[Bug 868812] Re: getaddrinfo() returns AF_INET6 record when it probably shouldn't

2011-10-05 Thread Barry Warsaw
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected natty

** Description changed:

  Okay, here's another weird issue with Natty kernel on armel. I'm not
  sure it's a bug but after consultation with stgraber, I decided to
  report it anyway.

  getaddrinfo() is returning an addrinfo result with ai_family == AF_INET6
  even though ipv6 is not enabled.

  @hope[~:195]% ip -6 addr show
  @hope[~:196]%

  However, getaddrinfo returns an AF_INET6 result (as shown with Python's
  socket module):

  Python 2.7.1+ (r271:86832, Apr 11 2011, 21:23:38)
  [GCC 4.5.2] on linux2
  Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information.
  >>> from socket import *
  >>> for res in getaddrinfo('localhost', 1234, 0, SOCK_STREAM): print res
  ...
  (2, 1, 6, '', ('127.0.0.1', 1234))
  (10, 1, 6, '', ('::1', 1234, 0, 0))
  >>>

  What's weird about this is that if you comment out all the ipv6 entries
  in /etc/host, (including especially ::1 localhost6) then you do not get
  the AF_INET6 entry. What makes this weird is that the linux3 kernel on
  amd64 does not exhibit this behavior. Specifically, with the localhost6
  entry still enabled in /etc/hosts, and `ip -6 addr show` still returning
  nothing, you only get the AF_INET results.

[Bug 760131] Re: Power consumption raised significantly in natty

2011-10-05 Thread mejo
Unfortunately kernel 2.6.38-12.51 doesn't improve the situation that
much for me either. Maybe a bit, but I'm not sure about that. I was
surprised to find out that even pcie_aspm=force and i915_enable_rc6=1
don't improve power consumption anymore. Some months back
pcie_aspm=force still improved the situation for me.

My system is a ThinkPad T420 with Sandy Bridge i5, integrated i915 video
controller and running up-to-date Ubuntu Natty.

I compared the output of powertop with kernel 2.6.38-11.50 and with
kernel 2.6.38-12.51, both with and without the boot options, and with
and without firefox running. See my exact results attached.

[Bug 868812] [NEW] getaddrinfo() returns AF_INET6 record when it probably shouldn't

Public bug reported:

Okay, here's another weird issue with Natty kernel on armel. I'm not

getaddrinfo() is returning an addrinfo result with ai_family == AF_INET6
even though ipv6 is not enabled.

@hope[~:195]% ip -6 addr show

However, getaddrinfo returns an AF_INET6 result (as shown with Python's
socket module):

[GCC 4.5.2] on linux2
Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information.
>>> from socket import *
>>> for res in getaddrinfo('localhost', 1234, 0, SOCK_STREAM): print res
...
(2, 1, 6, '', ('127.0.0.1', 1234))
(10, 1, 6, '', ('::1', 1234, 0, 0))

What's weird about this is that if you comment out all the ipv6 entries

amd64 does not exhibit this behavior. Specifically, with the localhost6

** Description changed:

  Running the Python development branch (3.3) test suite on Natty for ARM
  (i.MX53 QSB) results in two test_socket failures. I'll report those
  separately, but during the run of test_socket, I see the following
  message on the console:

  TIPC module is not loaded, please 'sudo modprobe tipc'

  However, you cannot modprobe tipc:

[Bug 802626] Re: boot hangs at initrd

2011-10-05 Thread Steve Langasek
Eduard, thank you very much for your detailed analysis of this issue!
It appears that this may be the same problem as bug #818177 which we're
working on fixing for Ubuntu 11.10.

> Also adding udev to the bug. Please set to invalid if e.g. lvm is required to
> wait for
> the logical volume setup to finish in initrd.img/scripts/init-premount/lvm2.

A wait there is insufficient because another vgchange may be issued
*after* that script ends. We need to make sure that when udev
terminates, it doesn't leave vgchange hanging.

[Bug 818177] Re: boot failures caused by udev race

2011-10-05 Thread Steve Langasek
Looking at bugs on lvm2 turns up this gem in bug #802626:

> Just a wild speculation, because I haven't yet digged into the interactions
> between kernel
> and udevd, but the semaphore decrementation event might be lost when
> transitioning from
> the initrd-udevd to the rootfs-udevd.

In cases where people are seeing initrd problems and lvm is in use, are
there always LVM VGs *other* than for the root fs? If there's a VG
that's not a dependency of the rootfs, then indeed the vgchange call can
be racing the main initramfs sequence.

Twiddling the lvm2 package to insert a delay may help with reproducing
the issue.

None of this explains any issues with device nodes being absent from
/dev on the root filesystem when lvm is *not* in use. The original bug
report did not mention LVM at all. Can someone comment on the disk
configuration used there? Maybe we need to split this into two bugs.

[Bug 868354] Re: duplicate indicators bar

2011-10-05 Thread Treviño
I guess that this is not only related to unity but this seems to affect
other parts too..

However, is it just me (I'm testing this on VirtualBox, so maybe this is not so
accurate) or also nautilus desktop is duplicated?
See the attached screenshot.

The indicators seems to be there just because they "think" to be on the
other screen. And what is shown in your smaller screen?

[Bug 868684] Re: Xorg freeze

2011-10-05 Thread Bryce Harrington
There is no evidence in the logs that there was a GPU lockup event (the
prototypical X freeze with -intel graphics). Just the vblank counter
failure errors in the log. I assume those messages correspond to when
the system became unresponsive?

You indicated this happens multiple times per day under certain
circumstances. Do you know a specific activity that tends to trigger it
more often than others?

Looking at your dpkg.log file, it doesn't look like any X packages
upgraded recently, but perhaps some other package changed and is
triggering it. Most of the packages appear to have received only minor
version bumps, but I see unity moved from 4.20 to 4.22. Are you able to
reproduce this bug with unity-2d (or gnome classic desktop)? If not,
you might try seeing if downgrading to an earlier unity version also
prevents the issue (apt-get install unity=4.20.0-0ubuntu2 perhaps)

Other than that, do you happen to know which day you first noticed these
lockups? That would help narrow down what package might be at fault.

[Bug 868788] [NEW] telinit fails to switch runlevels

2011-10-05 Thread komputes
Public bug reported:

telinit fails to switch between runlevels.

1 - From the desktop, running 'telinit 1' brings me to a black screen telling
me that pulse and bluetooth are shutting down, but then freezes there.
Expected single user mode (i.e. friendly-recovery menu) or at least a root
prompt.

2 - From recovery mode, if I drop to the root shell and run 'telinit 2' I get
placed into the TTY with the root prompt and a text user login prompt competing
for input.
Expected LightDM to start.

[Bug 590108] Re: User get wrong system language after executing oem-config, if he is a foreigner in the country he selected in timezone select stage

2011-10-05 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package localechooser - 2.37ubuntu2

---
localechooser (2.37ubuntu2) oneiric; urgency=low

  * For cases where selecting a different location may imply a different
dialect of the language, i.e. Portuguese and Chinese, take care to set
LANG to something reflecting the location and
LANGUAGE/LC_MESSAGES/LC_CTYPE/LC_COLLATE to something reflecting the
language (LP: #590108). This roughly matches the behaviour of
language-selector.
