[Bug 1373985] [NEW] unity8-dash doesn't seem to get activated after we leave the lock screen

2014-09-25 Thread Daniel d'Andrada
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce the issue:
1 - lock the phone (reboot or have the display off and then turn it back on)
2 - type you password [you're brought to unity8-dash]
3 - tap on the looking glass icon in the top right [search bar text entry shows
up with "Search apps" written on it]

Expected outcome:
A blinking cursor caret is displayed on the app search text entry and the VKB
comes up.

Actual outcome:
Nothing happens.

Causing unity-8 dash to be refocused, such as bringing the indicators
panel down and then back up solves it.

[Bug 1373839] Re: Kernel crash IP: [] list_lru_walk_node+0xe3/0x160

2014-09-25 Thread Øyvind Stegard
Judging by the IP and call trace, I cannot say that I remember this particular
BUG or anything like it for the kernel in question. (I
usually check for hints in logs after hard crashes like this one.)

There has been one earlier crash with the kernel in question (not
reported), but the call trace for that has ext4 functions in it. It also
happened seemingly at random and caused a hard freeze. I've attached the
kernel log BUG, even though it might not be related.

[Bug 1373968] [NEW] GUI does not work after update

2014-09-25 Thread steveb
Public bug reported:

After logging into PC today and running the software updater, various
system updates were downloaded. I was promped to restart, which I did.
At reboot, the system would get as far as displaying the login screen.
After I entered my password, the system appears to hang, with no disk
activity. I have a dual monitor system, but only the left monitor is
active, in that it displays a purple Ubuntu splash screen, without the
login box. I have tried restarting a number of times, but the result is
always the same. I can log in by using the advanced options and drop
into the root console.

I am using Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS.
uname -a reports 3.11.0-20-generic #34-Ubuntu SMP Tue Apr 1 20:40:25 UTC 2014

[Bug 1373964] Re: write_files should not be curtin_hooks

2014-09-25 Thread Scott Moser
also might make sense even to just have it available as a command:
  curtin write-files
then the user could explicitly call it at a different stage fairly easily.

We also need to be clear about when it runs. Jtv asked me if he could
use it to write /etc/network/interfaces, and i'm not actually sure if
tha twould stick or if the configure networking would overwrite it with
OUTPUT_NETWORK_INTERFACES.

[Bug 1373964] [NEW] write_files should not be curtin_hooks

2014-09-25 Thread Scott Moser
Public bug reported:

the 'write_files' portion of curtin is currently executed via curtin hooks.
That means that if a OS image provides its own curtin hooks, that would have to
explicitly implement the write_files.

It seems like this might make sense to be always run after the
extraction.

[Bug 1373966] [NEW] Trusted prompt sessions get stuck on screen blank

2014-09-25 Thread Rodney Dawes
Public bug reported:

When a trusted prompt session is open on top of the dash, and the screen
is blanked (either via timeout or pressing the power button to turn it
off), the app which is running in the prompt session disappears upon
turning the screen back on. In some cases, this leaves the dash in a
state where the user is unable to interact with it, and the only
recourse is to reboot or run "restart unity8-dash" if the Terminal or an
adb shell are available. In some cases, this also leaves the app which
was in the trusted prompt session, running in the background, and it
will not get terminated by the system.

To reproduce:

1: Go to the YouTube scope.
2: Scroll to the bottom of the results and tap the "Log-in to YouTube" result
entry.
3: When the online-accounts-ui opens up, turn the screen off.
4: Turn the screen back on and notice the login window for YouTube is gone, and
the dash cannot be interacted with.

So far, I've only been able to do this in the dash, either with the
YouTube log-in, or with the app purchasing flow (which is slightly more
complex to test).

When reproducing this in ubuntu-system-settings-online-accounts, the new
account login window goes away, but it is still possible to interact
with the system-settings UI, so the user can recover by trying to add
the account again, or just quitting system settings.

2014-09-25 Thread Robie Basak

It seems to me that bug 1229713 is a duplicate, or at least that the fix
there will fix the original issue described in this bug. So I've
uploaded the fix from there, as that bug already had a debdiff that
looked good with all the correct SRU information filled out in that bug.

I'll mark this bug as a duplicate.

If I'm wrong, please correct me.

[Bug 1347652] Re: [design] Sort Items in Launcher By Frequency Used

2014-09-25 Thread Vesa Rautiainen
Quite nice idea but I see few problems in it.
The person who reported the bug says that in current implementation it's a hard
to find the item you're looking for. But in current implementation user has a
freedom to organize the launcher items in any order he wants. And by moving for
example all mostly used apps next to ubuntu button at the top user would always
know where to find them.

If we were to add the functionality that items are ordered based on the
frequency in that case the order changes and user might have hard time
to predict where to find the most used items.

Another possible use case can be that user has one particular app he
wants to have an easy and fast access to. For the sake of an example let
say "Call an ambulance app". User uses it very rarely but when he does
he wants to access it fast and wants to be sure where to find it. So he
adds at the top of the launcher to be the first item in the list. Now if
the proposed frequency rule is followed it would gradually move more and
more bottom and user would have no idea where it is at any given time.

Of course it would be possible to make this behaviour optional but we
try not to bloat the system settings with optional component behaviours
but rather have single holistic design to cover all main use cases.

But there is definitely something in this idea and we'll keep it in mind
when improving the launcher experience.

I reported this to Rico this morning, assuming it was a new ubuntu

I was also running 4.3.2 development version direct from libreoffice to test
another issue, version:

Version: 4.3.2.0.0+ Build ID:
b2d54aa61607e477cb4b81f1a70e555ee3adb0af

This was OK, which is why I assumed it was an ubuntu release problem.

I am a little concerned. If this applies on all platforms, then no
databases at all will work with 4.3.2.2, with all that implies.

I have done a little more investigation.

First, on the libreoffice website 4.3.2.2 still seems to be a pre-
release, so I am a little surprised it was release to the ubuntu normal
release ppa.

Secondly, on Windows 64 bit I downloaded 4.3.2.2 from the LO website and
it is OK.

Thirdly, I thought I should download the linux deb 4.3.2.2 from the
libreoffice website. I did, and it works.

So after a very brief series of tests this appears to be an ubuntu
release problem, not a libreoffice problem. Please forgive me if I've
made an error in my checking somewhere, but this issue seemed so serious
for database users that I thought I should progress it as fast as
possible.

"This PPA might contain the release candidate that is assumed to become the
final release even before it is declared so by the Document Foundation (e.g.
usually release candidate 2 for minor updates)."
https://launchpad.net/~libreoffice/+archive/ubuntu/ppa

So nothing surprising there at all, if you read the PPA description.

This is certainly interesting. Normally I would close the bug as NOTOURBUG here
then (because it would be a distro bug only). I have an idea about the reason
though, as I enabled mergedlibs on 4.3.2 and had to move some lib into it to
get rid of circular deps: dbtools -- which sounds like it could cause this
trouble.

Adding distro bug reference.

[Bug 1373946] [NEW] please sync fenics 1:1.4.0.1 from debian unstable

2014-09-25 Thread Johannes Ring
Public bug reported:

This is an attempt to get FEniCS 1.4.0 working in the upcomming Ubuntu
14.10 release. Currently there is a mix of 1.3.0 and 1.4.0 packages of
FEniCS in the Utopic archive:

fiat 1.4.0-1: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fiat
instant 1.4.0-1: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/instant
ufl 1.4.0-1: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ufl
dolfin 1.3.0+dfsg-2build2: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/dolfin
ffc 1.3.0-2: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ffc
fenics 1:1.3.0.1: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fenics

ffc 1.4.0-1 and dolfin 1.4.0+dfsg-4 (after lp:1373575) are in the
proposed archive, so syncing fenics 1:1.4.0.1 from debian unstable is
the final step to get a fully working FEniCS 1.4.0 in Utopic. This will
also fix lp:1353018.

[Bug 975950] Re: Dash - No indication what happens when you press enter

2014-09-25 Thread Ondřej Mikuláš
Completely agreed, ussually, Enter launches top left corner icon, whatever
category it is.
However, if the search is still running, the order may change and the user has
no clue what will happen.

The icon that will get the Enter (probably the top left one) should be clearly
highlighted.
There is no icon highlighted until the user selects one using arrow keys or
mouse which makes it impossible to say what will happen on Enter.

I wish I could be more specific.
It took me 10 hours to figure out what was going on, having to boot
repeatedly the machine each time it hanged.
The configuration I was using worked perfectly well on 12 LTS and the
only change I made to fix the problem after the upgrade is the one I
mentioned.
The same thing happened on a second machine which was configured similarly.
So I concluded that this is a situation that may occurr to others as
well and it could save them some time if they knew a solution.

I could not find relevant documentation about the parameter
 passwd_compat
except that it appears related to Solaris.
I suspect that this is a legacy configuration that has been preserved by
our system administrators since the time we were using Sun machines in
our network.
Possibily this parameter creates some conflicts on release 14 that make
it to hang the machine.
Someone who knows what passwd_compat does should be able to figure out
the cause.

To replicate the problem it should be enough to configure nsswitch like
this:

 passwd: compat
 passwd_compat: ldap

After this, try doing add-user and the machine will hang.

Thank you.
