[Bug 1173759] Re: Ubuntu 13.04 can detect wi-fi but can't connect

2013-08-31 Thread ojc
Re #28.

The computer's been asleep overnight. When it woke up it had the same
symptoms. Repeated password requests and no connection.

I used my smartphone to change the wireless on my TP-Link_42DE2E to
Open. The Ubuntu machine connected. I then reverted the wireless to
WPA2-Personal. I went to Edit Connections and deleted both TP-
Link_42DE2E instances. I restarted the Ubuntu machine and attempted to
connect to TP-Link_42DE2E . This time it connected.

Next time it happens I'm going to try just deleting the TP-Link_42DE2E
without changing the network type to open.

This is a new problem for me. I've been with Ubuntu since 2009. I've had
13.04 since April and it's just started being a problem.
I don't know it any of this is any help to anyone. I'd like to think there's
someone working on this. There appear to be a number of similar threads about
it. It's a deal breaker for anyone. Wireless connection just has to work.

http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.11-rc7-saucy/, x86_64).

WiFi works as AP w/o errors about 2 days before the fault.

[Bug 1219379] [NEW] i386/amd64 conflict, preventing multiarch installation of SDL2_mixer

2013-08-31 Thread Nathan Coulson
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu Saucy Salamander (development branch)
Release:13.10

libmodplug1:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: 1:0.8.8.4-3
  Version table:
 1:0.8.8.4-3 0

Problem:

apt-get install SDL2_mixer-2.0-0:i386 SDL2_mixer-2.0-0:amd64

Fails as the dependencies libmodplug1:i386 and libmodplug:x86_64
conflict.

Both arch's install libmodplug to /usr/lib/libmodplug.so.1 (and other
overlapping files)

Tested under a debootstrap install of Saucy Salamander.

[Bug 144431] Re: gethostbyname() cant resolve names starting/ending with "-"

2013-08-31 Thread Adam Conrad
Your argument seems to be that if there's a "publicly available web
address", we should support resolving that, no matter what, right? I
could set up a publicly available website at "[wow-square-
brackets].sili.ca" today. Would that mean every OS that doesn't resolve
square-bracket-hostnames is now buggy? Or should someone tell me to
stop being silly and not do that?

You're welcome to take this argument back upstream to the bug there. If
they are convinced, fine. But I won't carry a distro patch for this,
and I would prefer that people who care deeply about this tell tumblr
and deviantart that they're breaking spec, rather than telling me that I
should care about their spec abuse.

When someone blatantly violates rfc822 or 2822 and postfix/exim/sendmail
reject those emails, do you file that as a bug too?

[Bug 1219332] Re: parole reports "Gstreamer backend error", "Configured videosink video is not working" in saucy

2013-08-31 Thread Richard Elkins
Stephen,

My motherboard is an Intel D2550MUD2. I know for a fact that the kernel
and X failed to detect much of its video capability. The kernel is
using a gma500_gfx module when in fact the Intel graphics is GMA3650
(Cedar View). X is using a modesetting driver, not an Intel driver.
For the most part, this works out okay for me and other Intel orphans.

I am sure there are many 'buntu users out there with kernel and X
detection failures of various sorts (older computers, older graphics
cards, etc.). It's a good thing that vlc is able to work-around this
automatically. But, parole is the default video utility in, at least,
xubuntu. So, it would be great if it worked universally out of the box.

I don't believe that non-programmer users will be able to deduce from
the anomaly-reporting pop-up box that the `parole --xv false` command or
manually setting property "enable-xv" to true in
$HOME/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/parole.xml will fix this
issue. I suspect that these folks will give up on parole rather quickly
and switch to something else that works like vlc.

Suggestion: Make XV support in parole disabled by default. Then,
everyone would get playback function working out of the box. People
with more advanced hardware and lucky enough to get correct detection
can google how to improve the quality of parole playback.

Richard

Re: [Bug 1219332] Re: parole reports "Gstreamer backend error", "Configured videosink video is not working" in saucy

2013-08-31 Thread Stephen Michael Kellat
In this instance, xv relates to directly accessing video hardware to
improve video performance. On some video hardware it does not play nice
from what I could find.

Good news is that it isn't a program bug but a configuration issue.
Even better is that the next step is for you to click the black
exclamation mark on top of a yellow circle to change status to Invalid.
This is something to refer later in September for documentation efforts
at this point.

[Bug 144431] Re: gethostbyname() cant resolve names starting/ending with "-"

2013-08-31 Thread Daniel Liebner
Tumblr also has hostnames that end in hyphens.

Regardless, if there is a publicly available web address at a given
hostname, albeit with an invalid hostname, this "not a bug" prevents
almost any program-level function from accessing said publicly available
web addresses. For example, curl, PHP, web browsers are all affected
because they utilize gethostbyname() somewhere in their process chain.
Do these programs need to stop using gethostbyname() and start adopting
a new method of resolving hostnames in order to access said web
addresses?

[Bug 1219332] Re: parole reports "Gstreamer backend error", "Configured videosink video is not working" in saucy

2013-08-31 Thread Richard Elkins
This made a difference:

  parole --xv false

After execution of that command line (disabling "XV support"), parole
was able to play that sample MP4 and others from the same URL.

What is "XV support"?
How is a user supposed to know whether or not to do that?
Is this something that the parole package should do automatically when
installed, at least, under some circumstances?

Okay, so you don't have a DNS issue there. I don't understand why it's throwing
up name resolution errors though. Could you try adding the podcast again and
seeing what error you get this time?

[Bug 144431] Re: gethostbyname() cant resolve names starting/ending with "-"

2013-08-31 Thread Adam Conrad
This bug is just as much not a bug now as it was when it was filed. If
anyone other than deviantart is advertising hostnames that start or end
in hyphens, I'd be curious to know. If this is pretty much just a
deviantart problem, has anyone considered talking to them about not
doing that? The fact that someone does it doesn't make it valid. You
can put literally ANY STRING YOU WANT in DNS, but that doesn't make it a
valid host name. Period.

[Bug 1219368] [NEW] 14e4:4320 Airport Extreme (Broadcom BCM4306) not working on iMac G5

2013-08-31 Thread Nikolai Alexihof
Public bug reported:

wlan0 worked approximately 3 months ago, when I last booted this system,
but upon updating and rebooting, my wireless NIC stopped working.

This is essentially identical to 951687, except that:
- it is still a problem, and
- Christopher M. Penalver told me to open a new bug for this problem.

1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'lsb_release -rd' or System
-> About Ubuntu

Ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS

2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy
pkgname' or by checking in Software Center

linux-powerpc64-smp 3.2.0.52.62

3) What you expected to happen

wifi to work

4) What happened instead

wifi does not work. wlan0 does not come up

[Bug 1219316] Re: Sync ctpp2 2.8.3-5 (universe) from Debian unstable (main)

2013-08-31 Thread Micah Gersten
This bug was fixed in the package ctpp2 - 2.8.3-5
Sponsored for Jackson Doak (noskcaj)

---
ctpp2 (2.8.3-5) unstable; urgency=low

  [ Vasudev Kamath ]
  * Update symbols file for all Linux architectures (i.e. kFreeBSD and
Hurd excluded).
Closes: bug#705135, #713175.
  * Set the ICONV_SUPPORT to off for kFreeBSD/Hurd.
Really closes: bug#705134. Thanks to Aaron M. Ucko.

  [ Jonas Smedegaard ]
  * Refresh patches with shortening quilt options.
  * Spoon-feed LDFLAGS in rules file (not in CMakeLists.txt via patch).

 -- Jonas Smedegaard Fri, 30 Aug 2013 10:25:21 +0200

ctpp2 (2.8.3-4) unstable; urgency=low

  [ Vasudev Kamath ]
  * Add patch 1004 to skip iconv on kFreeBSD and the Hurd: Fixes FTBFS.
Closes: bug#705134. Thanks to Aaron M. Ucko.
  * Use canonical anonscm.d.o URI for Vcs-Git field.
  * Add pkg-kde-tools for build-depends and include symbolshelper.mk
from pkg-kde-tools for generating symbols file.
  * Regenerate symbols file using pkg-kde-tools, this intermediate
upload will not solve build failure on non-amd64 architectures, this
build is just to collect build logs so as to patch symbols file
properly.
  * Drop the make rule to remove unneeded .la file. Use --exclude-la
option of d-shlibmove instead.

  [ Jonas Smedegaard ]
  * Add README.source emphasizing control.in file as *not* a
show-stopper for contributions, referring to wiki page for details.

2013-08-31 Thread amir
Public bug reported:

I gave the daily Ubuntu Desktop 13.10 iso a spin today and noticed that
after everything is fully updated with apt-get dist-upgrade, compiz now
performs very sluggish and goes almost 100% when doing anything on Unity

seen after today's apt-get upgrade on a previously-working 13.10 installation

I hadn't logged in for weeks, so not sure if the transition from
xserver-xorg-video-nouveau 1:1.0.8-0ubuntu3 to 1:1.0.9-2ubuntu1 was the
critical event.

[Bug 1219361] [NEW] Nautilus Bad Behavior With Many Items in Directory

2013-08-31 Thread zyodei
Public bug reported:

I am working with a directory with many files. Around 1000.

I am using Nautilus to try and move files into a subdirectory.

The subdirectory starts with 'M', so you have to scroll down several
screens to get to it.

Whenever I select a file and start dragging it to the subdirectory,
Nautilus refreshes the view, and reverts the vertical position to the
top.

This happens every time, before I am able to actually drag the files
into the directory. It only

In short, the simple, user/newbie friendly mechanic of 'drag and drop
the file into the folder' doesn't work on thumbnails view unless the
folder is on the first screen of the results in the parent folder.

This is in Ubuntu 13.04, I don't think any dmesg or system specs are
relevant to this bug, so I won't list them.

[Bug 1219360] [NEW] Keysym collisions make it impossible to create certain keymaps

2013-08-31 Thread Julian Yon
Public bug reported:

Some combinations of keysyms can't be used together in the same keymap
because they share the same lower 16 bits, which is used as the index
for the table. Attached is a patch which fixes that. Written against
rdesktop 1.7.1 as this is the version in Ubuntu, but appears to apply
cleanly to trunk. I've sent this patch upstream but am reporting it here
as well because movement there seems slow.

Ubuntu version: Ubuntu Studio 13.04
uname -a: Linux numenor 3.8.0-29-lowlatency #21-Ubuntu SMP PREEMPT Thu Aug 15
12:50:08 UTC 2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
rdesktop version: 1.7.1-1ubuntu1
What I expected to happen: Custom keymap works correctly
What actually happened: Some keys produced the wrong character because they
shared the same least significant 16 bits

As an example of a keymap that doesn't work without this patch, see my Colemak
keymap at:

[Bug 1202876] Re: unable to properly calibrate wacom tablet

2013-08-31 Thread Kingsley
This automatically fixed itself sometime in the last few days, and I was
able to calibrate it. Today, it decided to stop working again. :/

It seemed to happen after these updates:

Start-Date: 2013-08-31 17:06:14
Commandline: /usr/sbin/synaptic
Upgrade: libpanel-applet-4-0:i386 (3.4.1-0ubuntu1.1, 3.4.1-0ubuntu1.2),
dh-apparmor:i386 (2.7.102-0ubuntu3.7, 2.7.102-0ubuntu3.8),
gala:i386 (0.1-0~r351+pkg18+r2~precise1, 0.1-0~r353+pkg18~precise1),
apparmor:i386 (2.7.102-0ubuntu3.7, 2.7.102-0ubuntu3.8),

End-Date: 2013-08-31 17:06:54

I tried swapping gala out for xfwm4, but it doesn't change anything, so
perhaps it was just coincidence.

[Bug 1219357] [NEW] /etc/host.conf contains obsolete "order" option

2013-08-31 Thread Thomas Hood
Public bug reported:

The "order" option in /etc/host.conf has been inoperative for years. It
should no longer be included in host.conf on new installs.

In Debian 7 the "order" line is no longer included.

In Ubuntu 12.04:

$ cat /etc/host.conf
# The "order" line is only used by old versions of the C library.
order hosts,bind

No, that is correct. It is not in the desktop seed and we don't expect
it to be for 13.10.

Each indicator is built up of a set of actions, and then views on those
actions that are exported via GMenu over DBus. We export a different
view for each form factor, and also a view for the settings. We expect
to continue to modify the view for the settings and perhaps add actions,
but we don't expect to make feature changes the actions that are used in
the desktop views or the desktop views themselves.

The ones that should be on this list are indicator-location and
indicator-network who are not used on the desktop but on the phone
today. We hope to bring them to the desktop when they get complete
enough to cover all the desktop use-cases as well. But that's not going

[Bug 1219323] Re: Ubuntu One client doesn't match default theme

2013-08-31 Thread Quinn Balazs
First, could you upload a screenshot of the mismatch, so that we can see
whether it looks as it does everywhere or if this is a new thing that
has come up. Second, while it could and probably should be argued that
it should be changed, I can't weigh in on that either way until a post
of what it looks like against the Ambience theme is added. I am also
going to mark this as opinion as it isn't really a bug, more of a design
choice. But that cannot be definitively decided until we can see what it
looks like to you, so I am keeping this open until an issue is
definitively ruled out.

[Bug 1219332] Re: parole reports "Gstreamer backend error", "Configured videosink video is not working" in saucy

2013-08-31 Thread Quinn Balazs
There are a few simple things that might be going on, or there may be an
issue in parole. In order to isolate the source of the problem please
try the following, as they will rule out outside issues. I think from
the error code given that one of these (primarily centered around
gstreamer) should fix that for you.

Try running the following before opening parole (If it works you should
only have to do it once) "parole --xv false" Note the 2 hyphens.

If that doesn't work, try "sudo aptitude install ubuntu-restricted-
extras" which should fetch any missing codecs or containers and any
extras.

If neither of these work, then the problem is in Parole itself, as it
should be able to play most forms of combined video/audio files after
running parole --xv false

[Bug 1027799] Re: dia-gnome crashes when started with --integrated argument

2013-08-31 Thread Galland
I am using Xubuntu 13.04 on armhf architecture. Every other app works,
but with dia, output is:

user@home:~$ dia --sync

(dia-gnome:23147): GLib-WARNING **: A group named "gtk" is already part
of this GOptionContext

(dia-gnome:23147): LIBDBUSMENU-GLIB-WARNING **: Translation has an invalid
value 'I-->D' for default text direction. Defaulting to left-to-right.
The program 'dia-gnome' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)'.
  (Details: serial 9142 error_code 8 request_code 70 minor_code 0)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

Package: toshset-1.76-4
Environment: Ubuntu Saucy Salamander (development branch) Release: 13.10

I found /etc/pm/sleep.d/novatel_3g_suspend on my non-toshiba laptop.
It takes action on suspend/resume, meddling with usb bus=2 device=2 as if this
is definitely a novatel-3G thingy.
But nowhere in the script, nor in the pre-install script, does it check that,
or even check dmidecode to see if this is a target laptop.

How I installed toshset-1.76-4 I don't know - it's lost in the pre-history of
/var/log/dpkg*,
but it was probably mistakenly added as harmless-to-non-toshiba by some dpkg
Suggests/Recommends/Requires tag.
[looks, finds it's a dependency of acpi-support]

Is there some traditional way for scanning usb/pci for affected devices in such
scripts?
In my case usb/2-2 was unoccupied, but this could mangle hibernate/resume for
someone with a critical device there

Richard,

Could you please give the link to a single sample that can be focused on
in attempts to reproduce the bug? A 602 KiB list of samples is a bit to

[Bug 1025555] Re: Ubuntu i386 images are not compatible with recent (UEFI) computers

2013-08-31 Thread Jonathan
I have heard that for EFI systems "shim" is used. "Chroot"-ing and
installing shim should fix it.

I also have a solution for the GPT situation. Creating a new image for
"32-bit EFI systems" could fix the problem (separating BIOS images from
UEFI images).
