Should I post some debug output for the Asus Pro52H Notebook, too? In
case that would help: Which logs do you want?

reproduced). I don't know that it's the same as the bug reported for

[Bug 1241867] Re: installing with LVM over old install with LVM results in unable to install bootloader

2014-12-02 Thread Matt Hanyok
Hello! A year later it turns out this is STILL happening. I had a drive
with a 14.04 LTS install on it which had been set up with LVM.

I booted an install USB to do a clean install of 14.04 (had moved the
drive to a different system) and told ubiquity: erase disk and install
ubuntu and use LVM with this install.

It DOES NOT erase the disk when you do this. It seems the installer is
mounting the drive's swap partition, I guess, which is preventing it
from erasing it. And then it tries to install Ubuntu to the old LVM
partition, instead of the actual drive.

The only solution that worked, again, was to boot the system to a live
environment and use dd to write some zeroes to the drive. After doing
this, it installed as expected.

And again: this is not me trying to install grub to a logical volume.
This happens by just telling Ubuntu to erase a drive and install a fresh
copy, where that drive had previously been configured with LVM.

Steps to duplicate:

1) Boot Live CD
2) Install Ubuntu with LVM on a drive
3) Boot Live CD
4) Run installer with option to erase disk and install Ubuntu and use LVM

That's it - I have done nothing else, I'm not trying to set up my own
weird partition scheme.

Expected behavior:

When you click erase disk option, it should unmount anything it has
mounted under the hood and erase the disk.

[Bug 1386257] Re: intel-microcode should be installed by default, when the CPU is GenuineIntel

2014-12-02 Thread Dimitri John Ledkov
@debfx this is precisely why intel microcode package should be
consistently installed and this is done in response to the TSX problem
described before. microcode update is the last resort that vendor has to
correct firmware bugs in the field. microcode update removed TSX
instruction because the implementation turned out to have issues. But
that was not sufficient alone, due to incorrect detection in the user-
space code and the fact that microcode is not updated on most client
systems. This one of the corrective actions going forward to mitigate /
contain similar type of problem in the future.

[Bug 1398595] [NEW] Working printer device communication error (5012)

2014-12-02 Thread David Sprung
Public bug reported:

My Deskjet 1000 series printer doesn't print now. It used to, but HPLIP
confirms a device communication error (5012). I'm using Ubuntu 14.4 LTS
(upgrade) with AMD 64bit archetecture. It worked well up until about 2 weeks
ago. I printed one page perfectly, but the second page failed. I then bought
the newest model of same printer (HP 1010) thinking that the device was the
problem. Same error.
Any help would surely be appreciated here.

Thanks in advance,
David Sprung

P.S. I've tried deleting HPLIP and trying it without: failed. Installed
newest HPLIP: failed. Help! I'm beginning to think it's a software
issue, as my Dad's printer (HP) failed on his machine about the same
time

[Bug 1398596] Re: arm64: optimized copy_to_user and copy_from_user assembly code patch causing unhandled pagefaults

2014-12-02 Thread Craig Magina
Excerpt from the report:

The exact same fixup code is being used for copy_to_user and
copy_from_user.

For the copy_from_user case we want to zero the rest of the kernel
destination buffer when we hit a pagefault reading from user space.

However, for the copy_to_user case we most definitely don't want to
write zeros in the destination buffer when we hit a pagefault writing
to user space! I get unhandled pagefaults here, when copy_to_user is
called:

   0xffc00073c638 +8920: strbwzr, [x6],#1
   0xffc00073c63c +8924: subsx2, x2, #0x1
   0xffc00073c640 +8928: b.ne0xffc00073c638 __hyp_text_end+8920
   0xffc00073c644 +8932: ret

I would suggest re-working the fixup path and testing both fixup paths
thoroughly by placing the system under memory pressure and confirming
that they are both hit.

[Bug 1398597] [NEW] ideapad yoga needs psmouse reload

2014-12-02 Thread Dimitri John Ledkov
Public bug reported:

So, my often made fun of, lenovo ideapad yoga, since sometime in the

If I open terminal and do rmmod psmouse; modprobe psmouse the pointer

[Bug 1396338] Re: [Dell Latitude E7440] Wifi keeps dropping with Intel Wireless 7260

2014-12-02 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Niels Holmgaard, the next step is to fully reverse commit bisect from
kernel 3.16 to 3.18-rc6 in order to identify the last bad commit,
followed immediately by the first good one. Once this commit has been
identified, then it may be reviewed as a candidate for backporting into
your release. Could you please do this following
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection#How_do_I_reverse_bisect_the_upstream_kernel.3F
? Please note, finding adjacent kernel versions is not fully commit
bisecting.

Thank you for your understanding.

[Bug 1397321] Re: All images beyond 3.13.0-34-generic don't boot

2014-12-02 Thread Vlada Macek
It turns out to be problem on my side, though I don't know whether or
how I caused it as I'm not aware I was ever digging in booting stuff.
This is log of my today's dpkg install|purge actions:

18:32:19 install linux-image-3.18.0-031800rc7-generic:i386 none
3.18.0-031800rc7.201411302035

Here I wrote comment #19, that the newest kernel does not boot, but
learned I installed only one pkg out of three.

Here I am making some space on a tight /boot partition:

19:34:34 purge linux-image-3.18.0-031800rc7-generic:i386
3.18.0-031800rc7.201411302035 none
19:35:34 purge linux-image-3.13.0-36-generic:i386 3.13.0-36.63 none
19:35:39 purge linux-image-3.13.0-37-generic:i386 3.13.0-37.64 none
19:36:40 purge linux-image-3.13.0-40-generic:i386 3.13.0-40.69 none

Fully installing kernels for bisection as Joseph asked + the newest one
again:

19:37:32 install linux-image-3.13.11-03131105-generic:i386 none
3.13.11-03131105.201407181735
19:37:41 install linux-image-3.13.11-03131106-generic:i386 none
3.13.11-03131106.201408131735
19:37:51 install linux-image-3.13.11-03131107-generic:i386 none
3.13.11-03131107.201409181736
19:44:14 install linux-image-3.18.0-031800rc7-generic:i386 none
3.18.0-031800rc7.201411302035

Discovering not only NONE of them boot (all fall into initramfs prompt),
but my fallback kernel 3.13.0-34 (that I didn't touch today) start to
run into PANIC, blinking Caps LED, power off-on needed. Took a panic
screenshot.

Able to boot in Recovery mode as always, I removed all tested kernels
and installed the newest distro one again.

20:09:06 purge linux-image-3.13.11-03131105-generic:i386
3.13.11-03131105.201407181735 none
20:09:11 purge linux-image-3.13.11-03131106-generic:i386
3.13.11-03131106.201408131735 none
20:09:17 purge linux-image-3.13.11-03131107-generic:i386
3.13.11-03131107.201409181736 none
20:09:23 purge linux-image-3.18.0-031800rc7-generic:i386
3.18.0-031800rc7.201411302035 none
20:09:23 install linux-image-3.13.0-40-generic:i386 none 3.13.0-40.69

This leaves me with the panicking ver. -34 and (initramfs)-ing ver. -40.

Then I started to experiment as I thought possible errors might be
hidden from me. So I picked -40 in GRUB screen, chose to edit commands
and removed 'quiet' and 'splash' words from line:

linux /vmlinuz-3.13.0-40-generic root=/dev/mapper/xubuntu-root ro
quiet splash $vt_handoff

I was quickly asked for the LUKS passphrase in text mode, then the
system went up and all appears to work.

I have no idea what caused the problem. Luckily I have at least my
system back. Attaching my /boot/grub/grub.cfg just for the record.

Sorry for unintentionally leading the thoughts the wrong way.

Vlada Macek, if you are reinstalling, it would be best to install the
x64 version (not 32-bit) in order to widen the support scope for your
issue.

However, just to clarify, were you able to boot into 3.18-rc7 once you
install all three files?

[Bug 1397553] Re: BUG: unable to handle kernel paging request at ffffec2000000900

2014-12-02 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Solitaire, if the issue is not reproducible in mainline (which the Utopic
kernel is rebased off of) but is in Proposed, then it would appear a downstream
(Ubuntu) issue, not an upstream one. Hence, I'll mark this Triaged for now as
bisecting the downstream Ubuntu kernel to a specific commit tends to end in a
merge base issue noted in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection .

Thank you for your understanding.

[Bug 1390120] Re: Manually set time and date reverts to Automatically on restart (Ubuntu Phone)

2014-12-02 Thread Martin Pitt
What kind of systemd interface is system-settings calling to
enable/disable automatic time? At the moment we install ntpdate, which
hooks itself into /etc/dhcp/dhclient-exit-hooks.d which isn't
configurable. timedatectl's set-ntp command is for a local NTP server
like ntpd or chronyd, but we don't install any on the phone.

[Bug 1389355] Re: systemd-journald crashed with signal 7

2014-12-02 Thread Martin Pitt
Did you actually boot with systemd as PID1? Note that this isn't
supported in Ubuntu 14.10 (only upstart). On current vivid, running
journalctl under upstart just exits cleanly with 1. Can you reproduce
this crash easily, i. e. does it still happen on your system if you run
journalctl? (the stack trace isn't very helpful, I'm afraid).

[Bug 1398623] [NEW] torbrowser-launcher apparmor profiles are broken in ubuntu

2014-12-02 Thread Micah Lee
Public bug reported:

In Utopic, when you install torbrowser-launcher it installs a set of
AppArmor that work fine in Debian Jessie, but are broken in Ubuntu. When
you try running the torbrowser-launcher binary, it fails and AppArmor
errors get logged to syslog.

I think the AppArmor profiles shouldn't be included in the Ubuntu
package until the AppArmor profiles are fixed. The upstream project
version 0.1.7 specifically removes AppArmor profiles when building in
Ubuntu: https://github.com/micahflee/torbrowser-

[Bug 1397918] Re: krillin #169 + cgroups fix, scopes hang / crash / unusable

2014-12-02 Thread Michi Henning
Added unity8, because that might also be involved.

A stack trace would be super-useful, both of the stuck scope, and of
unity-shell.

Do you have any suggestions for how to reproduce?

[Bug 1377624] Re: udev fails without devtmpfs and sysvinit

2014-12-02 Thread Martin Pitt
That still makes no sense -- udev has upstart scripts, so
/etc/init.d/udev should never run under upstart. If you run service
udev start, what does that show? Is that calling the upstart job or the
init.d script?

Do you get this with 14.10 or 15.04 too?

add it as a dependency to the openstack-dashboard package instead of
installing it in the charm.

[Bug 1392292] Re: Clock doesn't update when switching time from manual to automatic

2014-12-02 Thread Martin Pitt
This is all UI, not timedatectl. timedated does nothing which is related
to this, as ubuntu touch uses ntpdate (which isn't really configurable,
it always runs in the DHCP hook). Please also see bug 1390120 which is
the inverse of this.

2014-12-02 Thread Jim Nelson
The Yorba PPA is at https://launchpad.net/~yorba/+archive/ubuntu/ppa but
only has 0.20.2 for 14.04 (Trusty). Our Daily Build PPA
(https://launchpad.net/~yorba/+archive/ubuntu/daily-builds) has 0.20.2
for 14.10 (Utopic), but note the warnings at the top of the page about
that PPA.

[Bug 1398595] Re: Working printer device communication error (5012)

2014-12-02 Thread Ubuntu Foundations Team Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a
specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu
in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source
packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs
about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your
bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.
You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1398595/+editstatus and add the
package name in the text box next to the word Package.

[This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

[Bug 1398622] Re: killproc function in /lib/lsb/init-functions is returning wrong status

2014-12-02 Thread hemantha
** Description changed:

killproc function in /lib/lsb/init-functions is returning wrong status
and pid file is not getting removed by this function.
-

The same issue can be observed with all below releases.

  $ cat /etc/issue
  Ubuntu 14.04 \n \l
  $ cat /etc/issue
  Ubuntu 13.04 \n \l
  $ cat /etc/issue
  Ubuntu 12.04 \n \l

+ Ubuntu is not killing the process, but returns 0.
+
+ But RedHat killproc makes sure that the process is dead before returning
+ 0 otherwise it returns 1.
+
+ Hint:
+ I think below command can help to find out the status of the process.
+
+ /sbin/start-stop-daemon --status $name_param || status=$?
+
