[Bug 60764] Re: Large file transfer gives error: Corrupted MAC on input

2012-02-13 Thread Whit Blauvelt
I realize this is closed. Just adding a few notes from my own experience
since the discussion here has been useful to me. In my case the error
shows up in running ssh -Y to a second system, and then starting
dosemu on the remote system (which will tunnel to my desktop). The
remote system has an Intel e1000e PCI-E NIC. The local system has a
Marvell PCI-E card.

sudo ethtool -K eth1 rx off tx off on the local (Marvell) box avoids
the error, but leaves me wondering if I'm just tolerating corruption.
Does OpenSSH have its own error correction protocol for safety here? The
remote box had had some problems that seemed associated with a different
NIC (an old LinkSys tulip), but that had been a second card on a
different interface, seemingly fixed by swapping in an Intel card. The
remote system has tested find in memtest86 and other stress tests. But
memtest86 doesn't hit 100% of RAM. Makes me wonder if there's RAM going
bad in the range assigned to PCI cards that's simply outside of the
range memtest86 can see - and that's certainly outside the range that
can be tested while booted into Linux.

experience I only have problems using Protein Data Bank files (pdb). I use
gedit all the time and i work with pdb files almost all the time, hence now it
is almost impossible to work. I would really appreciate if someone comes with a

2012-02-13 Thread David Biesack
I guess my problem was not running Gnome3 - I was running a bare Xsession
session with openbox window manager.
I logged out, then logged in with a Gnome3 Unity session, and update-manager is
working OK for me
and downloading and applying changes. So for me the but is that update-manager
does not work in
an Xsession (when I ran it there, I never got a password prompt for the sudo
behavior).

(I still don't know why 'sudo apt-get update' failed as that should not
need any gui components)

[Bug 898373] Re: fsck.ext3: Device or resource busy while trying to open /dev/xvda2

2012-02-13 Thread Stefan Bader
Hm, when I look at /etc/init/cloud-init-local.conf and */cloud-init.conf
they seem to say start on mounted MOUNTPOINT=/. So I'd somehow expect
mountall to be finished with / at that point. Still the output of cloud-
init and mountall seem to intermix often. As if they are executed around
the same time...

[Bug 931542] [NEW] using the gcc-4.7.0 prerelease as packaged by Fedora Rawhide, there is a segfault in the program that results from compiling sha512-hash.c

2012-02-13 Thread Zooko Wilcox-O'Hearn
Public bug reported:

This doesn't *actually* affect Ubuntu yet, at least not until Ubuntu
upgrades to gcc 4.7.0 and only if this bug is still present by then.
But, I want to link together bug reports in various issue trackers and
aggregate them in launchpad, and the only way I can do that currently is
by falsely reporting an issue in Ubuntu.

[Bug 725367] Re: primes returns composites

2012-02-13 Thread Alexander A. Maly
Thank you for assistance!
That seems to be output from an older version (before rev. 9) of the program.
How get you the code? I tried bzr branch lp:primes/ from a clean place, built
via make, run it as

./primes64 775773 775787

and it prints:

start=775773, stop=775787, mode=0x0, loglevel=1
totally 0 primes, last one is 775773
sum is 0 + 2^64 * 0

Or maybe you built it in some unusual environment, like mingw?

[Bug 475327] Re: qemu -net nic -net tap does not start due to qemu-ifXXX scripts

2012-02-13 Thread Serge Hallyn
Presumably the occasional desktop user would use virt manager which will
by default attach a veth nic to virbr0?

The reason this bug was raised is that /etc/qemu-ifup assumes the
default route has been bridged.

For the moment, we always create a virbr0, so perhaps qemu-ifup should
attach tap0 to virbr0? In fact it is quite easy to check whether the
nic on the default route is a bridge. And/or perhaps the switch should
be configurable in /etc/default/qemu-kvm?

So /etc/default/qemu-kvm could contain:

# Uncomment this if you want to specify a bridge to use for tap devices
# TAPBR=virbr0

Then /etc/qemu-ifup could read:

#!/bin/sh

[ -f /etc/default/qemu-kvm ] . /etc/default/qemu-kvm
if [ -z $TAPBR ]; then
switch=$(ip route list | awk '/^default / { print $5 }')
if [ -z ${TAPBR} -o ! -d /sys/class/net/${TAPBR}/bridge ]; then
switch=virbr0
fi
fi
ifconfig $1 0.0.0.0 up
brctl addif ${switch} $1

[Bug 60764] Re: Large file transfer gives error: Corrupted MAC on input

2012-02-13 Thread Whit Blauvelt
Here's helpful background:
https://blogs.oracle.com/janp/entry/ssh_messages_code_bad_packet

It doesn't look to me like turning off rx and tx should in any way
lessen OpenSSH's resistance to corruption, so should be safe as far as
this goes. The other side of this is that it looks like somehow having
rx and/or tx on is producing corruption, from OpenSSH's POV. Whether
that's driver, or card, or system RAM implicated, I've no clue.

there was a ubiquity deb with the right version listed for the live CD.
On closer inspection it was an _all.deb file - I always overlook

[Bug 922037] Re: reduce brightness key freezes system

2012-02-13 Thread Herton R. Krzesinski
Ok, so this is the summary about what we found so far regarding this
bug:

- The freeze happens only on x86_64, because it has the interrupt
remapping/x2apic and it is enabled, compared to the 32 bits version.
- The freeze only happens with x2apic and interrupt remapping. Interrupt
remapping and xapic works, only with x2apic mode enabled the freeze happens.

[Bug 931548] [NEW] Show default HUD icon for Desktop (nautilus) menus

2012-02-13 Thread Paul Sladen
Public bug reported:

(Filed in summary on behalf of Gord Allott requirement).

This is for HUD, so we present the menu items of nautilus when you have
the desktop focused, normally we show whatever icon the application
uses, but in the case of the desktop, it does not have an icon, so we
need a kind of default icon for the Ubuntu Desktop.

The Nautilus icon is not quite appropriate. One possibility would be to
use:

  /usr/share/icons/ubuntu-mono-dark/places/128/user-desktop.png

but abstracted via a new symlink such as hud-default-desktop which can
be updated independently to the code.

[Bug 931437] Re: gnome-session-quit does nothing

2012-02-13 Thread hakaishi
Does dbus-send --print-reply --system --dest=org.freedesktop.ConsoleKit
/org/freedesktop/ConsoleKit/Manager
org.freedesktop.ConsoleKit.Manager.Stop work for you? If it doesn't, it
is a problem with ConsoleKit if it does, then the problem could lie in
the package gnome-session-bin. Especially if gnome-session-quit also
does nothing when the --no-prompt option is used.

[Bug 728745] Re: [nvidia, 7300, 7400] display freeze when using unity desktop

2012-02-13 Thread Dave Vree
Good News! The new nVidia beta driver 295.17 works! I tried it under
oneric x86 32 bit with a GE Force 7400 Go card that has been blacklisted
for Unity 3D and compiz for some time.

I installed the beta version via the xorg-edgers ppa here:

https://launchpad.net/~xorg-
edgers/+archive/ppa?field.series_filter=oneiric

This is the first driver from nVidia that has worked with 3D in oneric
for me.

[Bug 931558] [NEW] Songs without cover art should have generic music icons

2012-02-13 Thread Satchit Bhogle
Public bug reported:

OS: Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric stable 32-bit
Application: unity 4.28.0, rhythmbox-scope 0.1-0~12~oneiric1

See attached image.
I have a number of songs that don't have cover art. They are represented by
ugly blank file icons (the screenshot shows the Faenza-Ambiance icon set, but
this can be seen with ubuntu-mono-dark as well). Instead, such songs which
don't have cover art should be represented by a music icon, possibly the icon
for MP3s. This also more clearly communicates that these are music files.

Albums without cover art should also have a separate icon, to
differentiate them from songs.

This has been tested with both Banshee and the experimental package for
Rhythmbox by Mark Tully.

dbus-send --print-reply --system ... works.

[Bug 880010] Re: Empty space in tray after every suspend.

2012-02-13 Thread Ogilvierothchild
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 846878 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/846878

This workaround doesn't work for me. I tried not using either xfce4
-power-manager or nm-applet, and the amount of space was reduced but the
bug is still there.

[Bug 911059] Re: Intel wireless randomly drops connection

2012-02-13 Thread Joseph Salisbury
Hi Jono,

The kernel build issue is resolved. I created a set of test kernels, which are
available at:
http://people.canonical.com/~jsalisbury/lp911059/

This kernel is the fist bisected kernel between 3.0 and 3.1rc2 . There
will be a few iterations of test kernels required to identify the commit
that caused the regression.

Can you test this kernel out and report back if the issue still exists
or not?

Notes for the bisect:
This test kernel is a build up to commit:
45b583b10a8b438b970e95a7d1d4db22c9e35004

This test kernel also included the patches for the following commits:
277c5f27a2c86a9a733c0ec0f6a9b1032dfa3e15
36a26c69b4c70396ef569c3452690fba0c1dec08
