[Bug 1122030] Re: trap invalid opcode in libopenblas

2013-03-02 Thread Thomas U.
Hi!

I can try, but as far as I can see, raring currently only has 2.5.1:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/raring/libopenblas-base

But for what it's worth, I pulled the openblas source from github on the 15.
Februrary and that runs without problems.

[Bug 1124632] Re: Backspace key does not work anymore.

2013-03-02 Thread Th3Pr0ph3t
The new keyboard shortcut for this is Alt-Up.
Alt-Up browses to the parent directory just like Backspace used to do.

I don't like it but doesn't make it a bug.
I found this out by accident, a hint should be good for everyone when the
backspace is pressed, or even better, make the Backspace key work as it used to
before.

[Bug 1040557] Re: UEFI boot live-usb bricks SAMSUNG 530U3C, np700z5c laptop

2013-03-02 Thread hanishkvc
Hi Steve/All,

Summary of what I have understood after going thro related things over
the last few days.

NOTE: This is my understanding, anyone using this info, should cross
checking things on their own before experiment on their samsung laptop.
Unless others (who understand this fully) can also confirm my
understanding to be correct.

NOTE: I am looking at the possibility of installing Ubuntu with UEFI
enabled and ideally even Secure boot enabled. So my thoughts are based
around that. And also to try and ensure that possibility of the laptop
bricking is eliminated as much as possible.

There are potentially 3 known bugs in Samsung UEFI Firmware which can
trip up Linux/Ubuntu installation, they are

BUG_A) (As noted by Matthew Garrett) High probability of Corruption of
NVRAM / Firmware on using UEFI Runtime Service (RT) SetVariable
functionality

In turn This will be triggered in Linux if any kernel crash occurs, as
the pstore logic of efivars.c will try to write the crash dump to NVRAM.

POSSIBLE_SOLUTIONFOR_A) Now passing noefi kernel boot param will avoid
this direct corruption path in the latest linux kernels (which have the
noefi related bugfix - i.e which clears EFI_RUNTIME_SERVICE flag rather
than wrongly clearing the EFI_BOOT flag) .

However at this juncture I am not sure if the linux kernel's acpi erst
error logging functionality related pstore logic will trigger the same
issue or not as this logic is not disabled on passing noefi boot param
(However as uefi runtime service SetVirtualAddressMap is not called when
noefi is passed - may be it won't create a problem but I am not sure, as
I haven't dug sufficiently deep into uefi yet). So may be the safest bet
may be to disable pstore logic of acpi erst (apei) in the linux kernel
for now (This suggestion is partly due to my lack of knowledge wrt this
fully currently, as I haven't dug enough into uefi+acpi interaction and
their runtime environment [I don't mean uefi runtime service here] and
its implication wrt os runtime).

BUG_B) Existance of the Samsung BIOS's old SMM equivalent handshaking or its
vestiges in the newer UEFI firmware, and it leading to MCE.

Now the samsung-laptop module in the linux kernel is dependent on this old
mechanism for achieving its functionality, and this inturn would lead to the
BUG_A mentioned above in Samsung UEFI firmware, as it would trigger a MCE and
kernel crash dump.

POSSIBLE_SOLUTIONFOR_B) AGAIN the latest linux kernels have WORKED
AROUND this by disabling the loading of the samsung-laptop module, if
the uefi booting is used. NOTE that passing noefi doesn't interfere with
proper handling of this work around, as the linux kernel still knows
that it was booted using UEFI even if noefi is passed.

BUG_C) The UEFI RT GetNextVariableName service doesn't handle its input
parameters properly.

As noted by Jakob Heinemann during his exploration of the Samsung firmware bug,
passing a variable name size greater than 128 potentially returns a error from
GetNextVariableName (when in reality it shouldn't). However the Linux efivars.c
in the kernel is currently written to pass 1024 has the variable name size and
in turn there is no easy/direct way for a application using efivars to know
about any possible error encountered by efivars (what if EFI_DEVICE_ERROR
occurs or a buggy firmware craps out like in this samsung case). So that would
mean that on these buggy Samsung UEFI firmwares, a linux system will not be
able to read/get any variables. It will appear has if no variables are there.
INTURN the efibootmgr would potentially wrongly overwrite the first boot entry
used by the uefi firmware boot logic for uefi firmware module or some other os
or ...

NOTE: I haven't gone thro the efibootmgr code currently. If the
efibootmgr is not reading the kernel error logs to cross check for any
warning messages related to get_next_variable, then it ideally should be
updated to cross check for it. Also if efibootmgr (or programs which use
it) is currently not treating a empty efivars file (in turn boot entry)
listing has a possible corner case to be handled specially by cross
checking with the system user rather than blinding writing to 1st boot
entry, then it should be fixed to handle this corner case in a proper
user controlled manner.

POSSIBLE_SOLUTIONFOR_C) If noefi kernel parameter is passed, then as
efivars won't be loaded, efibootmgr shouldn't trigger this corner case.
However one will be required to handle the installation and suitable
configuration of the uefi boot entries to allow linux booting on their
own. Which will involve at a minimum copying of the Grub2 efi bootloader
to the EFI partition, and in case secure boot is required then even the
signed shim by Matthew Garrett or the new signed loader from Linux
foundation will require to be copied to EFI partition. Also secure boot
will require the equivalent/proper configuration of the
Grub2/elilo/linux kernel (signed/hash) to let the secure boot to

[Bug 964705] Re: System policy prevents modification of network settings for all users

2013-03-02 Thread Kent
To futher comment #32, I think the point here is to distinguish between systems
where
1. unpriveledged users should NOT be able to connect to or change which network
a computer is connected to --like servers, and
2. systems where an unpriviledged user SHOULD be able to change which network a
computer is connected to --like workstations managed by one person, and used by
another. That is, an admin sets up the networks, but the user should be able to
select which network to use in a given context, since there is no one else
using the machine (in most use cases).

I don't see these both fitting nicely under one default; is there a
setting somewhere that we might be able to utilise to switch between
machines where admin wants unpriviledged users to be able to connect to
the network, and machines where admin doesn't? Otherwise, it would seem
we'll make one or the other upset.

[Bug 1140716] [NEW] [regression] 3.5.0-26-generic CPU hangs

2013-03-02 Thread luca
Public bug reported:

I'm getting errors about GPU hangs every minute or so (usually only when
using FF and scrolling a webpage or something). I also get an annoying
ubuntu dialog saying there is a system error.

This didn't happen with 3.5.0-24-generic.

[Bug 1040557] Re: UEFI boot live-usb bricks SAMSUNG 530U3C, np700z5c laptop

2013-03-02 Thread hanishkvc
And just for completeness of info in my last post, use of refind boot
manager could be a usefull thing for people manually
installing/configuring the boot process in the uefi setup. However I
dont think by default it allows the secure boot chain to be passed down
to the kernel, unless one uses/installs ones own PK (I think called
custom boot mode at uefi firmware level) and suitable signing OR hash
configuration in case of Linux foundations signed loader.

[Bug 1138489] Re: [regression] Grid Plugin does not restore maximized windows correctly.

2013-03-02 Thread sampo555
Although this bug happens often with grid plugin, it's not the root
cause of this issue (there was a bug in grid that has kept this problem
hidden in the past). This bug can be reproduced with only core loaded by
maximizing and restoring terminal window using key bindings.

When the window is unmaximized, gnome-terminal decides to recalculate
its size (it reacts to focus in/out events, and when a keybinding or
restore button is pressed, compiz steals the focus). For some reason
it's using the maximized window geometry as a base of the process.

Also check out bug 1102024 (it's practically the same bug as this one
but with different way to trigger it).

I reported this once Before But Never heard Anything Back About It.
Your earlier bug was converted to a question as it was recognised to be more of
a support case than a bug.

Here it is with an answer:
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apt/+question/206907

Also you've specified this to be a bug with the ubuntu-docs package. It
isn't.

[Bug 552432] Re: Debug symbols for python module shared libraries (dbgsym packages) are not found by gdb

2013-03-02 Thread Oliver Gerlich
Same problem here on 12.04, for libavformat53-dbgsym
4:0.8.5-0ubuntu0.12.04.1 . I don't quite understand how gdb looks up the
debug library; but at least the .gnu_debuglink section in the installed
lib is weird:

$ objdump -s -j .gnu_debuglink /usr/lib/i386-linux-
gnu/i686/cmov/libavformat.so.53

/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/i686/cmov/libavformat.so.53: file format
elf32-i386

Contents of section .gnu_debuglink:
  34313238 63353066 61386161 35363030 4128c50fa8aa5600
 0010 61306332 36383061 61653835 39313465 a0c2680aae85914e
 0020 31336665 63342e64 65627567 13fec4.debug
 0030 3638cf88 68..

The section should contain the name of the debug lib, and its hash. In
this case it specifies 4128c50fa8aa5600a0c2680aae85914e13fec4.debug as
name (rather than libavformat.so.53.21.1 , which is the only file name
installed by libavformat53-dbgsym).

Maybe this is the same problem as described in bug 1040645 which is
reported and fixed for 12.10.

[Bug 1132338] Re: Sync gwyddion 2.31-1 from Debian experimental

2013-03-02 Thread Benjamin Drung
The merge proposal (gwyddion 2.31-1ubuntu1) was uploaded to raring-
proposed (it fails to build on powerpc). We can't sync gwyddion 2.31-1

available 2.31-1ubuntu1. Therefore I mark this bug as Invalid. Please
request a sync for the next Debian upload.

[Bug 320638] Re: hot-add/remove in mixed (IDE/SATA/USB/SD-card/...) RAIDs with device mapper on top = data corruption (bio too big device md0 (248 240))

2013-03-02 Thread Josef Hopfgartner
I'm using SATA drives for LVM on RAID 1. RAID is configured with
internal bitmap, so resyncing is quite fast.

In order to do the best kind of backup, I replace my drives to keep backups of
complete systems.
There is a very good reason for this, since in the case of a complete desaster
I simply take the last backup disk and use it in a working hardware.

So, sometimes it would be quite useful, to also use some USB external storage
to connect a hard drive.
But, because of this error, the whole procedure is not possible.

I know it works with eSATA,
but this error claims always with USB connected drives.

Using rsync is not as simple as using a hotplug script that initiates
raid resync.

I don't know, how it behaves with USB3.

[Bug 1140808] [NEW] Sync nautilus-image-manipulator 1.1-2 (universe) from Debian unstable (main)

2013-03-02 Thread Emilien Klein
Public bug reported:

Please sync nautilus-image-manipulator 1.1-2 (universe) from Debian
unstable (main)

Currently packaged version 1.1-1.1 has 2 severe bugs, which:
- makes the software unusable if the config file is edited manually (LP
#1030927)
- breaks the functionality to upload resized files to the Internet (LP #1100027)

These bugs render the package partially unusable.

Changelog entries since current raring version 1.1-1.1:

nautilus-image-manipulator (1.1-2) unstable; urgency=low

  * Fix 2 upstream bugs, patches already applied upstream and released in v1.2:
- debian/patches/fix-702044: Corrupted config file if width/height are
defined from keyboard (Closes: #702044)
- debian/patches/fix-702045: Upload to 1fichier.com not working
(Closes: #702045)

[Bug 1140837] [NEW] Identification of user by getlogin not 100% reliable

2013-03-02 Thread Jay Lawrence
Public bug reported:

Running dupload from a background service (Jenkins in my case) seems to impact
the functioning of getlogin resulting in dupload halting with the following
error

dupload fatal error: Who am I? (can't get user identity)
 at /usr/bin/dupload line 87

The fix to this really straight forward. Line 28 or so amend to:

my $user = getlogin() || getpwuid($) || $ENV{LOGNAME} || $ENV{USER};

[Bug 618060] Re: alsoft-conf labels have in them

2013-03-02 Thread Niko Mirthes
It would appear I've fixed this bug after a couple of days of learning
to use Qt Creator Designer. The three labels were not linked to their
respective controls, preventing the shorcut keys from working and
causing the ampersand (amp;) to appear in the UI. Patches attached
address the following:

main.ui diff:
Window title changed from oalsoft to OpenAL Soft Configuration Utility
Adjusted the size of the Frequency box to avoid obscuring the value
Connect each Qlabel's buddy to it's respective QObject

speaker.h diff:
Fix a warning about Q_INTERFACES missing QGraphicsItem

[Bug 656735] Re: alacarte needs to depend on gnome-panel

2013-03-02 Thread Fabounet
Now when we tell other people that bugs in open-source projects are
fixed rapidly, they can laugh ...

Seriously, Alacarte needs to have its own item editor, it's non-sense to
install a deprecated package to get the job done.

Just copy-paste the damn piece of code from gnome-panel into alacarte.

[Bug 1140857] [NEW] Synaptic crash GtkNotebook 0x13f24a0 is mapped but visible child GtkLabel 0x15f1620 is not mapped

2013-03-02 Thread MMlosh
Public bug reported:

Hello.

After upgrade to Ringtail and reboot I launched synaptic to remove usual
self-appointed junk and set the correct packages to be marked manual.

There was one entry named libexttextcat-1.0-0 in the category Status - Not
installed (residual config)
No version information or description (Probably a not-anymore-existant package)
Any attempt to select it would immediately crash synaptic.

There is no reason given on the console.
Only 90 times a line saying
(synaptic:17010): Gtk-WARNING **: GtkNotebook 0x1a934a0 is mapped but visible
child GtkLabel 0x1c92620 is not mapped

Relevant piece of strace (from the time between click on the entry and crash)

[Bug 1140581] Re: Brightness system settings do not work on Asus Eee PC X101CH

2013-03-02 Thread Nir Soffer
The problem is cause by gsd-backlight-helper - it query udev for
backlight devices, and then pick the first device with type
firmware, platform, or raw.

When running on this mahcine (Asus X101CH), it find these devices:

1. firmware: /sys/devices/pci:00/:00:02.0/backlight/acpi_video0
2. platform: /sys/devices/virtual/backlight/psb-bl
3. raw: (null)

Then it uses
/sys/devices/pci:00/:00:02.0/backlight/acpi_video0, becuase
firmware is prefered. This device does effect the display brightness,
unless the system is booted with acpi_osi=Linux
acpi_backlight=vendor(see above).

This patch change the prefered device to be platform, using
/sys/devices/virtual/backlight/psb-bl, which fix the brightness slider
in system setting application.

** Patch added: Experimental fix for system setting brightness panel on Asus
X101CH
