[Bug 871325]

2014-07-27 Thread Mar-castelluccio
Paolo, this is an Unity-only solution, on other DEs we'll still need to
display a notification (we could use libnotify in the other cases, but
it's still a notification :D).

[Bug 1215733] Re: cups config files cannot deal with symlinks and/or other filesystems

2014-07-27 Thread joosteto
Many thanks to Peter Teuben, and for finding that the cause of the 'permission
denied' actually is the symlink from /usr/share to /home.
I can say the symlink also causes cups to fail in Ubuntu 14.04 (Trusty Tahr)

It still has this bug.

I worked around it by using k3b to Copy Disc to the hard drive as an iso.
Then mounted the iso and used HardBrake to rip the contents.

[Bug 1347405] Re: Atempting 14.04 install into LVM striped drives 'grub-install /dev/sda' failed

2014-07-27 Thread Alex b
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1059827 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1059827

Hi Guys,

The first issue was the partitioning left no room for the grub on /dev/sda as
Philip mentioned.
( I no longer get grub-install /dev/sda' failed ) Thanks Philip

Now the original setup does work... if its not encrypted.
The desktop installer does not insert the request for password in the grub boot
to unlock the LUKS partitions so that the LVM system can be seen. The boot now
fails on waiting for the encrypted disk.

Since this is a different issue, I'll see if I can convert this to a question.
Perhaps someone has done this before?

 # Encrypted partitions /dev/sda3 /dev/sdb3
 # /sda2 is /boot partition non-encrypted non-LVM

  pvcreate /dev/sda3
  pvcreate /dev/sdb3
 sudo vgcreate Stripe2SSD /dev/sda3 /dev/sdc3
 sudo lvcreate -i 2 -I 256 -L 247000M Stripe2SSD -n root
 sudo lvcreate -i 2 -I 256 -L 2M Stripe2SSD -n swap

 # manual install and Assigned the /, swap. /boot
Boot fails waiting for device ( the encrypted partition )

Thanks for your help!

PS,
The mini.iso does not seem to support stripe -i -I setup to get the speed of
raid0 and the flexibility of LVM.
Am I missing something?

[Bug 1311403] Re: Can't type password after resume.

2014-07-27 Thread Jeremy Cooper
I'm new to the Ubuntu community, however I just experienced this behavior from
Unity. However in my case I didn't have to fully suspend the computer.
In my case Ubuntu put my monitor into power save mode.
When I moved my mouse to wake my screen back up I was at the lock screen,
clicked into the password box (currsor appeared) and began to type, nothing was
being entered. I clicked the control icon in the top right then back into the
password entry field, it began to recognize characters and let me back into my
session.
Once I was in I saw it had put my password into my last clicked on text entry
box (a Facebook chat). Definitely a security risk.
The other applications I had open were terminal (ssh'd into a server), document
viewer (pdf), had an audio stream playing in a flash based player.
I've only been using Ubuntu for about a week and this is the first time I
experienced this issue.
The only recent (past couple days) I made was installing flash player.
Just sharing my experience in case it's of any help.

Your upgrade log says:

No such font or not readable by grub:
/boot/grub/unicode.pf2GRUB_GFXMODE=1024x768

This is not a bug in grub. You have a corrupted /etc/default/grub file
on disk, apparently a bad 'GRUB_FONT' line. You will need to correct
this file to finish your upgrade.

[Bug 1303736]

2014-07-27 Thread Stephen Michael Kellat
I'm sorry Yotam. Linux Mint 17 Qiana with an Xfce 4 desktop is not the
same as Xubuntu. The folks behind Mint may not necessarily keep in sync
with us as to package versions and any Stable Release Updates. We also
do not directly support them.

Update:

Another workaround: change the language in the upper right corner, in my
case switch from En1 to En2. After that, the password box accepts
keyboard input and shows corresponding dots.

[Bug 1349176] [NEW] i8kmon won't work on Dell Inspiron 7720 (causes lag)

2014-07-27 Thread Marcel Henrique Bertonzzin
Public bug reported:

lsb_release -rd

My CPU keeps overheating from time to time... the fan gear up and slow down in
cycles and the lag makes the machine unusable, it's worst when I'm using
Firefox to watch some Flash video (using the HTML5 player), but the problem
also occurs when nothing special is running. During the lag htop doesn't show
any process using all CPU capacity.
When I stop sudo service i8kmon stop and sudo i8kfan 2 2 I get -1 2 and
everything goes back to normal.

The attached image is the psensor graph after logging in (passing
lightdm).

My machine is a Dell Inspiron 17R SE 7720, with an GT650M video card
(Optimus technology) that I'm using with Prime+nouveau.

Please let me know if any other information can be useful.

[Bug 1349179] [NEW] Frequent temporary UI freezes and 100% CPU usage

2014-07-27 Thread Einheit
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu Release: 14.04.1 LTS
Enigmail version: 1.7-0ubuntu0.14.04.1
Thunderbird version: 31.0+build1-0ubuntu0.14.04.1

My Thunderbird/Enigmail setup was working perfectly well until the
recent update. Now, whenever I enter an IMAP inbox subfolder I can
navigate to the first message just fine, but as soon as I click another
message the CPU spikes to 100% and the UI freezes for a few minutes
before returning. However, as soon as I begin to click around again, I
get the same thing again. It's quite unusable. In addition, I seem to be
able to click around in messages within the inbox just fine without a
freeze, but as soon as I leave the message list pane to do something
else, I get a freeze. None of this behavior occurs if I disable the
Enigmail extension. I tried using a new Thunderbird profile, but that
didn't change anything. I'm not sure what kind of diagnostics would be
useful here, but I would be happy to provide.

Previously, I said everything's working ... ... ... but not !

As explain above, I just downgraded linux-firmware from 1.127.5 to
1.127.4 but a new problem appears during a synchronization : network was
completely blocked.

Finally, I reinstall Ubuntu 14.04 LTS because the downgrade of language-
selector-common wanted remove unity-desktop !

After the reinstall, the current package in use is linux-firmware
1.127.5.

At this time, the wireless works ... (...for how long ?)

I'm a little disappointed because I try to look after the operating system
avoiding to install or compile any external program.
For more, my hardware is certified for the current Ubuntu version (see:
http://www.clevo.fr/ ).

Have I to reinstall Ubuntu each month to avoid upgrade bugs ?

[Bug 1349051] Re: Cannot stop cups-daemon, cups-browsed servers after upgrading certain packages 14.04

2014-07-27 Thread Corey Hollaway
** Description changed:

Cups needs to be taken out of a default Ubuntu installation!
(I don't know where to put this message, but here seems OK)
+
+ The cup lib packages upgraded:
+ cups-bsd_1.7.2-0ubuntu1.1_amd64.deb
+ cups-client_1.7.2-0ubuntu1.1_amd64.deb
+ cups-common_1.7.2-0ubuntu1.1_all.deb

When I upgraded some cup lib packages (not cups-daemon or cups-browsed), I
couldn't stop cups:
  sudo stop cups
sudo stop cups-browsed # they both say they've stopped..
sudo netstat -tapd #they're still running grrr

Funny I had the same problem with 13.10

  I'm running a Xubuntu 14.04 LiveUSB.

[Bug 1349193] [NEW] package mysql-server-5.5 5.5.38-0ubuntu0.12.04.1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2014-07-27 Thread Weedy101
Public bug reported:

I had mysql 5.5 installed and working fine, then I received a notice
that I did not understand about my system no longer being fully
supported and asking me to update. This caused a kernal file update
which failed. Since than I have not been able to get my mysql server to

mysql components and then re-installing it again. The un-install
appeared to be fine, but I cannot install the meta package that installs
the required components again. I get the above error every time.

Modem can not be initialized by using modem manager. wvdial option is
working for the modem.

In the wvdial conf modem port seems as /dev/ttyUSB0 (working port)
according to trial but in modemmanager gui it seems as /dev/ttyUSB1

Working wvdial.conf:

[Dialer 3g]
Init2 = AT+CGDCONT=1,IP,mgb
Modem Type = Analog Modem
Baud = 115200
New PPPD = yes
Modem = /dev/ttyUSB0

Password = internet
Username = internet
Auto DNS =1

[Dialer pin]
Modem = /dev/ttyUSB0

[Bug 1292118] Re: virtualbox-dkms 4.1.12-dfsg-2ubuntu0.6: virtualbox kernel module failed to build [error: incompatible types when returning type ‘kuid_t’ but ‘RTUID’ was expected]

2014-07-27 Thread Jørn
Hi again

Something came up.

I did fix it as described above,- but:

I use wireless network to my Ubuntu,- and bridged network setup in the
virtualbox options for the VM hosts.

When I ping something from the terminal, now I get duplicate answers?

Very strange, and it must be in connection with the repair described as
above.

I will look further into it tomorrow.

B.R.
Jørn

[Bug 1349180] Re: Updating repositories caused crash

Okay, was your networking actually active when you attempted your
previous action? Failure to find security.ubuntu.com is not necessarily
a problem with the release upgrader package but potentially a glitch in
your networking beyond the individual computer.

[Bug 1293384] Re: Compiz CPU usage dramatically increased in Ubuntu 14.04

2014-07-27 Thread Duke
Not a power user here, but I know when my machine is stammering while
silent. System monitor revealed 45% cpu usage idling on the desktop.
Moving cursor pushes it to 100%. Ran 11.4 previously, but support ran
out and things started to fall apart. 14.04 is only OS on drive that ran
11.4 and xp pretty well. Celeron M 1.7ghz. (Old inspiron 600m) 2gb ddr2
333mhz. If my registering this helps escalate the issue I have surpassed
my stature in geekdom.

[Bug 1310023] Re: 14.04: Nvidia Prime is unable to switch to the Nvidia card

2014-07-27 Thread hamish
strangely a custom symlink for nvidia_drv.so in /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/
and changing
  sudo update-alternatives --config x86_64-linux-gnu_gl_conf
from nouveau to nvidia-331 kept on being undone in the filesystem. Quite
unexpected for
those changes to undo themselves. ?!

Anyway, after removing the nvidia-prime and bbswitch packages from my system
that's no
longer happening, so I guess I can blame them. :)

I still don't have multi-head working but at least the nvidia driver is found
in Xorg.0.log now, so
I guess the rest is up to me, xorg.conf, and Xinerama or modern equivalent, and
I can stop
spamming this ticket.

regards

[Bug 1349208] [NEW] New version of firefox crashes upon opening

2014-07-27 Thread Scott Cowles Jacobs
Public bug reported:

Well, I still have the problem that when I try to install a newer version than
28.0.xxx, Firefox never finishes loading up my windows and tabs and crashes ==
is unusable, but this time is different from 29 and 30.
In versions 29 and 30, it opens up all my windows, is brings up some or all of
my tabs, and then disappears and the Crash Report window appears.
In 31, only one window appears, with many tabs all labelled new, and then
just sits there.
I click on a tab, a window appears, and then the ubuntu window appears that
says the window Mozilla Firefox does not seem to be responding and gives me
the option to kill the process or not.

Oh wait a minute - I tried a second time, and after the single window with
new tabs appears, after a bit the tabs get names, it tries to open up the
other windows and crashes to the Crash Report window, as before with 29 and 30.
[Each time with the Restore Previous Session window to start]

I'll try a third time, to see if anything different happens...

Nope, just like #2 - I do note that NOT all of the windows were opened
before FF disappears and the Crash Report window appears.

Back to 28. Again.

[Bug 1338404] Re: bbswitch: fails to find ACPI handle for discrete card

2014-07-27 Thread hamish
probable reason for confusion:

The X/Config/HybridGraphics page in the Ubuntu Wiki does not define what
hybrid
means, and indicates that nvidia-prime is the right thing to use for multihead
workstations with both integrated and discrete video, at least by my reading of
the introduction.
...
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Config/HybridGraphics

specifically the Hardware Requirements section, which could be
interpreded as covering desktop setups as well.

[Bug 1335659] Re: [Acer Aspire 5734Z] suspend/resume failure [non-free: wl]

2014-07-27 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Alan, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. Could you
please test the latest upstream kernel available from the very top line at the
top of the page (not the daily folder) following
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional
upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've tested the upstream
kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this
bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For
example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-3.16-rc6

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil
icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's
Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your
understanding.

[Bug 1341387] Re: Opening foodnetwork.ca website crashes xserver

2014-07-27 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
Seems to be a font issue: the crash always happens as the page tries to
load objects from fonts.smdg.ca. I considered blocking smdg.ca with
NoScript but the site becomes unusable. Could this be a duplicate of Bug
#738526? I always get an X crash the first time I load the page after
reboot. If it just kicks me to the login screen I can try again and it
works. A few times the crash has been bad enough that I end up at a
blinking cursor instead of the login screen and I reboot with Ctrl-Alt-
Del. If I go back to the website after a reboot, X crashes again.

[Bug 1338412] Re: [HP Pavilion Slimline 400] HIGH failures found in fwts klog test

2014-07-27 Thread Alex Hung
This is a common error and I quote Ivan's analysis on a private bug:
=
More detail information,
This is caused by the wmi driver(hp-wmi.c) brings the input data 160bits
struct bios_args {
u32 signature;
u32 command;
u32 commandtype;
u32 datasize;
u32 data; --- 4 bytes data
};
into the the acpi method HWMC as Arg1,
Method (HWMC, 2, NotSerialized)
{
CreateDWordField (Arg1, Zero, SGIN)
CreateDWordField (Arg1, 0x04, COMD)
CreateDWordField (Arg1, 0x08, CMDT)
CreateDWordField (Arg1, 0x0C, DSZI)
CreateByteField (Arg1, 0x10, D008)
CreateByteField (Arg1, 0x11, D009)
CreateByteField (Arg1, 0x12, D010)
CreateField (Arg1, 0x80, 0x0400, D128) --- 128 bytes
.
 }

the error occurred because the mismatch between the 4bytes data provided, but
the firmware 128 bytes D128 used.
checking with the HP wmi spec, several wmi command type used input date 128
bytes (such as type 36h, Set Peak Shift Times, type 37h Set Battery Charging
Times). But this is not used by the hp-wmi.c. It is not reasonable to
CreateField for 128bytes at the method beginning, in stead, it should be
createfielded while it is used.
So I suggest the firmware should move the
CreateField (Arg1, 0x80, 0x0400, D128)
into the place that D128 is used, such as the type 36h, 37h.
If (LEqual (CMDT, 0x36))

move to here CreateField (Arg1, 0x80, 0x0400, D128)
Store (\_SB.WMID.SPST (D128), Local2)

}

If (LEqual (CMDT, 0x37))
{

[Bug 1338412] Re: [HP Pavilion Slimline 400] HIGH failures found in fwts klog test

2014-07-27 Thread Alex Hung
This needs to be fixed in BIOS, but it is difficult, if not impossible,
to get HP's attention to fix after product shipment. Fortunately, very
few hp-wmi functions are used with kernel 3.13, and we probably will not
see any failure except the the error messages.

Having say that, we still try harder to get HP's attention when this is
in development cycle instead of won't fix it. I will try to figure how
we can improve this.

[Bug 1339998] Re: [Dell Latitude 12 Rugged Extreme 7204] Microphone mute key does not work

2014-07-27 Thread Hui Wang
Please do the test under ubuntu-14.04 as below:

generate a file named 60-dell-mic-mute-hotkey.hwdb and place the file at
/etc/udev/hwdb.d/

add the content below into the 60-dell-mic-mute-hotkey.hwdb:
# Dell platform kernel driver
keyboard:name:Dell WMI hotkeys:dmi:bvn*:bvr*:bd*:svnDell*:pn*
 KEYBOARD_KEY_150=f20   # Mic mute toggle

Then run the command below to update the udev database:
sudo udevadm hwdb -u

then re-test mic mute function on this machine or use showkey -k to test

This should fix the mic mute hotkey problem, but it can't help to fix the mic
mute led problem, to fix mic mute led problem, it needs kernel driver
modification. Let's look at if the above fix can fix the hotkey problem or not.

2014-07-27 Thread Seth Arnold
Thank you for using Ubuntu and taking the time to report a bug. Your
report should contain, at a minimum, the following information so we can
better find the source of the bug and work to resolve it.

Submitting the bug about the proper source package is essential. For
help see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . Additionally,
in the report please include:

1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'cat /etc/lsb-release' or System -
About Ubuntu.
2) The version of the package you are using, via 'dpkg -l PKGNAME | cat' or by
checking in Synaptic.
3) What happened and what you expected to happen.

The Ubuntu community has also created debugging procedures for a wide
variety of packages at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures .
Following the debugging instructions for the affected package will make
your bug report much more complete. Thanks!
