It's not a regression; users affected by this bug have a misconfigured
sysctl setup, which is non-fatal at boot but at package upgrade time causes
a package configuration failure.

We will be opening a new bug shortly to deal with this regression.

No, please use the existing bug report.

[Bug 868904] Re: Redshift fails to start with session due to geoclue failure

2013-10-16 Thread Mark Russell
Here's another debdiff with a patch to add the dependency _and_ change
the default provider in source from

#define DEFAULT_PROVIDER org.freedesktop.Geoclue.Providers.UbuntuGeoIP
#define DEFAULT_PROVIDER_PATH /org/freedesktop/Geoclue/Providers/UbuntuGeoIP

to:

#define DEFAULT_PROVIDER org.freedesktop.Geoclue.Providers.Hostip
#define DEFAULT_PROVIDER_PATH /org/freedesktop/Geoclue/Providers/Hostip

I'm not sure this proves anything but I also noticed that UbuntuGeoIP is not on
Freedesktop.org's list of providers:
http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/GeoClue/Providers/

Really, redshift should have some sort of dependency on a working
provider regardless. geoclue-ubuntu-geoip was only there on Unity-based
desktops because it happens to already be pulled in by indicator-
datetime and unity-webapps-service. The dependency was always missing,
it just happened to work as long as geoclue-ubuntu-geoip was there and
still working.

[Bug 1240628] [NEW] Update-Notifier does not consider auto-launch config option

2013-10-16 Thread mschaeffler
Public bug reported:

Update-Notifier does not consider auto-launch config option, but always
directly starts the update-manager.
This is really annoying, because
 1. The update manager is only visible in the overview of gnome shell but while
working there is no sign that updates are available.
 2. I do not use the update-manager but apt-get dist-upgrade, becazuse the
update-manager always sets all updated packages to manually installed!

Also confirmed the behavior. After the user types four digits, an auto-

[Bug 1240376] Re: Plymouthd constantly using 5% of CPU time

2013-10-16 Thread Steve Langasek
Kubuntu 12.04 uses kdm as its login manager; kdm is responsible for
stopping plymouthd before it launches X. Reassigning to kdm, since this
problem has not been reported when using lightdm.

This may be related to bug #982889; it appears kdm has not implemented
the corresponding changes to improve reliability of plymouth handling at
boot.

You can check whether the fix for bug #982889 solves this for you by
editing /etc/init/kdm.conf on your system and changing the 'start' rule
to read:

start on ((filesystem
   and runlevel [!06]
   and started dbus
   and plymouth-ready)
  or runlevel PREVLEVEL=S)

[Bug 1218322] Re: Can't set keyboard layout change to alt+shift, ctrl+shift, etc.

2013-10-16 Thread Ergys Dona
Confirmed by me too.

This is one of the simple things that are essential to most of the
people. Instead of taking the time to make a distribution usable and
then adding the candy, the focus seems to be on the candy and the core
features are not given the appropriate attention.

This bug is disastrous. Reported about 1,5 month ago. Just one day
before the release and no fix yet. I respect Ubuntu and use it for every
day work, but these things indicate how Canonical has gotten way of the
good road it used to be on and Ubuntu is having major issues. It's a
pity and absolutely embarassing.

covering Samsung MFP: http://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/Samsung-Laserdrucker

I will try this one with next release of saucy salamander.

[Bug 1234366] Re: cover art not loaded on phones without cellular data

2013-10-16 Thread Michal Hruby
With latest images, mediascanner will try to get the album art when you
connect to a network. You might still need to perform a search, or
restart the device once it does though. Can you still reproduce?

Extracting cover art embedded in the mp3s is not supported for now.

[Bug 1237392] Re: kernels following version 3.8.0-27 do not start

2013-10-16 Thread Joseph Salisbury
You mention that you compiled the kernel. The test kernel in comment
#12 is already compiled and would need to be installed with dpkg. The
bisect will require testing of several kernels. Some of these kernels
will have the bug and some will not. After you test kernels, I will
feed the result back into the bisect, which will tell us which kernel to
build next.

[Bug 782953] Re: Software Center doesn't detect changes in sources until update-apt-xapian-index is ran by cron

2013-10-16 Thread Bruno Nova
Ok, the branch was merged.

By the way Ubuntu Software Center developers, when the software sources
are edited from the USC, the caches of both apt and xapian are updated
correctly, but USC doesn't report the progress of 'update-apt-xapian-
index' anywhere. It doesn't even indicate that it is running (at least
in Raring).

[Bug 1238169] Re: 13.04 server: Fujitsu BX900/DX90 installation problem

2013-10-16 Thread Andy Igoshin
MULTIPATH

multipath works immediately and as expected. there are no any claims
to multipath itself (except Bug #1240047, Bug #1240049).

problems are begun if you configure more than one initiator for one
physical Emulex CNA interface. obviously this problem relates not only
to multipath but in general to large quantity of initiators configured
in Emulex CNA BIOS.

the cause of this problem is open-iscsi.
'iscsiadm -m fw' will show only some initiators configured in
Emulex CNA BIOS - only one for each physical interface.
'iscsiadm -m discovery -t fw' will return the same implicitly.

further it is more upsetting.

'iscsiadm -m discovery -t fw' or 'iscsiadm -m discovery -t st ...'
(each one separately) can't build working base of nodes.
it gets confused in multipath and generates wild mishmash of
initiators, targets and paths. please note that some of such paths are
incorrect and do not lead to corresponding targets.
so it is impossible to fully automate the definition of nodes, instead
it is required to edit /etc/iscsi/nodes and /etc/iscsi/send_targets
manually.

[Bug 1234357] Re: wpa_supplicant crashed with SIGSEGV

2013-10-16 Thread Kam Pow
Hey everyone, I received this crash after messing around with
/etc/nsswitch.conf I forgot the exact setup I had when the crash
happened. My original setup was :

Original(no crash)l: #hosts: files myhostname mdns4_minimal
[NOTFOUND=return] dns mdns4

Some change -(crash) .

New line(no crash): hosts: files dns mdns4_minimal
[NOTFOUND=return] dns mdns4

Now I'm not sure if this is what caused the initial crash or even that
it fixed it but it's worth checking out and seems pretty coincidental.

[Bug 1157643] Re: procps fail to start

2013-10-16 Thread Sidnei da Silva
So if I understand the whole context, procps start has always been
broken in lxc (and maybe openvz too?) because the apparmor profile
restricts writes to the kernel namespace. When called from upstart the
failure to start is ignored. dpkg is not as forgiving, so trying to
upgrade the package blows up because the service start step blows up.
This started happening when the update to procps landed in precise-
updates.

slangasek sidnei: workarounds are possible (e.g., editing /usr/sbin
/policy-rc.d to ignore requests for procps; or editing the config file
in the container to comment out the problematic bits). A proper fix is
going to take a bit.

[Bug 1154876] Re: 3.2.0-38 and earlier systems hang with heavy memory usage

2013-10-16 Thread Marc Hasson
Summary:

Tried 3.11rc7, very happy with how it behaved in our testing. Tried
this week's 3.12rc5, disappointed that a step backwards was taken
on that one for us. The difference for us was in the low memory killer
that was configured in the 3.11rc7 build but not the 3.12rc5 system.
Details below, as a consequence I'm tagging this bug with both upstream
3.11rc7 fixes as well as upstream 3.12rc5 doesn't fix!

Details:

I've now switched to a real hardware (Dell multicore) platform to make
sure no one has any doubts as to this kernel problem being an issue on
real hardware as well as my VM testbed. I can achieve the same hang
failure in the original bug description using either my 2GB VM or the
actual machine now.

I first reproduced the hang with a more recent 3.2.0-45 kernel on this
64-bit Dell hardware and then tried both the mainline 3.11rc7 and this
week's 3.12rc5 kernels from the URL supplied above by Christopher.

The good news is that I was unable to reproduce a problem using the
3.11rc7 kernel and the system was extremely well-behaved! That is,
despite running a very heavy load it remained responsive to new requests,
appeared to get more overall work accomplished compared to the 3.2 system
in the same time period, and had a minimum of kswapd scan rates in the
sar records. And no direct allocation failure scan rates at all.
Naturally, the system was SIGKILL'ing off selected processes periodically
but this is the price I'd expect for running the memory-overloading
test I have here and in my real-world environment. We much prefer
this behavior of individual processes being killed off, which can be
subsequently relaunched, rather than hanging or crashing the entire
system. Especially since it appeared that the SIGKILLs in my tests
were *always* directed at processes that were actively doing the memory
consuming work, so they were good choices.

I note that the processes SKIGKILL'ed off in the above 3.11rc7 system
were dispatched to their death by the low memory killer logic in the
lowmemorykiller.c code. The standard kernel OOM killer rarely, if ever,
was invoked. The 3.11rc7 kernel appears to have been built with the
CONFIG_ANDROID_LOW_MEMORY_KILLER=y setting which caused that low memory
killer code to be statically linked into the kernel and register its low
memory shrinker callback function which issued the appropriate SIGKILLs
under overloaded conditions.

The bad news is that the more recent 3.12rc5 kernel I tried did NOT
have the above CONFIG_ANDROID_LOW_MEMORY_KILLER=y setting and instead
relied upon just the kernel OOM killer. This 3.12rc5 system is behaving
similarly to when I turned off the 3.11rc7's low memory killer via
a /sys/module low memory minfree parameter. That is, the 3.12rc5 (or
3.11rc7 with low memory killer disabled) system experienced:

 1) Much longer, and with wide variance, user response times
External wget queries went from 1-5 seconds with the low memory
killer enabled during the overloading tests to 2 *minutes* without
that facility!

 2) High kswapd scans of .5M-1M/second in the sar reports
With the low memory killer, kswapd scan rates never exceeded a few K/sec.

 3) Fairly high direct allocation failure scans as well (K/sec)

 4) Multiple processes critical to system functions were OOM'ed
Management shell/terminal sessions that were idle, sshd, cron, etc.

 5) Even a panic in one test sequence
Kernel panic - not syncing: Out of memory and no killable processes...

The behavior of our test systems without the low memory killer
functionality is poor, with the system either crashing or providing
a poor (simulated) customer response. Either is better than the 3.2
hang I've reported, but not by much for our production/response needs!

I understand that there are concerns about the low memory killer
killing off processes before even getting to use the allocated
swap space on a system. I observed that as well, which for us was
fine. But I appreciate that it may not be desirable to have the
CONFIG_ANDROID_LOW_MEMORY_KILLER=y option for all folks' usage cases
as was done for the 3.11rc7 build. But what about supplying that low
memory killer as an optionally loadable module by simply building with
CONFIG_ANDROID_LOW_MEMORY_KILLER=m in the kernel/distribution package?
That way, those of us who desire to not use any swap area and prefer a
more responsive system overall will have a simple way to load that module
distributed with the then-current Ubuntu kernel. There are usage cases
where its better to shed load by killing off processes earlier rather than
degrade response time by using the swap area to preserve those processes.
The default would be to retain the current 3.12rc5 behavior: do NOT load
the low memory killer and in so doing experience the standard kernel OOM
handling. The later could be improved over time as a separate effort,
if needed.

We would consider the above minor loadable module configuration change as
a simple way to

[Bug 1234357] Re: wpa_supplicant crashed with SIGSEGV

2013-10-16 Thread Kam Pow
To try and reproduce this bug I went into nsswitch.conf and see which
line caused this and by editing the line to:

hosts: files dns [NOTFOUND=return] dns

After restart and after I logged in, the screen was just black. So i had to go
into the file and edit that out - restart and the system started up fine.
I made one more change to it and now the line is:

hosts: files dns

It seems to have made my connection alot more stable but I'm not going
to try and mess around with it anymore, it seems that I may have some
disk errors on my brand new hard drive. By the way, this is the conf
file for debian avahi-daemon I think.

[Bug 1239893] Re: PPAs added using GUI Software and Updates have an extra space added to repository line

2013-10-16 Thread Brian Murray
** Description changed:

When I try to add a new PPA repository using Software and Updates gui
the repository is added but software-properties-gtk adds an space to the
  line on /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ppa-name.list

  darkhole@devolo:/etc/apt/sources.list.d$ cat libreoffice-ppa_-saucy.list
  deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/libreoffice/ppa /ubuntu saucy main
  # deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/libreoffice/ppa /ubuntu saucy main

The extra space is after the ppa word.
  ppa file should be:

  deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/libreoffice/ppa/ubuntu saucy main
  # deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/libreoffice/ppa/ubuntu saucy main

Using CLI method works fine (sudo add-apt-repository)

I'm using Ubuntu 13.10 with lastest updates. I already tried multiple
  PPAs, same problem.

  ProblemType: BugDistroRelease: Ubuntu 13.10
  Package: software-properties-gtk 0.92.27
  ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 3.11.0-12.19-generic 3.11.3
  Uname: Linux 3.11.0-12-generic x86_64

SystemImageInfo: Error: [Errno 2] No existe el archivo o el directorio:
'system-image-cli'
UpgradeStatus: Upgraded to saucy on 2013-01-20 (267 days ago)

+ IMPACT:
+ It is not possible to use a PPA added using the form ppa:lpuser/ppaname using
software-properties-gtk as an extra space is inserted in the sources line for
the PPA. This was due to the dropping of a strip() between versions 0.92.26
and 0.92.27. The change just adds the strip() back.
+
  TEST CASE:

  1. Open Software Updates
  2. Go to Other Software tab
  3. Click on Add...
  4. In the APT Line Textbox write the PPA repository (example:
ppa:libreoffice/ppa)
  5. Click on Add Source button
- 6. Check the contents of the file created on
/etc/apt/sources.list.d/ppa-name.list, you'll notice an a space between
+ 6. Check the contents of the file created on
/etc/apt/sources.list.d/ppa-name.list, you'll notice an a space between
ppa /ubuntu. Additionally the ppa-name.list file with have an underscore so
ppa-name_.list.

[Bug 1196051] Re: smart-scopes: Software center results do not show up in the home-scope

2013-10-16 Thread manny
@Pawel Stolowski (stolowski)

Hi, I don't think you understood correctly.

This not about suggestions included in the home lens all the time.

The topic at hand is Search results. They are not smart because
they're not returning anything useful to the user when you type in
Steam, Gimp, chromium, etc.

Smart scopes right now is only returning A LOT of irrelevant stuff with
these searches, so, confusing more the user / consumer.

This totally goes against the spec:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SmartScopes1304Spec

Rationale
The driving factors behind the changes are the continual improvement of the
Dash as a place for surfacing useful content, whether it’s local or remote, and
a desire to take advantage of the amazing work done by contributors in building
up a large amount of Scopes for the Dash.

The features break down as:

Ability for the Home Master Scope to show a mixture of ranked results from the:
default scopes
some of the installed scopes
remote scopes (scopes run on the server)
The Dash gathering and posting metrics to the Smart Scopes Service, so we can
produce better results for queries.
The Smart Scopes Service being able to give ranked list of Scopes to present to
the user.
The goal of the 100 Scopes project and of Ubuntu in general is to provide lots
and lots of scopes, and there should be lots and lots more in the future for
every data source that anyone might want. These scopes should all be in Ubuntu
and ready to surface appropriate content in the Dash. The Ubuntu experience
would be compromised if all those scopes were running all the time, though; the
goal of the Smart Scopes project is to intelligently decide, for a given query,
which scopes are likely to be most relevant to that query so that those scopes
can be chosen to be started and return results. Users can of course explicitly
choose scopes that they want used in the query to override the suggestions from
the Smart Scopes service.

[Bug 1240376] Re: Plymouthd constantly using 5% of CPU time

2013-10-16 Thread LeonMaxx
Forgot to mention in report, I used Kubuntu backports ppa to update KDE
on my installation.

I changed 'start' rule in /etc/init/kdm.conf to:

start on ((filesystem
   and runlevel [!06]
   and started dbus
   and plymouth-ready
   and (drm-device-added card0 PRIMARY_DEVICE_FOR_DISPLAY=1
or stopped udev-fallback-graphics))
  or runlevel PREVLEVEL=S)

This did'nt changed anything, plymouthd is still eating 5% of CPU on
background.

[Bug 896595] Re: Ubuntu does not remember LID brightness

2013-10-16 Thread Dmitry Savin
It looks like feature is implemented in systemd = 209 and it stores screen
backlight brightness for the whole system (not per user).
The attached patch allows you to restore backlight for each user separately in
gnome-settings-daemon 3.8.5 for Ubuntu 13.10.

[Bug 1240675] [NEW] lightdm 1.8.2-0ubuntu1 failed to upgrade: lightdm.postinst still chokes on /var/lib/lightdm/.gvfs

2013-10-16 Thread Christian Kroll
Public bug reported:

This happened while upgrading from 13.04 to 13.10 via aptitude. The
post-installation script of lightdm 1.8.2-0ubuntu1 tries to change the
owner of the directory /var/lib/lightdm recursively. Unfortunately, this
directory harbours a Gvfs related mount point (/var/lib/lightdm/.gvfs)
whose owner can't be changed this way. The post-installation script
exits with an error, leaving lightdm unconfigured.

Workaround: Unmount /var/lib/lightdm/.gvfs manually and restart the
dist-upgrade.

I experienced the same error while upgrading from 12.10 to 13.04. Do you
guys actually read the bug reports?

[Bug 1240674] [NEW] high CPU load

2013-10-16 Thread Rolf Leggewie
Public bug reported:

I've moved my main machine from an ASUS 1001P netbook to a Lenovo
Thinkpad X200 Tablet and continue to experience high CPU load from Xorg.
In case of the 1001P , I had reported this as bug 1087535. I am opening
a new ticket since the underlying hardware changed. When moving to the
new machine I simply swapped the HD out of the old and into the new
machine. I am still trying to figure out what is causing these high
loads of 100% for one core. It seems to me that network activity is a
contributing factor, particularly if the network is unstable. I believe
many open tabs in FF lead to this situation.
