[Bug 1132359] [NEW] Gnome system monitor uses lots of processor
Public bug reported: Hello! I thought it might be something normal for a tool to see running applications and other live information about system to use 5-10+ % of processor, but since I recently tried Xubuntu and that script uses almost no resources, I made my mind to report it as a bug. It can either be fixed by changing what makes the default system monitor in Ubuntu consume so much of our processor, or change it from the distribution. It is true, the Xubuntu script is simpler, but the main part is the one showing processor&memory&etc. of the running applications, and that one is just perfect. Just now I installed the KDE tool, ksysguard. And this one consumes 1-2% of processor, compared to 5-15% of gnome-system-monitor. If the Gnome team does not find a fix for this, please to replace it with something that works. Ksysguard is really really good, a lot better. Thank you! [Bug 1082629] Re: software-center crashed with UnicodeDecodeError in _call_apport_recoverable_error(): 'ascii' codec can't decode byte 0xc3 in position 16: ordinal not in range(128)
I have updated from 12.04 to 13.04. I then tried to install "System Load Indicator" from the software center. I then receive the error shown above. In fact I am unable to install any software at all. There seems to be two issues occurring. 1. I do not have the correct user permission to install software 2. The error described above. I have had issues with sound as well. I had to manually add my username to the audio group, which fixed my sound issue. I am curious if issue # 1 is caused by the same issue. ***SOLVED*** kinda If I launch the software center from a terminal using sudo I am able to install anything as usual. I however do not know which group I need to add my username to resole this issue without using the workaround. [Bug 1127767] Re: Lightdm service does not run with fglrx installed
The issue seems to lie somewhere in lightdm. I was able to successfully build .deb packages for the fglrx drivers and install. Each time I installed it, on the next restart lightdm would exit with status one. Using the command sudo service lightdm start would end with the same results. The service would start and immediately terminate with a message identical to the CurrentDmesg.txt attached to bug. This could be done as many times as desired. I cannot find any indication in any logs as to what is causing this. All the logs in /var/log/lightdm appear to be blank when viewed with nano. At the current time I've installed gdm in place of lightdm and was able to login and start an xsession successfully. Any assistance in determining the issue would be appreciated. [Bug 1132345] [NEW] grub 0.97 and 2.00 installed in VMs causes confusion
Public bug reported: Using Ubuntu 12.04.2 Precise on amd64 with kvm_intel, libvirt and vmbuilder. After building a VM for raring using: $ sudo vmbuilder kvm ubuntu --flavour virtual --suite raring --arch i386 --hostname vm-ubuntu-raring-playpen --proxy http://10.254.251.1:3142 --libvirt qemu:///system --addpkg linux-image-generic --addpkg acpid I was trying to force the console to be text-mode by removing "splash", adding "nomodeset" and "GRUB_TERMINAL=console" to "/etc/default/grub" and then doing 'update-grub'. The changed settings weren't having any effect. I found that "/boot/grub/grub.cfg" (from grub2) was missing. Further investigation showed "/boot/grub/menu.lst" (from grub 0.97) was present, but didn't reflect the changes I was making to "/etc/default/grub". [Bug 1132338] [NEW] Merge gwyddion 2.31-1 from Debian
Public bug reported: Gwyddion 2.31 has been released upstream with many new features and updates. It's available on Debian (2.31-1) and this reports asks for a merge. Changelog: Released: 21 February 2013. Application Translations updated: Czech, French, Russian, Spanish. Libraries libgwyprocess: Bogus normalisation/possible crash in gwy_data_field_area_dh() in presence of mask on non-square area was fixed. distribution if the area contains no data due to masking. libgwyprocess: gwy_data_field_area_dh() returns a reasonable empty distribution if the area contains no data due to masking. libgwyprocess: Radial PSDF normalisation was corrected to be really sampling-independent and correspond to the formula in user guide. libgwyprocess: Double-free error if the initial Delaunay triangulation step fails was corrected. libgwyprocess: Swapped x and y coordinates of spectra in serialisation were fixed. libgwyprocess: Added brick (3D) data support backported from Gwyddion 3 development branch. libgwydgets: Crashes upon clicking colour selection buttons were fixed. libgwydgets: 3D view false colour axis shows overlay, not height units in the overlay mode. libgwyapp: Visibility of false colour bar and mask are included in 3D view settings saved by ‘Set Defaults’. libgwyprocess: gwy_data_field_distort() actually works for destination field of different size than source. Modules APE DAX (new): Imports APE Research DAX files. Nanomagnetics (new): Imports Nanomagnetics NMI files. VTK export (new): Exports fields as VTK structured grid files. Magellan (new): Imports FEI Magellan SEM images. Extend (new): Extends a field by adding borders using several methods. Brickshow (new): Added a simple module for loading, visualising and data extracting from 3D volume data (Bricks) GWYXYZF (new): Imports and export Gwyddion Simple XYZ files. Seiko: Files starting ‘NPXZ000AFM’ are recognised and imported. XQP phase files should be read with a correct value scale and units. Shimadzu: Files of different version than 2 are recognised and loaded. Omicron flat: Crash while reading files with up and down traces but no retrace was fixed. Createc: Conversion of raw data to physical values was corrected. Nanoeducator: Keep relative coordinates of datafields, Material description decoding from CP1251, Attempt to fix current scale in spectroscopy. Nanoscantech: Scan names of new standard (inside Attributes) supported, Units and scan names recoding from CP1251. Nanoscope: F-Z spectra are imported (experimental). Pixmap: Manual font size range is limited by zoom. Inset bar length is remembered and used the next time if possible. Raw XYZ: Tolerance for ‘regular grid’ (which is not triangulated) was increased to 5% of pixel size to help people with poorly rounded data. Edge: New Sobel and Prewitt classic edge detection functions. Drift correction: Correction can be applied to all compatible channels and channels can be directly replaced with corrected ones. Line layer: Thick line end markers are drawn correctly to image targets. NetCDF: GXSM file metadata support was improved, images are flipped when appropriate. Fit sphere: Units of resulting quantities are set correctly. Omicron: Abscissae of single point spectra were corrected to match SCALA. Graph fit: It is possible to plot the difference between data and fit to a new graph. Graph fit, FD fit and Critical dimension: Curve and controls were switched, controls should no longer jump around, interfering with selection. Merge: ‘None’ merge mode which does not do any correlation search was actually implemented. Critical warnings and wrong smooth merging for some image combinations were fixed. ‘Second’ really means the image selected in the dialog now. Other Crash on Win32 while loading TIFF images was hopefully fixed. Compatibility with GLib older than 2.26, accidentaly broken in 2.30, was restored. Desktop files in correct locations are updated with --enable-home-installation configure option. Standalone gwy python module on Win32 no nonger tries to load non-existent Gwyddion libraries. MS Windows executables are available also as 64bit. They are still somewhat experimental and do not include Python scripting support. ** Affects: gwyddion (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1132338 Title: Merge gwyddion 2.31-1 from Debian To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gwyddion/+bug/1132338/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1024482] Re: Mouse cursor theme does not change from default after login
OK, I think I've tracked down the cause of this bug. Thanks to MPX (multi-pointer X), it turns out that each X window (including the root window) may have *multiple* cursor icon settings. Traditionally, under the core X11 protocol, a window could only define a "standard cursor", which can be set by the XDefineCursor(3) function. However, XInput2 introduces the possibility of having multiple mouse pointers on the screen, and it allows windows to define a "device cursor" for each pointer individually. This can be done though XInput's XIDefineCursor(3) function. Crucially, if a given window has both a standard cursor and a device cursor defined, then the device cursor will override the standard cursor, at least for the particular "master pointer device" that the device cursor was defined for. Here is the relevant extract from the XInput2 protocol specification, which is shipped as /usr/share/doc/x11proto-input-dev/XI2proto.html in the x11proto-input-dev package: > Whenever device enters a window W, the cursor shape is selected in the > following order: > - if the current window has a device cursor C(d) defined for device, > display this cursor C(d). > - otherwise, if the current window has a cursor C(w) defined in the core > protocol’s window attributes, display cursor C(w). > - repeat on parent window until a cursor has been found. On a typical system with a single master pointer device, this means that once a device pointer is set, the standard cursor setting loses its effect. So, if something sets a device pointer on the root window, then any program that that tries to change the cursor icon by setting the root window's standard cursor (which includes xsetroot, XFCE, and GNOME) is sabotaged. And the final piece: if XInput support is available, GTK3's implementation of gdk_window_set_cursor will use XIDefineCursor. Since both unity-greeter and lightdm-gtk-greeter use gdk_window_set_cursor, that means both greeters set a device cursor on the root window. From that point on, xsetroot and friends are SOL. The behavior of the xserver is set in the protocol specification, so we can't "fix" this problem there. I think the best solution is to get unity-greeter and lightdm-gtk-greeter to use XDefineCursor instead of XIDefineCursor. This might be done by modifying gdk_window_set_cursor() or by modifying the greeters to use XDefineCursor directly instead of deferring to gdk. swiftgeek's approach might work too, but I think we can do something simpler than that. In the meantime, working around this bug is somewhat of a pain because (1) XIUndefineCursor doesn't seem to work correctly on the root window (probably an xserver bug, I'll follow up on that later) and (2) the xserver currently prohibits removal of the initial "Virtual core pointer" master pointer device, which is the pointer device that our greeters are setting a device cursor for. So, once the device cursor is set on the root window, I don't think there's any way to get the standard cursor setting to work again. A workaround is to (re)set the device cursor instead. My attached xiset.c will set the device cursor on the root window to whatever the default XCursor theme is. (I originally wrote it while trying to understand the behavior of gdk_window_set_cursor().) I set my desired Xcursor theme in ~/.Xdefaults and have my DE run this program at login. It does the job for now. I've also heard of an "xicursorset" tool floating around, which might do the job as well. ** Attachment added: "xiset.c" https://bugs.launchpad.net/lightdm/+bug/1024482/+attachment/3544110/+files/xiset.c -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1024482 Title: Mouse cursor theme does not change from default after login To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/lightdm/+bug/1024482/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
Re: [Mythbuntu-bugs] [Bug 1077536] Re: MythTV Backend Configuration Application shows Terminal Screen instead of Graphical User Interface
Dear Thomas Thank you for your speedy reply. It is much appreciated. I have searched the Internet and MythTV documentation and can't find this feature documented. I also can't find any documentation that would instruct a "newbie" how to disable this "feature". As much as I can determine, this is a new feature as earlier versions of MythTV (which I have demonstrated in circumstances where a network connection was not available), where the backend and frontend were on the same machine, did not require a network connection in order to operate. I suggest therefore that the team review this decision and that this criteria be abolished or at least that the requirement the network IF be up not be the default condition. In the main, newbies will use an all-in-one configuration, ie, the backend and frontend on the same machine. There is no need therefore for this machine to be on a network except if the user wished to either upgrade the system or use net-based TV. Persons who use a separate machine for a backend are on a high plane of expertise and so would/should be capable of working out how to configure a script such that the network has to be present for MythTV to function in those circumstances. I'd be grateful to hear the opinions of others on this matter. Possibly there is something that I do not understand. (I hope by raising this I am not distracting people from more important matters.) Once again thank you. Most MythTV installations have a network connection, which is why we wait for networking to start before starting the backend. You can easily remove that part of the startup script if you want. [Bug 1132287] Re: misbehaving firefox causes system to become unresponsive
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode. To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1132287/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package. [Bug 1132302] [NEW] drbd8-utils are not compatible with kernel 3.8
Public bug reported: Ubuntu Raring is going to ship with kernel 3.8, which contains DRBD v8.4.2 Unfortunately, the userland tools in drbd8-utils are still v8.3.13, which is 1 major version behind: they are not compatible with the kernel module. >From my testing (both in a vmware environment and a live-usb), loading the module and then using drbdadm to bring up a resource blocks for a long time and eventually leads to the message "No response from the DRBD driver! Is the module loaded?". Replacing the packaged tools with a locally compiled v8.4.2 totally fixes the problem.
