[Bug 935574] Re: ABI incompatability in libsword8 (xiphos segfaults)

2012-03-27 Thread ibidem
As a temporary workaround, I have libsword 1.6.1 in my foreports ppa
(ppa:ibid-ag/oldgtk1)
Note that that PPA is used for a number of packages that are older than
"current" or have been dropped from Ubuntu;
you may want to pin libsword, but probably not the PPA.

[Bug 527157] Re: Brightness controls skips Levels.

2012-03-27 Thread Dmitriy Geels
Oh yeah! #24 is really dirty one!

But it gave me a clue, how this bug should be fixed:
Patching StepUp/StepDown handlers is very bad practice, because these methods
may be called by some other applications. We need to prevent calls to these
methods depending on some parameter.

The problem itself: bios changes brightness on keypress and reports acpi
keypress event, instead of just reporting event (this might be fixable
in DSDT), then some process handles this event and issues dbus calls to
org.gnome.SettingsDaemon.Power.Screen.StepUp/StepDown methods. Then
g-p-m changes brightness too; g-p-m has no ways to determine, whether it
should change brightness when handling StepUp/StepDown dbus calls, or
not. Neither 'some process' do.

The solution, how I see it: find code, which handles acpi keypresses
(that's not g-p-m, g-s-d may be?) and add user-changeable option there
to disable acpi brightness keypresses handle (e.g. gconf parameter).

[Bug 966867] [NEW] debsign --debs-dir is broken due to incorrectly added quotes

2012-03-27 Thread Steve Beattie
Public bug reported:

debsign from devscripts in precise has broken the --debs-dir option:

  $ ls -ld ../source
  drwxrwxr-x 2 steve steve 4096 Mar 27 23:12 ../source
  $ debsign --debs-dir ../source
 debsign: could not find directory "../source"!

strace'ing debsign shows it trying to do:

  15372 stat("\"../source\"", 0x7fffbbc3bba0) = -1 ENOENT (No such file
or directory)

(notice the extra \" in there.)

Looking at the source, when handling the option, it does the following:

--debs-dir)
shift
opt_debsdir="$(echo \"${1%/}\" | sed -e 's%/\+%/%g')"

note that this is slightly different than how the default directory is
generated

  DEBRELEASE_DEBS_DIR="`echo \"$DEBRELEASE_DEBS_DIR\" | sed -e
's%/\+%/%g; s%\(.\)/$%\1%;'`"

in that the latter uses shell backticks rather than $() to run
subcommands. This will behave differently, at least under dash:

$ cat dash.sh
#!/bin/sh

FOO="$(echo \"foo bar\")"
BAR="`echo \"foo bar\"`"

$ sh -xe dash.sh
+ echo "foo bar"
+ FOO="foo bar"
+ echo foo bar
+ BAR=foo bar

Bash behaves similarly. Changing the opt_debsdir definition line to the
following:

  opt_debsdir="$(echo "${1%/}" | sed -e 's%/\+%/%g')"

(i.e. removing the backslash escaping of ") causes things to work as
expected.

Just WASTED 30 minutes trying to capture a screenshot for another bug on

Talk about making simple things difficult for people - what happens if
someone doesn't have sound and they just keep hitting "Print Screen"
waiting for something to appear to be "Pasted" as has been the norm
for... for for...  since forever!

[Bug 966814] Re: compiz hangs on startup in XWindowEvent() from PrivateScreen::initDisplay()

2012-03-27 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Actually this looks like it might be an unavoidable consequence of
constantly starting/stopping/crashing from a different VT to X.

Re: [Bug 966765] [NEW] Precise's version of zsh stat()s everything when you run your first command.

2012-03-27 Thread Axel Beckert
Hi,

Alec Warner wrote:

That's wrong. The most recent release is 4.3.17 (24-Feb-2012, a
regression fix for 4.3.16) which is also the one in Debian Testing.

> Either backport the fix or pull in 4.3.16.

There is already a Feature Freeze exception request for 4.3.17
somewhere on Launchpad. I suspect this can be regarded as duplicate
(with adding one more reason) for the FFe.

Actually, the diskstats plugin does itemize read and write, per
device, if you click on the top-level graph. So iostat_ios does truly
seem redundant, while producing graphs that don't look as nice and
aren't per-device.

[Bug 966845] Re: lucid->precise upgrade wants to remove ubuntu-desktop

2012-03-27 Thread Martin Pitt
Related to this:

Broken python-pyatspi2:i386 Conflicts on python-pyatspi [ i386 ] <
1.30.1-0ubuntu1 -> 1.32.0-1ubuntu1 > ( universe/libs )
  Considering python-pyatspi:i386 1 as a solution to python-pyatspi2:i386 1
  Holding Back python-pyatspi2:i386 rather than change python-pyatspi:i386

Luke says that python-pyatspi2 provides the same API as python-pyatspi,
so we can add a Provides: there.

libatk-adaptor does not strictly Provides: at-spi in a technical sense,
though. The only remaining reverse dependency of at-spi is gok, whose
at-spi2 replacement caribou is not yet deemed good enough for general
consumption (but will hopefully be in a year when lucid desktop goes out
of support). Luke says gok should be removed from precise as it's
practically uninstallable anyway (the old at-spi stack cannot be co-
installed with at-spi2). libatk-adaptor provides a similar concept as
at-spi, though: providing an ATK module for GTK, so it would not be
entirely wrong to add a Provides.

[Bug 966845] Re: lucid->precise upgrade wants to remove ubuntu-desktop

2012-03-27 Thread Martin Pitt
It cannot install libatk-adaptor:

Broken ubuntu-desktop:i386 Depends on libatk-adaptor [ i386 ] < none ->
2.3.92-1 > ( misc )
  Considering libatk-adaptor:i386 1 as a solution to ubuntu-desktop:i386 1
  Removing ubuntu-desktop:i386 rather than change libatk-adaptor:i386

because the old at-spi gets a much higher score:

Broken libatk-adaptor:i386 Conflicts on at-spi [ i386 ] < 1.30.1-0ubuntu1 ->
1.32.0-1ubuntu1 > ( universe/gnome )
  Considering at-spi:i386 9 as a solution to libatk-adaptor:i386 1
  Holding Back libatk-adaptor:i386 rather than change at-spi:i386

[Bug 886946] Re: KDM opens at 7th virtual console despite of configuration.

2012-03-27 Thread mkfs
I agree with LStranger, it is changes like this that make me sour on the
Ubuntus. Change the default display manager, sure, change the default
VTY, fine, but don't reduce configurability with each release -- if I
wanted a *NIX like that I'd be running OS X.

Complaining aside, this appears to be a problem with the integration of
Plymouth.

Grub has the vt.handoff parameter which allows the user to specify which
virtual console the bootsplash and such are expected to run on. The
plymouthd program takes a --tty option that allows it to run on a
virtual console specified by the user.

The Plymouth upstart job in /etc/init/plymouth.conf allows the tty
parameter to be set (e.g. --tty /dev/vcs9), but according to the header
of the file (and to the results of experimentation) this conf file is
not used at boot -- Plymouth is started from initramfs.

This means that it might be possible to change the VTY by rebuilding the
initrd, but I haven't tried that (yet ... waiting for the next XOrg
Intel video driver crash, which happens about every 10 days).

In regards to KDM, it has a config file which allows it to be run on a
specified virtual console -- but these options are ignored if Plymouth
passes it a virtual console to open on (I forget the mechanism --
has_vty or somesuch).

Suggestions for fixing:

a) A configuration file for plymouth that is used in the initrd and
allows options to plymouthd to be set

b) Have initrd respect the vt.handoff option instead of hard-coding the
virtual terminal

[Bug 933751] Re: lucid->precise upgrade - pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages

2012-03-27 Thread Martin Pitt
There has been no response in a month, and without the apt log file we
cannot go ahead with this. Since then we did several upgrade fixes, so
either the problem has been fixed, or precise changed enough that we
need a new log file anyway. Thank you for your report!

[Bug 964990] Re: [Ubuntu 12.04] partitions with ext2 are NEVER cleanly unmounted on shutdown/reboot

2012-03-27 Thread Christian Niemeyer
Having a little lack of time, I linked this bug report at
forum.ubuntuusers.de and other places. I guess someone might take a look
at it.

And I will test again with another installation on another system, this
time with 12.04 (32bit), as soon as possible. Maybe something in the
installation process went wrong, however the filesystem should be fine
after all those (very long) checks.

[Bug 966524] Re: control center window is not manually resizeable

2012-03-27 Thread Rick Spencer
I believe that the bug report is about compiz. The problem being that
the window manager should permit *any* window to be maximized via a key
combination regardless of wether the window has maximize/restore
buttons. This is, therefore, a system wide facet of compiz.

** Summary changed:

- control center window is not manually resizeable
+ it should be possible to maximize any window

** Summary changed:

- it should be possible to maximize any window
+ it should be possible to maximize any window using (using F8)

[Bug 966734] Re: nfs4 allows writes by incorrect users

2012-03-27 Thread Toby Corkindale
/etc/idmapd.conf looks like this at the moment. (I've also tried with
Domain set to another value, or with domain commented out so that imapd
can assign a default automatically, which is the default in the version
of nfs-utils that ships in 12.04)

[General]

Verbosity = 5
Pipefs-Directory = /var/lib/nfs/rpc_pipefs
Domain = localdomain

[Mapping]

Nobody-User = nobody
Nobody-Group = nogroup

[Translation]

Method = nsswitch

[Bug 966734] Re: nfs4 allows writes by incorrect users

2012-03-27 Thread Toby Corkindale
Hi Steve,
I am not using GSSAPI-authed shares here -- just plain IP-based auth.

Eg.
/srv/nfs192.168.10.0/255.255.255.0(rw,fsid=0,async,no_subtree_check)
/srv/nfs/archive192.168.10.0/255.255.255.0(rw,async,no_subtree_check)
