[Bug 963106] Re: NetworkManager causes orphaned inodes
For some reason, the main issue of this report now hit me. Root cannot be unmounted, because dhclient and dnsmasq is still running at this point (verified by running lsof in umountroot). The order of my init scripts is still fine now, I have S35networking, S40umountfs and S60umountroot, so this is not the cause anymore. Also when stopping networking manually, dhclient and dnsmasq are both still running. I took the time to update to 12.10 (quantal), but still no change to this issue for me. My workaround is a "killall dnsmasq dhclient; sleep 2" in umountroot, but obviously, this doesn't even count as dirty hack, this is even more ugly. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/963106 Title: NetworkManager causes orphaned inodes To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager/+bug/963106/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 632011] Re: gnome-language-selector won't install language support
I have this same problem in Ubuntu 12.04. When I installed 12.04 back in April 2012 it worked fine (as it has for the last several releases stretching back to 2006 when I first started installing multiple languages), but I re-installed 12.04 this past week and had this come up. I am trying to install the Korean, German and Spanish packs. I tried sudo apt-get install -f. I tried sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade. I tried sudo dpkg --configure -a. I tried sudo dpkg-reconfigure locales. I looked in Synaptic under "status" and there are no broken packages or thorny issues. I tried installing each language separately instead of grouping them together. A thorough google/duckduckgo/ubuntu forums/launchpad search reveals that what I wrote above are the only offered solutions and none of them have worked for me. I wasn't sure if I had to file a new bug since the OP did his for 10.10 and my bug is in 12.04. If I need to file a new bug because of the different release, please let me know. ** Attachment added: "screenshot of the offending action" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/language-selector/+bug/632011/+attachment/3406920/+files/Screenshot%20from%202012-10-21%2015%3A24%3A17.png -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/632011 Title: gnome-language-selector won't install language support To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/language-selector/+bug/632011/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1066228] Re: 8086:0162 After updates quantal doesn't boot into graphics mode on my ivybridge system
I build up my new system and thought it would be a good idea to install ubuntu 12.10 beta1. In general it was booting up to lightdm. Sometimes I had a GPU-hung directly after login. So in the end it never worked properly with an ubuntu kernel. In the mean time I tried kernel 3.5.0-18-generic from the proposed update. That also doesn't work properly. [Bug 1069288] [NEW] Icons look blurred at odd launcher icon sizes
Public bug reported: Steps to reproduce: 1. Open "System Settings" > "Appearance" 2. Move the "Launcher icon size" slider to an odd value - for example from the default 48 to 47. [Bug 1069183] Re: LightDM KDE Greeter loads the desktop half a minute after login
That should be everything I need to test this. I suspect a one line change (to turn off smooth scaling on the background image) will fix everything. I now have the images and can test. Alternately I could maybe cache a scaled png version. I'll see how well this first fix works. Actually when I first went through benchmarking LightDM having a JPEG background (1920x1280) caused the processor to spend as much time decoding the JPEG as it did doing everything else. (JPEG can have up to ~6000 CPU calculations for each block of 8x8 pixels. My day-job is about image compression, I could go on for hours) . It'l be slowing down your load time too. [Bug 1066294] Re: package linux-image-3.5.0-17-generic (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: subprocess new pre-installation script returned error exit status 1
Sorry, per #3 [thanks vilbara, wish I'd actually read your comment first!], it looks like xubuntu and lubuntu were workarounds for the initial "PAE-free" release of 12.04, but have already inherited the PAE requirement from mainline Ubuntu for 12.10, so... the 'grace period' offered by those distributions has already expired. [I'd be happy to live insecurely but cautiously without NX emulation - AFAIK it wasn't even introduced to Ubuntu until relatively recently, see bug #369978 - maintenance of the patch being claimed as one reason for going PAE-only - even if this required manual installation of a specific 'nopae-insecure' kernel with screaming warnings after the fact, but given the other limitations it seems unlikely that many of the 'hot new features' post-12.04LTS would be available on my hardware anyway.] -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1066294 Title: package linux-image-3.5.0-17-generic (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: subprocess new pre-installation script returned error exit status 1 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1066294/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1066294] Re: package linux-image-3.5.0-17-generic (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: subprocess new pre-installation script returned error exit status 1
I hope this isn't just a me-too, but I want to add that I'm amazed that I somehow lived through both 12.04 (and the 12.10 upgrade process) completely oblivious to the fact that PAE had become 'temporarily requisite' for 12.04 at launch and now definitely requisite for 12.10 absent 'unsupported' hacks and workarounds.* The upgrade process on a Dell Latitude D600 laptop (first-generation Pentium M, no PAE) did warn that my graphics were at risk for being unsupported (as prior versions have), but there's no equivalent check and warning for the 'CPU surprise.' Since Ubuntu does leave old kernels lying around in /boot, the upgraded system was still bootable with 3.2.0, but between the kernel issue and the fact that Unity still isn't satisfied with what GL features the radeon driver can offer with an ""ATI Radeon Mobility 9000 (M9) Lf (AGP)" (ChipID = 0x4c66)" - yet no longer falls back to unity-2d, despite it still being installed** - I decided to back out rather than fight. For users bit by this scenario who want to 'downgrade' back to a known state, the following abuse of apt (as posted on the Ubuntu Wiki) works: Replace /etc/apt/sources.list with the helpfully-saved sources.list.distUpgrade in the same directory; Create the file /etc/apt/preferences containing the following: Package: * Pin: release a=precise Pin-Priority: 1001 Then: apt-get update; apt-get dist-upgrade; wait, wait some more, and you'll be back to 12.04. (That this managed to result in circular dependencies for CUPS on my system, so printing may be dead until you resolve that by hand, but elsewise things are back to normal.) *The 'official' workarounds aren't terribly bad if you're starting from a fresh install: Rely on xubuntu (XFCE) or lubuntu (LXDE), then install the "ubuntu-desktop" package if you want Unity alongside the lighter-weight desktops - but that sort of 'crossgrade' is a little more annoying on an installed system you'd just intended to update rather than modify. If you're determined, some minor adjustments to the above recipe should work. However, it's unclear how long the 'lightweight' distributions will continue to offer non-PAE kernels if the main Ubuntu kernel team is tired of maintaining some of the security patches; if there's a 'position statement' from those distros re: how long support can be expected, please link! **(The absence of unity-2d fallback is surely surmountable with editing of the GDM config; I just wasn't in the mood. I'm still somehow surprised that Unity demands more GL features than compiz.) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1066294 Title: package linux-image-3.5.0-17-generic (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: subprocess new pre-installation script returned error exit status 1 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1066294/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1069270] [NEW] [quantal][regression] googleearth 3d graphics don't work with nvidia GeForce4 card
Public bug reported: After upgrade to quantal, which I believe caused an upgrade in mesa from 8.x to 9.0, I can no longer use googleearth. Previously, it worked pretty well using the mesa DRI driver. The only problems were that borders sometimes showed through the earth from over the horizon, and it was necessary to turn off the atmosphere display. After the upgrade, from any altitude the surface of the globe appears as large rectangles, sometimes with various more or less triangular shapes. See attached screen shot. I tried this first with both libgl1-mesa-dri and libgl1-mesa-dri- experimental installed. I then removed libgl1-mesa-dri-experimental, powered off and rebooted. It didn't make a difference. That is the problem Phill this particular failure give me absolutely no way to get the logs "cleanly". I can not log into a terminal and apport is installed anyway (so I would have to get that working too). Now with that being said I can get to a failed partition from a live USB or working partition and copy the syslog and kernlog. But I see no installation or partman logs in the failed partition. [Bug 1069183] Re: LightDM KDE Greeter loads the desktop half a minute after login
Hi David, thanx for replying. You are doing great work on LightDM KDE Greeter, thank you! After some testing with various backgrounds it seems that the delay is always specific to each background image and I was unlucky enough to select the worst of them which is the one with the wafer/processors (third one below @ 2560x1440). Some of the images I tried are the following (from simplest to most complex): http://wallpaperswide.com/ubuntu_desktop_blue-wallpapers.html 1280x720 - 220KB - 3sec delay 1600x900 - 333KB - 3.1sec delay 2560x1440 - 990KB - 3.5sec delay http://wallpaperswide.com/white_wolves_2-wallpapers.html 1280x720 - 298KB - 3.7sec delay 1600x900 - 465KB - 3.9sec delay 2560x1440 - 1.1MB - 4.2sec delay http://wallpaperswide.com/processors-wallpapers.html 1280x720 - 369KB - 13.9sec delay 1600x900 - 525KB - 17.2sec delay 2560x1440 - 1.1MB - 25.9sec delay As we expected, a bigger resolution and/or file size produces a bigger delay. However the last wafer/processors images have something unique that causes this huge delay. Maybe it's my PC that's getting old (AMD X2 4400+, 2GB RAM, made in 2005) so it would be nice if we could test those last background images on a faster pc. P.S Do you happen to know why after the login and before ksplash loads the icons, a black X cursor appears for about a second? Is this normal X behavior? [Bug 1069265] Re: Compiz hangs at first click anywhere on desktop - can work around by deleting .compiz/session/* first.
** Description changed: After upgrading from 12.04 to 12.10, I found that once logged in, I can move the mouse around and items highlight as I mouseover them, as well as the launcher seeming to respond appropriately too. Upon first click, however (whether it be on the launcher, taskbar, or even a right-click on the desktop) compiz or unity (inextricably linked now?) hangs. The mouse pointer can be moved about freely, but otherwise no further action is possible. It occured to me that perhaps the issue was related to some sort of configuration issue - maybe leftover bits from 12.04 confusing 12.10. I tried the guest login, and everything worked flawlessly, possibly confirming my suspicion. My next step was to delete .compiz/session from my home directory. Upon reboot, everything worked fine again. Problem solved? Apparently not - upon next boot, it hangs again as before. I also find that .compiz/session has been re-created. Deleting it via a terminal session then allowed me to reboot to a working desktop, but only once unless I first delete the contents of .compiz/session Workaround: As a workaround, I've added a line to /etc/rc.local to delete the contents of .compiz/session at boot time: - rm /home/my_username/.compiz/session/* + rm /home/my_username/.compiz/session/* For a more verbose description including troubleshooting steps taken, see: - https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/211844 + https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+question/211844 ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 12.10 Package: compiz 1:0.9.8.4-0ubuntu3 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 3.5.0-17.28-generic 3.5.5 Uname: Linux 3.5.0-17-generic x86_64 NonfreeKernelModules: nvidia .proc.driver.nvidia.gpus.0: Error: [Errno 21] Is a directory: '/proc/driver/nvidia/gpus/0' .proc.driver.nvidia.registry: Binary: "" .proc.driver.nvidia.version: - NVRM version: NVIDIA UNIX x86_64 Kernel Module 304.43 Sun Aug 19 20:14:03 PDT 2012 - GCC version: gcc version 4.7.2 (Ubuntu/Linaro 4.7.2-2ubuntu1) + NVRM version: NVIDIA UNIX x86_64 Kernel Module 304.43 Sun Aug 19 20:14:03 PDT 2012 + GCC version: gcc version 4.7.2 (Ubuntu/Linaro 4.7.2-2ubuntu1) .tmp.unity.support.test.0: - + ApportVersion: 2.6.1-0ubuntu3 Architecture: amd64 CompizPlugins: [core, bailer, detection, composite, opengl, compiztoolbox, decor, resize, regex, animation, mousepoll, imgpng, place, workarounds, move, snap, session, gnomecompat, vpswitch, grid, wall, unitymtgrabhandles, expo, fade, ezoom, scale, unityshell] CompositorRunning: compiz Date: Sat Oct 20 19:04:07 2012 DistUpgraded: 2012-10-19 19:43:12,592 DEBUG enabling apt cron job DistroCodename: quantal DistroVariant: ubuntu DkmsStatus: nvidia-current, 304.43, 3.5.0-17-generic, x86_64: installed GraphicsCard: - NVIDIA Corporation G98 [GeForce 9300M GS] [10de:06e9] (rev a1) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]) -Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. [Bug 1069267] [NEW] Huge memory consumption on load
Public bug reported: I have a rather big image database (18k+) and everytime I start Shotwell my system (not too shabby) will nearly die. That's because everything is transferred to Swap while Shotwell is loading and until all this has unswapped the system is completely unusable.
