[Bug 692691] Re: update-grub thinks my kernel is a xen one

2011-11-15 Thread Steve Langasek
** Description changed:

+ SRU justification:
+ The version of grub included in lucid has code for detecting Xen-only kernels
which misfires on later kernel releases, where Xen guest support may be built
into a kernel that can also be run on bare hardware. The distro kernels for
natty and later are built in precisely this way, which means that the LTS
backport kernels for natty and oneiric are also built this way - making it
impossible to use these backported kernels on a 10.04 LTS system that's using
grub 1 as its bootloader.
+
+ Test case:
+ 1. Configure 10.04 LTS with grub as its bootloader.
+ 2. Install the linux-image-server-lts-backport-oneiric package. Observe that
the newly installed kernel is ignored by update-grub as in the below messages.
+ 3. Install the grub package from lucid-proposed. Observe that the 3.0.0
kernel is no longer ignored by update-grub.
+
  Binary package hint: grub

I noticed I'm not running that latest kernel and it seems that update-
grub doesn't like the newest ones I have available.

[Bug 692691] Re: update-grub thinks my kernel is a xen one

2011-11-15 Thread Steve Langasek
On Wed, Nov 16, 2011 at 06:24:00AM -, Rush Tonop Online wrote:
> One year past - Canonical does nothing.

That is most certainly not true. This bug was *fixed* in the version of
grub that it was reported against, in the release that included the
kernels that exposed the problem. That this would subsequently cause
problems on the 10.04 LTS release due to backported kernels was not
obvious at the time - and following up to a closed bug is generally not
the most effective way to draw developers' attention to such an issue
(it's probably better to file a new bug).

Now that the issue is known, this definitely becomes a priority to fix
since it makes the backported kernels useless.

[Bug 885033] Re: ISO generation fails in the encoding stage with segmentation fault

2011-11-15 Thread Mikko Lipasti
Hello,

Build process aborts, but at a much later stage and for reasons I
believe are not related to this (I think I have too many titles in one
titleset). Thus I can't verify the ISO at the moment. Maybe someone else
could provide definitive positive confirmation about this if that is
needed.

2011-11-15 Thread Raphaël Hertzog
Please attach /var/lib/dpkg/info/libapr1.list (or libapr1:amd64.list not
sure). Then remove that file and try reinstalling libapr1. It should
solve your problem.

The file got corrupted but your report doesn't help us find out how. It
might be an hardware problem or a filesystem corruption.

[Bug 763005] Re: Compiz's "Sync to Vblank" makes display stutter/slow with some drivers (like fglrx)

I don't know if the Unity team has an exact date in mind. The list of
things to be fixed for Unity update 4.26 appears to be just over half
completed:

https://launchpad.net/unity/+milestone/4.26.0

I don't think it's necessary to sync compiz updates with Unity, but that
appears to be the way the project is managed officially.

[Bug 803943] Re: compiz consuming a lot of cpu

2011-11-15 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Most of the compiz CPU usage problems should be solved when a fix for
bug 861061 is released.

Also, I have made significant progress reducing compiz CPU usage in my
proposed fix for bug 880707.

Please keep an eye on both those bugs because I think most of the compiz
CPU usage problems will be resolved by those being fixed.

[Bug 882274] Re: Community engagement is broken

2011-11-15 Thread Tal Liron
@Bazon

Thanks! As I keep trying to emphasize, I did not open this bug because I
think Unity is bad, nor because I want Unity to be something that's it
not supposed to be, nor because I'm unaware that there are many other
terrific free software alternative, in Ubuntu and beyond.

This bug is not about the software. This bug is about making the Unity
project more welcoming -- or at least less alienating. Too many people
feel that Unity has been shoved down their throats. Too many people feel
that they have been tricked into being beta testers. Too many people
feel that their legitimate complaints, suggestions and even patches are
unwelcome. Too many people, who have devoted years of "outsider" effort
to promote Ubuntu are feeling like Ubuntu is treating them more as a
nuisance than a boon.

Mark keeps listing the very convincing reasons for all of this, that are
beyond Ubuntu's control: it's not Ubuntu's fault that GNOME 3 did not
offer a GNOME-2-like fallback experience at the same time as Oneiric
came out; Ubuntu can't please everyone and Unity must remain focused in
order to maintain quality moving forward; there's simply not enough time
to answer every single complaint. That's all true. But it doesn't make
our sense of alienation any less legitimate.

On the other hand, it may not be Ubuntu's responsibility to fix this
situation. Moreover, the sad fact may be that it's just not a priority:
perhaps we, a few loudly unhappy members of the Ubuntu community, are
deemed expendable. At the time of this writing, this bug is still marked
"new," "unassigned" and of "undecided" importance. I'm sure we're just
counting the days until it is closed as "won't fix."

Oh, well. I'm willing to admit that I'm blowing a lot of hot air here
over nothing at all. This might just be a time of difficult (and
necessary?) transition, and by 12.04 Ubuntu will ship to broad popular
enthusiasm on all fronts: from people who have never been exposed to
free software and are delighted by the purple-and-orange wonder, and
from us old fuddy duddies who learned to use a mouse with Windows 95 and
refuse to change our crochety habits. ;)

[Bug 885204] Re: Recommending proprietary driver on hybrid systems can break 3D

Nuno, see the bug description. Installing the proprietary NVidia driver
installs NVidia's libGL fork, which is not compatible with intel's. So
while you configured the BIOS to use the intel card, you'd break your
X.org by installing nvidia.

[Bug 827558] Re: toshiba_acpi unable to load on TOSHIBA SATELLITE C670-10V

2011-11-15 Thread Seth Forshee
Note that I think there's a better solution than a timeout -- the driver
can detect upfront whether or not HCI_SYSTEM_EVENT is supported and
choose not to use it. Probably the INFO method can be used like on other
devices that use NTFY, but they will need to be decoupled because your
machine doesn't support NTFY in the same way.

One other interesting note is that your machine seems to have a WMI
interface, which could be superior to the interface toshiba_acpi is
using. This is the first time I've seen WMI on a Toshiba machine.

[Bug 827558] Re: toshiba_acpi unable to load on TOSHIBA SATELLITE C670-10V

2011-11-15 Thread Seth Forshee
On most Toshibas I've seen the backlight interface toshiba_acpi uses is
read-only, and that's the case on your model. I've verified in your DSDT
that writing the backlight level isn't supported. toshiba_acpi will not
be able to control your backlight. The acpi_video backlight driver
doesn't work on your machine? It looks like the BIOS implements the
necessary ACPI methods. Have you tried adjusting the backlight manually
using the interfaces in /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0?

The "Re-enabled hotkeys" issue needs to be addressed. Your machine is
different that those the driver currently supports, and I need to study
it a bit more before I know how to handle it. I'll let you know when I
have something new for you to test.

libtasn1-3 (2.10-1ubuntu1) precise; urgency=low

  * debian/rules: Disable compression of NEWS file for now to unbreak
upgrades. Debugging the underlying gzip bug is quite hard and will take
more time than a few hours. (LP: #889303)

[Bug 882274] Re: Community engagement is broken

@Tal#91:
Very good suggestion! Even on ubuntuforums.org I read about people dualbooting
between different tastes of ubuntu instead of just selecting another DE in the
DM.
Also, (as I said before), I'm very happy with Xubuntu+Compiz+Ambiance, so I
suppose that or other DE-options could be a solution for other not happy with
unity.

[Bug 890985] [NEW] gnome-shell ubuntu 64 bits

2011-11-15 Thread César Carruitero
Public bug reported:

I try to install gnome-shell in ubuntu 11.10 64 bits. I do this steps.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get install gnome-shell

Then I restart. But when I enter, don't see gnome-shell only seen gnome
clasic. I check in Software Center and is installed correctly.

When i put gnome-shell --replace

I have this error
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".

(gnome-shell:13296): Clutter-CRITICAL **: Unable to initialize Clutter: The
OpenGL version could not be determined
Window manager error: Unable to initialize Clutter.
