[Bug 907384] Re: apturl just crashes

2011-12-21 Thread Paul
I tried:

$ sudo apt-get remove --purge --force apturl-common

but was told

E: Command line option --force is not understood

so I tried again, but without that option:

$ sudo apt-get remove --purge apturl-common

[Bug 890441] Re: nautilus memory leak

So, Sebastien, what's the next step here.

I think I've provided enough context to reproduce and prove that it is
not some other setting on my system?

I see that the bug is still "New"...

[Bug 893385] Re: Doesn't update library when a file is missed

2011-12-21 Thread markba
This is very annoying. The only workaround for this is to select tracks
and delete them. This has also worked (prior to the Banshee-era in 11.04
- 11.10) so this is a regression.

[Bug 907471] [NEW] Bad default installation harms Update Manager

2011-12-21 Thread WaltSullivan
Public bug reported:

Since I installed apt-listchanges, when I run update-manager, update-
manager seems to hang (pause without end) displaying its "Applying
changes" window.

When I opened the "Details", I was shown a single line of text "(END)
/tmp/".

After expanding the window, I found it was apt-listchange's output, put
through apt-listchange's pager, which was waiting for my input.

This violates the Principle of Least Surprise.

Prior to my installation of apt-listchanges, update-manager ran without
any keyboard input, after installing apt-listchanges, update-manager
does not.

[Bug 281526] Re: Flash uses 100% CPU after resuming from suspend

2011-12-21 Thread Adam Porter
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected natty

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: firefox

  firefox-3.0 = 3.0.3+build1+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.8.04.1 0

Sometimes when resuming from suspend-to-RAM, Firefox becomes
unresponsive and uses 100% CPU time. An strace shows it in a cycle like
  this:

  --- SIGIO (I/O possible) @ 0 (0) ---
  rt_sigreturn(0xb2503d90) = 240
  futex(0xb2503d90, 0x80 /* FUTEX_??? */, 2) = ? ERESTARTSYS (To be restarted)

- This repeats endlessly and uses all available CPU time. It doesn't
- always happen, and I haven't noticed a pattern yet, but it's happened 3
- or 4 times in the last week.

[Bug 907462] [NEW] scite doesn't show up as running on unity launcher, and is missing from the default alt-tab application switcher

2011-12-21 Thread nanotube
Public bug reported:

Running 11.10, with the default unity UI. installed scite from the
repos. Instances of running scite (a) don't show as running on the
launcher (no white triangle on the right, clicking the pinned menu item
brings up new instance), and (b), are missing from the default
application switcher UI that comes up with alt-tab.

Don't know how unity decides which apps to show, but this should be
fixed, probably not just for scite, but maybe for other applications as
well (i wouldn't be surprised if a bunch of other apps that are not in
"the default install" exhibit the same behavior with unity).

[Bug 902962] Re: Xperia LT15i (arc) using MTP not found

2011-12-21 Thread Felipe Castillo
I've been looking around for workarounds but nothing. I thought I was
the only one with the problem. I guess not a lot of Xperia arc owners
have Ubuntu. I'm going to post a thread on xda developers to see if
anybody has a suggestion there.

Same with Ubuntu 11.10 and Banshee. Running a share with forked-daap

Banshee sees the share but only gives the "Unable to connect to music

version and Banshee 2.3.2 (just upgraded from ppa to get album Artist

[Bug 907454] [NEW] [Dell Precision M4500] offlining and then re-onlining CPUs makes the system unresponsive

2011-12-21 Thread Daniel Manrique
Public bug reported:

This is a fully-updated (from -proposed) 11.10 i386 system.

While testing the 3.0.0-15 kernel we came across this problem, where one
of our tests, which just offlines and then re-onlines all the CPUs,
caused the system to become sluggish, then unresponsive.

Steps to reproduce:
1- Offline all the CPUs by echo 0 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu?/online
1- Online all the CPUs by echo 1 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu?/online

Expected behavior:
- System behaves normally
- Syslog has a record of the offlining and subsequent rebooting of all the CPUs

Actual behavior:
- Some of the CPU offlining commands don't exit or take a long time to exit
- System starts being sluggish, slows down to a crawl and eventually becomes
pretty much unusable
- The gnome-terminal "greys out" and is completely unresponsive
- I can SSH into the system and do some stuff, but anything even moderately
intensive just blocks (e.g. "sync" just never exits).
- Syslog shows messages about a starved canary thread and lots of kernel
oopses. I'll attach kernel logs.

I tested several kernels to further diagnose this:

3.0.0-14 works FINE, CPU offlining/onlining leaves the system in a working
state.
3.0.0-15 FAILS as described.
3.2.0-6.12 from Precise FAILS as described.
3.2.0-rc6 from mainline FAILS as described.

This system is used primarily for testing so please don't hesitate to
ask for any further tests or information.

Other than kernel logs I'll also attach the test script we use for
testing, though it's available in
/usr/share/checkbox/scripts/cpu_offlining in any 11.10 system.

[Bug 827637] Re: [Thinkpad X120e/x220] Touchpad disabled on boot

2011-12-21 Thread Chris Van Hoof
Marc -- Can you test this with Oneiric + updates? There was an odd
issue on the x220 prior to Oneiric being released where the touchpad
would be sluggish (borderline unresponsive) when lightdm was firing up
... it was found that a mystery hdmi port (likely related to the dock)
was being probed endlessly. This was fixed before the final release.

[Bug 907446] Re: Corrupt ttys, splash; Console colour dummy device

2011-12-21 Thread TJ
The original report was made whilst booting the affected system with
"video=efifb:off" which meant the efifb reports were missing from dmesg.
This attachment rectifies that omission.

[Bug 907449] [NEW] unity doesn't refresh the opacity : affects wine thunder installer

2011-12-21 Thread fracting
Public bug reported:

Hello, this bug is original reported to Wine, but Wine developer thinks
this is a windows manager bug. Since it only affects unity ( works on
gnome-classic and XFCE ), I report it to Ubuntu and hope the Unity folks
will have a look.

Wine bug: http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=29401
Bug 29401 - thunder installer in unity doesn't draw itself on start up

1. Download thunder:
http://down.sandai.net/thunder7/Thunder7.2.4.3312.exe

2. try to install:

$ wine Thunder7.2.4.3312.exe

expect result:
Draw a complete UI, users can click "next" to install
actual result:
Draw only a transparent box, but if you know where the "next" button is, you
can click on it and continue to install

Only affects unity:
$ unity --version
unity 4.24.0

can be work around by setting "Allow the window manager to control the windows"
to false.

--- snip ---
Comment by Wine developer:
The app changes the opacity several times to do a fancy transition effect. It
works fine with XFCE, so yes, it's a Unity bug, it sounds like it doesn't
refresh the opacity.

Please. It's free software - you can fork it. We *do* have the right,
and the need, so exercise discretion.

Those things are true, too.

That's not what we're saying. There are *hundreds* of patches that come
in exactly as you describe. Please exercise some judgement and recognise
that your claims of ignorance / obstinacy / arrogance / stupidity on my
part don't gel with the facts: many bugs fixed, many opinions debated
and discussed, many patches accepted with kudos and appreciation.
Recognise that it's rude to put your own pet peeve above those of
everybody else. And then please stop being rude.

Any project which is afraid to decline a feature or a patch is doomed.
We're not interested in being doomed :-)

> Ubuntu became what it is today by and through the community.

That's half the story.

Ubuntu became what it is today by being opinionated. Making choices: one
cd, one release cadence, one mail client (at a time ;-)). All of those
choices were unpopular with somebody; but that's how Ubuntu stepped away
from the crowd. Others have followed, but that opinionated leadership is
*essential* to Ubuntu's success.

When you say that every patch should be accepted you are also suggesting
that every package should be included and every option supported. You
are arguing for failure, and your argument will not carry.

Ubuntu also became what it is today because of the incredible commitment
of people at Canonical. The community is a partner, not an owner or a
moral superior. Folk at Canonical are part of the community too, if you
want to think of it like that. Harrassing and dividing us form one
another is not a helpful or appreciated contribution.

This ship is heading down this river into a new direction. I hope you'll
stay aboard. It will be fun: we are taking free software where it has
never been before:

 * we introduced design, and built Unity, which has been well copied
elsewhere but continues to lead
 * we will bring free software to the tv, tablet, phone, where you can
enjoy it and share it
 * we invest millions and give the result away, asking little in return
 * we support the efforts of teams that bring wholly different
experiences from other projects to their users, building on the common core

That's a lot to be proud of. And we are proud of it.

> I did never talk about Unity being bad or crap. I like it. I did not
> talk of changing the course, I only see the need for adjustments,
> instead of changes. But every time you start to criticize the design
> decisions you are treated as an enemy to the whole project.

Oh nonsense. We have no enemies. There are only people with whom it is
pleasant and useful and constructive to engage, and those with whom it
is not. Any two people will differ on more than they agree upon. We
cannot build a community around the idea that we should all be agreed on
everything; it would be a community of one. So what matters is how we
disagree, and round here, we do it on the basis of:

 * recognising that decisions need to be taken and we have a framework
for taking them
 * recognising that disagreements on a detail (and this is a detail) are
not grounds for hatred, divisiveness, or failure to collaborate on other
matters
 * recognising that the tone and language used for disagreement are
important to ensure we find our agreements fun too

Now, decisions and leaders can be wrong. They can be changed, or they
can change their minds. That's all normal and natural. What's NOT normal
and natural is turning a disagreement on a detail into a basis for
unpleasantness. If you cannot focus and contribute on the areas where we
are in perfect agreement, if you will allow a single disagreement to be
a thorn in your side and then turn into an unpleasant thorn in everybody
else's side, then this is not the best place to hang out. There are too
many details, too many changes, too many

Re: [Bug 160311] Re: Resizing windows by grabbing window borders is difficult

2011-12-21 Thread u-foka
Hy!

I'm a little bit afraid of a larger resize area.. If I click 10px far
from a window, I probably want to raise the window below. 5-6px is ok,
but more is risky, especially because that area is invisible.

[Bug 876711] Re: Screen brightness resets to minimized when screen turns off

@Bobik-s and others experiencing this problem-

For reference, the bug noted in the bug report title is actually a
duplicate of bug 872652 (and glad to hear that 3.0.0-15 fixes it for
you, Bobik-s).

I have prepared a PPA test kernel for Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric) including a
patch which might address the remaining "min/max on every step" problem:

https://launchpad.net/~kamalmostafa/+archive/inverted-backlight

Feedback to this bug report will be appreciated.

the tests rely on test data which is not part of the package. Tom, please could
you evaluate if we can package and distribute the test data (maybe packaged
separately)?

this is a legacy version of the library, for software which expects this
soname.

already fixed with libjpeg8-empty.

[Bug 907446] [NEW] Corrupt ttys, splash; Console colour dummy device

2011-12-21 Thread TJ
Public bug reported:

Sony PCG-SRX51P, with Intel 810 graphics.

A clean installation of 11.10 32-bit, wiping out the previously
correctly working Xubuntu 10.04 installation.

The boot splash screen is corrupted (appears to be text-mode but with
the >128 ASCII-code box drawing characters). Once at the X/Unity log-in
prompt switching to any of the the virtual consoles (tty1-6) the
consoles are also corrupted and impossible to read.

The best description of what is seen is that spaces are spaces, but
characters are drawn outline-shadowed (like HTML inset/outset table
borders) and drawn mirrored through the Y axis. E.g. a "b" looks like a
"d". Making out the characters is extremely difficult unless you know
what to expect, such as when typing username at the console log-in
prompt.

I noticed the kernel reports:

Console: colour dummy console 80x25

instead of what I'd expect:

Console: colour VGA+ 80x25

Also, it seems the efifb driver creates a framebuffer device later
although I'm not sure if it is responsible for the corrupted display.

More likely is that GRUB leaves the video chipset in an unexpected mode.

[Bug 904631] Re: New bug fix releases: 9.1.2, 8.4.10, 8.3.17

2011-12-21 Thread Scott Kitterman
There is a regression in 9.0.6 and 9.1.2 that has been succinctly
described to me as:

"run any of the latest "stable" postgres versions + use indexed inet
columns = fail"

A fix for this issue has been committed upstream and I understand a new
release is forthcoming. In the meantime, I don't think 9.1.2 should be
copied to updates (thus the verification failed).

[Bug 859259] Re: uid, gid, forceuid, forcegid seem to be ignored in smbmount on oneiric 11.10 beta2

2011-12-21 Thread dvo
Erik, very interesting observation.

Apart from the nice workaround implied by this,
I can only say: Oh my goodness, Ubuntu Linux, where have you gone?

Since switching to 11.04, I've been experiencing all kinds of strange
regressions like this and immature stuff like the unity UI.
I'm very close to switching to a Mac.
