so do it on shutdown instead.

There is no point in the boot sequence when / is writable that we are
guaranteed to be able to replace /var/run with a symlink safely, because
/run is mounted *before* / is writable and this causes other processes
to start up that may be creating sockets in /var/run.

So we really, really need to figure out why this script isn't working
for you at shutdown. Unfortunately this is difficult to do since there
are certainly no logs from this point in the shutdown sequence, and the
problem has not been widely reproducible.

Could you attach a copy of your full /etc/fstab from this system? Maybe
something will jump out...

Focus problem like this happen with many applications for me. I have
example pidgin in corner and in front then click desktop and no response
until I manually alt-tab to show desktop. Same can happen with firefox
where firefox appear in front but actually I click on desktop that is
not visible. Change on focus by clicking with mouse seems not to work at
all.

[Bug 787802] Re: Update Manager hangs waiting for response to apt-listchanges hidden under Details

2011-09-24 Thread Adam Conrad
update-manager used to invoke the GTK frontend of apt-listchanges (which
seemed like a sane behaviour to me) before it started doing this pager-
in-the-terminal-widget thing. Is there a reason why this was changed at
all?

[Bug 858480] [NEW] Opening vlc with non-existing file causes Xorg to use massive amounts of memory

2011-09-24 Thread pablomme
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce (this is on up-to-date oneiric):
- Install http://apt.ubuntu.com/p/vlc
- Open gnome-terminal
- Type "vlc i-do-not-exist.avi" (where "i-do-not-exist.avi" should indeed not
exist)

The system will become completely unresponsive in seconds. Switching to
a VT (which will take a while with all the swapping) and running "top"
(and press '>' to sort by memory usage) will show that Xorg is using (in
my case) 3+ GiB of memory. Issuing "killall vlc" and switching back to
VT 7 will make the system responsive again after a little while, and
Xorg will return to more normal memory usage levels.

I think that Xorg's ability to stop using the extra memory implies that
this is not a memory leak in Xorg, but that vlc is indeed requesting
Xorg to allocate all that memory.

In case it helps, the output from vlc in gnome-terminal is:

$ vlc i-do-not-exist.avi

[Bug 857375] Re: unity launcher does not display after login

2011-09-24 Thread Jared
One more note. I am using a Toshiba NB 305 netbook with a 1024 x 600
(16:9) resolution display and have a Xerox 19" LCD VGA with a external
monitor with a resolution of 1280 x 1024 (5:4) attached which I am using
as my primary monitor. I have the netbook display disabled. When I get
to the login screen the login only fills the to right quarter of the
Xerox Monitor leaving the rest of the screen blank. After logging in,
the display shows the full background tiled in four tiles before the
full single background is displayed and unity comes up fully.

[Bug 857903] Re: package cups 1.5.0-7 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1 at login

2011-09-24 Thread Bartosz Marek
The same for me. I installed via dpkg --install --force-all
cups_1.5.0-7_amd64.deb
and it seems that upstart can't start cups daemon. I run cups via cups -F
command
and cups work properly, and detect my printer. I can print.
My work-around is:
Uninstal cups
unpack package
move by hand files from CONTENTS to proper dirs
remove original /etc/init.d/cups (link to upstart-job)
writing traditional init script and put it into /etc/init.d

2011-09-24 Thread Jared
I ran Update to make sure my system was up to date. I rebooted my machine and

It was so I opened a terminal and ran unity --reset as you requested. Unity
reset and the launcher was shown. However; it had changed from `auto hide` to
`dodge window` I rebooted again to see if the bug would reoccur. The launcher
correctly opened and operated with the `dodge window` setting. I changed the
launcher setting to `auto hide` and rebooted again and the launcher behaved
correctly. I will keep an eye on it to see if it occurs again.

When I ran the unity --reset command in the terminal several errors were
reported. I pasted them into a text file and will attach it to this bug
report. After running the unity --reset command in the terminal; the
terminal never returned to the command prompt. Is this expected?

[Bug 858459] Re: lock up on boot when network cable is unplugged

2011-09-24 Thread Brad Figg
Thank you for taking the time to file a bug report on this issue.

However, given the number of bugs that the Kernel Team receives during
any development cycle it is impossible for us to review them all.
Therefore, we occasionally resort to using automated bots to request
further testing. This is such a request.

We have noted that there is a newer version of the development kernel
than the one you last tested when this issue was found. Please test
again with the newer kernel and indicate in the bug if this issue still
exists or not.

If the bug still exists, change the bug status from Incomplete to
Confirmed. If the bug no longer exists, change the bug status from
Incomplete to Fix Released.

Thank you for your help, we really do appreciate it.

[Bug 858466] [NEW] Ubuntu 11.10 Audio Problems with Browsers.

2011-09-24 Thread Michel Steinbusch
Public bug reported:

all browsers dont have sound, applications do have sound, while testing OpenShot
Video Editor i found out that also there videos that i created dont have
sound. so here the Answers:

(1) Do you get sound in other applications, or do you have no sound at
all on your Oneiric system?

Only browsers and OpenShot Video editor have no sound on output.

(2) Are you using Firefox, or some other browser?

Firefox and Chromium

(3) Does the problem occur in another web browser? (If you are using
Firefox, you could try Chromium, which you can get by installing the
package called chromium-browser in the Software Center.)

All other browsers.

(4) Does the problem occur in another user account? If you only have one
user account, you can create a second one for testing purposes.

Both user accounts

(5) What is the output of this command, run in the Terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T
to open a Terminal window, then copy the command from your web browser,
paste it into the Terminal, press enter to run it, then do Edit > Select
All to select all the text in the Terminal, do Edit > Copy to copy it
all to the clipboard, then paste it into your post here):
