[Bug 1414327] [NEW] Selecting option to disable need for Fn key when using Functions
Public bug reported: This is not necessarily a bug but a request for a minor enhancement. On a laptop (eg Dell XPS 13), there are a number of functions programmed into the funtion keys. These include keyboard brightness, screen brightness, sound volume, playout start/pause etc. These currently need the Fn key to be held down whilst selecting the function. (This often requires two hands to do this.) The Apple MacBookPro has a keyboard option to allow these functions to be selected by simply pressing the keys (F1 - F12) without holding down the Fn key. If one of the F functions is required (as a keyboard shortcut for an application) this is optained by holding down the Fn key as well as pressing the F1 - F12 key. A checkbox on the Systems Settings Keyboard window would be a convenient way of selecting the option. Associated with such keyboard functions is the Backlight Brightness. It would be useful to have a checkbox that allows the actual backlight brightness to be remembered between sessions. Currently, a new session starts up with maximum backlight brightness. In contrast, the sound volume settings seem to be remembered between sessions as a default. Since the Dell is equipped with a webcam, it would be useful to be able to use the webcab to measure the ambient light and adjust the backlight brightness to match. (Whether this is done as a default or is selectable via a checkbox on the Systems Settings Brightness Lock window would be an added enhancement. The Apple MacBookPro provides this facility.) [Bug 1414230] Re: v14.04 screen garbled upon restart with external monitor
apport information ** Tags added: apport-collected compiz-0.9 trusty ubuntu ** Description changed: I have installed Ubuntu 14.04 on a Acer Aspire One 722. Everything works fine on the laptop by itself. But if I connect the laptop to an external monitor (a HDTV in this instance) via a HDMI cable, the display on the laptop screen and on the external monitor work fine: 1) until I close the screen of the laptop while the laptp is still on, let it go to sleep, and then open the screen and restart. At that point the laptop and external montor screens are black with some garbled characters. There is no way to recover the laptop but shut it down and perform a cold boot. 2) and continue to do so if I use the suspend command (from the drop down menu from the top right corner of the screen). The laptop and the external monitor go dark when the computer suspends. Upon waking both the laptop screen and the external monitor work fine. Needless to say closing the lid after using the suspend command makes no difference. Any clues on what could be happening when I close the lid of the laptop to suspend the laptop? [Bug 1340673] Re: SIM PIN Unlock Required dialog shows up after every resume
Same here, also on ThinkPad 420s with the same Ericsson modem. In addition, sometimes after confirming the PIN, it would tell me serial command timed out after a few seconds. [Bug 1414124] Re: install reports unable to install grub to /dev/sdb
I'm opening /dev/sda in hexedit and see 0's for the first 0x3FF0 bytes. Which is exactly the result of dd 1gb of zeros into /dev/sda before starting the install this previous time. Seems installer didn't write any partition table. I'm going to restart the install now that I've booted into the system with a blank partition table on /dev/sda (I'm thinking maybe the installer was working off partition info read at boot. But I don't think this would be the cause of my initial failure as I have initially had a previous partition table on sda I believe and didn't dd any zeros). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1414124 Title: install reports unable to install grub to /dev/sdb To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub2/+bug/1414124/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
