[Bug 327362] Re: Some ISPs have .local domain which disables avahi-daemon

2014-01-24 Thread Pauli
This is a response I got from my ISP. I think it's relevant.

According to the RFC 6762 (chapter 22, IANA
considerations) the top level domain .local
should be handled as being Special-Use Domain
Names, which the RFC 6761 states the caching
DNS servers SHOULD generate immediate (positive
or negative) responses for all queries.

Basicly, one should not query any .local. names.
But as many users do this, ISPs like us must
protect root name servers from these bogus queries.

We recommend not using the avahi-daemon since
it is causing problems.

[Bug 1268275] Re: 10de:07e1 [HP Pavilion p6020jp Desktop PC] Ubuntu 13.10 random screen freeze

2014-01-24 Thread Colin Silvester
Hello Christopher,

I download a version from the current releases site on Jan 14 and
created a bootable USB iso. I ran that directly from the USB a few times
and could not replicate the problem. However, in that mode, I did not
have the NVidia drivers loaded. I downloaded the Jan 24th version today
with the intention of performing a full upgrade. However, I tested that
version booting directly from the USB drive and found that every time I
start firefox the system completely locked up, requiring a power reset
to resolve.

The PC with the problem reported is my main work PC so I am very
reluctant to upgrade to a new version of Ubuntu which may have more bugs
that the one I am currently using.

I would be open to your recommendations but for now, based upon the
issue I saw with firefox, will not perform an upgrade using the Jan 24th
iso.

[Bug 1243733]

2014-01-24 Thread Anidev-aelico
I am currently running KDE 4.11.3 on opensuse 13.1, and have the exact
same issue. Under khotkeys, the PrintScreen command is bound to the
Print button, which is the print screen button, but pressing that
button does nothing. Assigning any other shortcut does work. The print
screen button itself is recognized by other programs such as xev, but it
just doesn't launch the ksnapshot program. Setting any other command in
khotkeys to the print screen button doesn't work either.

Is there a good way to debug this issue and find out what is swallowing
the button press? All I know is that it used to work with kde 4.10, but
now it doesn't.

Re: [Bug 1271399] Re: display problem since updating to 13.10

2014-01-24 Thread Erich Epp
1) Downloaded the latest development release it worked fine--no black bar
2) Rebooted into 13.10 and after the usual daily software updates the
problem has gone away. Clock and calendar disappeared briefly, but that's
a different bug I got it fixed.

Anyway all clear now. Thanks for your help. I would be interested to know
more about what was happening how it was fixed.

[Bug 1013597] Re: No default route for stateful DHCPv6

2014-01-24 Thread Thiago Martins
Guys, sorry if I was rude before... Too much things happening at the
same time today...:-P

I just installed a PFSense 2.1 with IPv6 and, for my surprise, Debian
and Ubuntu Server are the only two operating systems that doesn't work
out-of-the-box in a IPv6-Only network...

Ubuntu Desktop, Windows 7, Mac, are okay in a IPv6-Only env... Debian
and Ubuntu (during the installation process, and even after) doesn't.

I mean, I tried to Install Ubuntu using the following scenarios:

1- SLAAC Unmanaged (no RDNSS) - Ubuntu Server have IPv6 addr without DNS
resolution, of course (expected) - connectivity okay;

2- SLAAC Unmanaged + RDNSS - Ubuntu Server have IPv6 but no DNS name
resolution (i.e. it ignore RDNSS entries from RadvD) - connectivity
okay;

3- SLAAC Managed + DHCPv6 Statefull - Ubuntu Server (or Debian) get its
IPv6 addr, DNS servers too but, the connectivity only starts after
ping6 my_ipv6_gateway - NO CONNECTIVITY UNTIL PING6 GATEWAY!!

So, I'm seeing that there is no option to install Ubuntu (or Debian) in a
IPv6-Only network without suffering some issues (that can be fixed after
install, I know, but it is annoying). Also, we need a IPv6-Enabled NTP server
too...=P

I'm okay with SLAAC-Only deployments but, huge organizations seems to
require DHCPv6 for getting more info about its network services
automatically and SLAAC doesn't provides it (not designed for it)...

As I said, my IPv6 router is a brand new PFSense 2.1 with RadvD +
DHCPv6 (on LAN) and it is working fine, since I have more machines here
working smoothly with IPv6 from behind it. For each scenario above, I've
reconfigured PFSense to match it (Managed - Unmanaged / with - without
DHCPv6).

NOTE: There is no IPv4 on this enviroment.

Best!
Thiago

[Bug 1272621] [NEW] Resolution higher than 1024×768 for Acer x233h external monitor is not available

2014-01-24 Thread Stéphane Guillou
Public bug reported:

I use Ubuntu 13.10 64bits on my Asus F201E, and when I plug in my Acer
x233h via VGA as an external monitor, the maximal resolution available
in System settings Screen Display is 1024×768 (as well as 800×600),
but the maximal resolution of the screen is supposed to be 1920×1080.

I have no proprietary drivers available in System Setting Software
Updates Additional drivers, and I installed the latest version of the
Intel Linux Graphics Drivers from
https://01.org/linuxgraphics/downloads, thinking it would help (version
1.0.3), to no avail.

This seems it should not be the default behaviour.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, as this external monitor ends up having
a maximal resolution that is inferior to my tiny laptop... :)

[Bug 1263591] Re: Add notification-area to panel-default-layout.layout

2014-01-24 Thread Alkis Georgopoulos
Thanks a lot for the feedback, I'm marking it as Won't Fix then.

Some notes:
1) nm-applet integration has issues, it doesn't display the applet for me on
gnome-flashback without manually adding notification-area. I also tried with a
recent 14.04 live CD, some times nm-applet did appear and some times it didn't,
so I think there's some race condition involved, possibly related to LP
#1256961. I'll test more when that bug is resolved. With notification-area
manually added, there's no race condition, nm-applet always appears.

2) About pidgin, if you're talking about
http://packages.ubuntu.com/indicator-status-provider-pidgin, I see there it's
only available for 12.04, maybe that's why I didn't have the integration issues
there and I'm having them now in 14.04.
In 14.04 I see that indicator-messages conflicts with
indicator-status-provider-pidgin, is pidgin in 14.04 supposed to use
indicator-messages, and for some reason it doesn't?

3) About stardict and the other apps that aren't yet ported to use the new
indicators, let's hope they will soon, but until then, users have no way of
knowing why some applications aren't displaying their indicators and that they
need to add notification-area manually to work around that problem.
Deprecating something doesn't mean it has to be removed immediately, there
should be a grace period until e.g. 80% of the involved applications has had
enough time to update their code base to use the new indicators.
So maybe gnome-panel could grant them that grace period and add
notification-area for a couple of more years, dunno...

Kind regards,
Alkis

[Bug 1223622] Re: add support for crypttab mounting of luks devices with detached headers

[Bug 1223622] Re: add support for crypttab mounting of luks devices with detached headers

2014-01-24 Thread DiagonalArg
Precise (12.04) has cryptsetup v.1.4.1, and these patches basically work
for that version also.

(1) /lib/cryptsetup/cryptdisks.functions works with no changes
(2) /usr/share/initramfs-tools/hooks/cryptroot works with no changes
(3) /usr/share/initramfs-tools/scripts/local-top/cryptroot needs a single
added.

I've broken @Glen's combined cryptroot patch into two, made the small mod,
and am attaching
it here.

Usage - The first script adds a valid option to crypttab:
   header=filename

When the initramfs is created, the other two scripts include filename in the
initramfs and
keep track of how to assemble the boot disk on startup.

When the scripts look for filename to include it, the search will be first in
the conf.d directory,
which defaults to: /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d. If it is not found there, then
it is searched as an
absolute path.

As far as I can tell, filename has to be a normal file, though
cryptsetup allows a device.

I haven't tested this yet, but I am close to trying and will report back
when I do.

Despite the mistaken name, the cryptroot-script.patch is for 1.4.1 and
the cryptroot-hook.patch works for both 1.4.1 and 1.4.3.

Fix 'search_opts' unexpected keyword argument error

When executing 'encryption-type-create' command using resource
name, it will use the findall() in base.py, then error will
occur because list() in findall() used 'search_opts' argument
which list() in VolumeEncryptionTypeManager did not have. Some
other command like 'transfer-delete' met same issue.

This patch will add 'search_opts' argument in list() function
in child class to avoid the bug.

[Bug 1190603] Re: [GA-880GMA-USB3, Realtek ALC889, Green Line Out, Rear] Underruns, dropouts or crackling sound

2014-01-24 Thread panic_button
Two solutions will work for this.

#1 Try disabling auto-mute.

#2 Install an updated driver:
http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1PNid=24PFid=24Level=4Conn=3DownTypeID=3GetDown=false

I did #1 and it's fine for me now. Mind you, I use Arch Linux with ALSA.

Could you somehow find out the Ghostscript command lines (or parameter
lists for libgs calls) for both the non-working unrotated case and the
working rotated case? Could you also find out the actual files sent to
Ghostscript for rendering? To post an upstream bug report at Ghostscript
(http://bugs.ghostscript.com/) I would need a way to reproduce the
problem by a pure Ghostscript command line.

 Title:
evince cannot render some EPS files

 Status in Evince document viewer:
   New
Status in “evince” package in Ubuntu:
   Triaged
Status in “ghostscript” package in Ubuntu:
   Confirmed

 Bug description:
   I upgraded to Ubuntu Saucy,
evince cannot render EPS files generated by gnuplot.
   (Just show an empty page.)

   [how to reproduce]

   1. Generate an EPS file using gnuplot by executing the following command.
   $ gnuplot -e set terminal postscript; set output 'test.eps'; plot x;

   2. Open the file test.eps just created.
   $ evince test.eps

The following are what evince writes to the terminal.

   (evince:24176): EvinceDocument-CRITICAL **: ev_document_get_n_pages:
   assertion 'EV_IS_DOCUMENT (document)' failed

   (evince:24176): Gtk-WARNING **: drawing failure for widget `EvView':
   invalid matrix (not invertible)

   (evince:24176): Gdk-CRITICAL **: gdk_pixbuf_get_from_surface:
assertion 'width 0 height 0' failed

   (evince:24176): Gdk-CRITICAL **: gdk_pixbuf_get_from_surface:
assertion 'width 0 height 0' failed

   3. Then evince just shows an empty (white) page.

   ===

If i rotate 90 or -90 degree by pressing Ctrl+Left or Ctrl+Right key,
evince can show this file correctly.

   ===

Okular, GIMP, inkscape and gs can show this EPS file.
(may be rotated 90 degree, however)

[Bug 1272032] Re: Tor Browser Bundle on Ubuntu 13.10 is useless until/unless one manually kills the ibus process

2014-01-24 Thread Damico
That was a good idea.
It looks like this bug has a long history:
 https://trac.torproject.org/projects/tor/ticket/9353
I don't really understand all the details (I just know it happens), but it
disables the user of Tor on all users on Ubuntu until/unless they implement a
workaround.

[Bug 1272032] Re: Tor Browser Bundle on Ubuntu 13.10 is useless until/unless one manually kills the ibus process

2014-01-24 Thread Damico
Reading all the comments of that bug, it seems that something in Debian is
the culprit - but nobody knows what yet.
Here's the latest append, to that bug, for example:
- quote -
Is anyone on Ubuntu 13.10 brave enough to try installing the Debian ibus and
dbus packages (one at a time, so we know which is the culprit) to see if they
fix this issue? You can download them from
http://ftp.ca.debian.org/debian/pool/main/d/dbus/dbus_1.7.10-2_amd64.deb and
http://ftp.ca.debian.org/debian/pool/main/i/ibus/ibus_1.5.4-1_amd64.deb, but
you may need to also pull in several dependencies and ibus input method
subpackages too.

The reverse (trying the Ubuntu 13.10 ibus and dbus packages on Debian/testing)
would also be helpful. An https version of the ubuntu pool can be found at
https://mirrors.kernel.org/ubuntu/pool/main/.
