[Bug 1051723] Re: Software sources takes 30 seconds to load

2012-11-21 Thread Robert Roth
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1073728 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1073728

@warren: This has been marked as a duplicate of the more recently reported bug
as:
* the more recent bug has a more detailed description of what the problem is
(although it is a big enough problem that software properties loads in 30s) -
there are other applications which load in 30seconds, however all of them have
some sort of feedback to show the user that something is happening (loading
bar, splash screen, etc)
* the other bug has a set of useful suggestions on what could be done to fix
the bug, or at least temporarily improve the situation until the root cause is
fixed.
Usually I know it's best to mark more recent bugs as duplicates of the older
bugs, however there are some exceptions when the bugs differ in the ammount of
communication or amount of information provided. Another solution to do this
would have been to mark the more recent bug as a duplicate of the older one,
and overwrite the description of the older bug with the description of the more
detailed one, however this would send out more notifications for the people
subscribed to the bugs.
I hope you understand the decision now, sorry for the confusion.

[Bug 1081905] [NEW] clang++ uses older g++ library

2012-11-21 Thread Joe Wood
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 12.10

clang:
  Installed: 3.0-6ubuntu3

gcc:
  Installed: 4:4.7.2-1ubuntu2
g++:
  Installed: 4:4.7.2-1ubuntu2

The following invocation of clang fails to find the 4.7 g++ standard libraries
and instead uses the 4.6 libraries:

$ clang++ -std=c++11 -pthread threads.cpp

result:
In file included from threads.cpp:1:
/usr/include/c++/4.6/chrono:666:7: error: static_assert expression is
  not an integral constant expression
  static_assert(system_clock::duration::min()
  ^ ~
1 error generated.

It should be looking in the 4.7 include lib. I believe that this is a
known fault with g++ 4.6.

[Bug 1078799] Re: Compiz started suddently consume CPU. 70% with i7 processor

2012-11-21 Thread Daniel van Vugt
The 12.10 kernel is based on 3.6, however it is confusingly named
"3.5.0-18-generic" still.

It sounds like the root cause of the bug is Firefox and/or Skype forcing
redraws. This will incur some compiz CPU usage but will only trigger
Unity redraws (the most expensive part) if some part of those apps is
overlapping the panel or shell (including a broken/buggy indicator).

[Bug 886778] Re: running applications without an icon use a blank icon

2012-11-21 Thread Timo Jyrinki
Separated the Dash document icon issue into bug #1081901, leaving this
bug to deal with the blank icons in launcher and task switcher.

** Description changed:

  [Impact]

Blank icon instead of generic icon when icon not provided by
  application.

  [Test Case]

  1. install an application without an icon (e.g. Sigil);
  2. run the application.
- 3. notice Launcher icon (and dash, task switcher)
+ 3. notice Launcher icon and task switcher icon - should not be blank

  [Regression Potential]

There should be no regression potential, default icon is used only if no
icon is specified. The default icon should not be used instead of real
  icons.

-
  ---

Starting an application that does not have an icon associated with it
- displays a blank icon in the launcher, dash and the task switcher.
+ displays a blank icon in the launcher and the task switcher.

It should display using the standard/stock default application icon.

Separating the Dash issue from the blank icon bug #886778.

An application with a .desktop file but without Icon line in there
should not be shown with a document icon as seen in
https://launchpadlibrarian.net/85093547/dash.png - is there another icon
that could be used for applications?

You can emulate it with any application by removing the Icon line from
/usr/share/applications/[yourapp].desktop

[Bug 1078799] Re: Compiz started suddently consume CPU. 70% with i7 processor

2012-11-21 Thread Koopee
What is the kernel in 12.10?

I made a decision that I would so much want to have a stable system and
my previous experiences of frequent distribution upgrades have been not-
so-good. Many times I was hoping for a better stability all in vain.

I definedly can not run standard 12.04 ubuntu because of
- display problems:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/1074338
- random power offs:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1076094
   and
- random freezes: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/996989

This 3.6 kernel has been working pretty fine for now.

And I think can live with this compiz bug - seems that when I restarted
firefox and skype, the usage went normal. I don't know if it was firefox
or both which made the difference, I had a problem with skype that I
could not get the chat window open. and after that I had to restart
Firefox.

[Bug 1072464] Re: Chromium keeps crashing in Ubuntu 12.10

2012-11-21 Thread C.Samaroo
@Phil Whieside. I thought it would be the issue that my Netbook is not
powerful enough. I have heard about Zorin OS and I have the Light
version, ideal for Netbooks, running off of a USB stick. There is the
option to install Zorin to dual boot but I want to test it out first.
Can I ask, What are your thoughts on Zorin Lite for my Netbook in
comparison to Lubuntu? Also, do you think either would run better on my
system (along side Windows) rather than from a USB? And lastly, could I
get the same support for Zorin as I would do with Lubuntu with Launchpad
and other Ubuntu help sites?

And Thanks for taking the time to reply!

[Bug 789706] Re: Couldn't find obvious defaults for: data-directory lisp-directory

2012-11-21 Thread Manfred Hampl
There is a question related to this bug,
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apt/+question/214693

Executing the workaround as shown in http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-
bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=677191#50

sudo /usr/lib/emacsen-common/emacs-remove xemacs21
sudo apt-get install emacsen-common

apparently has helped in that case.

Can someone else with this bug try if that workaround helps also in
other cases?

[Bug 1048059] Re: Adding ACLs to /media/$user does not work

2012-11-21 Thread Martin Pitt
The ubuntu installer never put the "acl" option into /etc/fstab. On my
quantal-installed system I have no such option:

$ grep acl /proc/mounts /etc/fstab
$

I don't see any tune2fs in our installers either. So what I suspect is
that mkfs enables the option by default these days, but hasn't in the
past?

My /home file system was created in August 2010, and I get

$ sudo dumpe2fs -h /dev/sda5 | grep 'mount options'
Default mount options:(none)

while my root partition (which I recreate with every install) has

Default mount options:user_xattr acl

On both file systems I can use ACLs, so the implicit default if the file
system does not specify an explicit one seems to work correctly. Can
people who are affected by this please run above command on their root
file system? (That's the kind of debugging and comparison I would like
to do with SSH access...)

As a last resort I can still make udisks get along without ACL support,
but this would be a bad and incomplete workaround for the root problem.
There's certainly other software which wants ACLs to work, so I'd like
to get this fixed properly rather.

[Bug 989252] Re: pylint-gui throws exception when running file or package

2012-11-21 Thread MestreLion
Is it possible for Ubuntu to release a new version containing this
patch, for 12.04 precise and up?

- This patch has the same content of what was applied upstream:
https://bitbucket.org/logilab/pylint/changeset/b68f274aaab72edcb4cced3d8f4d60bd9d1f0353

- Upstream already released debian packages for 0.25.2 and 0.26, but
none of them made into debian's unstable yet (only 0.26, in
experimental)

- This is a severe usability issue: pyling-gui simple does not work at
all without this patch.

If it is possible to release an "0.25.1-1~0ubuntu1" , what would the
procedure be?

If not, how can I apply the patch myself in a way that future releases
of pylint (if any) will install cleanly, without any dpkg conflicts?

Thanks!

[Bug 1067951] Re: Firefox randomly loses window decoration in Gnome Classic (Compiz)

2012-11-21 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Some more things worth trying:

* Disable/remove the flash plugin; or

* When the decoration is lost:
   1. Click on the Firefox window.
   2. Alt+Space> Minimise
   3. Alt+Tab to the minimized window to restore it.

[Bug 1073669] Re: Bluetooth won't stay disabled after reboot due to early upstart job

2012-11-21 Thread Kyle Fazzari
@Eugene: Thanks for trying the patch. I feel like the one second delay
is rather hacky though; this script doesn't always fail the first time,
and if you disagree with the five-second resolution on the retries,
changing that rate is probably a better solution than the one-second
delay.

The latest mainline build 3.7 fails the same way with I/O errors,
except, it manages to power off the machine. Upon power on, the machine
performs a clean boot instead of resuming from hibernate.

[Bug 1073669] Re: Bluetooth won't stay disabled after reboot due to early upstart job

2012-11-21 Thread Eugene T.
Ive just noticed the patch. Tried it - works for me. Maybe it still
makes sense to add constant 1 sec delay in beginning of the script (and
maybe reduce conditional delays to 3 sec to balance timings). I think
its important, because for all users, who encounter this problem, the
service is going to be respawned at least once with 5 sec delay.
Introducing 1 sec constant delay makes the script work for most cases
from the first try. Also, the first if-block detects if rfkill stuff is
available at all, so there is no point in restarting the service in this
case. Kyle's file from the first comment with above changes is attached
to this comment.
