[Bug 1090593] Re: D.ROOT-SERVERS.NET changing January 3rd 2013

2013-01-31 Thread Robie Basak
I wasn't happy to ask for sponsorship for SRUs directly from LaMont's
changes, since they included some autotools noise and updated the entire
db.root file instead of just changing the IP of D.ROOT-SERVERS.NET. For
example, they added new IPv6 entries in older releases that weren't
there before. So I've created a set of minimal debdiffs from scratch
which change the IP of D.ROOT-SERVERS.NET in db.root only. I've built
and tested each one.

[Bug 1100920] Re: In Ubuntu 12.10, the legacy 'user' cloud-config option is not handled properly

2013-01-31 Thread Scott Moser
I'm pretty sure that the trunk commit just works when applied to
quantal. I'm attaching a deb here and the patch that built it, mainly
for future reference.

I would appreciate feedback as to whether or not it works though. The reason
(i think) it just works without a config change as Clint suggested is that
the distro class in quantal returned a dict for 'get_default_user' the same as
trunk does. The difference is one just comes from code (quantal) and the other
from config (raring/trunk).

[Bug 1100545] Re: It should be possible to access the ConfigDrive as a CDROM drive as well

2013-01-31 Thread Scott Moser
** Description changed:

- Currently Cloud-Init requires the ConfigDrive to be available on an
- unpartitioned disk, not a CDROM drive. Windows doesn't recognise this
- type of devices and mounting them requires the extraction of the data
- from the raw disk to an ISO file to be mounted / extracted afterwards.
+ == Begin SRU Information ==
+ [Impact]
+ 'config-drive' is a mechanism for passing data from the hypervisor (or
+ cloud platform) to the guest (instance). cloud-init as delivered in 12.10
+ correctly implements locating this drive as it is present in OpenStack
+ in the folsom release.
+
+ A change is being made in grizzly to allow for the device that contains
+ the data to be presented as a CD-ROM rather than a block device as it was
+ done in folsom. This changes is primarily driven by non-linux
+ hypervisors.
+
+ In order to support Ubuntu cloud images running as a guest on grizzly
+ hypervisors that choose to attach the config-drive as a CD-ROM, we need
+ to make a change to cloud-init to consider CD-ROMs as a possible source.
+ Previously, cloud-init would ignore any device that ended with a digit
+ (0-9). Now, it allows the data to come from any block device that is
+ not a partition.
+
+ [Test Case]
+ Attached to this bug is an ISO that provides config-drive-v2 data.
+ The following is the current situation:
+ attached-as-cdrom: cloud-init ignores.
+ attached-as-disk: cloud-init processes
+
+ After the fix is applied, you will see;
+ attached-as-cdrom: cloud-init processes
+ attached-as-disk: cloud-init processes
+
+ The provided ISO file simply sets a password for the 'ubuntu' user to
+ 'passw0rd'. So, verification that the test worked is as easy as logging
+ in with 'ubuntu' and 'passw0rd', either via ssh or via the console.
+
+ To perform this test, download a quantal cloud-image from
+ http://cloud-images.ubuntu.com and boot it with kvm.
+
+ Booting a kvm instance with iso as cdrom:
+ kvm -drive disk1.img,if=virtio -cdrom lp-1077020.iso
+ Booting a kvm instance with iso as disk:
+ kvm -drive disk1.img,if=virtio -drive lp-1077020.iso,if=virtio
lp-1077020.iso
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+ The potential for regression is low. The most likely possibility for
+ error would be in incorrectly identifying a cd-rom and its content as a
+ config-drive.
+ == End   SRU Information ==
+
+
+ Currently Cloud-Init requires the ConfigDrive to be available on an
unpartitioned disk, not a CDROM drive. Windows doesn't recognise this type of
devices and mounting them requires the extraction of the data from the raw disk
to an ISO file to be mounted / extracted afterwards.

It should be optionally possible to access the ConfigDrive as a plain
CDROM as well to simplify the access on any operating system.

The raw HDD option compared to the CDROM one offers slightly better data
access protection especially for the admin_pass field, but as this is
going to be a deprecated option in the short term, the benefits are very
limited compared to the additional complications for accessing the
  ConfigDrive data.

Re: [Bug 1100920] Re: In Ubuntu 12.10, the legacy 'user' cloud-config option is not handled properly

2013-01-31 Thread Clint Byrum
Excerpts from Scott Moser's message of 2013-01-31 14:19:24 UTC:
I'm pretty sure that the trunk commit just works when applied to
quantal. I'm attaching a deb here and the patch that built it, mainly
 for future reference.

I would appreciate feedback as to whether or not it works though. The reason
(i think) it just works without a config change as Clint suggested is that
the distro class in quantal returned a dict for 'get_default_user' the same
as trunk does. The difference is one just comes from code (quantal) and the
 other from config (raring/trunk).
 b

You may be right, I don't think I actually tried the patch backported, I
just tried trunk on quantal. So perhaps it is SRU'able.

[Bug 1031065] Re: cloud-init-nonet runs 'start networking' explicitly

2013-01-31 Thread Scott Moser
** Description changed:

+ == Begin SRU Information ==
+ [Impact]
+ Cloud-init in 12.04 has an upstart job named 'cloud-init-nonet' that
+ calls 'start networking' explicitly. This was done to fix a boot
+ deadlock (bug 800824), but it was not the proper fix.
+
+ A much more correct fix is now possible because of improvements
+ that have been made in mountall (bug 643289) and have been brought
+ back to 12.04.
+
+ calling 'start networking' from cloud-init-nonet could cause issues
+ because other upstart 'start on' conditions might not be met at this
+ point in boot.
+
+ The fix here is the same as is now applied in quantal and raring.
+ It more correctly addresses the root issue, that network-device-added
+ events were not being emitted in a container. There is now a job named
+ cloud-init-container that will emit 'network-device-added' events if
+ it is inside a container *and* its sanity checks show that the given
+ device has not already been brought up.
+
+ [Test Case]
+ You can demonstrate why this change was necessary, and that the
+ provided change fixes the issue by doing the following:
+
+ ## create a 'source' (pristine) root ##
+ sudo lxc-create -t ubuntu-cloud --name source-precise-amd64 -- \
+--release precise --arch amd64 --stream daily
+
+ # set up 2 copies of the pristine root
+ # * 'nostart' just has cloud-init's call to 'start-networking' disabled
+ # * 'patched' contains the full upgraded cloud-init
+ sudo lxc-clone -o source-precise-amd64 -n nostart
+ f=/var/lib/lxc/nostart/etc/init/cloud-init-nonet.conf
+ if [ ! -e $f.dist ]; then
+# disable 'start networking' in the cloud-init-nonet job
+sudo cp $f $f.dist
+sudo sed -i 's,^\([ ]\+start networking.*\),#\1,' $f
+ fi
+
+ sudo lxc-clone -o source-precise-amd64 -n patched
+ deb=cloud-init_0.6.3-0ubuntu1.5~ppa1_all.deb
+ rpath=/var/lib/lxc/patched/rootfs
+ sudo cp $deb /var/lib/lxc/patched/rootfs/tmp
+ sudo LANG=C chroot /var/lib/lxc/patched/rootfs dpkg -i /tmp/$deb
+
+ ## Now, start both. the 'nostart' root will hang on
+ ## cloud-init waiting for networking to come up.
+ ## the 'patched' will come all the way up quickly.
+ ## You can stop them with 'sudo lxc-stop -n name'
+ sudo lxc-start -n patched -- /sbin/init --verbose
+ sudo lxc-start -n nostart -- /sbin/init --verbose
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+ Regressions would be likely to occur in one of 2 places:
+ a.) inside a container, where cloud-init-container caused a
+ problem by emitting its network-device-added events
+
+ Here, the problem would be very limited to lxc containers
+ that have cloud-init inside them. This is likely very small.
+
+ b.) outside a container, where 'start networking' was previously
+ fixing a boot deadlock that could have occurred.
+ Here, the changes are basically making precise work like 12.10
+ and 13.04, so hopefully issues would have been shaken out there.
+ == End SRU Information ==
+
+
In development of 'overlayroot' package, I was mounting / as rw in the
initramfs.
This was causing a different order of execution of mounts, and as a result a
different order of networking resolvconf and networking bringup.

It exposed a bug in resolvconf, which was being called on boot in this order:
   Mon Jul 30 19:08:58 UTC 2012 /sbin/resolvconf -a lo.inet
   Mon Jul 30 19:08:59 UTC 2012 /sbin/dhclient-script
   Mon Jul 30 19:08:59 UTC 2012 /sbin/resolvconf -a eth0.dhclient
   Mon Jul 30 19:08:59 UTC 2012 /sbin/resolvconf -a eth0.inet
   Mon Jul 30 19:08:59 UTC 2012 /sbin/resolvconf --enable-updates
   Mon Jul 30 19:08:59 UTC 2012 /etc/resolvconf/update.d/libc -u

The normal order is for resolvconf --enable-updates to be called (from
/etc/init/resolvconf.conf) before anything else. As a result, I was seeing
errors like:
resolvconf: Error: /run/resolvconf/interface either does not exist or is
not a directory

This may be exposing a more grave issue, in that I believe the reason
for dhclient coming up before resolvconf.conf started was that it was
  being run as a result of /etc/init/network-interface.conf. I don't
immediately see how that is guarnateed to have /run ounted at all.

[Bug 1037567] Re: need config-drive-v2 support

2013-01-31 Thread Scott Moser
** Description changed:

- We need to update the config-drive datasource to support config-drive-v2
- [1]. There is a document showing what the config-drive looks like at
- [2].
+ == Begin SRU Information ==
+ [Impact]
+ 'config-drive' is a mechanism for passing data from the hypervisor (or
+ cloud platform) to the guest (instance). config-drive-v2 was implemented
+ in Openstack Folsom release, and delivered as functional in 12.10 Ubuntu.

+ In order to support Ubuntu 12.04 cloud images running as a guest on
+ Openstack clouds that utilize config-drive, we need to backport this
+ function to 12.04.
+
+ This feature backport can be considered hardware enablement as it
+ enables Ubuntu images to work on new cloud platforms.
+
+ [Test Case]
+ Attached to this bug is an ISO that provides config-drive-v2 data.
+ Currently, if you attach the ISO to a cloud-image instance,
+ it will be ignored.
+
+ The new version of cloud-init enables data to be read from the disk.
+
+ The provided ISO file simply sets a password for the 'ubuntu' user to
+ 'ubuntu'. So, verification that the test worked is as easy as logging
+ in with 'ubuntu' and 'passw0rd', either via ssh or via the console.
+ Additionally, when the config-drive is not found, cloud-init will fall
+ back to the EC2 data source, and block boot for several minutes as it
+ waits. When the config-drive is found, boot will occur quickly.
+
+ To perform this test, download a precise cloud-image from
+ http://cloud-images.ubuntu.com patch it, and boot it with kvm.

[Bug 1111883] [NEW] Peer relation listed in relation-ids, but not queryable using relation-list

2013-01-31 Thread James Page
Public bug reported:

Charm branch:

Hook function:

##
# Description: Query Cluster peer interface to see if peered

relation-ids cluster appears to return cluster:11; however the

[Bug 1105171] Re: X.Org is stuck in a loop on resume from S3

2013-01-31 Thread Keng-Yu Lin
With 3.5.0-22.34 kernel (with fglrx), there is another way to reproduce
this. On the menu on the right top, choose logout, the monitor goes
blank and the lightdm login screen does not show.

From `top` can see the Xorg process occupies 100% CPU.

From the Xorg.0.log the last lines are:

[35.682] (II) fglrx(0): Shutdown CMMQS
[35.682] (II) fglrx(0): [uki] removed 1 reserved context for kernel

[Bug 672139] Re: Drag and Drop from Firefox to LibreOffice pastes HTML source

2013-01-31 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: firefox

- When you select text in Firefox and drag it over to an Openoffice writer
- window, one would expect the formatted text to be pasted over (like you
- do when you do a straight copy-paste). Instead, it pastes over the HTML
- source, which probably isn't what most people want.
+ 1) lsb_release -rd
+ Description: Ubuntu 12.10
+ Release: 12.10

- Not sure if this has been reported before (the closest I could find was
- a bug report on dragging and dropping images), but this is a nuisance
- because it's causing one of Firefox's most useful features to break.
+ 2) apt-cache policy libreoffice-writer
+ libreoffice-writer:
+ Installed: 1:3.6.2~rc2-0ubuntu4
+ Candidate: 1:3.6.2~rc2-0ubuntu4

I use the attached script to increase the window borders to 4 pixels in
ubuntu-2D and gnome-fallback. It must be placed in /etc/X11/Xsession.d/
and works in precise by writing configuration files in the directory

[Bug 1111073] Re: Elf

2013-01-31 Thread Ubuntu Foundations Team Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a
specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu
in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source
packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs
about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your
bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.
You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/073/+editstatus and add the
package name in the text box next to the word Package.

[This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

No it's not. I'm using Unity-3D, which is also the default in 12.04, and
borders aren't equal when it comes to resizing. It's almost imposible for
me to grab top and left borders, while bottom and right are pretty easy to
grab. I'd say there's at least a 3-4 pixels difference between the two
cases.

And no, it's not funny seeing how a basic usability like this is not being
properly addressed after six years.

  Hi.

No it's not. I'm using Unity-3D, which is also the default in 12.04, and
borders aren't equal when it comes to resizing. It's almost imposible for
me to grab top and left borders, while bottom and right are pretty easy to
grab. I'd say there's at least a 3-4 pixels difference between the two
 cases.

Code-wise its exactly the same for the right, left and bottom borders.

The top border doesn't have the padding as it already has a grab area on
the titlebar.

And no, it's not funny seeing how a basic usability like this is not being
 properly addressed after six years.

 Bug description:
This bug is fixed in unity-3d since ubuntu 11.04.
It still exists in unity-2d and will never be fixed as unity-2d is no
longer supported since ubuntu 12.10 (see comment #343).

   *

This should mostly be fixed for Natty and might get backported to
   earlier releases as well.

For Precise (12.04) this is again broken for unity-2d (as of 17.7.2012
unity-2d 5.12.0-0ubuntu1.1).
Note that if the window has a scrollbar, you can grab that to resize
the window. If not, you are stuck with the 1px border. Workaround: NONE
KNOWN (see comment 320)?

   *

   *Blueprint for Natty, Ubuntu 11.04:

   https://blueprints.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/packageselection-
   dx-n-resizing-windows

Work items1 * Make sure the new resize grip fits in current
applications; doesn't interfere with anything. We should make some noise
about this during the Natty cycle so people keep their eyes open and file
bugs.
2 * Invisible window resize area - around 3px invisible area to allow
resize on all sides.

   *

Working grip backported to gtk2 already available in ppa :
   https://launchpad.net/~bratsche/+archive/gtk

   *

   Workaround for Compiz/Unity: Alt+Middlemousebutton resizes a window
   most comfortably.

   Workaround: Edit /usr/share/themes/Ambiance/metacity-1/metacity-
theme-1.xml. Set the following values in frame_geometry_normal as
   desired:

   distance name=left_width value=3/
   distance name=right_width value=3/
   distance name=bottom_height value=3/

   Binary package hint: metacity

   - The issue has been an issue for users (especially of large) screens
for several releases- Trackpad users seem to be particularly impacted
by this- The issue appears to have been significantly aggravated in
Lucid by changing the border width from 3 pixels to 1 pixel

The window borders in metacity are far too thin to be used for
comfortable window resizing, and resize handles are not available in
all applications (or even most). In fact, of all the windows I have
open right now, not a single one of them has a resize handle. The
result is that I get a lot of misses when I try to drag a window
border, which usually results in my clicking on the wrong window
altogether. The best fix for this usability bug is to create an
invisible region around each non-maximized window about 4px thick
that can be used for resizing (in addition to the visible border). Or
perhaps there should be a border thickness option on the System
Preferences Windows dialog (although the default thickness should
still be increased considerably). Ideally all windows would also have
a resize handle but I realize that these have to be application
controlled (at least that seems to be the position of the metacity
   team).

[Bug 1006145] Re: Logitech Mouse not recognised on boot in 12.04 later

2013-01-31 Thread Vitaliy
The workaround from the post #6 did not work for me.
hid_logitech_dj is not in the kernel loaded list after booting. Also, it
doesn't appear there if I manually unplug mouse and plug it back for it to be
recognised.

Most likely, it didn't help because I have a wired Logitech USB mouse
(Logitech, Inc. MX320/MX400 Laser Mouse).

Is there a workaround for my case?

Thank you for your bug report. What login manager do you use? Do you
enter your password or use autologin? Did you change your user password
recently? Usually the keyring is unlocked by the login password, they
need to use the same password though (which is the default but things
can get out of sync if you change your password but the keyring one
doesn't get updated)

[Bug 879950] Re: pidgin not showing up

2013-01-31 Thread piratemurray
I don't get this any more with 12.10 and the latest Pidgin in the
repository.

The workaround mentioned in #20 is well known but means you have a
redundant entry in the tray. Workaround, but not a fix.

Anyway, can't say I've noticed this in 12.10.
