[Bug 859539] Re: usb-creator-gtk fails to install bootloader: "System policy prevents installing the bootloader"
Hmm. Still fails for me with --allow-system-internal. This time I ran from the command line: usb-creator-gtk --iso=Ubuntu11.10/ubuntu-11.10-desktop-i386.iso --allow-system-internal No logging appeared on stderr (or stdout for that matter). The command did not complete until I had entered the authenticating password. The only logging that I've found is in /var/log/authlog Jan 8 02:04:50 redemption polkitd(authority=local): Operator of unix-session:/org/freedesktop/ConsoleKit/Session2 successfully authenticated as unix-user:boss to gain TEMPORARY authorization for action com.ubuntu.usbcreator.format for unix-process:3567:733366 [/usr/bin/python /usr/bin/usb-creator-gtk --iso=Ubuntu11.10/ubuntu-11.10-desktop-i386.iso --allow-system-internal] (owned by unix-user:boss) Jan 8 02:18:10 redemption gnome-screensaver-dialog: gkr-pam: unlocked login keyring Jan 8 02:19:02 redemption polkitd(authority=local): Operator of unix-session:/org/freedesktop/ConsoleKit/Session2 successfully authenticated as unix-user:boss to gain TEMPORARY authorization for action com.ubuntu.usbcreator.bootloader for unix-process:3567:733366 [/usr/bin/python /usr/bin/usb-creator-gtk --iso=Ubuntu11.10/ubuntu-11.10-desktop-i386.iso --allow-system-internal] (owned by unix-user:boss) There were two authorizations: one for formatting the USB drive and one for the bootloader. I don't imagine that this is relevant, but the Oneric system I'm using is AMD64 but the system I'm trying to create is i386 (as is the .iso). Interestingly, I seem to have a parentless "/usr/bin/python /usr/share /usb-creator/usb-creator-helper" process running as root. I'll kill it and try again. Hmmm. This time it seems to work. [Bug 606491] Re: start: Job is already running: anacron
The description of the --quiet option says: "Reduces output of all commands to errors only." Anacron not starting a second instance because another anacron is already running IS an error, as we expect the start command to successfully start anacron. We expect anacron to do the periodic jobs reliably. And if some job is hung (as in the case of apt-key in my case) we need some notification about the error. I see a couple of solutions: - Add an option to anacron that makes it check when it was last run and only run it again if a configuration amount of time has passed since the last run. If the time has not passed, silently quit. - Make anacron execute all jobs in background and quit once all jobs have been started. Would need some helper process to record and report output of the jobs via mail. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/606491 Title: start: Job is already running: anacron To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/anacron/+bug/606491/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 913356] [NEW] Crashes X server when showing Firefox bookmarks menu
Public bug reported: I use KDE 4.7.4 with the global menu Plasma applet. I was using Firefox. I opened the global menu. I hovered over the Bookmarks menu. After a moment, instead of displaying the menu, X crashed, taking everything with it, returning me to the KDM login screen. This is really bad. All I have to do is accidentally hover over the bookmarks menu and X instantly crashes, taking my entire X session down with it. This is a major data-loss bug. Perhaps it is caused by the size of the bookmarks menu. Although I don't really use it anymore, since I use tags and the "awesome bar" instead, it has 1,986 items in it at the moment--sometimes the default in Firefox sticks new bookmarks in there without asking. (On my other system I moved all the items out of the menu into Unsorted, but good ol' Firefox Sync doesn't move bookmarks when you move them.) As a workaround I will try moving all the items out of there--but this still should not crash X and everything else. [Bug 859539] Re: usb-creator-gtk fails to install bootloader: "System policy prevents installing the bootloader"
This bug affects me. I invoked usb-creator-gtk without knowing that was its name: I used "Startup Disk Creator" from the "Dash Home" thing on my Unity desktop (Oneiric + updates). It would be wise to keep names consistent. The thing failed after 10 minutes of copying files to the thumb drive. This makes retries quite tedious. I also hit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/usb- creator/+bug/884008 I don't see any log. Nowhere is there an explanation of how or why to give Startup Disk Creator the --allow-system-internal. Certainly not in the broken help button. Even usb-creator-gtk(8) doesn't explain the flag well. What is a "system internal device"??? This is very unfriendly. I wonder how many users can even find there way here? I will attach a couple of screen shots showing windows left after this failure. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/859539 Title: usb-creator-gtk fails to install bootloader: "System policy prevents installing the bootloader" To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/usb-creator/+bug/859539/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 868034] Re: Huawei E220 can't connect on Ubuntu 11.10
I'm pleased to see the recent progress being made by Mark and Aleksander (comments #102 - #104), though not happy that the priority still remains listed as "low". Meanwhile last night I managed to locate syslog file entries from both Maverick (ver 0.4) and from Ocelot (ver 0.5) for plugging in and trying to log-in on my Huawei E220, and I'm attaching the Maverick one here. I'll attach the Ocelot one for comparison in the next post. These differ from Mark's examples in that they show kernel entries as well as MM entries, so perhaps there could be an additional clue there. I'd love to try MM 0.4 in Ocelot and see what happens, but sorry I don't feel I'm quite up-to-speed enough myself to do that without risking an error that cuts me off completely! ** Attachment added: "syslog from Live Maverick" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager/+bug/868034/+attachment/2662359/+files/mmMavsyslog -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/868034 Title: Huawei E220 can't connect on Ubuntu 11.10 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/network-manager/+bug/868034/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 803943] Re: compiz consuming a lot of cpu
Compiz is not a "window manager" in the traditional X11 sense. Technically unity-window-decorator is the window manager in Ubuntu. Compiz is a compositing window manager, which despite sounding similar is very different. Compiz is responsible not only for the desktop effects, but for rendering every pixel of every window on the screen. All rendering is proxied through compiz so it can apply any effects to any part of the screen. So that's why compiz uses some CPU while any part of the screen is changing. But I'm sure compiz could do better, which is what this bug is all about. Certainly an unchanging desktop should result in compiz using zero CPU. And there are probably more parts of compiz that can be optimized to use less CPU.
