[Bug 903475] Re: Failed to upgrade from Oneiric to Precise: E:Could not perform immediate configuration on 'openoffice.org-writer'

2011-12-13 Thread Martin Pitt
Some note keeping:

- installed openoffice.org and openoffice.org-writer in a clean and up to date
oneiric VM
- apt-get dist-upgrade --simulate works fine (which should pick up
pre-dependency loops, a common cause for this error message)
- I tried to inject apt::get::simulate into do-release-upgrade (both in
apt.conf.d and inserting it into the code), but that gets ignored
- sudo apt-get dist-upgrade works all the way through (reboot OK)
- do-release-upgrade -d works all the way through

So it seems I don't have enough packages installed yet to reproduce
this.

[Bug 818177] Re: boot failures because 'udevadm exit' times out while udevd waits for an already-dead thread

2011-12-13 Thread KnisterPeter
I run into the timeout since 2 days. Before that my oneiric experience was
quite good. After reading this comments it seems I should be happy that there
is a timeout after 61s, but whats causing udev to timeout?
Its very annoying to sit and wait for the system - especially when it does boot
a lot faster the day before...

Any idea how to find the root cause of the timeout?

[Bug 625395] Re: ~30s boot pause

2011-12-13 Thread KnisterPeter
It might be related to /usr/share/initramfs-tools/scripts/init-bottom/udev
since in recover boot I see the init-bottom scripts for a long time and in the
udev script there is a timeout of 61sec...
What does this do and why could it change the boot process in such a dramatic
way?

[Bug 882479] Re: [Inspiron N4050, Vostro 1450, Vostro V131] Compiz works unnormally after external VGA connected.

2011-12-13 Thread Tim Chen
I'm not sure if this is same as bug 838128.
Before I started to reproduce this bug, I removed ~/.xsession-errors and
/var/log/Xorg.0.log, then I reproduced the bug, then tried to open
~/.xsession-errors and /var/log/Xorg.0.log, but the files were not even created.
So I looked at the /var/log/syslog, what I saw clearly is that every time I
unplug/plug the external monitor cable, I can see the message:
x kernel: [] [drm:pch_irq_handler] *ERROR* PCH poison
interrupt

However I see the same error message as bug 838128 in the old .xsession-
errors I saved.

[Bug 894486] Re: After a clean install the touchpad doesn't work untill rebooting xserver or pc

2011-12-13 Thread Martin Pitt
When this happens, can you please give us the output of

  gsettings list-recursively org.gnome.settings-
daemon.peripherals.touchpad

? In particular, I'm interested in whether touchpad-enabled flips to
false, which would be a gnome-settings-daemon misbehaviour.

Neither gnome-settings-daemon nor x-x-input-synaptics changed in
precise, though, and this seems to be a new problem in precise. So we
need to find out what's different compared to oneiric.

Thanks!

[Bug 892579] Re: Unable to scan in GIMP

2011-12-13 Thread Martin Pitt
Can you please report the xscanimage crash with apport, so that we get a
proper backtrace? This will create a new report, so I'm closing this
one.

Also, I'm regularly using simple-scan, which is working perfectly here.
We do so support that (we don't support xscanimage), so crash reports
there have a much higher chance of being worked on.

Thanks!

[Bug 709968] Re: Multiple problems

2011-12-13 Thread Paul Childs
I also have this problem, though my gdk-critical is on line 5148 and
I've only got it and the DSP error displayed. I think for some reason
the packaging outputs to /dev/dsp which was done away with in Maverick,
so I hink the problem is that the package hasn't been reconfigured
properly for Maverick and later.

[Bug 873548] Re: Brother MFC 7440N printer is detected but will not print

2011-12-13 Thread Ron Campbell
I tried again after restarting the printer but there was no luck. It
seems the drivers for the 7450 are not meant for the 7440N at all.

I did some more searching and have been able to get the printer working.
It is using 7440N drivers and a cupswrapper. Below is how to set it up.

---
Instructions taken from these sources:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1606673
http://63.231.93.8/drupal/?q=node/6
http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public_s/id/linux/en/index.html

To setup the Brother MFC-7440N printer/scanner on Ubuntu 64bit 11.10 using a
USB connection:

1) Download the LPR Driver (deb) and cupswrapper driver (deb) from the brother
web site:
http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public_s/id/linux/en/download_prn.html#MFC-7440N

2) Create this folder if it does not alread exist
[code]
sudo mkdir /usr/share/cups/model
[/code]

3) Install the downloaded LPR Driver
[code]
sudo dpkg -i --force-all brmfc7440nlpr-2.0.2-1.i386.deb
[/code]

The '--force-all' switch is required as this package is designed for x86
architecture and we are using x64. The --force-architecture switch
could be used instead of --force-all.

4) Install the downloaded Cupswrapper Driver
[code]
sudo dpkg -i --force-architecture cupswrapperMFC7440N-2.0.2-1.i386.deb
[/code]

Again this is an x86 package and we are using x64

At this point a test print will work however in my case the borders were
not correct, the next step selects the PPD file which will correct this.

5) Select the PPD file for the printer
System - Printers - MFC7440N - Properties
Make and Model: - Change
Provide PPD File
Browse to /usr/share/cups/model and select the file MFC7440N.PPD

A test print with borders worked correctly after selecting this file

---

If I do a search in the Ubuntu Software Centre for 'mfc' I see a bunch
of brother cupswrapper drivers and ppd files. (None of them are for the
7440N). Is there a way we can create a package out of the information
we have here and publish it so that it is easy to install the 7440N
printer by installing a package from the Ubuntu Software Centre?

Most average and non technical users are not going to put in the
research or effort required to make this printer work in Ubuntu. They
will simply assume it doesn't work. I would like to make it easy for
them if I can.

How do we get this incorporated into the CUPS drivers updates or published in
the Ubuntu Software Centre?
Is the PPD file that gets created usable as a stand alone file on a clean
install without going through the above?

[Bug 894170] Re: libdvdread core dumps with invalid next size

2011-12-13 Thread rickyrockrat
Just wanted to note that this segfault happens with this patch in place:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libdvdread/+bug/852345

And without it (i.e. in Lucid), I don't get the segfault - but of course
Thor doesn't play there.

I think it's like peeling an onion. As the top bugs are exposed and
fixed, more are revealed. There are more issues in libdvdread that
valgrind complained about, but I didn't have time to investigate all of
them. I hope to eventually...

[Bug 901381] Re: excepthook in gtk_ui.py should write a crash report instead of calling ubuntu-bug

2011-12-13 Thread Martin Pitt
@Brian: Yes, I think that makes sense. I think it should either re-raise
the exception and let /usr/share/pyshared/apport_python_hook.py do its
magic, or if that is inappropriate, import that module and call
apport_excepthook() directly.

@Mario: that problem is bug 712677, it's on my list of things to look
into for precise.

[Bug 901381] Re: excepthook in gtk_ui.py should write a crash report instead of calling ubuntu-bug

2011-12-13 Thread Martin Pitt
Indeed this call happens in

def excepthook(self, exctype, excvalue, exctb):

which has the exact same signature as apport_excepthook() (well,
unsurprisingly, as both are standard Python exception handlers). So it would
just need to import apport_python_hook and call apport_excepthook(exctype,
excvalue, exctb).

2011-12-13 Thread Wraith
Okay. after downloading the files I burnt them to a cd and I installed a
fresh copy of Ubuntu 11.10 AMD64 by using the Install option using
"nomodeset" under options as it gets a black screen otherwise. After
installing I booted into recovery and mounted the file system as
read/write and mounted the cd. I then copied them to my /home/cdrom as a
mount point for my cd drive (/dev/sr0) and cooties them and installed
them by executing "dpkg -i *.deb" and after that rebooted into the new
kernel (3.0.0.0-13) and SUCCESSFULLY booted into Unity.

  [Test Case]
  1) Install and run harpia
  2) go to help, examples, and choose Hello World
  3) click on the Run [F9] button
- 4) Doble click on the Image box, in the graph
+ 4) When the button is available again, doble click on the Image box, in the
graph
  5) With the broken version, you see the errors mentionned previously. With
the fixed one, you see the image (a girl with a hat)

  [Regression Potential]
Harpia is not usable at all in the actual status.

[Bug 882997] Re: 64-bit linux guests fail to start on oneiric running 3.0 kernel

2011-12-13 Thread Klaus Rennecke
1. Trying to break it:
Installed the SLES-11-SP1 with the parameters for SLES-10 causing it to use
IDE disk instead of virtio.
Runs fine though, IDE seems not to be the problem.

2. Trying to fix it:
Compiled from the sources: commit da5361cc685c004d8bb4e7c5e7b3a52c7aca2c56 Mon
Dec 12 17:21:34 2011 +0100
Had to copy the executable to /usr/bin/qemu-system-x86_64 moving aside the
original first. Libvirt would not pick it up from a soft link, apparently
failing in trying to auto-sense the version. Strange but inconsequential for
the issue at hand.
 Crashes nicely now:

[Bug 877958] Re: After every single page on ipp: Unable to get print job status

2011-12-13 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package cups - 1.5.0-8ubuntu6

---
cups (1.5.0-8ubuntu6) oneiric-proposed; urgency=low

  * debian/patches/ipp-patch-r8950+.patch: Revert the IPP backend to the state
of CUPS 1.4.x, as the 1.5.x versiuon has major regressions (LP: #877958,
LP: #879625, LP: #881843, LP: #883585, Closes: #638521, CUPS STR #3966,
CUPS STR #3967). This patch will get removed as soon as upstream has fixed
all these regressions. As upstream did not announce any new features for
the IPP backend in the release notes for 1.5.x, we assume that with this
step no features will get lost.
  * debian/patches/dont-send-malformed-dbus-messages.patch: Do not send D-Bus
notifications with too few parameters when there are parameters which
cannot be added to the D-Bus request, especially invalid UTF-8 strings.
This made gnome-session-daemon crash (LP: #893676, CUPS STR #3984).
  * debian/local/filters/cpdftocps: The cpdftocps filter (used for PostScript
printers and for drivers with PPDs which are not PDF-aware) did not
recognize the duplex setting correctly, making duplex not working on
many common printers (LP: #897723).
  * debian/local/filters/cpdftocps: Cleaned up the header comments.

[Bug 880646] Re: 11.04 and up cannot start from RAID/LVM2

2011-12-13 Thread rihad
Perhaps Ubuntu kernel config after 2.6.35-28 started setting an
incompatible option in its "one-for-all" type of kernel config that
fails to initialize LVM2/DM? Maybe I should try building my own lean and
mean custom kernel as I used to back in Debian?
