[Bug 1234400] Re: Cannot log in users if their Xauthority file is corrupt.
I've just experienced the same story as Mr. Bruno Nova (brunonova). I spent a whole day to shoot the trouble and identified that it's about .Xauthority. I tracked the /var/log/lightdm/lightdm.log and looked into my .Xauthority. I found it contained two entries: snow/unix:1 MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 f8aa6a272ab2e68533175967a9e5d09d snow.mydomain.com.tw/unix:0 MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 1e9a7aeba63b74bef069a3629fe3e80a Removing the 2nd entry, which should be 'snow' instead of 'snow.mydomain.com.tw', made my system recover and logs me in again. (Usually I am the only user of this machine. The :1 entry is created when I successfully login with a new test account, and switch to login my normal account.) I don't know when it was touched and by whom. I have tried to reconfigure postfix the other day. I have changed my /etc/hostname from snow to snow.mydomain.com.tw, but I changed it back later... I think short hostname is better for my administration. Such condition rarely happens. It looks .Xauthority is seldom updated except necessity. However it(the greeter?) could be more robust for such cases. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1234400 Title: Cannot log in users if their Xauthority file is corrupt. [Bug 1245315] Re: alacarte fails to write a proper "Categories=<>; " line to .desktop files
This issue finds its roots in a problem with the creation and deletion of Applications Menu (aka Main Menu) entries which is explained on: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alacarte/+bug/1245300 Comment #2 there explains the motivation for the present submission in greater detail. It appears not related or limited just to Xfce. Specifically, the key issue of the present submission centres on giving the user GUI-based full control through alacarte to configure the desired allocation of individual menu entries (launchers) to the Application Menu categories. At present, this can only be fully achieved by manually editing .desktop configuration files. Note: Clearly, there is no intention (nor any need) to deviate from the standard menu specifications. Re: [Bug 732677] Re: bcmwl 5.100.82.38+bdcom-0ubuntu2 not work on BCM4311/4312
Hi Christian; For me the b43 installer in the repos does the trick. One must also manually turn on the wifi with the Fn-key switch. As pointes out above the version numbers in the title may not be current; there are also many related bugs (although I disagree which are duplicates); and the "real problem" appears to be that whatever code decides which driver to use is jncorrect. Also, for awhile at least the non-working driver was causing the whole networking stack to crash though I think that is not the case in 13.10. For clarity I have an inspiron 1501 with the b43 driver running fine on the 4311 device. [Bug 1245300] Re: alacarte does not delete deleted application menu entries
Hi Jasper Thank you for this very clear explanation of alacarte's behaviour. Also great that you are willing to give the locally-stored .desktop files in /home/<>/local/share/applications/ more meaningful file names. There is one issue with which the menu specification you quote above does not deal. In our case, it arose because the newish Nemo File Manager (installed after the rather catastrophic functionality stripping in Nautilus, its parent) does not install any .desktop file in the system or user directories (bug reported on the Linux Mint launchpad site). We therefore created a menu entry for Nemo under the Applications category of the Applications Menu through alacarte. But it did not show up there, nor in any other menu category of the Applications Menu. So we deleted it and tried again – same result. Ultimately after several more tries followed by some more searching, it proved to be in the Other category of the Applications Menu, which itself on our systems is set as hidden because all useful entries there are already shown under other categories. This placement in Other proved to be prescribed behaviour according to freedesktop.org, because that is the default placement if there is no "Categories=<>;" attribute in a .desktop file or if the value of the "Categories=<>;" attribute is not recognized. And alacarte does not write a "Categories=<>;" attribute, even if a new menu entry is created manually within a given menu category of the Applications Menu. And without that attribute, alacarte also does not allow drag+drop of the newly-created menu entry from Other to a more specific and appropriate Applications Menu category. Hence the two issues raised, ie the one here and the one at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alacarte/+bug/1245315). Specifically: The manual entries were not potentially useful amended copies of .desktop entries already present at a higher level in the system directories. And the delete instruction was meant actually to delete them, not to hide them. Instead, they merely accumulated in /home/... as hidden. Clearly therefore, as this instance demonstrates, a true delete function in alacarte of local (/home/...-based) .desktop files – in addition to hide – is useful. It does not hurt, as a normal user without root privileges cannot add, change or delete any .desktop files outside of /home/... anyway. (And a user adopting root privileges should take responsibility for his own deeds.) Any superfluous .desktop files can only ever be created by the user through alacarte in /home/... So, even with true delete functionality in alacarte, the .desktop entries present in the system dirs can only ever be hidden. And, as system and local .desktop files are inversely hierarchically merged to make up the Applications Menu as it appears on the desktop, they will always remain visible in alacarte but marked as hidden, as per menu specification. And, as to the second issue, it would clearly be useful if alacarte could write the "Categories=<>;" attribute of .desktop files. (We ultimately had to resort to manually editing the .desktop files to get the Nemo launchers in their proper category within the Applications Menu on our systems. But this we only could do with some confidence after studying the pertinent freedesktop.org specifications – not quite a recommended route for the average computer user.) Either this could be automatic in alacarte, reflecting the Applications Menu category in which a menu entry is actually created or to which it is moved by drag+drop. Alternatively, the Categories parameter could be presented to the user in the New Item dialog and in the Properties dialog in alacarte, for example with a drop-down list of available choices. But of course, if, according to the menu specification, there is another mechanism for the user to determine into which menu category of the Applications Menu a menu entry is placed (see your reply to launchpad submission #1245315), then that is just as good. The only key thing is that, at present, the user has no control in the matter, except by manually editing configuration files. I really apologize for the length of this comment, but I hope that it helps better to explain the motivation behind the two submissions. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1245300 Title: alacarte does not delete deleted application menu entries To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alacarte/+bug/1245300/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

http://askubuntu.com/questions/360810/removing-broken-packages-on- distro-update-13-04-to-13-10/360889#360889 [Quote from page above] sudo apt-get install ppa-purge sudo ppa-purge xorg-edgers One of my laptops worked after this. However on another laptop this didn't seem to fix the problem. Checking the log file /var/log/dist- upgrade/main.log I noticed that the error hadn't changed, I was still seeing a failure like: 2013-10-28 14:38:03,043 DEBUG Installing 'xserver-xorg-video-all' (Distro KeepInstalledPkgs rule) 2013-10-28 14:38:03,518 ERROR Dist-upgrade failed: 'E:Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.' [Bug 1246583] [NEW] All hotkeys of LibreOffice don't work in non-English keyboard layout
Public bug reported: Hotkeys (Ctrl+b, Ctrl+s etc) in LibreOffice are language dependent and work in English language only. While writing in any other language i.e. any Cyrillic, it's impossible to use hotkeys, they just don't do anything. Switching to English input language enable hotkeys once again. This is very frustrating as user needs to switch language to save document, to make it bold, or italic, etc. This was not experienced in Ubuntu 13.04. Steps to reproduce: 1. System Settings > Text Entry. 2. Add another keyboard layout beside English [In my case it is Bengali (Probhat)] 3. Now launch Writer. 4. Switch the keyboard layout from English (US) to Bengali (Probhat) by pressing Ctrl+Space. 5. Press Ctrl+B to change font weight to bold. Error: Font weight does not get changed. Expected: Font weight should change to bold. Note: none other system hotkeys work as expected. I.e. Ctrl+s to save, or Ctrl+b to subscript, or Ctrl+i to italic etc. Workaround: The only way is to - 1. change the keyboard layout to English 2. then press desired hotkey 3. then switch keyboard layout back to Bengali. The issue is critical, as it make writer very slow for keyboard-only typing. [Bug 1208019] Re: Eclipse menus doesn't show up in Saucy
Sebastián, which eclipse.desktop file did you modify? The one from the Ubuntu Eclipse package or did you create your own? Ubuntu only packages Eclipse 3.8 so if you want to use kepler (4.3), you have to download, extract it manually (from the sound of it you already did that) then you need to create your own .desktop file that points to the executable, with the same menu workaround. You can drag that new .desktop file to the launcher. The splash screen I believe got fixed recently in the upcoming version 4.4 because it looks fine with the latest build for me but not earlier versions. I'll poke around to see if the fix can be backported to the 4.3 stream but this is a bit off-topic... I think a good temporary solution for the menu would be to fix the blacklist so Eclipse is blacklisted again at the "program name" level so that both the Ubuntu package and the eclipse.org packages have a working menu again. But from what I understand of the problem, it would only workaround the issue for Eclipse products that have "eclipse" or "Eclipse" has the executable name and not the other products that have a different executable name (Aptana? Dart?). Still, that would mean most people won't have to apply a workaround manually which is a big win IMO. I just need a few spare hours to verify all this and push a fix ;) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1208019 Title: Eclipse menus doesn't show up in Saucy To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/eclipse/+bug/1208019/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Not to my knowledge. + 5) What is the distance of the wireless device from AP? About 5m. + 6) What is the number and type of obstructions between your device and the AP? One door. + A) If you bring the device close to the AP and eliminate obstructions, does this change anything? No. + 7) Does the issue occur with different APs? Yes. I first noticed it at the workplace, which the data in this comment is for, but recently when i was at a conference, i noticed other people could "see" an N-band network while i couldn't. + 8) Is it a regression (e.g. did the problem happen in a prior Ubuntu release)?
