[Bug 1003216] Re: package linux-image-3.2.0-24-generic 3.2.0-24.39 failed to install/upgrade: il sottoprocesso vecchio script di post-installation ha restituito lo stato di errore 17

2012-05-23 Thread Mauro Catarzi
I have always to do the same workaround to install the new version of a kernel:
sudo mv /initrd.img /initrd.img.vej
sudo apt-get install
sudo rm initrd.img.vej.

The issue is not resolved, and I mark as "Confirmed" the bug.

[Bug 1003595] Re: resolvconf 1.63ubuntu14 upgrade error: /etc/resolv.conf isn't a symlink, not doing anything

2012-05-23 Thread Stéphane Graber
Per discussion on IRC having /etc/resolv.conf be a static file instead
of a symlink to ../run/resolvconf/resolv.conf is wrong and is likely a
leftover from an earlier workaround. This isn't a resolvconf bug.

Moving the bug against Ubuntu itself and assigning it to Ben Howard to
fix the cloud images build scripts.

[Bug 1003613] [NEW] Merge fuse 2.9.0-1

2012-05-23 Thread Michael Bienia
Public bug reported:

fuse (2.9.0-1ubuntu1) quantal; urgency=low

  * Merge with Debian unstable (lp: #xxx). Remaining changes:
- Install ulockmgr_server in fuse-udeb.
- Install fusermount with 4755 permissions (remaining change from
  "Dynamic foreground user access").
- Only change the ownership or mode of /etc/fuse.conf in postinst on
  initial installation.
- Don't install the udev rules; we require the fuse module to be
built-in, and mountall handles mounting /sys/fs/fuse/connections.

[Bug 973096] Re: Nvidia driver causes xorg crash

Not just Nvidia driver, also open sourced driver has problem. It
happened once with my ATI too. What can i say more - 12.04 is the most
buggy release. Even with Unity 2D i had some problems but after all
Unity 2D is useless for long work. Canonical can't complain about people
switching back to Windows or anothe distro. Don't take me wrong - Ubuntu
is fantastic and loved Unity but this bugs with crashing Xorg are so
important. I lost lot works and time with bug reporting... and really
don't understand why you guys started make 12.10 when you don't have
finished 12.04!

[Bug 997728] Re: Ubuntu port of acroread degrades images (works on Win7)

2012-05-23 Thread jimav
New cups-filters does NOT fix the problem. Images are still degraded
when printing via acroread, but not degraded using lpr.

(Tested cups-filters 1.0.18-0ubuntu0.1 and acroread 9.4.7-1oneiric1 on
Xubuntu 12.04)

This isn't very surprising, since the old cups-filters did not show the
problem either when using lpr.The evidence STRONGLY points to
something in acroread specifically, since both acroread and lpr
presumably use the same CUPS printing back-end.

** Description changed:

- Certain images are substantially degraded when printing.
+ Certain images are substantially degraded when printing via acroread
+ (but not degraded when using lpr).

The problem only occurs with Acrobat Reader on Ubuntu,
not xpdf or Acrobat Reader on Windows 7 (using the same printer and input
PDF).
So there is something wrong with Acrobat Reader on Ubuntu specifically (or
maybe any Linux).

The printed image appears darkened or the available grey-scale
resolution is lesssened. The test image (attached) is blueish and the
printing was on a monochrome laser printer (hp3030), so the problem
might be related to mapping colors to greyscale.

The PDF was created by exporting from Libre Office Writer with PDF/A and
  "Lossless" image compression.

Here are the exact versions of Acrobat Reader I tested:

  Windows 7 (32-bit): Acrobat Reader 9.5.0 [works]
  Ubuntu (both 64-bit & 32-bit): Acrobat Reader "9.5.1 03/07/2012" [image
degraded when printed]

To print only odd (or other selected) pages, for duplexing:

Re: [Bug 991977] Re: Ubuntu 12.04 hangs on shutdown

2012-05-23 Thread Stephen Helden
I'm now running kernal release 3.4.1.1 and the NVIDIA accelerated
graphics (post release) update driver. Now, the Unbuntu "shut-down"
option works as expected. Previously it worked exactly like the
Unbuntu "Log Out" option.

Thank you for your bug report, you list several issues which are each
duplicate bugs so I can't mark the bug as duplicate of one other ticket,
marking it as invalid instead, the gimp issue is bug #995916 and a SRU
is being working with a fix, the keepass case has been mentioned in
other bugs (I don't find the numbers atm though)

[Bug 940743] Re: CVE-2012-0879

2012-05-23 Thread John Johansen
** Description changed:

- With CLONE_IO, copy_io() increments both ioc->refcount and
- ioc->nr_tasks. However exit_io_context() only decrements ioc->refcount
- if ioc->nr_tasks reaches 0.  With CLONE_IO, parent's
- io_context->nr_tasks is incremented, but never decremented whenever
- copy_process() fails afterwards, which prevents exit_io_context() from
- calling IO schedulers exit functions. An unprivileged local user could
- use these flaws cause denial of service.
+ The I/O implementation for block devices in the Linux kernel before
+ 2.6.33 does not properly handle the CLONE_IO feature, which allows local
+ users to cause a denial of service (I/O instability) by starting
+ multiple processes that share an I/O context.

[Bug 1003595] Re: resolvconf 1.63ubuntu14 upgrade error: /etc/resolv.conf isn't a symlink, not doing anything

2012-05-23 Thread Stéphane Graber
It's not a bug, resolvconf is just letting you know that it won't update the
file as it's not a symlink, nothing wrong there.
I might agree that showing "Error" might be a bit excessive and that we might
want to replace that by "Warning".

The problem, if we can consider it to be one is that one of the cloud
image tools is replacing the /etc/resolv.conf symlink by a static file
instead of updating /etc/network/interface with the DNS information.
That's certainly allowed and is the right way of disabling resolvconf,
but I don't think it's a good idea for the official Ubuntu images to do
that, we should instead make sure the cloud scripts use the right
resolvconf hook to provide their configuration.

[Bug 973096] Re: Nvidia driver causes xorg crash

For those who don't wan to break there package management, I have downloaded
the 290.10 driver from here:
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers/290.10-0ubuntu1/+build/3091666
Changed it dependency to "xorg-video-abi-11" and recreated the deb file.

Use "sudo dpkg -i nvidia-current_290.10-0ubuntu1_precise_amd64.deb" to
downgrade to it.

[Bug 1000272] Re: Eclipse crashes at startup in Ubuntu 12.04

2012-05-23 Thread Derek
TLDR: dpkg -P libswt-gtk-3.5-java libswt-gtk-3.5-jni fixed (plus clean
uninstall/reinstall and precautionary clearing of ~/.eclipse)

14:47 < nthykier> +ii libswt-gtk-3.5-java 3.5.1+versionbump-5ubuntu1
Standard Widget Toolkit for GTK+ Java library
14:47 < nemo> that bad?
14:48 < nthykier> Could be; which alternative is providing
/usr/share/java/swt.jar ? (ls -l /etc/alternatives/swt.jar should do)
14:48 < nemo> lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 31 Nov 9 2010 /etc/alternatives/swt.jar
-> /usr/lib/java/swt-gtk-3.5.1.jar
14:49 < nemo> huh. alternatives does libs too? I would think those symlinks
would be in /usr/lib
14:49 < nthykier> I am not entirely sure what is up with that use of
alternatives, but personally I do not like it
14:50 < nthykier> It also caused bugs like #670756
14:50 < nthykier> try to uninstall the old swt (or update the alternative to
point to the new version), purge ~/.eclipse and restart
14:52 < nemo> hm
14:52 < nemo> not really too sure how to do either...
14:52 < nemo> ~/.eclipse has been purged many times already :)
14:52 < nemo> when I check synaptic, only one version of swt-gtk is listed as
available
14:52 < nthykier> "dpkg -P libswt-gtk-3.5-java libswt-gtk-3.5-jni" will purge
them

[Bug 1003602] Re: Re-inserted MMC not reconized after removel.

2012-05-23 Thread Joseph Salisbury
Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer
to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest
v3.4kernel[1] (Not a kernel in the daily directory). Once you've tested
the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag(Only
that one tag, please leave the other tags). This can be done by clicking
on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the
bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following
tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag:
'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot,
please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as
"Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

2012-05-23 Thread matteo sisti sette
I have the same issue and I don't see any subdirectory belonging to

/var/lib/dkms/vboxhost$ ls -la

drwxr-xr-x 7 root root 4096 May 23 20:06 ..

So VirtualBox developer say it's a bug in Ubuntu, and Ubuntu developers say
it's a bug in VirtualBox..

[Bug 978583] Re: package fuse-utils 2.8.4-1.1ubuntu4 failed to install/upgrade: ErrorMessage: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2012-05-23 Thread Ubuntu Foundation's Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. The version of update-initramfs that you likely have
installed is unable to work on a persistent usb stick. You can resolve
this issue by upgrading the version of casper on your system. This can
be done via the commands:

sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install casper

Then performing the software update or installation that you were
originally trying. If this does not resolve your bug please set its
status back to New. Thanks in advance!

[Bug 660346]

2012-05-23 Thread Ubuntu Foundation's Bug Bot
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
even better. Examing the bug report it appears that you are using
Ubuntu in a persistent mode on Live Media and that you have completely
filled your /cdrom file system. When using persistent mode your root
(/) filesystem is a combination of a persistence file and the /cdrom
file system which really contains /. It is possible that you may be
able to free some space using the command 'apt-cache clean' to remove
packages from your local cache. However, you may want to allocate more
space to your real root partition.

[Bug 937522] Re: rdp clipboard sync doesn't work anymore.

2012-05-23 Thread urusha
Actually, for now there is no full-working RDP client in precise:
1) vinagre... well, just try it - it's unconfigurable and unusable at all.
2) no tsclient in repositories (can be installed
3) rdesktop - has no gui (except vinagre), and has problems with keyboard
layouts (that could be fixed by manipulating keymaps ) and clipboard too (when
it's in fullscreen - I can't find a fix for it)
4) remmina and xfreerdp - except other things mentioned earlier here, have
another serious bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/remmina/+bug/1000356 (can anyone
confirm it?)

All these things stop us from migrating to new ubuntu LTS. I think all
these should be fixed and uploaded to current LTS and I'll be glad to
test any suggested patches, like many others here, I think.

Thanks.

[Bug 858569]

[Bug 1003592] Re: terminal keeps crashing

2012-05-23 Thread matteo sisti sette
After this, I rebooted, and the next boot didn't succeed.
When the Ubuntu flash screen appeared and I was supposed to type the password,
it hanged and didn't respond (even the cursor stopped blinking, though the
mouse cursor moved)
I hit ctrl+F1 to open a virtual terminal, I entered the user name and password,
and even the virtual terminal login didn't succeed.

So I forced hardware power off and booted the system again and now
everything seems to work fine.

Please tell me which log files I can upload before it's too late.

[Bug 1003595] [NEW] resolvconf 1.63ubuntu14 upgrade error: /etc/resolv.conf isn't a symlink, not doing anything

2012-05-23 Thread K. Deniz Ogut
Public bug reported:

Three days ago I lauched an EC2 Ubuntu Precise micro instance on Amazon
Web Service. AMI: ubuntu/images/ebs/ubuntu-
precise-12.04-i386-server-20120424 (ami-e7e8d393)

This is my very first server experience so I'm going slow and reading
and observing the system. During this three days I didn't install any
new packages other than appyling four batches of updates. Some of them
were security updates, some were not; some were kernel updates, some
were not. My var/log/apt/history.log is attached.

As a result:

# uname -a
Linux [some-internal-IP] 3.2.0-24-virtual #38-Ubuntu SMP Tue May 1 17:00:51 UTC
2012 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

If it might be useful:

# ls -l /etc/resolv.conf
-r--r--r-- 1 root root 91 May 23 09:59 /etc/resolv.conf

# cat /etc/resolv.conf
domain eu-west-1.compute.internal
search eu-west-1.compute.internal
nameserver 172.16.0.23

I didn't do any configuration to the default system of any kind by
myself. Up till now I just play with the basic commands such as whoami,
top, ls, cd etc. and to observe the update/upgrade processes.

As you can see from the attached file, my fourh and last upgrade is from
resolvconf 1.63ubuntu11 to resolvconf 1.63ubuntu14 and the upgrade
resulted with the error: "resolvconf: Error: /etc/resolv.conf isn't a
symlink, not doing anything." What I get from connection up to that
error is attached.

I searched some on the Web and figured out that issues having something
to do with the error "/etc/resolv.conf isn't a symlink, not doing
anything" is being experienced for Ubuntu for years. The causes for all
of them might not be the same but seems thet have to have something in
common. I'm not an expert on such things. Some places on the Web for
such discussions: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1193585 ,
http://askubuntu.com/questions/137037/network-manager-not-populating-
resolv-conf , http://eric-b.net/?p=71 . There are discussions on
Lauchpad as well: Bug #922677 is an example. Bug #324233 (with 3
duplicates) sounds more alarming with what Thomas Hood (jdthood) wrote
on 2011-12-03 at the end of his long comment with a patch: "Who am I? I
am one of the maintainers of resolvconf in Debian. I would prefer to
leave this work up to Ubuntu folks, but these issues have been left
unresolved for years. Something has to be done."

On a server installation such as EC2, with no extra package installed
other than offical updates, with no personal configuration -all being
the defaults- a bug known for years, for such a critical component for a
server -again- surfaces up. Does it make sense?

I'm not adding any more files, not adding the files the original
reporter had attched as well because I don't know what you need. If
you'll ask me for more files outputs, I can send them.

I don't suppose so but if this a very interesting, atypical situation
calling for deep investigation, I can give the control of the EC2
instance for some time to a friend with reputation dealing with such
issues. The instance is free of charge for 1 year and includes nothing
except its default being. I can terminate it and launch a new one any
time.

Until I hear something from you here, I won't do anything, any update or
so to that system for 2-3 days. ıf I can not hear something soon maybe
I'll terminate it and can't answer probable questions anymore.

Regards.

PS: On the system in question, I can already view Web pages via w3m, if
it means something in some way.

There's actually a couple more fixes for the remainder of the issues.
Since this package resolves some of the issues, I think we should accept
it into precise-updates. Then we can create a new bug to track the
remaining issues.

[Bug 1003592] [NEW] terminal keeps crashing

2012-05-23 Thread matteo sisti sette
Public bug reported:

I had a terminal open and it suddenly crashed.

Now it keeps crashing every time I open a new one.
It either crashes immediately at opening, or after a few seconds.

Sometimes it crashes and closes immediately (I can see the error appear
for an instant, see below), other times it shows the error message and
stays open.

Hopefully this will be fixed after reboot.

Here's the error message it shows:

[Bug 1003593] [NEW] The DHCP service in libvirt needs much more configurability

2012-05-23 Thread Paul Smith
Public bug reported:

I really wish there were a way to break out of the XML "jail" and
provide arbitrary command line options to the DHCP server (dnsmasq) used
for the virtual networking in libvirt.

Failing that, I would love to see some XML-based way to add arbitrary
DHCP options to the DHCP response packet. The various RFCs provide a
vast array of options that can be configured to be delivered to clients
and all DHCP servers support these either directly or using a simple set
of encoding rules. Unfortunately, none of that is exposed in the
libvirt XML.

If THAT is not acceptable, then can we get direct support for at least
the most common DHCP options:

PXE boot options
DNS servers
DNS search domains
NTP servers
NIS servers
NIS domain
SMTP servers
POP server

The DNS and NTP ones are, in particular, serious no-brainers IMO.

However there are many more options which are less commonly used--but
that doesn't mean never. Things like printer servers, web servers, etc.
You can see http://linux.die.net/man/5/dhcp-options and/or various RFCs
for DHCP for a more complete list.

[Bug 911401] Re: CVE-2011-4621

2012-05-23 Thread John Johansen
** Description changed:

- A tight loop in user level process isn't preempted unless a realtime
- process is woken up on the cpu. Some important kernel threads such as
- events/*, kblockd/* can be blocked by the process, and the machine
- stalls. Unprivileged local user could use this flaw to DoS the system.
+ The Linux kernel before 2.6.37 does not properly implement a certain
+ clock-update optimization, which allows local users to cause a denial of
+ service (system hang) via an application that executes code in a loop.

[Bug 1003590] [NEW] evolution will not connect to my ISP o2.co.uk or its mail servers

2012-05-23 Thread Tony Morton
Public bug reported:

Under Ubuntu 11.10, serially upgraded from the original 9.04, I could
use Evolution to access my email accounts at o2.co.uk and virgin.net
without any problems. I have carried out a fresh install of 12.04 and
Evolution will not connect to mail.o2.co.uk or relay.o2broadband.co.uk
instead returning an error; ERR[AUTH] invalid user or password. This is
despite the settings being exactly the same as worked successfully under
11.10 . The same is happening if I use Thunderbird as well.

o2 say they do not support Linux or MAC and will put no time into
solving any issue, but they do say they have not recently changed
anything in their systems.

I can access webmail pages with no problem, but it is more convenient to
use a mail client, and at the moment nothing works.

[Bug 170049] Re: Inverted ruler co-ordinate system

I'm with ~suv about 1.quadrant coordinate system being quite handy.

I don't understand why the SVG spec didn't include an option to invert the
Y-Axis.
Sure you can use a scale 1,-1 for the root viewport but then the text will be
drawn upside down.

[Bug 863358] Re: Can't easily use Ubuntu without using Ubuntu Mono

2012-05-23 Thread Paul Sladen
mpt: Comment #5 (which also set "Needs Information") requests
clarification upon whether this bug should focus on remedying (a) or
(b), or something else.

The original report is:

I find the Ubuntu font fairly attractive. [Opinion]
On the other hand, I find the Ubuntu Mono font unpleasant [Needs more detail
about why it is unpleasant]
and likely to slow down my work. [Opinion]
I understand it is a matter of personal taste, [Fact]
but the reasons should be obvious from the attached image. [Guesswork
required; appears to be Launchpad]
On popular operating systems, [Guesswork required; Mac OSX?]
it is easy to use one font but not another, even if they are related.
[Factual statement, I think]
I suggest that this be possible on Ubuntu with the Ubuntu fonts too. [A
recommendation; of which Comment #5 asks for clarification in narrowing down
exactly the recommendation should be attached to; it is possible to set the
keys on Ubuntu independently at a low level; and it would be possible…]
Probably the simplest way of implementing this would be to package them
separately. [Recommendation, …to do this]

For this is solely about generating multiple .debs from the source
tarball; how should those be split for maximum useful (proportional in
one, monos in another).  Or common weights and less common weights;
should Ubuntu Condensed be separate or with the main proportionals;
should Light/Medium be included with those or packaged separately
aswell).

All of these are /technically/ possible, but guidance would still be
welcomed.

IMHO, this would be "Needs Information", but I'm happy to leave the
status as New if that is likely to be better understood.

[Bug 995185] Re: Multimedia keys are disabled

2012-05-23 Thread TJ
Mohammed, sorry I took so long to move on this after our discussion on
IRC. My earlier research on your behalf indicates this is a regression
since earlier releases of Ubuntu have supported the multimedia keys on
the Satellite M-100.

I'm assigning this issue to myself and will log my findings about what
support should be there, which version added it and if there is any
reason for the regression.
