That's all fine I suppose, but my main concern is that a non-trivial
number of user will have issues upgrading to saucy because of this.
Numix is a fairly popular theme. A small part of the reason for this
popularity is that the upstream project has made it easy for Ubuntu
users to install via a PPA. AFAICT, shimmer-themes added Numix during
saucy's development. You make it sound as if people started packaging
it separately at some point after it was included in shimmer-themes,
while in reality it has been available as a standalone package for
sometime in the upstream's PPA. Normally, I agrees that it is a PPA's
owner's "responsibility to take care [their packages are] not in
conflict with packages in the official repositories," but it is also
the responsibility of the distro packager to work with the upstream.

[Bug 1069331] Re: [ASRock Z77 Extreme4, Realtek ALC898, Green Headphone Out, Front] Underruns, dropouts or crackling sound

2013-09-20 Thread Carlos Fornieles Montoya
Hi,

Actually I can no longer reproduce this issue. When I started
experiencing this I started using another soundcard instead of the
motherboard one. I upgraded the box to Quantal and I've been trying to
reproduce this since then and I've been unable to, hence this must have
been fixed at some point, presumably when I upgraded to Quantal.

Cheers,

Carlos

As far as I can determine, it is not a bug. If you click on that small

[Bug 1168139] Re: hostname: No protocol specified and Can't open display errors.

2013-09-20 Thread Bryan Fullerton
Thanks for taking the time to report this issue and make Ubuntu better.
To confirm, did you restart your machine after changing /etc/hostname
and /etc/hosts? Generally speaking changing the hostname without a
restart can cause the issues you're describing, because the previous
hostname is cached in the running applications (such as the graphical
display system).

[Bug 1228487] Re: Load the transmission-daemon apparmor profile in the upstart init configuration file.

2013-09-20 Thread David
** Attachment added: "apparmor profile for transmission-daemon."

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/transmission/+bug/1228487/+attachment/3832800/+files/usr.bin.transmission-daemon

** Description changed:

I am using the apparmor transmission-daemon profile attached to this bug
- report and on boot it is 'applyed' because the transmission-daemon can
- start up before its apparmor profile is loaded. This issue can be fixed
- by adding /lib/init/apparmor-profile-load usr.bin.transmission-daemon to
- the upstart configuration pre-start script. I have attached a patch
- which does exactly that.
+ report and on boot it is not 'applied' because the transmission-daemon
+ can start up before its apparmor profile is loaded. This issue can
+ normally be fixed by adding a /lib/init/apparmor-profile-load
+ $profile_name to the upstart configuration pre-start script.

[Bug 1228487] Re: Load the transmission-daemon apparmor profile in the upstart init configuration file.

2013-09-20 Thread David
Actually I am not sure that this bug is best fixed this way.
Unfortunately the pre-start script is not able to load the apparmor
profile because the upstart setuid and setgid directives have already
been applied. So instead this bug can be fixed by including a symbolic
link to the transmission-daemon apparmor profile in /etc/apparmor/init
/network-interface-security/ .

[Bug 1228487] [NEW] Load the transmission-daemon apparmor profile in the upstart init configuration file.

2013-09-20 Thread David
Public bug reported:

I am using the apparmor transmission-daemon profile attached to this bug
report and on boot it is 'applyed' because the transmission-daemon can
start up before its apparmor profile is loaded. This issue can be fixed
by adding /lib/init/apparmor-profile-load usr.bin.transmission-daemon to
the upstart configuration pre-start script. I have attached a patch
which does exactly that.

I think that you can observe ENOBUFS and target uevents being missed due to it
if you try below change. I confirmed using below change that wait-for-root
waits until SIGALRM if wait-for-root failed to receive target uevents. Current
code assumes that socket buffer size is large enough to queue target uevents.

Anyway, although the possibility that wait-for-root waits longer than it should
is remaining, the possibility that wait-for-root waits shorter than it should
was fixed.

Thank you.

RE: [Bug 1228459] Re: Item #1 states wrong side for icon

2013-09-20 Thread stan coleshill
Hi Doug:
Yes, I am referring to item #1. Can I ask you . . .am I mistaken or is this a
(small) bug? It is not a big deal, but for someone who is not very good with
computers, I could see how it would be quite confusing. I am just trying to be
a helpful member of the "community". I have taken quite an interest in these
alternative O.S's because of all the issues I have had and am still having with
Windows especially XP. I almost gave up on Ubuntu 13.04 because my perfectly
good Lexmark X2650 all in one just does not work with it at all. If you notice,
there are many people asking about this particular printer on the help pages as
well as myself before. Now that I have sorted out the problem with the printer,
I am quite pleased and intend to further educate myself about how all this
stuff works. The advantages seem to be many. Thank you for your comments. Have
a great weekend.Stan

[Bug 1228485] [NEW] smbd and nmbd can start up before their respective apparmor profiles are loaded

2013-09-20 Thread David
Public bug reported:

It is possible for smbd and nmbd to start up before their respective apparmor
profiles are loaded. This can be fixed by adding a
/lib/init/apparmor-profile-load $daemon_location to the pre-start script of the
smbd and nmbd upstart init configuration files.

[Bug 1228009] Re: Regression: Zebra striping is no longer present

2013-09-20 Thread Jean-Philippe Fleury
Same problem here. Here's a workaroud:

- Go to the Thunderbird profile folder (for example,
"~/.thunderbird/e7k4hcr2.default/"). If the folder "chrome" doesn't
exist, create it (so "~/thunderbird/e7k4hcr2.default/chrome/").

- In the folder "chrome", if there's no file "userChrome.css", create
it.

- In the file "userChrome.css", put this content:

#folderTree treechildren::-moz-tree-row {
background-color: transparent !important;
}

treechildren::-moz-tree-row(odd),
treechildren::-moz-tree-row(even) {

treechildren::-moz-tree-row(selected),

[Bug 1184165] Re: 03f0:1205 Scanner does not work: Simple scan gives a device busy error

2013-09-20 Thread Janos G. Komaromi
Christopher M. Penalver, testing update

(1) Booted into live DVD of Raring. Same problem, scanner does not work.
Apport collect did not work even after installing python - see attached
file of terminal dialogue

(2) Booted into live DVD of Saucy. Could not even find simple scan or
any menu. I correct my previous message, the Saucy install DVD does give
the option to try it, i.e. run a live DVD environment. I just could not
read it, because as I mentioned in my previous message, the explanations
were not readeable, just plane character squares. This is a bug in the
ISO image. Somebody selected the wrong font.

(3) I also trried to follow your instruction (quote: ...Please do not
test the daily kernel folder, but the one all the way at the bottom...),
and tested kernel 3.12 - see attached file. Saccer does not work.

Problems:

(A) Presently I can boot into three environments: Raring and Saucy on
sda, of which Saucy is extremely slow and useless. The third environment
is FC3 on sdb. The problem is that since I installed Saucy it looks like
grub only looks at the Sacy environment for cfg file. Can you please
tell me how to get rid of Saucy and make sure grub reads the Raring cfg
file at boot?

(B) After I installed kernel 3.12 for testing my Raring environment has
an error indicator on the update gizmo on top of the right hand corner
of my screen telling me to run the Package Manager from the right click
menu. The right click menu of that gizmo (sorry, I don't know the
official name panel? aplet? etc.) only gives me choices of More or
Remove. So can you please help me how to fix this condition.

Please, understand that I'm new to Ubuntu and am not familiar with
Ubuntu lingo, shortcuts, etc.

One final note: are you sure it is a kernel problem that scanner does
not work? Please, read my first message on top of this thread. lsusb
recognizes the scanner, sane-find-scanner finds it, but scanimage cannot
access it because it is "busy".

[Bug 1009312] Re: 10de:0426 GPU loads unreliably, possible kernel timeout

2013-09-20 Thread Kyle Auble
I was a little confused about exactly which version of the kernel you
wanted to test, but it's a moot point because all of the ones I tried
had the bug still.

I'm still using Ubuntu 12.04 so sudo apt-get dist-upgrade just keeps me
on v3.5.0-40, which definitely has the bug. I also tested v3.11-rc1
(built 7/14) off of the Ubuntu Mainline PPA, v3.11-rc5 (it had the patch
by Rafael Wysocki I mentioned previously), and v3.12-rc1 (the latest
version). Every single one showed the bug, which I confirmed by checking
the dmesg logs after booting up with a stable kernel. Actually, none of
those three kernels even made it to the login screen.

It's a little unnerving that whatever changes fixed the bug around May
this year have been canceled out since then. Seeing the glass half-full
though, once I have some free time, I can do a standard bisection to see
where the fix was knocked out. That might give us a little more data to
work with.

[Bug 1199877] Re: unity-panel-service pegs one of my CPUs at 100%

2013-09-20 Thread CarVac
I have been experiencing this issue too, but it seems to affect me more
severely:

While the panel is pegging one of my 8 (4 with hyperthreading) cores, if
I try to use the HUD or system tray applets, I have about 10 seconds
within which to launch a terminal and kill the process before my
computer becomes completely and utterly unresponsive for 40 seconds.

Anything that doesn't seem to require user input, such as music or video
players, keep on playing.

The cursor moves, but it doesn't seem to affect anything, until after
the 40 seconds are up, and all of my inputs (mouse and keyboard) from
that duration are rapidly applied in sequence. Does this happen to other
people?

While it is chewing up a core, the clock stops counting up (visible
because I have it set to display seconds), but I usually don't notice it
until it's too late.
