[Bug 1319369] Re: PicoLCD 256x64 usbhid error

2014-06-01 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Kieran Kunhya, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better.
Could you please test the latest upstream kernel available (3.15-rc7) following
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional
upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've tested the upstream
kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this
bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For
example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-3.15-rc7

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next
to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please
remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's
Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your
understanding.

[Bug 1325441] [NEW] adding menu entry does nothing and gives no feedback

2014-06-01 Thread Karl-Philipp Richter
Public bug reported:

Adding a new menu entry, e.g. with name `jabref` and command `java -jar
/home/richter/JabRef-current.jar` does nothing, no warning are displayed
in a dialog or added to console where `alacarte` is invoked (standard
behavior should be that fatal error are printed to console). Either the
addition of entries should work or a feedback given to the user.

Public bug reported:

At least, on the newest Ubuntu (14.04) and newest alacarte (3.10.x)
versions, all the Wine-shortcuts will appear to "All Applications"
-menu, but not in the Wine-submenu after running Wine shortcuts rebuild
command:

export WINEPREFIX=~/.wine; find $WINEPREFIX/drive_c/ -name "*.lnk" -exec
wine winemenubuilder '{}' \;

[Bug 1325298] Re: [Lenovo ThinkPad R61i (7650)] Fan not speeding up on high temperatures

2014-06-01 Thread Andre
I am really sad, I tried to boot with the following kernel:
linux-image-3.15.0-031500rc7-generic_3.15.0-031500rc7.201405251935_amd64.deb
and the result was losing the screen functioning. I tried to boot twice, but
both times, after a really ugly green stripes screen and Ubuntu loading for
some seconds, the screen went blank, without the pointer. I tried to switch to
tty1 but with no result. After that I even had difficultes reaching the GRUB,
but anyhow I was able to boot into the repository kernel. I'm going to
uninstall that kernel, so if you could suggest me a safer one I would follow
your advice, but I really wouldn't like to encounter this problem again!

when upgrading from 14.04 to 14.10?

[Bug 1307794] [NEW] [HP Compaq nx6320 Notebook PC] CPU frequency scaling not available

2014-06-01 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

On login, I am presented with a dialogue stating that frequency scaling is not
available for my hardware. Also, the frequency scaling applet informs me of the
same. This contradicts the physical characteristics of the CPU, which does
support frequency scaling. This page informs me that Intel SpeedStep technology
is available for the CPU I am using:
http://ark.intel.com/products/27253

At boot, i get the following messages:
 * Loading cpufreq kernel modules...

[Bug 1306847] Re: Ubuntu 12.04.04 LTS can't resume from automatic suspend. Wi-fi on.

2014-06-01 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Kunal Sangwan, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better.
Could you please test the latest upstream kernel available (3.15-rc7) following
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional
upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've tested the upstream
kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this
bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For
example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-3.15-rc7

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next
to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please
remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, firstly, please add the following
tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

Secondly, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Thirdly, could you please provide the missing information following
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend ?

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's
Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your
understanding.

[Bug 1300798] Re: LXDE shutdown menu needs to check CanSuspend/CanHibernate

2014-06-01 Thread A. Eibach
to comment 2 :

"Yes, we disable hibernation by default in policykit-desktop-privileges.
LXDE's session menu needs to check whether suspend or hibernation is
possible (CanSuspend/CanHibernate) before offering it, similar to GNOME
and Unity's session-indicator."

Exactly my opinion! DO NOT DISPLAY "Hibernate" if CanHibernate is set to
false! Just omit it. When there is no permission, it must not show up
and then output this ugly error to the user (which normally will only be
useful to power users anyhow).

[Bug 1189721] Re: Ralink RT3290 needs bluetooth driver

2014-06-01 Thread Høst
@firesock (firesock-ml)

I installed that driver a lot of times (and still I can't get it
working). I always do this when I want to uninstall it:

First, blacklist rtbth and reboot. Add "rtbth" at the end of this file and save:
  sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
If you blacklist the driver it will not load at every startup and the shutdown
time will be less.
But if you want to clean your system, you can delete it completely:
Delete the driver with the commands that the dkms package includes
(post_remove.sh).

#rm /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/49rtbt
#rm /usr/bin/rtbt
#rm /etc/modprobe.d/ralink-bt.conf

[Bug 1263249] Re: [Input methods] Keyboard stops working after Ctrl+Shift+U followed by 7 alphanumeric keys

2014-06-01 Thread Egmont Koblinger
To be absolutely clear: The keys have to pressed when the focus is in an
input field, that is, where you'd normally type something. E.g. a
gnome-terminal. Pressing Ctrl+Shift+U enters a special mode where you
type a Unicode character by its hex code. If you type at most 6 digits
and then press Enter or Space, the typed value is converted to a Unicode
character of that codepoint. E.g. press Ctrl+Shift+U, type 4000 and
press Space, you'll see a Japanese or Chinese (I don't know, sorry)
symbol. But if you press Ctrl+Shift+U, followed by 7 digits, you'll see
a nasty lockup. (Be sure to save all your data before!)

[Bug 1287127] Re: Linux-image 3.11.0-17-generic can't boot

2014-06-01 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Anders Bruun Olsen, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu
better. As per http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4481#bios
an update to your BIOS is available (F9). If you update to this following
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BiosUpdate does it change anything? If it
doesn't, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the output of
the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so
posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful.

For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette
.

Thank you for your understanding.

[Bug 1263249] Re: [Input methods] Keyboard stops working after Ctrl+Shift+U followed by 7 alphanumeric keys

2014-06-01 Thread Egmont Koblinger
Dear Christopher,

Seeing that Ubuntu developers did nothing to locate this bug other than
you guessing this might be a hardware issue – which was not an
unreasonable guess, but I already proved wrong a long time ago – I
finally took the time to locate this. I found which package causes the
problem, located the bug in the source code, explained why it is buggy,
and – even though I did not mention this – created for myself a one-line
proof-of-concept patch (not suitable for mainstream commit), recompiled
and installed the ibus package, and saw the bug indeed gone.

Please stop assuming it's a hardware or bios issue. It is absolutely
clearly not.

Instead, please repeat the same steps I described in the original report
on your default Ubuntu installations. I'm pretty sure you'll face the
same behavior. (And in the unlikely case that you don't, you should
clearly state this.) Thanks!

[Bug 1289977] Re: Ubuntu 14.04 Update breaks grub, resulting in "error: symbol 'grub_term_highlight_color' not found"

2014-06-01 Thread Dale Rekow
I see a lot of activity on this subject and as an end user I am going to
try 13.10 now since 14.04 failed to install on a clean machine. If I
have to go through all the extra trouble to install this version on a
clean machine then what is the point of installing it to begin with. It
has been years since I have used linux and back then my preference was
Red Hat but I wanted to get back into linux again and after reading
several posts Ubuntu was ranked high.

My process:
Installed from a USB drive. I followed the instructions for creating the USB
drive directly from the Ubuntu web site.

The installation process was painful. I kept getting an error with
nothing but "?"'s repeated. Finally got the install to work only to
reboot to a black screen which led me here. I can't say for sure if it
is a bug or not but it is a pain to me.

My system: Intel Server Board S2600GZ
RAID array: 2 drives mirrored
Dual Xeon quad core proc.
64 GB RAM

If 13.10 doesn't work I will move to another distro for testing
purposes. I hope this was of some help to someone and if not, my
apologies for wasting space on here.

[Bug 1286973] Re: touchpad not detected

2014-06-01 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
** Description changed:

The touchpad is not detected as a touchpad but as a normal mouse.
There's no "Touchpad" tab in "All Settings > Mouse and Touchpad". It
works as a normal mouse, but scrolling, "press both buttons at the same
time for middle button" and probably other features don't work.

[Bug 1309578] Re: Ubuntu 14.04 suddenly reboots when booting from Live USB AMD A8 6600k

2014-06-01 Thread magnusfranklin
Workaround! For noobs like me, who just need to get the thing to work
and don't want to root around obscure system settings, this did the
trick: reverting to the Saucy Salamander kernel.

apt-get install linux-image-generic-lts-saucy

... assuming it's in the cache after an upgrade, should be simple.

All the new features in 14.04 seem to work, just stops the eternal
restart process.

The same problem with 14.04 on Lenovo T540p using NVIDIA. It seems if I
am using UltraDock with mouse and keyboard no issues however with
trackpad the coursor may freeze eventually and the only way to fix the

an update to your BIOS is available (62cn40ww). If you update to this

If it doesn't, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the

Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so
posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful.

[Bug 164120] Re: file manager hangs when mounted nfs drive is no longer accessible

2014-06-01 Thread Evan Carroll
Here is the strace, we can see the two calls to readlink which has the actual
path.. A simple `ls` in the directory fails /mnt hangs without even running
umount. This is what I assume is the core of the nautilus symptom people are
ranting about. I think this is also why nfs drives can't umount when
disconnected. I don't know why umount has to ls the parent directory to umount
the location. I can understand it doing so, but I'd expect it the -f option to
just purge the kernel's knowledge of the mount point and move on with life.
That `umount -f` issues an readlink() in cwd, and that an ls with failed mount
hangs is what I assume is the problem here.

[Bug 1278438] Re: [Samsung NP-R580-JT01RU] Backlight don't regulate by hot keys or something else

2014-06-01 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Денис Сологуб, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better.
Could you please test the latest upstream kernel available (3.15-rc7) following
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional
upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've tested the upstream
kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this
bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For
example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-3.15-rc7

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next
to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please
remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's
Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your
understanding.

[Bug 164120] Re: file manager hangs when mounted nfs drive is no longer accessible

2014-06-01 Thread Evan Carroll
I don't think this bug has *anything* to do with nautilus. The after
pulling the plug on the NFS drive anything that tries to access it
crashes, here is the ltrace,

bindtextdomain("util-linux", "/usr/share/locale")
= "/usr/share/locale"
textdomain("util-linux")
= "util-linux"
strrchr("umount", '/')
= nil
umask(022)
= 022
getopt_long(3, 0x7fff4f92f708, "adfhlnrit:O:vV", 0x610460, nil)
= 102
getopt_long(3, 0x7fff4f92f708, "adfhlnrit:O:vV", 0x610460, nil)
= -1
getuid()
= 0
geteuid()
= 0
__cxa_atexit(0x4057b0, 0, 0, -1)
= 0
mnt_init_debug(0, 0x7f71b88abeb0, 2, 1)
= 2
readlink(0x7fff4f92e4c0, 0x7fff4f92d4b0, 4096, 2310)
= -1
__errno_location()
= 0x7f71b8ef97e0
readlink(0x7fff4f92e4c0, 0x7fff4f92d4b0, 4096, -160

Seems as if it makes a call to readlink() which returns -1 indicating an
error (3rd line to last), then it realizes that it has an error. And,
does a readlink in the same fashion setting buffsize to -160, presumably
in whatever handles the error.. I'm confused.

[Bug 1324564] Re: transmission-gtk crashed with SIGSEGV in gnutls_x509_crt_import()

2014-06-01 Thread Paul Gauret
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1304004 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1304004

I guess #1304004 is marked private as it relates to a security package.

Good news is that I found a workaround by downgrading to
libcurl3-gnutls_7.35.0-1ubuntu1. So far Transmission is stable with it even
under high load.
Bad news is that this particular version has a couple of nasty security bugs
and that you have to be extremely careful if downgrading, as this library is
shared with many other applications and that you may be exposed.

I will mark this bug as affecting libcurl3-gnutls and see what its
maintainer thinks. My guess is that the security fixes recently applied
somehow break Transmission.

[Bug 1325240] Re: Lockscreen bypass with empty or wrong password

2014-06-01 Thread Theor
Thank you. As mentioned, I find the choice of using "sufficient" instead
of "optional" questionable (though I might have overlooked a reason for
it). It forces the PAM scripts to exit without 0 unlike the previous
version, and makes it very easy to open a large security hole for people
who will reuse their existing PAM scripts, or take them from the web, or
who simply haven't paid attention to the postinst added config line.

Unless there's a very good reason for it, I would suggest the postinst
script to default to the traditional "optional" argument as a more
secure choice. The choice is yours, obviously.

That seems entirely unrelated to minimizing applications on Mint.

[Bug 1313531] Re: Huge Wallch icon in Xubuntu 14.04

2014-06-01 Thread Zoran Valentak
Yep I know about this fix, but the problem is that Skype icons used for
the system tray aren't easily accessible. From what I gather they are
somehow embedded into the executable or something like that, that's what
I read after all. For now I found a temporary fix by increasing the
panel thickness so that all the icons are equally big

[Bug 1309919] Re: Xorg causing 100% cpu load

2014-06-01 Thread Brian Knoll
Just a note that I am seeing this problem as well, here on an AMD 8350
8-core system using Trusty 14.04 AMD64. The Xorg process takes about
20%-35% of one core, when the system is otherwise idle. I'm open to
suggestions regarding how I can dig deeper to determine the cause,
because obviously killing the Xorg process isn't an option (or I
wouldn't be running it in the first place). As an experiment, to see if
it would help to restart X, I did try killing the process then logging
back in with the new Xorg process, but the CPU usage was the same as it
was before.

Any suggestions are welcome, and I am willing to help debug this.

Thanks,
Brian

One very simple and quick solution would be to resize the png icons

[Bug 1325418] [NEW] UnicodeDecodeError in checkFreeSpace on 13.10=>14.04 upgrade

2014-06-01 Thread Odin Hørthe Omdal
Public bug reported:

Steps:

 1. Use a locale that has an LC_NUMBER with a no-breaking space (or some other
non-ascii character)
 2. Have too little space on one mount (for me it was /boot)
 3. Can't do release upgrade to 14.04 (well, not getting any error message)

I sent a patch upstream[0], but I don't know if it'll be accepted, and
also, this won't really help unless the package is updated on the
versions people upgrade from.

  [0]

I suggest instead that you code around it in the trusty upgrade script.
The offending line is the apt_pkg.size_to_str(). Instead of using that
bare, you should prepend a `.decode('utf-8')` to it.

I don't know where the code for that trusty tarball is held, so I don't
have a patch. But I can do that if you tell me where. (should be a
simple fix though).

[Bug 1325240] Re: Lockscreen bypass with empty or wrong password

2014-06-01 Thread Theor
Thank you for your answer. What motivated the decision to add a
"sufficient" line to common-auth during the post-install?

Many pamscript examples over the web exit with 0 (explicitly or
implicitly), so defaulting the setting from "optional" to "sufficient"
may open some security holes, as it did with me.

This is a mere suggestion, it may be technically more justified to
default to sufficient.

Also facing the same bug. Bug #1304004 does not exist or is maybe
private.

Core was generated by `/usr/bin/transmission-daemon --log-debug -f --config-dir
/var/lib/transmission-'.
Program terminated with signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.

[Bug 1263249] Re: [Input methods] Keyboard stops working after Ctrl+Shift+U followed by 7 alphanumeric keys

2014-06-01 Thread Egmont Koblinger
Gtk+ apps: Reproducible with GTK_IM_MODULE=ibus and with
GTK_IM_MODULE=xim. Not reproducible if GTK_IM_MODULE is unset before
launching a Gtk+ app [I guess Ctrl+Shift+U is handled by Gtk+ in this
case, rather than the X Input Method].

xterm: Reproducible with the default XMODIFIERS=@im=ibus, not
reproducible after unsetting this variable [in this case Ctrl+Shift+U
has no special effect].

Really looks that the bug resides in X Input Methods.

** Summary changed:

- [Samsung NP300E5Z-S07HU] Keyboard stops working after Ctrl+Shift+U followed
by 7 alphanumeric keys
+ [Input methods] Keyboard stops working after Ctrl+Shift+U followed by 7
alphanumeric keys

The package in oneiric-proposed was moved to -updates, and another fix
for oneiric has not been committed, so removing the verification-needed
