Looks like a DBus failure.

You mentioned you restarted gnome-shell. Is DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS set in
gnome-shell's environment? (See /proc/$pid/environ)

[Bug 366235] Re: system monitor uses incorrect network speed (throughput) units

2011-12-30 Thread Robert Roth
@jbicha: If the file downloads are measured in *byte/s, than that should
be changed to bit-based, just like this bug to be consistent. The Ubuntu
units policy [1] clearly states that base-10 (kB, MB, etc.) should be
used to measure network bandwidth, which seems to be the case for
download speeds, upload speeds etc. So consistency should be a goal,
either by using base-2 everywhere and changing the Units policy, or by
fixing the apps showing download/upload to display in base-10.

accessibility fix for bug #485712. You still can customize the colors of
the charts, so you can change it, only the default has been changed to
be easier to distinguish for colorblind people. Because of this I am
setting this bug to Invalid.

[Bug 811485] Re: EFI SYSTEM PARTITION should be atleast 100 MiB size and formatted as FAT32, not FAT16

2011-12-30 Thread Adam Thompson
The EFI/BIOS distinction does apply to the Windows boot process, but it applies
ever earlier to the computer's IPL ("initial program load" - what the CPU
automatically starts executing after poweron). The presence or absence of an
MBR structure has no effect on whether a computer loads a legacy BIOS or
EFI-style firmware at IPL - it is purely and entirely controlled by what code
is present in ROM at (real-mode) address F000:FFF0 at the instant the CPU is
powered on.
During a typical Ubuntu installation, what Windows thinks is happening during
the boot process becomes completely irrelevant, although if Ubuntu and Windows
arrive at different conclusions then yes, major brain-damage can occur.

As to the Allen's hardware, multiple independent sources confirm that HP
is, indeed, shipping UEFI-capable systems with a valid MBR *with* an EFI
boot partition. Yes, that's stupid, but given that I haven't seen a
single vendor (neither software nor hardware) ship a UEFI-based system
that's actually 100% UEFI-compliant, I'm not surprised. I've heard
anectodal reports of other OEMs shipping similar stupidity, HP's sadly
not alone. This seems to go hand-in-hand with "legacy-enabled UEFI"
firmware, which - I think, I don't have any examples on hand to check
right now - boots off an EFI-ish boot partition if one is present, even
on a non-GPT disk.

I would refactor Allen's request to be simpler: Ubuntu needs to be
*MUCH* more flexible when dealing with UEFI (and partial-UEFI, and
hybrid) systems, because the real world doesn't seem to actually conform
the UEFI spec. Not to mention that Ubuntu doesn't currently conform the
UEFI spec, either, which is a problem unto itself.

The GPT specification *requires* a Protective MBR, and in all
implementations found "in the wild" today, any GPT disk will/must/should
have a valid MBR structure at LBA sector #0. The assertion that the
presence of an MBR causes Windows to "boot in BIOS mode" is both untrue
in my experience and impossible according to the GPT specification.
That decision point comes much later, and as of at least Win7 x64
(possibly earlier, not sure), the MBR boot process is very, very similar
to the EFI boot process: even MBR systems get a small boot partition.

Thanks to HP, it's entirely possible that Allen's system does not have a
GPT disk yet still uses UEFI firmware to boot; that situation is no
longer impossible.

Regardless, we all agree that Ubuntu's handling of UEFI+GPT systems
leaves a lot to be desired. I can't imagine that it's handling of some
of the newer hybrid-UEFI or UEFI+MBR systems out there will be any
better!

[Bug 132042] Re: wireless stops working until reboot

2011-12-30 Thread Dan Buch
After running NetworkManager in the foreground for a few more days I
thought I'd go back to running it via the upstart service. Within a
minute of `service network-manager start` I began getting prompted for
new network credentials (same old busted behavior.) I kill'd
wpa_supplicant to see if the behavior was similar to when I was running
NetworkManager in the foreground, but it only made the situation better
for 2 minutes at most per restart. Only after stopping the network-
manager service and going back to running NetworkManager in the
foreground did the situation improve.

Based on the experience of the past week, my next steps will likely be
to dig into the NetworkManager source to see if there's anything special
going on when the process is daemonized especially wrt wpa_supplicant.

[Bug 903374] Re: cannot upgrade to 11.10

2011-12-30 Thread Tim
The upgrade is being halted because of a custom PPA. I will assume its an Xorg
PPA from what i see. You will need to remove that ppa and its installed
packages to proceed. Consider the tool 'ppa-purge' to do this.

[Bug 910301] [NEW] Gnome-shell doesn't start when using fglrx and crossfire

2011-12-30 Thread Richard Eames
Public bug reported:

I have finally got crossfire working; two Radeon 4850. But now gnome-
shell refuses to work with it set up. I can move the mouse on both
monitors, but gnome-shell isn't running. If I try to run it from command
line I get:

$ gnome-shell --replace --sync
Window manager warning: Log level 16: Unable to register authentication agent:
GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.PolicyKit1.Error.Failed: An authentication agent
already exists for the given subject
Window manager warning: Log level 16: Error registering polkit authentication
agent: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.PolicyKit1.Error.Failed: An authentication
agent already exists for the given subject (polkit-error-quark 0)
JS LOG: GNOME Shell started at Fri Dec 30 2011 21:05:53 GMT-0700 (MST)
Window manager warning: Log level 16: The program 'gnome-shell' received an X
Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)'.
  (Details: serial 1247 error_code 8 request_code 7 minor_code 0)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

I'm not sure what other information I can provide.

[Bug 910300] [NEW] the file pg_hba.conf is not working on pgsql 9.1

2011-12-30 Thread Alain Toussaint
Public bug reported:

I am trying to work remotely with Postgresql 9.1 and modified the file:

/var/lib/postgresql/9.1/main/pg_hba.conf to contain these setting:

local all all md5
hostall all 127.0.0.1/32md5
hostall all 192.168.0.0/24 md5
hostall all 192.168.0.102/32md5

on using pgadmin III on windows to access my server, I get these error
messages in postgresql logs:

2011-12-30 22:45:21 EST FATAL: no pg_hba.conf entry for host "192.168.0.102",

2011-12-30 22:46:24 EST FATAL: no pg_hba.conf entry for host "192.168.0.102",
user "postgres", database "postgres", SSL off

I have tried to tunnel the 5432 port from my server (ip address:
192.168.0.50) to the workstation (192.168.0.102) and it result in the
same error:

2011-12-30 22:48:19 EST FATAL: no pg_hba.conf entry for host "192.168.0.50",
user "postgres", database "postgres", SSL on

2011-12-30 22:48:40 EST FATAL: no pg_hba.conf entry for host "192.168.0.50",
user "postgres", database "postgres", SSL off

on the other hands, using php pg admin on the server work fine. I did
configure postgres so it listen to any address (localhost in this case
and 192.168.0.50) but for one reason or another, postgresql doesn't
tcp/ip connexions.

[Bug 910299] [NEW] can any one help me get my freedom.

2011-12-30 Thread motorcyclemessiah
Public bug reported:

i think my computer is hacked by the government or organized crime as i
am a human rights campaigner for human rights and political
representation for addicts and both these groups fear me because of
their part in the systematic denial of the right to self determination
for addicts who are mere property of the state .Since the government
believes it owns them and their right to make up their own minds.ALSO IF
I try to put encryption on my Internet it just stops working till I take
it off and the package managers all fail to download ant i virus
software so I am always vulnerable to them disabling my computer or
things they consider a threat as my logs will show all web cam programs
stop working within a few hour of installation and videos up loaded to
you tube seem to have the sound deleted or interference inserted .and a
lot of my emails are returned or not sent .My cd rom is currently giving
trouble have put in six different ones with four different ribbons yet
the copmputer fails to find them or refuses to read them and wont
install from them or burn to them .it is making me suicidal how cruelly
I am treat for trying to save peoples children from addictive
drugs.regards the motorcyclemessiah+the junkies against crime liberation

[Bug 531190] Re: upower (devkit-power) reporting bad data when AC cable is unplugged

2011-12-30 Thread zac.roesch
David Tombs: This battery is brand new, though it started with an older
battery that could have been bad. At this point, I won't know, though it
would be nice to have two batteries.

Part of the irregularity I experience with the bug is that sometimes the
machine will work fine until, as others have mentioned, the lid is
closed of it goes to sleep. Once it's woken up, crit bat.

Thinking about reinstalling, because wth. I'd like to know if that would
be a reasonable solution before I create a lot of extra work for myself
(and may still end up with the same problem).

Has there been any solid progress with this yet?

And happy new year.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, I am closing it because the bug has been fixed
in the latest development version of Ubuntu - Oneiric Ocelot.

This is a significant bug in Ubuntu. If you need a fix for the bug in
previous versions of Ubuntu, please do steps 1 and 2 of the SRU
Procedure [1] to bring the need to a developer's attention.
