[Bug 1234400] Re: Cannot log in users if their Xauthority file is corrupt.

2013-10-30 Thread Charles Jie
I've just experienced the same story as Mr. Bruno Nova (brunonova). I
spent a whole day to shoot the trouble and identified that it's about
.Xauthority.

I tracked the /var/log/lightdm/lightdm.log and looked into my
.Xauthority. I found it contained two entries:

snow/unix:1 MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 f8aa6a272ab2e68533175967a9e5d09d
snow.mydomain.com.tw/unix:0 MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1
1e9a7aeba63b74bef069a3629fe3e80a

Removing the 2nd entry, which should be 'snow' instead of
'snow.mydomain.com.tw', made my system recover and logs me in again.
(Usually I am the only user of this machine. The :1 entry is created when I
successfully login with a new test account, and switch to login my normal
account.)

I don't know when it was touched and by whom. I have tried to
reconfigure postfix the other day. I have changed my /etc/hostname from
snow to snow.mydomain.com.tw, but I changed it back later... I think
short hostname is better for my administration.

Such condition rarely happens. It looks .Xauthority is seldom updated
except necessity. However it(the greeter?) could be more robust for such
cases.

[Bug 1245315] Re: alacarte fails to write a proper "Categories=<>; " line to .desktop files

2013-10-30 Thread Leo H
This issue finds its roots in a problem with the creation and deletion
of Applications Menu (aka Main Menu) entries which is explained on:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alacarte/+bug/1245300

Comment #2 there explains the motivation for the present submission in
greater detail. It appears not related or limited just to Xfce.

Specifically, the key issue of the present submission centres on giving
the user GUI-based full control through alacarte to configure the
desired allocation of individual menu entries (launchers) to the
Application Menu categories. At present, this can only be fully achieved
by manually editing .desktop configuration files.

Note: Clearly, there is no intention (nor any need) to deviate from the
standard menu specifications. It is merely a matter of fully enabling
what goes where in the Applications Menu across (as opposed to within)
the various menu categories under GUI-based user control.

Re: [Bug 732677] Re: bcmwl 5.100.82.38+bdcom-0ubuntu2 not work on BCM4311/4312

2013-10-30 Thread Chris Hermansen
Hi Christian;

For me the b43 installer in the repos does the trick. One must also
manually turn on the wifi with the Fn-key switch.

As pointes out above the version numbers in the title may not be current;
there are also many related bugs (although I disagree which are
duplicates); and the "real problem" appears to be that whatever code
decides which driver to use is jncorrect.

Also, for awhile at least the non-working driver was causing the whole
networking stack to crash though I think that is not the case in 13.10.

For clarity I have an inspiron 1501 with the b43 driver running fine on the
4311 device.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.

[Bug 1245300] Re: alacarte does not delete deleted application menu entries

2013-10-30 Thread Leo H
Hi Jasper

Thank you for this very clear explanation of alacarte's behaviour.

Also great that you are willing to give the locally-stored .desktop
files in /home/<>/local/share/applications/ more meaningful file names.

There is one issue with which the menu specification you quote above
does not deal. In our case, it arose because the newish Nemo File
Manager (installed after the rather catastrophic functionality stripping
in Nautilus, its parent) does not install any .desktop file in the
system or user directories (bug reported on the Linux Mint launchpad
site).

We therefore created a menu entry for Nemo under the Applications
category of the Applications Menu through alacarte. But it did not show
up there, nor in any other menu category of the Applications Menu. So we
deleted it and tried again – same result.

Ultimately after several more tries followed by some more searching, it
proved to be in the Other category of the Applications Menu, which
itself on our systems is set as hidden because all useful entries there
are already shown under other categories.

This placement in Other proved to be prescribed behaviour according to
freedesktop.org, because that is the default placement if there is no
"Categories=<>;" attribute in a .desktop file or if the value of the
"Categories=<>;" attribute is not recognized. And alacarte does not
write a "Categories=<>;" attribute, even if a new menu entry is created
manually within a given menu category of the Applications Menu. And
without that attribute, alacarte also does not allow drag+drop of the
newly-created menu entry from Other to a more specific and appropriate
Applications Menu category.

Hence the two issues raised, ie the one here and the one at
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alacarte/+bug/1245315).
Specifically:

The manual entries were not potentially useful amended copies of
.desktop entries already present at a higher level in the system
directories. And the delete instruction was meant actually to delete
them, not to hide them. Instead, they merely accumulated in /home/... as
hidden.

Clearly therefore, as this instance demonstrates, a true delete function
in alacarte of local (/home/...-based) .desktop files – in addition to
hide – is useful.

It does not hurt, as a normal user without root privileges cannot add,
change or delete any .desktop files outside of /home/... anyway. (And a
user adopting root privileges should take responsibility for his own
deeds.) Any superfluous .desktop files can only ever be created by the
user through alacarte in /home/...

So, even with true delete functionality in alacarte, the .desktop
entries present in the system dirs can only ever be hidden. And, as
system and local .desktop files are inversely hierarchically merged to
make up the Applications Menu as it appears on the desktop, they will
always remain visible in alacarte but marked as hidden, as per menu
specification.

And, as to the second issue, it would clearly be useful if alacarte
could write the "Categories=<>;" attribute of .desktop files.

(We ultimately had to resort to manually editing the .desktop files to
get the Nemo launchers in their proper category within the Applications
Menu on our systems. But this we only could do with some confidence
after studying the pertinent freedesktop.org specifications – not quite
a recommended route for the average computer user.)

Either this could be automatic in alacarte, reflecting the Applications
Menu category in which a menu entry is actually created or to which it
is moved by drag+drop.

Alternatively, the Categories parameter could be presented to the user
in the New Item dialog and in the Properties dialog in alacarte, for
example with a drop-down list of available choices.

But of course, if, according to the menu specification, there is another
mechanism for the user to determine into which menu category of the
Applications Menu a menu entry is placed (see your reply to launchpad
submission #1245315), then that is just as good. The only key thing is
that, at present, the user has no control in the matter, except by
manually editing configuration files.

I really apologize for the length of this comment, but I hope that it
helps better to explain the motivation behind the two submissions.

[Bug 1246588] [NEW] Dejavu fails to backup with 500 error when trying to save backup to Ubuntu One

2013-10-30 Thread Alexander Lewoczko
Public bug reported:

Whenever a backup is started, either scheduled or manualy iniciated,
Dejavu always fails when it comes to the point where it needs to send
the file to Ubuntu One. All available system updates are installed and
bug happens regardless of the fact. Backup file sizes are small >10GB.

Before installing the most recent release of Ubuntu via Software
Updater, Dejavu worked flawlessly.

Side note:
Not sure if this counts as a security vulnerability or not, however I assume
that catagory relates to viruses, malware, hackers and the such and rather not
the inability to create system backups. Either way, not sure.

[Bug 1246587] [NEW] no audio on Samsung Chromebook unless I edit /etc/pulse/default.pa

2013-10-30 Thread Hans-Christoph Steiner
Public bug reported:

On a Samsung Chromebook 5 running Ubuntu/saucy, the audio does not work
at all. I found two things on the Debian wiki that made it work for me:

https://wiki.debian.org/InstallingDebianOn/Samsung/ARMChromebook

(In Ubuntu, I've mounted the ChromeOS system on /media/root-a.)

 1. copy some alsa support files from Chrome:
 cp /media/root-a/usr/share/alsa/ucm/DAISY-I2S/HiFi.conf
/usr/share/alsa/ucm/DAISY-I2S/
 2. edit /etc/pulse/default.pa to add this line:
 load-module module-alsa-sink device=sysdefault

Then I rebooted and I had working audio! It would be great if this
could be included by default! This laptop runs XUbuntu quite nicely,
and costs US$250!

 /media/root-a/usr/share/alsa/ucm/DAISY-I2S/HiFi.conf is attached.

Pressing ESC at start, I can see ubuntu (which was automatically added

[Bug 1244895] Re: I was upgrading Ubuntu from 13.04 to 13.10

2013-10-30 Thread Carlos Expósito Rosales
http://askubuntu.com/questions/360810/removing-broken-packages-on-
distro-update-13-04-to-13-10/360889#360889

[Quote from page above]

sudo apt-get install ppa-purge
sudo ppa-purge xorg-edgers

One of my laptops worked after this. However on another laptop this
didn't seem to fix the problem. Checking the log file /var/log/dist-
upgrade/main.log I noticed that the error hadn't changed, I was still
seeing a failure like:

2013-10-28 14:38:03,043 DEBUG Installing 'xserver-xorg-video-all' (Distro
KeepInstalledPkgs rule)
2013-10-28 14:38:03,518 ERROR Dist-upgrade failed: 'E:Unable to correct
problems, you have held broken packages.'
So I simply uninstalled the offending package and tried the upgrade again:

sudo apt-get remove xserver-xorg-video-all
sudo do-release-upgrade
and the upgrade was able to continue successfully this time.

[Bug 1246583] [NEW] All hotkeys of LibreOffice don't work in non-English keyboard layout

2013-10-30 Thread Adnan Quaium
Public bug reported:

Hotkeys (Ctrl+b, Ctrl+s etc) in LibreOffice are language dependent and
work in English language only. While writing in any other language i.e.
any Cyrillic, it's impossible to use hotkeys, they just don't do
anything. Switching to English input language enable hotkeys once again.
This is very frustrating as user needs to switch language to save
document, to make it bold, or italic, etc.

This was not experienced in Ubuntu 13.04.

Steps to reproduce:
1. System Settings > Text Entry.
2. Add another keyboard layout beside English [In my case it is Bengali
(Probhat)]
3. Now launch Writer.
4. Switch the keyboard layout from English (US) to Bengali (Probhat) by
pressing Ctrl+Space.
5. Press Ctrl+B to change font weight to bold.

Error:
Font weight does not get changed.

Expected:
Font weight should change to bold.

Note:
none other system hotkeys work as expected. I.e. Ctrl+s to save, or Ctrl+b to
subscript, or Ctrl+i to italic etc.

Workaround:
The only way is to -
1. change the keyboard layout to English
2. then press desired hotkey
3. then switch keyboard layout back to Bengali.

The issue is critical, as it make writer very slow for keyboard-only
typing.

What is the state here?

This issue still exists with a fresh install of 12.04.3 and 13.10. The
default used driver is bcmwl but bcm4311 does not work with it.

[Bug 1208019] Re: Eclipse menus doesn't show up in Saucy

2013-10-30 Thread Marc-Andre Laperle
Sebastián, which eclipse.desktop file did you modify? The one from the
Ubuntu Eclipse package or did you create your own? Ubuntu only packages
Eclipse 3.8 so if you want to use kepler (4.3), you have to download,
extract it manually (from the sound of it you already did that) then you
need to create your own .desktop file that points to the executable,
with the same menu workaround. You can drag that new .desktop file to
the launcher.

The splash screen I believe got fixed recently in the upcoming version
4.4 because it looks fine with the latest build for me but not earlier
versions. I'll poke around to see if the fix can be backported to the
4.3 stream but this is a bit off-topic...

I think a good temporary solution for the menu would be to fix the
blacklist so Eclipse is blacklisted again at the "program name" level so
that both the Ubuntu package and the eclipse.org packages have a working
menu again. But from what I understand of the problem, it would only
workaround the issue for Eclipse products that have "eclipse" or
"Eclipse" has the executable name and not the other products that have a
different executable name (Aptana? Dart?). Still, that would mean most
people won't have to apply a workaround manually which is a big win IMO.
I just need a few spare hours to verify all this and push a fix ;)

[Bug 1121874] Re: MySQL launch fails silently if < 4MB of disk space is available

2013-10-30 Thread Dave Chiluk
** Branch unlinked: lp:ubuntu/quantal-proposed/mysql-5.5

** Branch unlinked: lp:ubuntu/precise-proposed/mysql-5.5

** Branch unlinked: lp:ubuntu/raring-proposed/mysql-5.5

** Branch unlinked: lp:ubuntu/saucy-proposed/mysql-5.5

** Description changed:

  [Impact]
MySQL will not launch if less than 4MB of disk space is available:

  /etc/init/mysql.conf:
  LC_ALL=C BLOCKSIZE= df --portability /var/lib/mysql/. | tail -n 1 | awk '{
exit ($4<4096) }'

This behaviour is OK, but it should not stop silently but report an
error message so that the admin knows why it did not start.

  [Test Case]
  1) Prep system to have 4MB disk space
  2) Attempt to start mysql server
  3) Silent fail with upstart

  [Regression Potentional]
- This fix is in sysv script but was never carried over to upstart. Regression
minimal as no code changes were made.
+ Possible regressions may include mysql failing to start. As the upstart job
has been modified.

[Bug 1244619]

2013-10-30 Thread Gleixner-o
Best workaround:
Add mozilla repo:
sudo zypper ar -f
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/mozilla/openSUSE_12.3/ mozilla_OS123

Update TB:
sudo zypper install MozillaThunderbird-24.1.0-6.1.x86_64

(do the vendor change)

Restart TB, update lightning plugin. Then it works again.

[Bug 1002008] Re: 8086:0888 iwlwifi intermittent loss of connectivity

2013-10-30 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Leif Halldor Asgeirsson, as per
http://download.lenovo.com/express/ddfm.html an update is available for
your BIOS (2.54). If you update to this following
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BiosUpdate , does it change anything?

If not, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the output of
the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so
posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful.

For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette
.

Thank you for your understanding.

[Bug 1237051] Re: 8086:0888 [Lenovo ThinkPad Edge S430] Centrino Wireless-N 2230: 802.11n not working

2013-10-30 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
khink, did this problem not occur in a release prior to Raring?

** Description changed:

- 802.11n networks don't show up in the network manager.
+ On my Lenovo Thinkpad Edge S430 802.11n networks don't show up in the
+ network manager.

With N-band enabled, i see a lot of "Tx excessive retries".

WORKAROUND: Disable N-band explicitly in /etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi.conf.
+
+ 3) Regarding your wireless Access Point (AP): A) What is the AP
manufacturer, model, and firmware version? Mikrotik OmniTik UPA 5hnd
+ B) What wireless connection type are you using (e.g. 802.11n, 802.11g,
etc.)? Only 802.11n has a problem.
+ C) Encryption Type (ex. WEP, WPA2-PSK TKIP/AES)? WPA2
+ D) MAC Filtering: None, anyone with password can connect.
+ E) QoS/WMM Don't know - what is it, how do i find it?
+ F) Beacon Interval Don't know - what is it, how do i find it?
+ G) Router Internal Firewall Disabled.
+ a) If you change any of the settings above does it change anything?
Haven't tried and i'm not at liberty to do so.
+ 4) Does another wireless device tested with the AP have the same problem as
the hardware you initially reported with? Not to my knowledge.
+ 5) What is the distance of the wireless device from AP? About 5m.
+ 6) What is the number and type of obstructions between your device and the
AP? One door.
+ A) If you bring the device close to the AP and eliminate obstructions,
does this change anything? No.
+ 7) Does the issue occur with different APs? Yes. I first noticed it at the
workplace, which the data in this comment is for, but recently when i was at a
conference, i noticed other people could "see" an N-band network while i
couldn't.
+ 8) Is it a regression (e.g. did the problem happen in a prior Ubuntu
release)? I don't know that.
+ If so, what release specifically did it last work with?
+ If you do not know, could you please test for this in the earliest
release of Ubuntu that is supported as per Ubuntu Releases?
+ 9) Does this problem occur in the newest mainline kernel following
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds? Please mention what specific
version of the mainline kernel you tested with in your report. Latest tested is
v3.12-rc4, while latest available is 3.12-rc7.
+ If the mainline works, does the Ubuntu provided stable compat-wireless
backport work following
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LinuxWireless#Compat-wireless_in_Ubuntu? Please
mention in your report the specific version you tested.
+ If the mainline does not work, could you please test upstream's
compat-wireless backport via
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LinuxWireless#Compat-wireless_from_upstream?
Please mention in your report the specific version you tested.
+ 10) Does ndiswrapper work following
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/Ndiswrapper? Please mention
what specific version of ndiswrapper you tested with, and a link to the Windows
driver you used in your report. Not using ndiswrapper.

[Bug 1245022] Re: Grub screen cuts off to the left since upgrade from Ubuntu 10.04

2013-10-30 Thread Phillip Susi
The bios chooses the exact signal timings. Some monitors don't give
enough range on their adjustments to make the signal fit the screen, but
there's nothing grub can do about it, short of asking the bios for a
different video mode. You may want to configure grub to use another
mode and see if that works around the problem.

[Bug 1176315] Re: Network-manager unresponsive to mouse clicks after resume from suspend

2013-10-30 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
phukariflux, could you please confirm this issue exists with the latest
development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ . If the issue remains,
could you please run the following command in the development release
from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will
automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this
report:

apport-collect -p linux

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available (not the daily
folder, but the one all the way at the bottom) following
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional
upstream developers to examine the issue.Once you've tested the upstream
kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this
bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For
example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.12-rc7

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next
to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please
remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's
Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your
understanding.
