[Bug 1063354] Re: Sudden Read-Only Filesystems

2013-12-22 Thread Felix Joussein
Hi, I can confirm Rahul Jain's observation:
I am also on Mint 15.
I had that problem since Mint 14, then not for a long while and yesterday it
appeared again.
In my case, I am sure, my Hardware is OK, no smart errors on the SSD, and as
this is a notebook, I don't think, there are any pin problems on the connectors.

I have noticed, that this problem appears every time, ther's heavy SDD
activity, and lots of small data-blocks are beeing encrypted and written/read
to the SSD.
In particular yesterday I was enabling the calendar caching in my thunderbird
lightning calendars.
This provoked massive writing and reading operations.
An other time that happened was again in thunderbird when I synchronized my
12GB IMAP Mailbox.

I just tried to verify my theory about many little files/small data-blocks - I
used bonnie++ to write many little files in a very fast manner.
Result: same dmesg output, ends in kernel panic...

This is a vital problem so a fix needs to be found asap.
regards and merry Christmas ,
Felix

[Bug 1263618] [NEW] compcache hook should add spare zram devices

2013-12-22 Thread Eugene San
Public bug reported:

These days zram leaves staging and in many cases can be seen as ramdisk
replacement.
Currently compcache hook loads driver with single device instance, blocking any
additional usage of zram driver.

I suggest to add 16 /dev/zramX devices (same amount as with /dev/ramX).
That won't affect current zram utilization by compcache hook but will allow
convenient usage of zram for other purposes.

  AMD FX-8120
  AMD Radeon HD 7950
  240GB Seagate SSD (20GiB / partition)
  2TB WD HDD (/home)

The same issues are present both with GPT UEFI and simple MBR non-UEFI
  installs.

I have installed Ubuntu 14.04 three times and each met the same fate.
The first time you boot into the system after installing it, it works fine
(maybe). However, after you reboot the system it will fail on such a grand
catastrophic scale that you can't even boot into recovery mode since that will
begin spamming error messages quickly as well.

It does not output anything to logs during these errors so the only
thing you have to go by are screenshots of the errors. In general the
errors are all indicating issues with systemd-udevd.

I also had similar problems in Ubuntu 13.10, plus some extra problems.
Ubuntu 13.10 fails at installing grub and the grub-efi-amd64 and outputs
  tons of errors regarding efibootmgr.

- It isn't related to the kernel since Ubuntu 13.04 with kernel 3.12 works
- perfectly. It also doesn't seem to be related to firmware since I use
- linux-firmware-1.117 on Ubuntu 13.04 as well. It may be a bug related to
- efibootmgr and systemd.

[Bug 390508] Re: notifyOSD ignores the expire timeout parameter

2013-12-22 Thread Heather Van Wilde
It's amazing. Three and a half years, almost to the day, since this
'bug' was first commented on. I use bug very loosely, because all it is
is poor programming that the developer would rather defend than make the
few small changes required to resolve this.

There have been dozens of case uses identified for the timeout parameter
to be installed properly.

It's been documented how this failure actively prevents programs
developed for a non-Ubuntu distro from working properly in Ubuntu, and
can cause confusion and unexpected reactions when porting programs from
Ubuntu to another distro.

Many times the specifications have been brought up, documenting how the
Ubuntu devs are out of specifications set by freedesktop. Instead
Ubuntu (as an organization even though it's one or two people speaking
on their 'behalf') has basically told people to 'make your own notify
program' if you don't like theirs. And to Hades if you're not able to
safely integrate it into whatever desktop notification system the end
user happens to be using.

This is how OS's get fragmented and end up going in the toilet. I
understand the GPL pretty much lets you fork the 'official' program and
muck around with it as much as you want, but the amount of effort that
has gone into defending a poorly defensible position versus the work it
would take to bring the program back in line with the standard, I can't
even accept laziness as an excuse for this anymore.

The only understandable reason this is still going on is pure and simple
bull headed stubbornness.

[Bug 1263582] Re: sound stops working

2013-12-22 Thread Ubuntu Foundations Team Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a
specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu
in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source
packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs
about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your
bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.
You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1263582/+editstatus and add the
package name in the text box next to the word Package.

[This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

[Bug 1263591] [NEW] Add notification-area to panel-default-layout.layout

2013-12-22 Thread Alkis Georgopoulos
Public bug reported:

Upstream gnome-panel includes notification-area:
https://git.gnome.org/browse/gnome-panel/plain/data/panel-default-layout.layout

In Ubuntu, debian/patches/01_layout.patch changes that file in order to make
use of indicator-applet-complete. That patch is Ubuntu-specific, it doesn't
exist in Debian:
http://anonscm.debian.org/viewvc/pkg-gnome/desktop/unstable/gnome-panel/debian/patches/

The problem is that that patch also removes notification-area, so
applications like pidgin, stardict etc (and even nm-applet in Trusty)
don't show up at all.

Please modify that patch so that notification-area is not removed, i.e.
add the following lines to it:

[Object notification-area]
object-iid=NotificationAreaAppletFactory::NotificationArea
toplevel-id=top-panel
pack-type=end
pack-index=1

I'm attaching an updated 41_classic_layout.patch.

[Bug 554488] Re: 0x104d9008 needs vaio quirk for audible sound on lucid live cd

2013-12-22 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Michael Doube, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been
any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an
issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development
release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in
the development release from a Terminal
(Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather
and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available (not the daily
folder) following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow
additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've tested the
upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you
tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following
tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For
example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.13-rc5

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next
to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please
remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's
Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your
understanding.

[Bug 554488] Re: 0x104d9008 needs vaio quirk for audible sound on lucid live cd

2013-12-22 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: pulseaudio

Testing today's Lucid ISO in a live session and my fairly ordinary Intel
- HDA audio is not configured, so I get no audio at all.
+ HDA audio is not configured, so I get no audio at all. The speaker icon
+ shows dashes, Sound Preferences show that no input devices are detected,
+ and my laptop is silent. Tested audio after installing and audio is
+ working as normal, so this looks like it only affects live sessions.

It looks like you are trying to install to a Windows "Dynamic Disk".
This is unsupported so you will need to have Windows convert it back to
a basic disk.

2013-12-22 Thread Pontus-fuchs-h
Some new observations made while investigating this issue:

* Without X started suspend/resume works fine
* With NoAccel set in xorg conf file suspend/resume works fine
* If X is stopped before suspending the resume works ok but if I try to start X
a second time after resume, X hangs.

[Bug 1263365] Re: Losing the mouse pointer when switching account

2013-12-22 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Presently XMir uses the X software cursor rather than its own. And the X
software cursor is known to be slightly buggy in some cases. But the
logic is all in Xorg.

When you disable XMir, X will generally switch back to a "hardware
cursor" which performs better and is generally more reliable. So this
gives the illusion that XMir is breaking the cursor. Actually XMir's
just using a slightly unreliable feature of Xorg.

** Also affects: xorg-server (Ubuntu)
   Importance: Undecided
   Status: New

** Summary changed:

- Losing the mouse pointer when switching account
+ Losing the mouse pointer (software cursor) when switching account

** Changed in: mir

2013-12-22 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Selçuk SEVER, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been
any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an
issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development
release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in
the development release from a Terminal
(Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather
and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available (not the daily
folder) following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow
additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've tested the
upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you
tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following
tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For
example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.13-rc3

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next
to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please
remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's
Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your
understanding.

[Bug 421276] Re: USB remote stops working

2013-12-22 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Glenn, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any
activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If
so, could you please test for this with the latest development release
of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com
/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in
the development release from a Terminal
(Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather
and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available (not the daily
folder) following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow
additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've tested the
upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you
tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following
tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For
example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.13-rc3

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next
to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please
remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's
Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your
understanding.

[Bug 1263561] [NEW] osspd doesn't work within Ubuntu 13.10

2013-12-22 Thread Tong Sun
Public bug reported:

Hi,

As reported in
http://askubuntu.com/questions/361711/osspd-aoss-padsp-dont-work-with-13-10
I found that osspd doesn't work with Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy.

I'm sure it is Ubuntu 13.10's problem because I also have Ubuntu 13.04
on this very same machine, and it works fine. Here is my Ubuntu 13.04's
info:

$ uname -rsm
Linux 3.8.0-19-generic x86_64

$ cat /proc/version
Linux version 3.8.0-19-generic (buildd@allspice) (gcc version 4.7.3
(Ubuntu/Linaro 4.7.3-1ubuntu1) ) #30-Ubuntu SMP Wed May 1 16:35:23 UTC 2013

And here is my Ubuntu 13.10's info:

$ uname -rsm
Linux 3.11.0-13-generic x86_64

$ cat /proc/version
Linux version 3.11.0-13-generic (buildd@roseapple) (gcc version 4.8.1
(Ubuntu/Linaro 4.8.1-10ubuntu8) ) #20-Ubuntu SMP Wed Oct 23 07:38:26 UTC 2013

Here is how I tested:

$ ls -l /dev/dsp
crw-rw-rw- 1 root root 14, 3 2013-12-22 18:39 /dev/dsp

$ stat /dev/dsp
  File: '/dev/dsp'

Modify: 2013-12-22 18:39:47.074165000 -0500
Change: 2013-12-22 18:39:47.074165000 -0500
 Birth: -

$ echo 0z0z > /dev/dsp
bash: /dev/dsp: Input/output error

Restarting osspd won't work:

$ sudo service osspd restart
 * Restarting OSS Proxy Daemon osspd [ OK ]

Rebooting my machine won't work either.

My *PaulsAudio works fine*.

Didn't test padsp or aoss because I'm not sure if they work with my
Ubuntu 13.04, and it is already reported not working.

Your virtual machine has atypical configuration, than those of typical
desktops. It only has 8GB of disk-space which is insufficient to have
two ubuntu installations.
Please create at least 20GB disk drive if you wish to have 2 Ubuntu
installations on it.

Beautiful screenshot by the way =) glad that ubiquity looks good in
Ubuntu GNOME.

Regards,

Dimitri.

Will keep and eye on the situation, but I also have had backups running
