Same problems as #5 and #8, running KDE. Workaround for this on KDE (at

[Bug 993907] Re: [nvidia GT 240] no desktop after X started

2012-08-28 Thread Shreepad S
For those who, like me, are fortunate enough to have working integrated
graphics (in addition to the NVidia card), workaround available as per
this:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=12203570&postcount=8

For those who only have the NVidia card I think something similar can be
attempted using the alternate text based installer. Else they could
continue to use Lucid 10.04.4, where this card works just fine...

[Bug 862313] Re: Duplicate menu entries in gnome-shell if menu-xdg is installed

2012-08-28 Thread Rolf Leggewie
I also have this problem in lucid. This looks like menu-xdg left over
some cruft or double-installs things.

$ ls ~/.local/share/applications/menu-xdg/*.desktop|wc -l
248
$ ll /var/lib/menu-xdg/applications/menu-xdg/*.desktop|wc -l
273

It looks like my double and triple entries (which I find in Alt+F2, "Run
Application") come from those two directories.

[Bug 1042907] Re: LightDM doesn't handle Lock Screen or Switch Session for GNOME Shell 3.5

2012-08-28 Thread Robert Ancell
I'm not going to provide this interface in LightDM due to:
- All other DMs will have the same problem
- The interface is GDM specific
- (as I understand it) It allows a session process to run PAM calls remotely to
authenticate. This is questionable security and opposes the design we have in
LightDM for the login screen to be the lock screen.
- The interface is not trivial

So the solution as I see it is we will have to patch gnome-shell to
handle not running inside GDM. The options are probably.

1. Not entering lock screen if the GDM interface is not present. This means no
lock screen but is logical (no point locking if you know you can't unlock).
2. If the GDM interface is not present then falling back to the old
gnome-screensaver method of unlocking. This means running the PAM calls
yourself to authenticate. You can't authenticate as anyone but yourself and
it's always been a bit of a hack (PAM generally assumes root access, the
modules handle running as non-root for this case specifically).

[Bug 1043102] [NEW] The screen doesn't refresh properly

2012-08-28 Thread Pramod Valavala
Public bug reported:

The screen doesn't refresh properly. When I type in the terminal and I
press the up or down arrow keys, the commands don't get refreshed. I
have to move the cursor over the command or press on the title bar or
something else for it to refresh.

Even in windows which have tabs. When I change from one tab to another,
the window doesn't refresh. Again I have to press on something else.

It happens in other windows and in browsers too. Also nautilus doesn't refresh
folder contents sometimes.
Typing text into gedit is also a problem.

It doesn't happen in Unity 2D and Gnome 3.
I just have a Intel HD 3000 integrated graphic card.

[Bug 1043094] [NEW] Install mdadm into target if installing on a RAID

2012-08-28 Thread Martin Pitt
Public bug reported:

As part of the ongoing discussion about dropping alternates [1] I wanted
to find out whether it's currently possible at all to install on a RAID
with Ubiquity. Turns out it is possible [2], but there are two post-
installation steps which are not obvious and should be fixed.

Creating partitions with gparted and building a RAID with mdadm on the
live system works well. Ubiquity detects the devices and you can
partition /dev/md0 and install on it just fine. The trouble starts
because you need to install mdadm into the target system, for which I
ran the following steps:

   * mount /dev/md0p1 /target, chroot /target
   * apt-get install mdadm; that fails because /etc/resolv.conf is empty (yay
resolvconf), so exit chroot, apt-get download mdadm, copy to /target/tmp,
chroot again, dpkg -i
   * that fails because it cannot access /dev etc, so back out of the chroot,
bind-mount /dev/, back into the chroot, dpkg --configure -a, get scared by the
warnings about not being able to load MD suppport (turns out they are harmless)

It would be nice if Ubiquity could install mdadm into the target system
together with its other setup if any of the target partitions is
/dev/md*.

[Bug 24061] Re: GPG error with apt-get/aptitude/update-manager behind proxy (BADSIG 40976EAF437D05B5)

2012-08-28 Thread Andrew
The proposed workaround does not work if the connection is still being
intercepted and returning invalid responses. It addresses point 2 of
comment #70, but not the other four causes.

I suggest that a challenge-response mechanism could help to detect
intercepting proxies and provide better feedback to the user. Any
feedback on the idea would be appreciated.

When a BADSIG error occurs
1. Send a random string to a specific Ubuntu Web service.
2. Calculate a hash of the same string.
3. Compare the server response to the calculated hash. If a non-error response
is received without the hash occuring anywhere in the response, the connection
has been intercepted.
4. If it has been determined that the connection is being intercepted, the user
can be alerted of the potential reason for the BADSIG error. If using a gui
tool, the user can be guided to determine if the problem is an authentication
issue (by opening a page in a browser) and given the opportunity to cancel the
update or confirm the cause of the problem and retry.
5. If the same, or very similar response is received in future, we can discard
the response and abort and optionally remind the user of the previous cause of
the problem.

[Bug 1043096] [NEW] Use UUID for root file systems on /dev/md*

partition /dev/md0 and install on it just fine. The trouble starts
because you need to install mdadm into the target system, which is
covered in bug 1043094.

After that, booting fails because the generated grub configuration
hardcodes /dev/md0p1, but initramfs/kernel create it as /dev/md127p1. It
would be nice if grub/Ubiquity used UUIDs for the root partition as
usual; in the initramfs /dev/disks/by-uuid/... exists just fine.

After that, the installed system boots perfectly.

[Bug 1043093] [NEW] Scratch display doesn't work correctly on AC100.

2012-08-28 Thread LE BRIS
Public bug reported:

Hi,

I installed Scratch on Toshiba AC100 (1.4.0.6~dfsg1-2~ubuntu12.04.1 on
armhf/precise) and all went fine. When I launched it, everything was well
displayed but after moving to another window (a terminal window) and then
coming back to Scratch, the display wasn't correctly updated.
I removed (apt-get purge) Scratch from my laptop, then reinstalled it the same
way, Scratch doesn't appear correctly any more.

I know that Scratch is not part of the main Ubuntu distribution
(precise-backports) but my 8-year-old son likes it and I think this is
an interesting software for the young generation.

Thanks in advance.

** Affects: scratch (Ubuntu)

 Status: New

[Bug 1042041] Re: 1:0.9.8+bzr3319-0ubuntu1 regression: keeps setting gsettings keys to wrong values

2012-08-28 Thread Martin Pitt
After this morning's login, it's back. It set

  org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences auto-raise true

to true again, although I never set that. Yesterday I "reset" the key,
so that it was definitively not in my ~/.config/dconf/.

It also set the maximize/unmaximize keys back from my custom
Super+Up/Down to the default:

org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings maximize ['Up']
org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings unmaximize ['Down']

I checked in dconf-editor, the keys are set in ~/.config/dconf, they did
not get reset to the default.

Finally it keeps deleting my keybinding for

  org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings lower ['disabled']

when I set it back to Alt+B (for the umpteenth time) in control, center,
this is how it should be:

  org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings lower ['b']

Please note that the schema default is [], not ['disabled'], so once
again it invents this "disabled" value or gets it from another migration
source.

Where are these values copied or generated from at startup? I might have
some other settings somewhere which did not affect compiz versions prior
to 1:0.9.8+bzr3319-0ubuntu1, but now keep messing up my settings.

[Bug 1043077] [NEW] upstart restarts DM to quickly

2012-08-28 Thread Tim
Public bug reported:

I am filing this against upstart since it seems to affect both lightdm
and gdm.

Basically, if I run:

sudo service lightdm restart

then it will fail with an "X Server already on display 0" message (in
gdm logs)

It appears that upstart is respawning the DM before the current X
session has shutdown completely.

If I instead do

sudo service lightdm stop

sudo service lightdm start

it works perfectly.

This is 100% reproducible on my 12.10 VM and happens around 1:5 times on
my 12.10 installation on real machine.

[Bug 1025011] Re: Firebug extension causes firefox to crash (can be triggered by opening HUD)

2012-08-28 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package firefox - 15.0+build1-0ubuntu0.11.04.2

---
firefox (15.0+build1-0ubuntu0.11.04.2) natty-security; urgency=low

  * New upstream stable release (FIREFOX_15_0_BUILD1)
- see LP: #1041620 for USN information

  * Update globalmenu-extension to 3.4.1
+ Drop the edit UI workarounds
+ Fixes for LP: #1035305 - Crash when switching apps back to Firefox
  with Firebug installed
  - Keep the menu we export in sync with the document tree all of the
time, rather than only when the menus are on screen. The HUD likes to
open submenus without opening any of its ancestors, which can result in
us handling events on menu nodes that are no longer in a document
if an ancestor responds to a bubbled-up event by removing its
children
  - Ensure we always null check the result of nsIDocument::GetCurrentDoc
+ When tearing down a menu, make sure that we empty out our DbusmenuMenuitem
in case the parent reuses that item for another menu. Fixes a memory leak
and an issue where Firebug menu items are duplicated indefinitely each
  time a menu is opened
+ Fixes for LP: #1025011 - HUD search crashes Firefox when Firebug
  is installed
  - Provide our own binding for menupopup nodes which derives from the
default binding and makes the "state" property work as if there
were a frame
  - Make all menu nodes reference counted, and hold a strong ref when
dispatching events, in case the event results in the removal of menu
nodes
+ Fix LP: #813775 - Hitting an assertion in dbusmenu
+ Fix LP: #861565 - No buttons in the "Show All Bookmarks" dialog
+ Fix LP: #775305 - An empty menu appears when FFChrome is installed
+ Add a small delay when opening the menu with the keyboard, so that
the additional items are added before the menu appears. Fixes an
issue where keyboard focus isn't on the first item when opening the
  history menu with the keyboard
  * Add Acholi to the locale blacklist
  * Separate the package name from the application name in various places.
This enables us to change the package name without having to modify the
application or packaging (eg, to allow us to provide official branded
versions of Firefox ESR using the package name "firefox-esr")
- update debian/README.Debian.in
- update debian/apport/source_firefox.py.in
- update debian/build/get-orig-source.mk
- update debian/control{,.in}
- update debian/control.langpacks

- remove debian/patches/change-moz-app-name.patch
- update debian/patches/series
- update debian/rules
- update debian/usr.bin.firefox.apparmor.*
  * Move parts of debian/rules that can be shared with Thunderbird to a
new, common file (mozbuild.mk)
- update debian/rules
- add debian/build/mozbuild.mk
- add debian/build/mozvars.mk
- update debian/build/testsuite.mk
  * Make it possible to use the same create-tarball.py for Firefox and
Thunderbird
- update debian/build/create-tarball.py

- update debian/build/enable-dist-patches.pl

firefox (15.0+build1-0ubuntu0.11.04.2) natty-security; urgency=low

  * New upstream stable release (FIREFOX_15_0_BUILD1)
- see LP: #1041620 for USN information

  * Update globalmenu-extension to 3.4.1
+ Drop the edit UI workarounds
+ Fixes for LP: #1035305 - Crash when switching apps back to Firefox
  with Firebug installed
  - Keep the menu we export in sync with the document tree all of the
time, rather than only when the menus are on screen. The HUD likes to
open submenus without opening any of its ancestors, which can result in
us handling events on menu nodes that are no longer in a document
if an ancestor responds to a bubbled-up event by removing its
children
  - Ensure we always null check the result of nsIDocument::GetCurrentDoc

  time a menu is opened
+ Fixes for LP: #1025011 - HUD search crashes Firefox when Firebug

  - Provide our own binding for menupopup nodes which derives from the
default binding and makes the "state" property work as if there
were a frame
  - Make all menu nodes reference counted, and hold a strong ref when
dispatching events, in case the event results in the removal of menu

+ Fix LP: #861565 - No buttons in the "Show All Bookmarks" dialog
+ Fix LP: #775305 - An empty menu appears when FFChrome is installed
+ Add a small delay when opening the menu with the keyboard, so that
the additional items are added before the menu appears. Fixes an
issue where keyboard focus isn't on the first item when opening the
  history menu with the keyboard
  * Add Acholi to the locale blacklist

[Bug 1025011] Re: Firebug extension causes firefox to crash (can be triggered by opening HUD)

2012-08-28 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package firefox - 15.0+build1-0ubuntu0.12.04.1

---
firefox (15.0+build1-0ubuntu0.12.04.1) precise-security; urgency=low

  * New upstream stable release (FIREFOX_15_0_BUILD1)
- see LP: #1041620 for USN information

  * Update globalmenu-extension to 3.4
+ Drop the edit UI workarounds
- update debian/control{,.in}
- update debian/control.langpacks
- update debian/control.langpacks.unavail
- update debian/firefox-locale.preinst.in
- update debian/firefox.install.in
- update debian/firefox.links.in
- update debian/firefox.lintian-overrides.in
- update debian/firefox.postinst.in
- update debian/firefox.postrm.in
- update debian/firefox.preinst.in
- update debian/firefox.sh.in
- remove debian/patches/change-moz-app-name.patch
- update debian/patches/series
- update debian/rules
- update debian/usr.bin.firefox.apparmor.*
  * Move parts of debian/rules that can be shared with Thunderbird to a
new, common file (mozbuild.mk)
- update debian/rules
- add debian/build/mozbuild.mk
- add debian/build/mozvars.mk
- update debian/build/testsuite.mk
  * Make it possible to use the same create-tarball.py for Firefox and
Thunderbird
- update debian/build/create-tarball.py
- update debian/build/get-orig-source.mk
- add debian/config/tarball.conf
  * Switch to source format 3.0
- add debian/source/format
- add debian/source/options to diff-ignore the .mozclient.mk file which
is created during clean, and to pass "--no-preparation"
- update debian/build/enable-dist-patches.pl
- rename debian/patches/series => debian/patches/series.in so the source
  isn't built with patches applied
- update debian/README.source
  * Goodbye embedded tarball, and our use of tarball.mk!
- update debian/build/create-tarball.py
- update debian/build/extract-file.py
- update debian/build/get-orig-source.mk
- update debian/build/mozbuild.mk
  * Run the upstream cleansrcdir target during clean
- update debian/build/mozbuild.mk
  * Refresh patches
- update debian/patches/mozilla-kde.patch
  * Support the "parallel" option in DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS
- update debian/build/mozbuild.mk
- update debian/config/mozconfig.in
  * Drop some of the complex shell script for creating language packs
- update debian/build/mozbuild.mk
- update debian/build/get-xpi-id.py
  * Drop searchplugin patches - these patches are an absolute pain to maintain,
as they seem to break frequently and we have to touch each localized
plugin. Instead, just keep our own copy of plugins we modify, and add
these in to the language packs at the end of the build process
- remove debian/patches/ubuntu-codes-google.patch
- remove debian/pat

[Bug 489830] Re: Settings of gpointing-device-settings are non-persistent

2012-08-28 Thread Gameover
A fix without using gpointing-device-settings:
First, type "xinput" in terminal. It will list your input devices. You should
see something like this:
⎡ Virtual core pointer id=2[master pointer (3)]
⎜ ↳ Virtual core XTEST pointerid=4[slave pointer (2)]
⎜ ↳ Genius Optical Mouseid=8[slave pointer (2)]
⎣ Virtual core keyboard id=3[master keyboard (2)]
↳ Virtual core XTEST keyboard id=5[slave keyboard (3)]
↳ Power Button id=6[slave keyboard (3)]
↳ Power Button id=7[slave keyboard (3)]
↳ AT Translated Set 2 keyboard id=9[slave keyboard (3)]
In my case, Genius Optical Mouse is my mouse, its id is 8.
Then, type "xinput list-props | grep "Evdev Middle
Button". You will get something like this:
Evdev Middle Button Emulation (259):0
Evdev Middle Button Timeout (260): 50
The id in my case, the id of "Evdev Middle Button Emulation" is 256
Then, type "xinput set-int-prop 8 1"
In my case, I should type "xinput set-int-prop 8 259 8 1"
BONUS: you can set the timeout with "xinput set-int-prop
 32 "

If it works, then add "xinput set-int-prop 8 1" to your session startup application.
Please refer to
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AddingProgramToSessionStartup

Hope this helps. :)

Were you attempting to respond to an existing defect? Since you mention
confirming an existing bug that's what I was thinking. We need to move
this bug regardless as gnome-nettool is a network information tool and
does not deal with network drivers.
