[Bug 1242085] Re: Low write speed to USB disks - do something!

2013-11-30 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Darek, as per http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P5WD2_Premium/#support an update
is available for your BIOS (0709). If you update to this following
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BiosUpdate , does it change anything? If it
doesn't, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the output of
the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so
posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful.

For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette
.

Thank you for your understanding.

** Description changed:

- Problem description:
- I noticed very very low write speed to USB disks, especially to the new ones
with USB 3.0. The "Disks" tool shows write speed about 7 MB/s !!! After start
benchmark this tool shows write speed about 17 MB/s but imidiatelly goes below
10 MB/s. Same low speed during copy e.g. 3GB file manually to USB 3.0 disk.
There is no such problem with read or access speed, only write. Unbelievable
!!!
+ Using a Kingston DT Ultimate G3 (32GB) the "Disks" tool shows write

Even the write speed on my laptop is more important to me.

What I found about this bug (VERY IMPORTANT NOTE):
  - In old realese 12.04 LTS disks works OK.
  - In 13.04 disks works faster than it is now in 13.10.
- - If disk is formatted as NTFS the write speed is the lowest.
- - If disk is formatted as EXT4 the speed is x2 better.

  - If disk is formatted as FAT32 is low too.
- - No matter if disk is connected via USB 2.0 or USB 3.0. The low write speed
is always the same.

[Bug 1256569] [NEW] EMU 0202 volume control not working

2013-11-30 Thread Kristiyan Kanchev
Public bug reported:

Hello,

I'm using Ubuntu 13.10 and I have EMU 0202 USB audio interface.
Everything is working correctly except that I can't change the master
volume. I've tried to lower the output volume from gnome control center
and alsamixer, but both have absolutely no effect on the output volume.
However, muting is working ok.

The built-in Intel audio interface is working without such problems.

2013-11-30 Thread kalehrl
I'm not sure really.
I used Lubuntu 11.xx and then I switched to Windows XP.
A couple of days ago I installed Lubuntu 13.10 and noticed this hibernate
problem and a more serious one which I reported here:

[Bug 1256567] [NEW] gtk deadlocks in referencer

2013-11-30 Thread Alexey Smirnov
Public bug reported:

To trigger the bug I need to do the following:
1. Open any referencer's menu entry. For example I choose Library->Open. A
dialogue window appears.
2. Try to interact with the dialogue window by pressing buttons.
Step 2 makes referencer to freeze.

Backtrace shows that the program now sits in __lll_lock_wait () which is
called by g_mutex_lock ():

#0 __lll_lock_wait ()

   from /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libglib-2.0.so.0
#8 0x7685d277 in gtk_main ()

I am not a GTK programmer and cannot identify an exact source of these
deadlocks, but I believe that they are caused by some thread related
changes in newer versions of glib. This conclusion is supported by the
fact that deadlocks are absent in referencer 1.1.6 in Debian squeeze.

While in my case the bug is reproducible in a rather straightforward manner,
it might not be so in general. If the menu is working properly there is another
method to trigger the bug. This method inevitably leads to deadlocks for
refrencer 1.1.6 in Debian wheezy. I am quite sure this also true for 1.2.1.
Steps to reproduce
1. Have a large collection of papers.
2. Create a new library in referencer from this collection. The arxiv plugin
must be on. While creating the library, referencer call the arxiv plugin which
uses glib to show info boxes. Because of large number of papers large number
of treads will be created. This should increase the probability of deadlocks.

[Bug 1256565] [NEW] apt-key del gives wrong message if key is not in keyring

2013-11-30 Thread Lars Noodén
Public bug reported:

If an attempt is made to remove a key that is already not on the list of
trusted keys, apt-key gives no indication that the key
was not found. Instead it says "OK" no matter what:

 # apt-key del 40976EAF437B
 OK
 # apt-key list | grep 40976EAF437B
 # apt-key list | grep 40
 pub 4096R/C0B21F32 2012-05-11
 pub 4096R/EFE21092 2012-05-11
 # apt-key del 40976EAF437B
 OK

What should happen when an attempt is made to delete a key that is not
found among the list of trusted keys is that apt-key should complain
with some other message than "OK". Maybe a "Key not found" message
would be appropriate.

[Bug 781397] Re: Help opens web browser (Epiphany, Konqueror), Inkscape stays in modal state .

2013-11-30 Thread Cojnel
Except for inkscape freezing,
this sounds very similar to the popup i'm getting.

When clicking on an item in the help menu that opens a webpage,
then two popups open in the center of the inkscape window,
and the webpage opens in the browser.

The first popup says:
'Keys and Mouse Reference' working, please wait...
[Cancel]

the text between the '' signs refers to what was clicked.

The second one says:
Inkscape has received additional data from the
script executed. The script did not return an error,
but this may indicate the results will not be as
expected.

(process:9189): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_slice_set_config: assertion `sys_page_size
== 0' failed
[OK]

If the second popup is moved then one can see that the first one is
still open behind it.

If one clicks OK on the first popup,
then they both go away, and inkscape works fine.

Tested with:
r12833 on linux mint 15 cinnamon 32bit
Firefox v25.0.1 is the default browser.

[Bug 1243831] Re: Cannot enable WLAN after wake up from hibernation mode

2013-11-30 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Jens Herrmann, as per http://download.lenovo.com/express/ddfm.html an update is
available for your BIOS (3.15). If you update to this following
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BiosUpdate , does it change anything? If it
doesn't, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the output of
the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

[Bug 1254889] Re: Dell latitude d505 hibernate/resume failure

2013-11-30 Thread kalehrl
I did sudo dpkg --purge zram-config.
Rebooted and verified that there is no zram used (cat/proc/swaps just shows
/mnt/swap of 1gb).
Tried to hibernate but it is the same as before, the system just logs me out.

[Bug 1256560] [NEW] Menus are almost unreadable, with deceptive highlighting

2013-11-30 Thread Scott Cowles Jacobs
Public bug reported:

I am using Lubuntu 13.10, but for various reasons use several different
Gnome apps, including Nautilus and Evince. This bug is for both of the
above, and probably for any Gnome app that has menus displayed with a
button on the right of the control area (whatever the area is that is
just under the window titlebar).

The menus that pop up when one of the menu buttons is pressed (View Options and
Location Options for Nautilus; I don't know what the two menus are called for
Evince, as they seem not to have tooltips)
are dark grey/light grey(or possibly white) on a black background, and thus
very difficult to read.

In fact, unless I increase my monitor's brightness to close to 100%, I
cannot tell that the dark grey menu items are there at all.

Also, the options that are selectable are the ones in dark grey. The options
that are not selectable are in light grey or white.
Thus, the only options that you can select, are those that you cannot see...

I had two ideas on this:

1) Perhaps somehow Gnome apps are depending on something that is normally there
for a full gnome desktop, that is not there if one is just installing certain
apps in isolation.
This... something... is where Gnome decides on what colors to use in displaying
the menus.
Without this, some default colors are used that don't work very well.

2) My Lubuntu setup uses the window Theme Bear2 (standard, included with
Lubuntu, not downloaded).
Perhaps there is some interaction with the particular Theme used...
No. I just tried several different themes, and the menus all came up exactly
the same.

Unless everybody's menus are this way, I am going to assume that 1) is
probably closer to being the cause.

Remember, this applies to Evince as well (and perhaps many other Gnome apps.)
If there is some way to report a bug for "Gnome in general" and not for a
particular Gnome app.
either move this bug there, or let me know where to do it, and I will.

I will attach screenshots showing the problem for each of the two menus
for Gnome and also for Evince's two menus.

[Bug 1254371] Re: Please update to CouchDB 1.5.0

2013-11-30 Thread Jason Gerard DeRose
Dave,

The feature freeze is February 20th:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/TrustyTahr/ReleaseSchedule

So that means in an idea world, there'd be a stable CouchDB 1.6 release
at least a week before that. I haven't had time to keep up with the 1.6
plans, but it also depends a bit on how major the changes are in 1.6.

BTW, I have a 1.5 package I've been testing in the Novacut daily PPA, if anyone
wants to give it a spin:
https://launchpad.net/~novacut/+archive/daily?field.series_filter=trusty

I'm about ready to propose this branch for merging:

[Bug 1245819] Re: RT3290 driver keeps disconnecting.

2013-11-30 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Graeme Pietersz, as per
http://h20566.www2.hp.com/portal/site/hpsc/template.PAGE/public/psi/swdHome/?sp4ts.oid=5229457&spf_p.tpst=swdMain&spf_p.prp_swdMain=wsrp-navigationalState%3DswEnvOID%253D4059%257CswLang%253D%257Caction%253DlistDriver&javax.portlet.begCacheTok=com.vignette.cachetoken&javax.portlet.endCacheTok=com.vignette.cachetoken#BIOS
an update is available for your BIOS (F.43). If you update to this following
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BiosUpdate , does it change anything? If it
doesn't, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the output of
the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so
posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful.

For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette
.

Thank you for your understanding.

** Description changed:

Since I upgraded to Saucy my RT3290 wifi disconnects after a while and,
cannot reconnect. Networks are visible but connecting fails.

Rebooting fixes it for a few minutes, then it disconnects again.

[Bug 1242367] Re: gnome-control-center user-accounts don't load, only hangs

2013-11-30 Thread Woody
Hi

The work around I used was to create a file (as root)
/etc/modprobe.d/saa7134.conf

In that file I placed the following content:
blacklist saa7134
blacklist saa7134_alsa

I then rebooted the machine

The pro of this is that you do not have to unplug the card, but you may
still require a reboot for it to work.

I currently don't use the card, so having it disabled permanently is not
a big problem for me.

Just another option.

[Bug 1254920] Re: CPU utilization / accounting issues

2013-11-30 Thread Doug Smythies
I have isolated the kernel configuration differences down to:

doug@v32-serv03:~/kernel/linux-3.12.0$ diff config_def config_05
781c781
< CONFIG_X86_SYSFB=y
---
> # CONFIG_X86_SYSFB is not set
4869c4869
< CONFIG_FB_BOOT_VESA_SUPPORT=y
---
> # CONFIG_FB_BOOT_VESA_SUPPORT is not set
4900c4900
< CONFIG_FB_VESA=y
---
> # CONFIG_FB_VESA is not set

Where config_def is the default kernel configuration for the current
Trusty kernel and config_05 has 3 reversions back to the way they were
for Saucy. Each reversion by itself is not enough, they have to both (I
lump the two VESA ones into one, because one can not change one without
the other) be reverted.

Note that the console display does not work when the reversions are
done, and hasn't worked for most reversion attempts during this work. I
use ssh to access the computer.

Anticipated question: Why weren't display display issues mentioned
previously? It's kind of an important point?

Answer: Video display issues are very common on this computer when I
start messing with kernels, so I didn't think it was significant
earlier.

[Bug 1256545] Re: Firefox crashed.

2013-11-30 Thread Scott Cowles Jacobs
By the way, the apparmor stuff is there because ubuntu-bug reported that
apparmor information for firefox had been altered and would I like to include
something (config file?). Not knowing if it was important or not, I said "Yes".
I have not changed anything in apparmor for firefox (only added my data
partition to tunables home directories, and this was quite a long time ago...),
so if anything there changed, it was not by me.

Maybe not that strange: the apport report in this thread is quite old. I
haven't filled a new one now. Should I?

[Bug 1256545] [NEW] Firefox crashed.

2013-11-30 Thread Scott Cowles Jacobs
Public bug reported:

Not much to say: FF crashed (froze, then disappeared).

The normal crash window came up, but reported that there was not enough memory
to report the bug,
so I called ubuntu-bug firefox instead...

Perhaps lack of enough memory (2GB) was somehow to blame for the crash.

I would not have bothered writing this, as I have nothing useful to say,
but I was unsure if the crash would be reported if I did not go through the
motions and fill in this bug form.

For future reference, if a bug would normally be silently reported in the
automatic crash reporting system,
but is unable to do so, should I fill anything in here, or not?
When the browser tab comes up, if I just close it, will the bug get reported,
or should I do what I am doing now?

[Bug 1246670] Re: ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS: can't connect to WIFI - protocol implementation problem??

2013-11-30 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Piero Bonatti, as per
http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/Product/inspiron-1120 an update is
available for your BIOS (A06). If you update to this following
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BiosUpdate , does it change anything? If it
doesn't, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the output of
the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so
posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful.

+ 14e4:4727 [Dell Inspiron 10z (1120)] Ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS: can't connect to WIFI

** Description changed:

After the last updates I can't connect anymore to WIFI networks, including:
- - office wifi (WPA / WPA2 enterprise + PEAP)
- - public wifi from airport lounges, hotels, conferences.
+  - office wifi (WPA / WPA2 enterprise + PEAP)
+  - public wifi from airport lounges, hotels, conferences.

The notebook (dell inspiron) still detects the available newtorks. If
they are protected, then additional data are requested (passwords and
the like). So it seems that the wifi card is working well with the
current driver (see below for further evidence). However, then the
connection times out before getting any IP address.

When I switch to Windows, I immediately get the connection (then the
wifi network and the notebook's hardware are OK). Sometimes, when I
switch back to Ubuntu, the connection starts spontaneously and I can
work normally (as if the problem were in the DHCP protocol execution,
and the Windows connection "did some work" that Ubuntu currently can't
do). (further evidence that the driver is OK).

I'm using the proprietary driver proposed by Ubuntu:
"This package contains Broadcom 802.11 Linux STA wireless driver for use with
Broadcom's BCM4311-, BCM4312-, BCM4313-, BCM4321-, BCM4322-, BCM43224-, and
BCM43225-, BCM43227- and BCM43228-based hardware."

** Description changed:

Since upgrading to 13.10, my wireless Logitech keyboard and mouse have
been very laggy and quite unusable. The mouse barely moves or responds
most of the time, and the keyboard either ignores input or gets stuck on
a character, or sequence of characters, and repeats them constantly.
-
- They were both working in 13.04, but since upgrading via a fresh
- install, to 13.10, they won't work.
-
- I found a similar sounding bug
- (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1194649) which
- sounded promising, but everyone has reported that their issue was fixed,
- so I decided it might be better to report a new one since my issue isn't
- fixed. I'm fully updated via apt-get with no fixes.
-
- Let me know what I can do to help debug the issue.
+ They were both working in 13.04.

[Bug 1248287] Re: Apple Wireless Trackpad "magicmouse" crashes kernel on multitouch

2013-11-30 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Chad Miller, regarding your ThinkPad, as per
http://download.lenovo.com/express/ddfm.html an update is available for your
BIOS (3.16). If you update to this following
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BiosUpdate , does it change anything? If it
doesn't, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the output of
the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

Thank you for your understanding.

Re: [Bug 1069107] Re: Unity can't switch to random windows

2013-11-30 Thread Jon Loldrup
I'm using unity, not unity-2D. I've never used unity 2D on this machine.
It's a system76 laptop with an i5 processor, preinstalled with ubuntu, and
not tweaked in any way. I tried this:

jon@lemur:~$ echo $DESKTOP_SESSION
ubuntu

This output, supposedly, reveals that I'm not using unity 2D

I don't understand why my apport rapport mentioned unity 2D

[Bug 1256540] [NEW] "Ejecting" USB (ex. Camera) doesn't offer to empty Trash

2013-11-30 Thread Scott Cowles Jacobs
Public bug reported:

I have Lubuntu 13.10 (originally 12.04). I added Nautilus, so that I could have
it show date/time for photos under the thumbnails, so I can easily group them.
[The current version does not have the option of selecting the type of date
displayed under the thumbnails in the preferences, so I had to install Nemo,
which is based on an earlier version of Nautilus, and still can. I retained
Nautilus, for some reason, and the bug is true for both apps. ]

When I copy photos from my USB-attached camera, I send them to trash when I am
satisfied the copy was successful.
When I had regular Ubuntu (various versions prior to 12.04) and clicked on
"Eject" or "Safely remove drive", or whatever, I was asked whether or not I
wished to empty the trash or not.

At some point in Nautilus' development, some things changed.
Now, there is only one option: Eject (or the equivilent clicking on the eject
icon next to the device name).
Now, when I select "Eject" or click on the icon, I am NOT asked if I want to
empty the trash. I have repeatedly attached/removed the camera and tried both
the context item and icon, but am not asked about the trash.
I have to separately "select all" files in the two Trash sub-directories and
click shift-del (and confirm that I wish to permanently delete the files).
Why is Nautilus not asking me if I want to empty the trash?

[Awhile ago, there was some discussion about the USB removal options
that used to be present: "Eject", "Safely Remove Drive", and I think
there might have also been a third one. I imagine the consensus was
that having multiple options for essentially (literally?) the same
operation was probably confusing to the user, and therefore the options
were reduced to "Eject". Am I correct? The Trash ought to be emptied,
in any case...]

In Trusty (qemu) there are still errors but I do not think that they are
the same. I would say that this particular bug is fixed in trusty in

[Bug 1256537] [NEW] Program Hang

2013-11-30 Thread John Winterton
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu 13.10

  Installed: 1:3.8.2-1

  Version table:
 *** 1:3.8.2-1 0
500 http://ca.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ saucy/universe amd64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

In Human (Black) against machine at level 3, the program hangs for at
least half an hour. I think this is a bug in the search for a next
move, but have no tools to test this with better information. I attach
some screen shots showing the position.

Output from system monitor shows processor at 50%. This is an Athlon II
X2 dual processor, so 50% is 100% of on processor.

Please feed this back to the author(s) who may be interested in solving
this problem.

I expected the program to move into one of the available slots for
white. It is now some 42 minutes since it moved last.

This is not the only position in which this happens. After beating the
program frequently at level 2, I moved up to level 3 and if goes into a
pout if I get into a winning position.

[Bug 1200829] Re: Regression: Enabling typical bindings in "Desktop-based Viewport Switching" breaks scrollwheel scrolling in some windows with a usb mouse on a laptop

2013-11-30 Thread Doug McMahon
A small note concerning proposed xorg commits.
While they do fix all 3 bugs it seems to create one new very limited bug in
14.04 -
With a usb mouse nautilus will crash when opening folders on the desktop thru a
double l. click.
(nautilus crashed with SIGABRT in g_assertion_message()

Doesn't occur from context menu or from d. tap on touchpad, just from mouse
Hopefully when/if there is an xorg fix it won't occur

I'm back on 13.04 with the latest nvidia drivers and my boot times are

doesn't, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the output of
the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

[Bug 1105314] Re: mtink localization problem (russian, incorrect font/encoding)

2013-11-30 Thread Paul Gevers
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

This issue looks like you are missing the required fonts. Could you
please try to install xfonts-bolkhov-koi8r-75dpi (maybe a restart is
needed) and try again?

I am unsure what process should make these fonts available to you as
your locale suggests you might be interested in such fonts.

[Bug 312964] Re: Applet crashes on opening

2013-11-30 Thread Paul Gevers
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to
look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many
changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem
may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if
you could test it on a currently supported Ubuntu version. When you test
it and it is still an issue, kindly upload the updated logs by running
apport-collect 312964 and any other logs that are relevant for this
particular issue.

[Bug 1249086] Re: Wireless dies out constantly on 13.10

2013-11-30 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
RedMirtle, could you please confirm this issue exists with the latest
development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ . If the issue remains,
could you please just make a comment to this.

If reproducible in Trusty, could you please test the latest upstream
kernel via http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-
ppa/mainline/v3.13-rc2-trusty/ and advise to the results?

** Description changed:

- The wifi disconnects constantly. It can take an hour or five minutes. I
originally used the normal Network Manager, case in which the connection i was
connecting to would actually disappear from the list until i requested the
Network to be disabled and enabled again. I changed to Wicd, following a
suggestion in another report and the disappearance of the connection was fixed,
though it would still disconnect.

Everytime the connection is about to drop, the computer laggs.
This problem began during Kernel 3.5. I used to boot to that in order to
avoid it and the wifi worked flawelessly. Unfortunately with Salamander, that
Kernel doesn't start the graphics properly (I get a funky X instead of a mouse
pointer). After 3.5, I tried every kernel that was out as they were
periodically updated, until 3.11, to no avail.
-
- I realize this is a bug diplicated from this bug:

-
- and this bug:

- that use my same laptop and present the same problem. Unfortunatelly both
bugs have expired. Plus, bug report ettiquete states to file a bug per machine
:D
- Needless to say, I'm not nerdy enough to bisect kernel (read that term for
the first time right now) but I'm ready to learn :)

[Bug 303862] Re: Pidgin freezes when generating new OTR private key

2013-11-30 Thread Paul G
I also experienced the bug (13.10, Pidgin 2.10.7 (libpurple 2.10.7),
pidgin-otr 4.0.0-1). After doing some research I think I can conclude
that the reason must be that Pidgin tries to get the initialization
randomness from /dev/random and stalls until /dev/random delivers
sufficient data.

For me pidgin unfreezes after typing random data into an arbitrary text
field for a few minutes to produce entropy for /dev/random. It would be
adviseable to give a hint to the user as to what pidgin is waiting for,
and how he can speed up the process (like using mouse/keyboard/whatever
devices feed entropy to /dev/random).
