[Bug 1059471] Re: 2.41 fails to mount root partition
** Description changed: + [Impact] + A change introduced in mountall in quantal can cause boot-time hangs for some users when a filesystem is listed in /etc/fstab with a non-canonicalized mount point. This is a regression vs. previous releases. + + [Test case] + 1. Create a directory, /mnt/realmount + 2. Make /mnt/linkmount a symlink to /mnt/realmount + 3. Add the following entry to /etc/fstab, immediately after the root filesystem: +overlay /mnt/linkmount tmpfs defaults 0 0 + (order here matters because this is a virtual filesystem, and mountall creates implicit dependencies for virtual filesystems based on /etc/fstab ordering) + 4. Install plymouth to the initramfs by running: 'echo FRAMEBUFFER=yes > /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/lp1059471; update-initramfs -u'. (Otherwise, the boot will hang before plymouth splash has started.) + 5. Reboot. Confirm that the system hangs on boot with a message about /mnt/linkmount not being mounted. + 6. Press 'S' to skip this filesystem and finish booting. + 7. Install mountall 2.42 from proposed. + 8. Reboot. Confirm that the system boots all the way up without hanging. + 9. Clean up by running 'rm -f /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/lp1059471; update-initramfs -u'. + + [Regression potential] + The mountall code is very complicated, with little test coverage and no integration testing. I believe the code is now correct, but the risk of a regression in an unrelated boot configuration is non-negligible. + When booting with 2.41, I get a message "The disk drive for / is not ready yet or not present" but when I drop into a shell for manual recovery, / curiously /is/ mounted. Downgrading mountall to 2.40 allows me to boot again. Let me know if you need any more information. [Bug 1076259] [NEW] Firestarter should use /var/log/kern.log not /var/log/messages
Public bug reported: Firestarter is looking for the file /var/log/messages . If Firestarter cannot find this file upon startup, then it prints the error: Failed to open the system log No event information will be available. It appears that Ubuntu no longer uses /var/log/messages by default, starting back in Ubuntu 11.04. However, the firewall logs are still written to /var/log/kern.log. Therefore, Firestarter should monitor /var/log/kern.log . Yes, it is true that the error "Failed to open the system log" can be resolved if we enable /var/log/messages by modifying /etc/rsyslog.d/50-default.conf and uncommenting the following section: #*.=info;*.=notice;*.=warn;\ # auth,authpriv.none;\ # cron,daemon.none;\ # mail, news.none -/var/log/messages However, a simpler fix is to modify Firestarter to use the default firewall logs which are written to /var/log/kern.log . [Bug 831768] Re: aptitude cannot handle conflicts with multiarch enabled
** Description changed: [Impact] * Inability to use aptitude on multi-arch systems. Any action which results in a packaging conflict, or otherwise broken package, invokes the problem resolver which will proceed to remove *all* foreign-arch packages. The packages are removed always, even if they are unrelated to the problem being resolved. In the usual case, the problem resolver is unable to find any solution which does not involve removing all foreign- arch packages. * Complete lack of upstream support for aptitude, regardless of whether any specific issue appears to be related to multi-arch. Upstream does not provide any support for aptitude where it is installed on a multi-arch system unless all of these conditions are met: - it is at least version 0.6.6; and - attached multiarch-conflicts.patch is applied. At this point Ubuntu is 100% provider of support for aptitude on - Oneiric, Precise, and Quantal. + Oneiric, and Precise. [Fix] As attached. Update the problem resolver to be more informed about multi-arch packages and specifically the implicit package relations associated with them. [Test Case] 1. Enable multiarch (should be automatic on new oneiric systems) 2. Install an i386 package on amd64 (like flashplugin-installer:i386) 3. Mark something with a lot of dependencies for installation 4. On the confirmation screen, try to remove on of the dependencies (aptitude will now fail to perform upgrades when there's a package conflict w/out removing the i386 libs) This renders aptitude painful on a multiarch enabled system (default in oneiric). [Workaround] 1. If you can survive without 32 bit libraries, just comment out the single line in /etc/dpkg/dpkg.cfg.d/multiarch; or 2. Use another package manager (e.g. apt-get, synaptic, or Software Center) 3. Disable the problem resolver by adding this line in /etc/apt/apt.conf: Aptitude::ProblemResolver::StepLimit "0"; [Regression Potential] * Patch is of moderate size but requires someone with strong APT knowledge to verify. * Some package relations, particularly conflicts and breaks, may be wrongly ignored and packages not identified as broken by aptitude. This can leave a system in a broken state and/or result in dpkg errors. * Any complex dependency situation is potentially handled incorrectly. - * Already in Wheezy and Sid, suitable for Quantal. + * Already in Wheezy, Sid, and Quantal. No regressions reported. + + * Multiple user confirmations that the patch works on aptitude 0.6.6. ** Do not even consider applying this patch to SRU without it being first thoroughly inspected by a seasoned APT person. If you have never looked deep in to the workings of, say, class pkgProblemResolver (libapt-pkg) or the aptitude problem resolver, then you are probably underqualified to inspect the patch. ** * None of the regression potential has any consideration given to Ubuntu-specific factors. An Ubuntu dev. should consider reviewing and updating as appropriate, at least to remove this notice. [Bug 976632] Re: nfs4 mounts are not mapping userids, uses nobody/nogroup
I have seen the same problem on a recent upgrade of a client from 10.04 to 12.04. The server is still running 10.04 at this stage. To get the right ownership showing on the client I had to uncomment the 'Domain = localdomain' line as suggested. The interesting bit is that another client which has just had 12.04 installed as a new installation works correctly with teh same server out of the box with the 'Domain = localhost' line commented out. [Bug 1076082] Re: [RFE] Allow Bug Reporting Against Linux Package on Nexus 7
I don't currently have a nexus 7 installation at hand, but does that kernel come from a particular PPA or so? What does "apt-cache policy linux-image-3.1.10-6-nexus7" say? We could whitelist that PPA. The main question is, does the kernel team actually want bug reports against the linux source in Ubuntu for this, or should these reports go to a separate Lauchpad project instead? Sorry for another post but, Just replicated the error 3 times in a row with Firefox 16.0.2 with the method i described in #17. The only slight addon is i am moving the mouse left and right about a centemeter while/as i press the left mouse button. Obviously this does not seem to be just firefox that causes the problem.
