[Bug 878294] Re: external USB disk freezes PC when unmounted

2011-11-02 Thread aimwin
I update every thing, enable preleased and unupdate in Software Souce /
update

and update everything,

initrd.img-3.0.0-13-generic

was installed and it is fixed,
Nividia is runing ok too.
But i had 2 unsuccesful boots. the mouse freeze and another time everything
freeze,
but other times here give report.

Now I cannot boot into initrd.img-3.0.0-12-generic original nor the above
initrd.img-3.0.6-generic.
They all freeze at black purple screen, only initrd.img-3.0.0-13-generic seem
to give me a chance to go on to normal Ubuntu.

I will do new clean reinstall and update and will report back when I got
time to night.

[Bug 318325] Re: [X1100] flickering after resume from ram

2011-11-02 Thread Chris
NB: With Debian Squeeze, I was able to cure this flicker on my Aspire
5100 by doing the following (as root):

pm-suspend --quirk-s3-bios --quirk-s3-mode --quirk-vbe-post --quirk-
vbemode-restore --quirk-vbestate-restore --quirk-test --store-quirks-
as-lkw

The parameters up to --quirk-test cause the machine to suspend. When I
tap a keyboard key it comes back to the deskop without the flickering.

The --store-quirks-as-lkw parameter seems to cause the previous
parameters to be written to a database where they are found and used
again on the next suspend attempt. So now my machine suspends and
resumes normally (the above commandline was needed only once).

Note that you can use the pm-suspend command to experiment with quirks.
The --quirk-test parameter was needed to make sure the pm scripts didn't
ignore the other parameters during testing.

For testing quirks, I found it useful to edit the power-management
settings to make the machine hibernate when I pushed the power button.
That made it possible to recover when the screen flickered too badly to
use the normal shutdown dialog. When the machine resumed from
hibernation, the flicker was gone and Iwas ready to test another
combination of suspend quirks.

Note that I have done a couple of other thngs which I don't think matter
(they didn't cure the problem by themselves). These are adding the
nomodeset parameter to the linux commandline, and adding some of the
same quirks to the file /usr/share/hal/fdi/information/10freedesktop/20
-video-quirk-pm-acer.fdi.

The current Debian Squeeze appears to be pretty similar to Ubuntu Lucid.
It's running Linux 2.6.32-5-686 (but with an October 2011 compile date).
I'm not sure how the two systems differ in their power management, but I
bet they're pretty close. I do not know if the tweaks I describe here
would work for Natty or Onieric.

I hope this helps somebody.

I have the same problem on an HP G61 laptop, with ubuntu 11.10 64-bit

un-suspending on battery, only to face a forced shutdown. As a result I
have to reboot to continue. It is a bug of great importance for the
usability of the unsuspend on battery.

[Bug 882274] Re: Community engagement is broken

2011-11-02 Thread TitanKing
I think the community is too hard on Shuttleworth and his team (maybe
even selfish), they are truly trying to achieve a vision here, lets
honor this. I honor what they have done for Linux and open source thus
far. I mean I use Launchpad for my own open source projects exclusively
and I understand allot about making decisions. Sometimes you have a
vision and to keep that enthusiastic flame burning, at times you have to
do something exciting with your own creation, in the end it benefits
everyone if it succeeds. Let Canonical push through their vision, if
Unity makes it to the Desktop of millions it will benefit us enormously.

I like to think of myself as a Linux power user, Ubuntu is much more
than the desktop environment, don't forget the excellent backbone it
runs on. Although Unity does not fit my needs, I moved over to Xfce, and
I fell in love with it. I honestly think there is nothing to complain
about. If you don't like Unity and call yourself a power user, its time
to more on and let them do their work, as a power user you should
realize that there are beautiful alternatives.

Mark, please don't think the community is unappreciative of what you
have done so far, they are just worried that their favorite Open Source
tool might be falling apart, while the exact opposite is happening. I
think you might want to market Xubuntu for power users more as it
grossly underestimated, the solution is there, people just need to
realize the alternative is great!

[Bug 857627] Re: Unity Switcher highlight does not stand out enough

2011-11-02 Thread Matt Giuca
I would recommend adding a different colour highlight border around the
edge of the active one, and removing the colour border around all of the
other ones, so the only one with a colour border is the active one. It's
hard to tell from the attached screenshot, but for example Firefox will
have a dark orange background and bright orange border.

Change it so the current active one has some colour border (perhaps
light orange to go with the brown background), and all the other icons
have no border (so Firefox will still have a dark orange background but
no orange border).

[Bug 885565] [NEW] Unnecessary and unappreciated swapping slow down my system

2011-11-02 Thread Bill Lee
Public bug reported:

After I upgrade my laptop from Ubuntu 11.04 to 11.10, it became
extremely slow. With physical memory of 1GB, it starting swapping when
free - buffers/cached > 400MB, which i thanked is to blame. It means
when I launch a web browser and an e-mail client, it starts swapping.
After several hours' running, the data swapped out will reach 300MB+ and
meanwhile free - buffers/cached is only 400MB. When I was using Ubuntu
11.04 before, swapping would never start unless free - buffers/cached >
800MB. Now I can only disable swapping to make my system usable, but the
temporary solution will make my system unstable.

[Bug 885562] [NEW] Indent with spaces cannot be activated for a project

2011-11-02 Thread Sebastian Klus
Public bug reported:

Try the following steps to reproduce:
1) Go to the project settings and check "Use spaces instead of tabs for indent"
(I have got the german version installed, so the translation might not match
the exact description)
2) Leave the settings box with ok.
3) Try indenting - it will work, but still with tabs
4) Go back to the project settings. You will notice that "Use spaces instead of
tabs" is UNchecked.

[Bug 884911] Re: Missing dependency in lubuntu-desktop to foo2zjs (Printer drivers)

2011-11-02 Thread Jonathan Marsden
Probably desktop-commmon was accidentally omitted; Lubuntu is a very new
official flavour of Ubuntu. Lubuntu 11.10 is the first release of
Lubuntu using seeds to generate the ISO images. Julien would know for
sure, but is currently at (or returning from) UDS, I think. We'll have
to look at what else that seed file would bring in with it that is not
currently included in Lubuntu. Hopefully not much :)

foo2zjs appears to require dc and mscompress, so a total of about 1.5MB
of archives, 4.5MB installed disk space. If that's all it takes, then
it looks to me like we should probably add desktop-common to the seed
file for Lubuntu 12.04.

[Bug 885559] [NEW] unity session crashed when browsing pictures in pendrive with Image Viewer

2011-11-02 Thread Santiago Roland
Public bug reported:

plugged a pendrive and went through nautilus to folder where are JPEG
and AVI files taken with a PentaxOptio 12MP. Double clicked in photo and
opened with Image Viewer. started to browse pictures with "next" arrow
button, and suddenly the whole session crashed and lightDM prompts
again. Start session again and did the same steps... suddenly the
session crashed. I suspect that the crash was when the Image Viewer
reaches an AVI file, but i can't tell. Maybe ther eis something in the
logs attached.

[Bug 848147] Re: Sync workrave 1.9.4-2 (universe) from Debian testing (main)

2011-11-02 Thread Micah Gersten
** Description changed:

+ Please see bug 877074.for oneiric information.
+ -
Please sync workrave 1.9.4-2 (universe) from Debian unstable (main)

  Explanation of FeatureFreeze exception:

This package was apparently dropped since it built against the old
gnome-panel. Debian now builds workrave without gnome-applet support so
this is no longer an issue. Workrave has a 4.5 star rating by 12 people
in Software Center so it would be nice to get it back.

Changelog since 1.9.3-2 (current Ubuntu version):

  workrave (1.9.4-2) unstable; urgency=low

     * Stop building GNOME application and applet (closes: #638100,
  #614038)

     * Bump Standards-Version to 3.9.2
     * Add empty build-arch and build-indep target in debian/rules (lintian)

  workrave (1.9.4-1) unstable; urgency=low

    * New upstream release
  - drop all Debian patches (applied upstream)

    * Update location of .xpm menu icon
    * Remove empty /usr/include directory after building
    * Remove obsolete breaks/replaces from debian/control

[Bug 878919] Re: regular kernel panic on Ubuntu 11.10

2011-11-02 Thread ddave01
I have just upgraded four netbooks to 11.10. Two Wind (Medion E1210) and
two EEEpc.

One Wind netbook goes into panic when on battery and I believe it is
related to wireless adapter.

The wireless connection has at times difficulty connecting. Timing out
but eventually connects.

The second Wind netbook has not had a panic but it has no battery and
runs on mains only.

The Asus EEEpc whilst on battery just now went into panic and attached
is photo of the screen.

[Bug 885555] [NEW] Apper does not display as installed all installed packages

2011-11-02 Thread Robert Simmons
Public bug reported:

I noticed that not all packages installed on my system are displayed as
being installed in Apper (green check mark next to the package name in
the leftmost column).

Specifically, I installed postgresql-9.1 using the package of the same
name listed in Apper. There is a dependency of postgresql-client-9.1
and it is installed when you install the main package. However, in the
list of packages in Apper there is no checkbox next to its name showing
that it is installed.

I have taken a screen capture of Apper showing that postgresql-9.1 is
installed, and I have selected its dependencies which shows that the
package postgresql-client-9.1 is installed because it has a green check
next to its name, but at the same time there is no check whatsoever in
the main list of packages above. I made the window large enough so that
you may see all three places at the same time to make the bug obvious.

sorry to ask but how would this work for fullscreen dash?

would this be some kind of "override" for the home-lens?

[Bug 318325] Re: [X1100] flickering after resume from ram

2011-11-02 Thread Chris
Hi Marco,

I tried your suggestion (adding nomodeset to the commandline) with
Debian Squeeze, but it didn't cure the flicker on resume.

Also tried it with an Onieric LiveCD, but it didn't solve it there
either.

Bad news...

[Bug 882274] Re: Community engagement is broken

2011-11-02 Thread Paul Bailey
I'm pretty sure the community communication channels and processes have
not changed drastically since this "bug" has started to show its face.
So there are only two possible explanations for the user
dissatisfaction:

1. This "bug" has been here for a long time and it just hasn't been noticed
until now.
2. Unity is piece of crap right now and is frustrating the heck out of
everyday Ubuntu users who don't think they are being heard because their bugs
and ideas are not being dealt with.

I tend to believe #2, but if you do believe #1 you still probably agree
that Unity is the factor that has awakened all this higher than normal
user communication. So at the end of the day, it's not a community
engagement issue because if Unity is "fixed" 95% of us would go back to
our ignorant Ubuntu bliss.

Ubuntu is having its Windows Vista moment right now, but I believe Unity
is a solid foundation that just needs some work. I think two things
need to be done.

1. Fix a bunch of bugs. Hopefully, this is the focus already since 12.04 is
LTS.
2. Compromise on some configuration options for Unity.

Ubuntu is a community of power users right now and giving us a few more
options to tweak our experience would go a long way to make the
community feel better. A place to vote on which options to include
would be ideal. Perhaps at http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/unity/

I think if a compromise was reached to include the top community defined
configuration options, the community would feel
vindicated.

I have since noted setting "When I delete a message" to "Just mark it
as deleted", it seems archiving works. However, this seems to be a
workaround to me. Regardless, setting an alternate destination folder
for deleted items should always work.

[Bug 885554] [NEW] mysql-server-5.1 Unpacking Halts 11.04-11.10 Server Upgrade

2011-11-02 Thread Ron Adams
Public bug reported:

During do-release-upgrade, the following output occurs:

Preparing to replace mysql-server 5.1.54-1ubuntu4 (using
.../mysql-server_5.1.58-1ubuntu1_all.deb) ...
Unpacking replacement mysql-server ...
Preparing to replace mysql-client-core-5.1 5.1.54-1ubuntu4 (using
.../mysql-client-core-5.1_5.1.58-1ubuntu1_amd64.deb) ...
Unpacking replacement mysql-client-core-5.1 ...
Preparing to replace mysql-client-5.1 5.1.54-1ubuntu4 (using
.../mysql-client-5.1_5.1.58-1ubuntu1_amd64.deb) ...
Unpacking replacement mysql-client-5.1 ...
Preparing to replace psmisc 22.13-1 (using .../psmisc_22.14-1_amd64.deb) ...
Unpacking replacement psmisc ...
Preparing to replace mysql-server-5.1 5.1.54-1ubuntu4 (using
.../mysql-server-5.1_5.1.58-1ubuntu1_amd64.deb) ...

The upgrade halts there indefinitely. I issued a service mysql stop and
then output continued:

mysql stop/post-start, (post-start) process 19685
Unpacking replacement mysql-server-5.1 ...
Preparing to replace mysql-server-core-5.1 5.1.54-1ubuntu4 (using
.../mysql-server-core-5.1_5.1.58-1ubuntu1_amd64.deb) ...
Unpacking replacement mysql-server-core-5.1 ...

The rest of the upgrade seems to be passing without incident. Can
someone confirm this bug? It seems odd that mysql would have a problem
stopping itself to allow the upgrade, but that is apparently the case.
It is worth nothing this appears to not be a new issue. See:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1484934

[Bug 885553] [NEW] Attack mode not offered in advanced game.

2011-11-02 Thread Scottar Brooke
Public bug reported:

I am playing the game board of Checkered. I chose the Atlantians
against the moderate Barbarians. I pushed with the small guard structure
deep into the territory. I meet the Barbarians somewhere in the middle.
All the while I am building up structure of farms, mining, smeltering,
and making wares.

i never attacked initially but the Barbarians would retreet on my
advances. I pushed them into the NE corner and they stopped retreating.
The option of attack could not be invoked as when i tried the game with
aggressive Barbarians mode. this is my first game play and I'm
confounded by this.

[Bug 885027] Re: SUID Mount Helper has 5 Major Vulnerabilities

2011-11-02 Thread Jason A. Donenfeld
There's still a symlink race condition. If at first the symlink points
to /dev/something-legit or /media/something-legit, the symlink can be
swapped easily by hooking into inotify's IN_ACCESS and changing what it
points to just in time for mount to be called with the s ymlink pointing
someplace naughty. An example of the technique is presented here:
http://www.exploit-db.com/exploits/17932/ .

So, the vulnerability still stands.

[Bug 881779] Re: Dell Studio 15 Display Corruption After Resume

2011-11-02 Thread Joshua Rubin
I think that I have found that this issue is related to using a 2nd
monitor.

Sequence 1 (I am not sure if this causes the display corruption), but
its related to sequence 2:

1. 2nd monitor is not detected when plugged into hdmi (its own issue)
2. I click the "gear" in the top right, then "Displays"
3. The monitors "flicker" but the 2nd one is detected. Unity almost always
crashes here (another issue)
4. Both displays work properly

Sequence 2 (I think this causes the corruption)

1. 2nd monitor is already working, either from sequence 1, or because I booted
with it connected.
2. I unplug the hdmi monitor.
3. I click the "gear" in the top right, then "Displays"
4. The monitors "flicker" and the hdmi monitor is de-registered
5. If I suspend the system here, when I resume I will almost certainly (maybe
100% certainly, just not convinced yet) have to fix the display corruption bug
reported here. The system will never resume without the corruption issue at
this point until I reboot.

@diddly-chops, it certainly sounds like you have a different bug to
92599. I assume you have also tried setting Detect Refresh Rate = OFF
and Refresh Rate to match your monitor (or double thereof)?

If that still doesn't work then you certainly have a different bug.
However because this bug was logged by someone other than yourself, we
shouldn't unduplicate this bug just yet.

Please log a new bug of your own with as much detail as possible so
hopefully it can be classified and dealt with more accurately.

I'll update in saying that when I took out the audio processing on that
clip and set the audio level so that the end of the first clip of
beginning of the following clip aligned, I was able to export the whole
thing. But even then, it was buggy. Somewhere in the process of messing
with things, it almost got through the whole thing, but stopped and
froze at the point where the last track started.

[Bug 861061] Re: Running compiz makes 3D apps like glxspheres (VirtualGL) perform worse.

2011-11-02 Thread Daniel van Vugt
That is to be expected. Using pure buffer swaps is (presently) much more
CPU intensive for compiz than the default rendering method, because it
(presently) has to redraw every part of the screen on every frame (60
times per second). The default rendering method for compiz only tries to
redraw what changes, but doesn't use buffer swapping so will cause
tearing.

It's a trade-off, and obviously why "Force full screen redraws (buffer
swap) on repaint" is not turned on by default. I hope that we can
eventually make buffer swapping efficient enough that it can be turned
on by default (part of the fix for bug 880707, but apparently also in
progress upstream in compiz).

[Bug 760814] Re: Compiz Very Slow and Choppy in Natty Classic

2011-11-02 Thread Chops II
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 92599 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/92599

Hi all,
I believe that the duplicate status is INCORRECT as I have what seems to be
EXACTLY this issue, and I tried the workaround provided for bug #92599 and it
DID NOT WORK. (Caps for emphasis & clarity, not for anger, sorry if this
bothers you, I don't post often, let me know)

My issue is that my graphics are choppy IMMEDIATELY once user session
starts, it doesn't degrade over time. Dropping back to metacity fixes
it. With compiz, running glxgears gives CLI readout of 20K+ FPS but
effectively I only see 1 frame every few seconds. Same issue with some
other OpenGL games, display is really choppy on the game window, but the
FPS readout for the game is 10s of thousands of FPS. With metacity, get
smooth display and readout of 10K+ FPS

I have tried disabling the DynamicTwinView option, and nvidia-settings
has confirmed that it now cannot control the screen resolutions etc as
the option is disabled, but I still have EXACTLY the same choppiness
with compiz and glxgears.

Thanks for your time! Let me know if you need something from me (as I
said I don't post often so I'm not sure what I'm supposed to put).

[Bug 885542] [NEW] thunderbird email search should begin with the most recent email then progress to the oldest (what the user is searching for is more likely to be in recent rather than older emails)

[Bug 872219] Re: Applications lens "disappears"

2011-11-02 Thread GGBerry
Well, I gave up...

The problem was sporadic before yesterday. Actually, most of the time, I
hit the Super key and start typing to run the terminal or gedit, but
because of the few seconds needed to load the applications results, I
came opening a file which start the same instead. But for me this wasn't
really a problem.

The problem reported in this bug don't let me run any application. I can
access to my default applications, and that's it. Reboot useless. I've
been searching the whole day, spending stupidly a day off, without any
results.

I finished taking a decision: switch to Gnome Shell. Since I have been
using it, it is really flawless and (thanks god) I can access my
programs. So, until Gnome Shell give me the same issues as Unity, for my
problem is solved.

PS: If you don't want to read some complains and listen about bitter taste,
stop reading right now.
Let me told you my little story.
I'm right now a fanboy of DropBox. I recommend it to everyone. Of course I know
of all the issues there are with it. Security and confidentiality are big
stuff, but I explain about them, and let people choose. I came to love Dropbox
because of Ubuntu. When Ubuntu One came in default install, I didn't know what
it was. I tested it and I LOOOVED it. Adios USB Key. Just Awesome. But... it
started creating conflicts between files, not syncing everything, telling me
everything was OK, when actually it didn't performed anything. I started to
look for alternatives, and found DropBox, and never came back. Adios Ubuntu One.
And now, the same occurs with Unity. I loved it with 11.04, but after 1 week
with 11.10, I have to search for alternatives, in this case Gnome Shell.
The same occured with the Me Menu with Empathy, which had some bug with gmail,
and the stupid Offline status that blocked the all menu
In the end, Ubuntu is staying with every release at the edge of technology and
functionality, always surprising me. But because of unsifficient testing (I
think), the pieces of software Ubuntu release are never ready and you have to
wait 2 or 3 release to see things working OK. It's sad: I am getting amazed by
Ubuntu new features, but in the end, I always have to search for the more
stable alternative. Don't get me wrong: I have a LOT of respect for all the
Ubuntu Community and for Canonical, but it's just sad to get disappointed in
the end. Above all on terms of stability, which is Ubuntu leitmotiv (since it
should be flawless for everyone, everywhere)

[Bug 742544] Re: Launcher is shown on the wrong screen in some multi-monitor setups

2011-11-02 Thread Daniel van Vugt
@marzal, please open NVIDIA X Server Settings and make sure you have the
box ticked for "Make this the primary display for the X screen".

Please also provide output of this command:

  grep UScreen ~/.xsession-errors

It will give detailed information about your monitors. I added this in
version 4.24.0-0ubuntu2b1vv1.

[Bug 763230] Re: No option to minimize windows from the Unity panel (e.g. right-click menu)

2011-11-02 Thread Glenn Chugg
I feel the whole Right Click menu is wasted in what is COULD offer, I
think it should read like this:

App Title Here <- Clicking this will restore it (same as left click).
-
Maximize <- Change to Restore if already Maximized.
Minimize <- Hidden (or grayed out) if already Minimized.
Quit
Force Quit
-
Keep In Launcher
Edit Launcher
-
Apps Extra Options here
.
.
.

Force Quit is Needed, at least considered optional (once the Unity team
start working on adding options that is). . . All of these things can be
optional of course. :)
