[Bug 886521] Re: CONFIG_XEN_PLATFORM_PCI should be "y" when building 3.1 kernel

2011-11-05 Thread Brad Figg
Thank you for taking the time to file a bug report on this issue.

However, given the number of bugs that the Kernel Team receives during
any development cycle it is impossible for us to review them all.
Therefore, we occasionally resort to using automated bots to request
further testing. This is such a request.

We have noted that there is a newer version of the development kernel
than the one you last tested when this issue was found. Please test
again with the newer kernel and indicate in the bug if this issue still
exists or not.

If the bug still exists, change the bug status from Incomplete to
Confirmed. If the bug no longer exists, change the bug status from
Incomplete to Fix Released.

If you want this bot to quit automatically requesting kernel tests, add
a tag named: kernel-bot-stop-nagging.

Thank you for your help, we really do appreciate it.

[Bug 882274] Re: Community engagement is broken

2011-11-05 Thread Garthhh
This is an interesting discussion

when I look at the entire situation, I probably see it a different way
the organizational structure is a mashup of different elements
some of the integration between the tools are as MS would put it are suboptimal
I know there is no time to to think ways to improve the structure of larger
organizations

no idea what would be better
there are all manner of ways to communicate

for real work, it's hard to beat email or even mailing lists
the lack of organization & just shear volume, can be overwhelming
this format [launchpad] is good,
possibly a limited access version. Anyone could read only certain people
[groups] could post
some of us would be quite interested in following along the discussions of the
big picture, while keeping the devs from having to interact with too many
people, the time constraints are very real & do need to be respected

[Bug 886568] [NEW] Spaces and certain other characters are inserted out of order after an input sequence is completed

2011-11-05 Thread Alex Lee
Public bug reported:

1) Xubuntu 11.10
2) ibus-m17n 1.3.2-1ubuntu1

(Apologies if my terminology is not quite right here, by the way.)

When I finish off an input sequence by entering a character that does
not continue the sequence further, it often happens that this last
letter that I type (typically a space) will be inserted *before* the
character that was being built by the input sequence.

For example, active grc-mizuochi and try to type a Greek alpha with an
acute accent. Follow it with a space.

The input sequence would be "a/ ".
Expected output is "ά ".
But what I instead get is " ά".

Now, I found that if I edit the .mim file and add the following rule:
(" " ? )
Then the behavior changes to what I would expect. That is, I have to explicitly
define the space character in the .mim file in order to get the result "ά ". In
fact, I think that any character that is not explicitly defined in the .mim
file will exhibit the behavior I describe above; the problem isn't specific to
the space character.

This wasn't a problem with ibus on earlier versions of Ubuntu (I used it
extensively on 10.10 and 11.04). Is there a way to get the old behavior
back? Thanks!

[Bug 837954] Re: knockd service fails to start when connecting with NetworkManager

I have the very same issue unter Lucid (10.04.3), i.e. starting knockd
just leads to the two entries in the log, and that's it. However,
changing the start script to upstart does not help...

[Bug 886571] [NEW] printing from libreoffice garbles output

2011-11-05 Thread Florian Hars
Public bug reported:

If I write a text in libreoffice and then print it, a random subset of
the characters in the output are replaced with another character (I have
seen ¨ and u in different documents). If I export as PDF, I can print
that document without problems.

I print to the IPP service on a Samsung CLP-610ND printer using the
recommended foomatic CLP-610 driver (the other CLP-610 and the CLP-610ND
driver offered by the config panel do always produce a "use the proper
driver" error page).

Other people have seen the same behaviour with a HP LaserJet 1022
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1870870
and a HP Color LaserJet 1600
http://www.ubuntu-forum.de/index.php?page=Thread&postID=337315

This is a regression in 11.10.

I did all testing with the the most recent 3.1 Ubuntu's kernel in Dom0 and HVM
DomU as well.
I am just saying that CONFIG_XEN_PLATFORM_PCI should be equal "y" as on Fedora
16 for instance.
Please , see how RH's development tuned mainstream kernel for Fedora 16.
That's an excellent sample.

You might loose option loading Precise in PVHVM domain, because not every
customer can rebuild
kernel in Ubuntu style, e.g. reproduce :-
http://blog.avirtualhome.com/2011/10/28/how-to-compile-a-new-ubuntu-11-10-oneiric-kernel/
what I did to load PV-on-HVM. I will attach dmesg report for PVHVM domain
loaded with 3.1 Ubuntu's
kernel having hard linked xen-platform-pci driver for better understanding
what i am talking about.
Extract from dmesg report at PVHVM DomU :-

[0.00] DMI: Xen HVM domU, BIOS 4.1.2 10/23/2011
[0.00] Hypervisor detected: Xen HVM
[0.00] Xen version 4.1.
[0.00] Xen Platform PCI: I/O protocol version 1
[0.00] Netfront and the Xen platform PCI driver have been compiled for
this kernel: unplug emulated NICs.
[0.00] Blkfront and the Xen platform PCI driver have been compiled for
this kernel: unplug emulated disks.
[0.00] You might have to change the root device
[0.00] from /dev/hd[a-d] to /dev/xvd[a-d]

[Bug 886573] [NEW] Checkbox-gtk System Test destroyed SSD drive on suspend test

2011-11-05 Thread Kat Amsterdam
Public bug reported:

On my HP TX-2-1050ed
with OCZ Vertex2 Sata II 2.5" SSD 120GB
 I did a
fresh install of Oneric 11.10
updated all packages
started checkbox-gtk (System Test)
When it did the Sleep and resume test where the laptop goes to sleep and you
have to resume using the power button
I got a nasty system error No Harddisk Found
When I went into the BIOS it also could no longer find the SSD.
So I put in a Kingston 120GB and started the machine just fine again.
I put the OCZ Vertex2 into a USB harddrive enclosure and inserted it into my HP
6730b and it came back with a
usb 2-5: device descriptor read/64, error -110
meaning the drive is dead
I plugged the drive into a WindowsXP box and it also reported the drive as
being dead.

I don't have the apt-cache policy pkgname data because that is on the
destroyed SSD and I don't dare try the same test again on my 6730b as
not to lose another €140 drive.

it's most likely the same as on my HP6730b
checkbox-gtk:
  Geïnstalleerd: 0.12.8
  Kandidaat: 0.12.8
  Versietabel:
 *** 0.12.8 0

Description:Ubuntu 11.10
Release:11.10

What I expected to happen. HP tx2-1050ed goes into sleep mode
Push the power button and resume computing.

What really happened.
Computer went to sleep
On resume the drive indicator flashed like mad
Screen remained blank
Had to hard reset the computer (4 sec power button)
When it came back the BIOS reports harddisk destroyed

[Bug 873370] Re: [Thinkpad 200772U, Analog Devices AD1981] Sound playback distorted, especially when moving cursor with trackpoint, touchpad, or mouse

2011-11-05 Thread viss
Ubuntu 11.10, upgraded 11.04, Thinkpad t60 [2007FUG]

I'm not sure whether I can help or not but I have the same issues.
In my opinion the error could also brought by some video driver problems.
After recognizing this error I have tried to install the fglrx driver.
And of course it didn't work because of the outdated version of the video card.
But I haven't had the bug with "noisy clicks and 'burps" again.

Now that I have adjusted my system and cleaned out the fglrx driver the
problem occurs again.

[Bug 886574] Re: Using a mouse shortcut for "Scale windows" causes Unity panels to stop responding

2011-11-05 Thread Terry Callan
** Description changed:

- Ubuntu version: 11.10 64 bit, Unity 3D, Everything updated
-
I'm using a mouse shortcut to activate the Scale Compiz plugin. In 11.04
this worked fine, but I've been having some trouble since the upgrade
(took me a while to pin down exactly what was going on). Specifically,
none of the Unity panels respond to the first mouse click after using
  the Scale shortcut.

  To reproduce:
  1) Set up a mouse shortcut for "Initiate Window Picker" or "Initiate Window
Picker For Windows on Current Output" in ccsm under the Bindings tab of the
Scale plugin
  2) Activate the mouse shortcut
  3) Try to click somewhere on the Unity panels; the first click will be
ignored, but subsequent clicks respond as normal until the mouse shortcut is
used again.

Note that this behavior doesn't seem to happen when using keyboard
shortcuts for the same Scale actions.

[Bug 875632] Re: When http_proxy is unreachable, banshee spins 200% cpu (and may lock entire system if unlucky, requiring unclean reboot)

2011-11-05 Thread Bart de Koning
I just updated my system and it is not fixed yet, or released yet. But I found
some more information that might give some more clues on what actually happens.
Because it is not just people that are disconnected from the internet, it
affects also people that did not sign up for the ubuntu one service as well,
whether they are connected to the internet or not.
If I turn off the ubuntu one store, Banshee works fine, but as soon as I hit
the ubuntu store option it starts spinning at 341% (!) CPU (on a quadcore, most
probably it just starts using all available processor power), and Banshee is
completely stuck. (I once tried to leave it for a while, but that just drained
my battery)
This is the debug output that immediately arises when I hit the option. It
searches for a folder that does not exist on my computer. Despite the warnings
that occur, it apparently continues nevertheless, trying to resolve a NULL
somewhere

I've found the reason. Since 0.12 opensc can only have one card reader
driver enabled at any time, The default is pcsc. It seems pcsc does not
work correctly with the eToken Pro. I did recompile opensc with pcsc
disabled and openct enabled for Kubuntu 11.10 and now it works ok.

Hope that helps.

2011-11-05 Thread Austin Ensminger
Public bug reported:

Compiz will draw a overlay as if snapping windows when switching to a
desktop with a maximized window.

To reproduce:
1. Maximize a window on desktop #2.
2. Switch to desktop #1.
3. Press super+S to view desktop expo.
4. Double-click on desktop #2 to switch to that desktop (you'll be clicking on

[Bug 886574] [NEW] Using a mouse shortcut for "Scale windows" causes Unity panels to stop responding

2011-11-05 Thread Terry Callan
Public bug reported:

I'm using a mouse shortcut to activate the Scale Compiz plugin. In 11.04
this worked fine, but I've been having some trouble since the upgrade
(took me a while to pin down exactly what was going on). Specifically,
none of the Unity panels respond to the first mouse click after using
the Scale shortcut.

To reproduce:
1) Set up a mouse shortcut for "Initiate Window Picker" or "Initiate Window
Picker For Windows on Current Output" in ccsm under the Bindings tab of the
Scale plugin
2) Activate the mouse shortcut
3) Try to click somewhere on the Unity panels; the first click will be ignored,
but subsequent clicks respond as normal until the mouse shortcut is used again.

Note that this behavior doesn't seem to happen when using keyboard
shortcuts for the same Scale actions.

[Bug 886575] [NEW] SMplayer regression in 11.10.

2011-11-05 Thread LStranger
Public bug reported:

SMplayer got a critical regression bug in smplayer package in 11.10 so
I've got few complains from my friends who used to use it to watch
videos and they complain they cannot watch them after upgrading from
11.04 to 11.10. Simple google search gave me a hint, I've made a custom
package, installed it on 3 computers of my friends and my friends are
satisfied now.

Bug consists of extra patch which was included in version 0.6.9-2
(ubuntu 11.04 has 0.6.9-1 and ubuntu 11.10 has 0.6.9-4). That patch adds
"ffodivxvdpau" to list of default codecs on call to mplayer. It sounds
good as it can lower CPU usage if used with decent video card (Nvidia
GeForce 210 and newer). But it fails if used with not-so-decent video
cards such as Nvidia GeForce 8xxx, 9xxx, ION, GTX 2xx - those cards have
vdpau but don't support HW decoding of DivX/XviD streams. Ironically
users who have more decent video usually also have more decent CPU which
isn't loaded a lot with decoding such video by CPU means. And since it
makes most of AVI files unplayable anymore on many of "office type"
desktops, we just lost the effort of that patch. It's too big regression
and I ask you to rollback the patch ASAP. Also I've found that
developers of smplayer are aware of that bug already so I think that
patch will be never needed as required tests and changes will be made in
smplayer upstream.

Thank you in advance.

[Bug 885027] Re: SUID Mount Helper has 5 Major Vulnerabilities

2011-11-05 Thread Neo139
>The mount helper was only used if udisks is not present. calibre still
works out of the box on the vast majority of modern Linux distros.

Please correct me if I'm wrong,
even if you have a modern distro with udisks, if you installed calibre via the
official binary install, which is recommended in the website ("Please do not
use your distribution provided calibre package, as those are often
buggy/outdated. Instead use the Binary install described below. ") then
calibre-mount-helper gets installed automatically even if udisks is present.
Doesn't matter if calibre uses it or not. Every user that followed that advise
is now vulnerable to privilege escalation.

[Bug 833337] Re: Current timezone duplicates with saved locations

2011-11-05 Thread Simon Volpert
I'm experiencing this with indicator-datetime-0.3.1-0ubuntu1, from
oneric-proposed with the following specifics:
My current location is listed twice consecutively in the indicator menu;
My current location is not defined in the locations dialog;
Defining my current location in the locations dialog has no effect;
When setting another location as "home" in the indicator menu, the extraneous
home-location disappears;
When selecting the original home location in the indicator menu, the extraneous
home-location reappears;
Defining additional locations with the same timezone as my home location and
switching to and from them produces inconsistent, confusing results;

Reinstalling indicator-datetime and restarting is has no effect;
Installing all pending upgrades and rebooting did not help;
Running dpkg-reconfigure on tzdata does not help;

I was unable to find neither the settings file for the indicator my home
directory nor any related entries in gconf.

What steps should i take to help resolve this issue?

Re: [Bug 1] Re: Microsoft has a majority market share

2011-11-05 Thread Tom
Hi :)
The LTS is the equivalent of the Stable Branch for Debian except that Stable =
Old Development Branch so it's usually been around a few years before it's
considered stable.

The LTS is developed as new and stable right from pre-planning stages.
Updates, patches and all are back-ported to the LTS for 3 years after
release (5years for server edition) on a higher priority than they are
back-ported to other supported 6monthly releases.

So, i tend to get most clients onto the LTS and try to stick with it
myself too. Soemtimes i move 1 or 2 machines onto the 6monthlies if
there are issues with wireless drivers or something but i try to stay
with the LTS if possible.

I do quite like Unity and think that it's good to have as the default. People
that need something a bit beefier tend to be the sort of people that are able
to switch DEs anyway.
Regards from
Tom :)

[Bug 886580] [NEW] lightdm freeze

2011-11-05 Thread CPKS
Public bug reported:

Until yesterday I was using 11.04. Unity worked fine with GDM. Then I
installed 11.10.

After boot, lightdm puts up the greeter OK. If I select "Ubuntu-2D"
(Unity 2D) from the login box, then after a 30-second wait I have a
usable Unity desktop. However, the network indicator falsely states that
networking is disabled. If I log out, lightdm freezes (I get the text-
mode screen with "checking battery state" etc). When I examine the
process list, it seems that there are two lightdm processes, one of
which is preventing the other from restarting. If I kill them, lightdm
restarts.

If I try to log in using Unity-3D, however, there is a long wait before
the desktop appears. I get no launcher bar on the left - not even when I
press the "windows" key. Nor does the rightmost logout widget appear on
the top bar. I have a similar problem on logout - no greeter appears and
I'm left in an unresponsive text mode screen.

If I kill all the lightdm processes and start gdm, everything is fine. I
can start Unity-3D and indeed any other desktop with no problems. And
it's much, much quicker.

Re: [Bug 773761] Re: Screen dim does not work on Natty using nvidia-current drivers

2011-11-05 Thread Rodrigo Delgado
Hello Fabio

Yes, the problem remains in 11.10. And on that release, I have solved
the issue by using acpi_osi=Linux as a kernel boot flag.

Best regards
Rodrigo

[Bug 857598] Re: socksify fails to run

2011-11-05 Thread ADFH
Hrrmm.. apport-collect complains I don't have dante installed when I
attempt to update my system details on this bug, as I don't have dante
installed, just dante-client.. When I try to change the bug to the
dante-client package however, it tells me it's a binary package and it's
going to log it against the source package.

Is this a bug in apport-collect?
