I'm seeing this problem, inside by testing environment, where I do NOT
have any Metadata server...

I tried to reduce the timeout, by creating the following file:

10_ec2_timeouts.cfg:

---
datasource:
  MAAS:
timeout : 50
max_wait : 120
  OpenStack:
timeout : 20
max_wait : 30
  Ec2:
timeout : 20
max_wait : 30
---

But, it didn't worked!

The first Metadaserver "http://169.254.169.254"; was reduced but, the
second Metadata server "http://192.168.122.1"; still have 120s of
timeout!

How to reduce the timeout for all tries that cloud-init will execute?

Thanks!
Thiago

[Bug 1482711] Re: X displays nothing instead of login screen

2015-10-09 Thread Nicholas
Okay so I updated my BIOS. Summary: I detect no change.

On my first restart I tried using the latest kernel I have installed
(3.13.0-63), and got the black screen. I noticed that the backlight
stays off when I get the blank screen. Unfortunately I cannot say
whether or not this is new. I feel that it was the case before, and thus
not new, but I never consciously noticed before.

I then restarted in -58, which is still working so far as I can tell.

The output from the command is:
V1.06
08/10/2012

As per your instructions I will mark this as confirmed.

[Bug 1481507] Re: [MIR] lxd

2015-10-09 Thread Seth Arnold
I reviewed lxd version 0.18-0ubuntu2 as checked into wily. This should not
be considered a full security audit, indeed I reviewed significantly less
code than I would have liked due to time constraints.

This is a much larger codebase than I anticipated; it's much more than
"just" wrappers around lxc libraries. The vendorized code common to Go
programs also drastically contributes to the code size and it's quite
difficult to see which portions may be important to the lxd package.
Breaking apart the dependencies would help future reviews.

That said, I did read through the entire API spec (not the implementation,
sadly) and have only limited feedback to give. lxd appears to sidestep
many of the problems that have plagued OpenStack's Glance by not having
any tenants.

The simplicity in the end-user interface is amazing and frankly I wish
lxd would grow support for qemu/kvm as well. No existing VM management
system is anywhere near this elegant.

The one issue I found that I felt required a CVE was handled very well.

The shell scripts feel poorly-reviewed; shellcheck found many issues, the
most troubling are summarized below.

I think the project (and package) would benefit from a pruning phase; I
have the feeling that some things were simply re-implemented because it
was easy, or existing pieces reused because they already existed, but
dragged along their own dependencies. I think a week or two of looking at
the entire package sources with an eye towards removing what could be
removed would be a benefit to the project.

Go seems an odd choice for a systems programming language; much of its
design seems contrary to working directly with POSIX-defined interfaces.
There seemed to be a lot of code dedicated towards handling the boundaries
between the C world and the Go world and while it read much like other
interfaces (e.g. Python modules implemented in C, Erlang NIFs) it does
seem like there's a lot of ancillary code compared to application code.

Some more specific comments:

- loads of vendorized go code, needs to package dependencies, see
  http://launchpad.net/bugs/1267393 comments 62, 63, 68
- I'm scared of the code to automatically add admin users to lxd's
  interface. It seems dangerous compared to "sudo adduser sarnold lxd ;
  newgrp lxd".
- "lxc config set core.trust_password SECRET" -- this exposes password via
ps, top, etc; examples should use "lxc config edit core.trust_password"
  instead
- idmapset.go ToLxcString() outputs a different format than parse() reads
- getFromMap() enforces UTF-8 encoding on username. How does this handle
invalid UTF-8 in /etc/subxid files? Do any other utilities enforce UTF-8
formatting of this file? Which other utilities may perform case folding?
Do they all perform UTF-8 case folding in this fashion?
- POST to /1.0/images conflates fingerprint with alias -- I think
fingerprint should always be included for integrity regardless of alias
  presence or absence
- POST to /1.0/certificates has multiple conditionals with "friendly"
fallbacks. I think this is a mistake, I think the client should supply
the certificate and name without friendly fallbacks to using the current
  connection's parameters.
- methods.go LinkUnitFiles() -- does this allow setting arbitrary services
  to start?
- container.go Daemonize() feels very misnamed
- container.go WantDaemonize() feels very misnamed
- container.go WantCloseAllFds() error return ErrCloseAllFdsFailed seems
wrong, the call chain doesn't look like it actually tries to close
anything, and based on the boolean passed in may not even want to.
- container.go ConfigKeys() is confusing, could someone give it a re-read
and make sure it does what it's supposed to do? TestConfigKeys() isn't
  very comprehensive.

Shell Issues:
- ./lxd-bridge/lxd-bridge variable LXD_IPV4_NETMASK vs LXD_IPV4_MASK
mistake. Most variables used in commands need to be "" double-quoted to
force treating their expansion as a single token.
- goproxy/all.bash most variables used in commands need to be
  double-quoted; *_test.go is unsafe with filenames starting with -;
  should use ./*_test.go
- debian/update-wordlists.sh uses "$string interpolation" in printf,
should just use printf directly; should use ./*.txt.list rather than
  *.txt.list
- debian/lxd.postinst add_groups() uses variables that are never passed
in, please add a comment to explain what they are there for

Already raised with stgraber and hallyn:
- doUidshiftIntoContainer() has an unsafe Chmod() call that races against
the stat in the Filepath.Walk() function. A symbolic link created in
that window could cause any file on the system to have any mode of the
attacker's choice. This function cannot be used if any processes from
the uid ranges in question could be executing on the system.
The mode change needs to be done after dropping privileges to the target
  user and group.

- container.go CreateSnapshot(), RestoreSnapshot(), DestroySnapshot(),
  DestroyAllSn

[Bug 1453538] Re: Invisible mouse pointer

2015-10-09 Thread Zhang Weiwu
Pavlo Shchelokovskyy (pshchelo) wrote on 2015-08-12:
> FWIW solution proposed here worked for me
> gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.cursor active false

If it works for you, you probably had a different bug. This bug's effect
start since the login screen, and as far as I know gsettings only
affects the current login user.

In order to be sure, I configured my lightdm to auto-login. I intend to
check if gsettings can make the pointer show up, now that culprit (login
screen) is skipped. It resulted something very weird.

- Cursor would show up on the left side if I move it to the rightmost position.
If I move leftward a bit, it would slip off from left edge of the screen. I
could not click one of the unity tool bar icons because the cursor can go to at
most left edge only, and not a little more right.
- Desktop wallpaper is not showing up. Desktop is black and blank (blank means
no icons)
- Shortcut keys has no response. Super key doesn't call up HUD, and
Ctrl+Shift+T doesn't call up terminal.

Effectively in this limbo status the user has nothing to do but to
restart computer again. I had to manually edit /etc/lightdm.conf to
prevent auto-login again.

Without autlogin, my host behaves exactly as previously described - "no
pointer but click works, restart lightdm helps". By the way the desktop
wall paper, HUD and desktop icons are all back.

[Bug 1425699] Re: kernel panic on IBM Power8 PPC MAAS ephemeral image

2015-10-09 Thread Haw Loeung
We ran into this while setting up an OpenStack cloud using IBM POWER8
machines[1]. Unfortunately, hwe-v for Trusty isn't available
(LP:1504066) but hwe-u does indeed fix the "Oops: Exception in kernel
mode, sig: 4 [#47]" boot loop we ran into.

Since it's been advised here, and in several other bugs that
POWER8/ppc64el doesn't work with the main Trusty 3.13 kernel, perhaps we
could make MAAS images default to hwe-u and above for ppc64el?

The thing is, the old behavior was helpful and user-friendly, and the
new one is neither. The suggestion to read the long log file is not
useful except to an expert (who probably already knows how to read it).
Please return to the previous behavior.

[Bug 1481025] Re: Keyboard shortcut for layout switching works in Unity but not in Gnome-Flashback

2015-10-09 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
@Aron: Since you uploaded the old patch instead of the modified patch I
prepared, there is now a discrepancy between im-config and language-
support-gnome: The former sets "cjkv", while the latter sets "xim". One
of them needs to be changed, and due to the reason mentioned in comment
#15, I think we should change im-config to set "xim".

I tested with "cjkv" on my Unity system. All the variables are empty if
not a CJKV locale, and it lead to a problem with Unity. Now this isn't
intended for Unity, but "xim" appears to be a safer alternative to use
when IBus is not set.

Comments?

[Bug 1487365] Re: Ubuntu14.04 .3 RAID installation fails on firestone

2015-10-09 Thread Steve Langasek
There are multiple related issues here.

 - partman-md does not support assembling a RAID1 array out of a set of whole
disks; it only supports assembling an array out of partitions. It *should*
support using whole disks, so that you have the option of partitioning the RAID
array and having those partitions show through on the underlying block devices
in a way that is meaningful to the firmware.
 - in the absence of such support in partman-md, users are led down the garden
path *thinking* they're creating arrays out of the disks when they're actually
creating full-disk partitions on the component disks and RAIDing those.
partman-prep should warn the user *early* (i.e., at the partitioning stage)
that they've created themselves an impossible-to-boot partition layout, and
guide them to go back to fix it.
 - grub-installer should support installing to multiple PReP partitions in
parallel for proper full redundancy in the face of a disk failure. This can be
achieved in one of two ways:
  - the user can create a RAID1 of two partitions on different disks (e.g.
/dev/sda1+/dev/sdb1 -> /dev/md0), and grub-installer can support installing to
this as a PReP partition; or
  - grub-installer can detect multiple PReP partitions (possibly requiring the
user to manually specify each one that they want to use) and install the
necessary boot record to each of them in turn.

The 2nd and 3rd issues should be relatively straightforward to fix. The
first issue is going to require some redesign of partman-md and is not
something we'll want to take on for 15.10.

Unfortunately, I hit the hard-stop(total freeze) within 2-minutes
of booting into the upstream kernel while I was editing this bug report.

Alas, I feel the need to mark it as existing in the upstream kernel.

[Bug 1240198] Re: [SRU]Wrong keyboard layout active after booting into desktop

2015-10-09 Thread Kazlu
Also happened to me in Xubuntu 14.04, Kubuntu 15.04 and Linux Mint 17.
Occurs on several computers with several keyboards but not all of them :
I have an eeepc which embedded keyboard causes no problem, but some
external keyboards are set in US layout at boot. Very annoying to enter
my password at login...

I worked around this by executing "setxkbmap -fr" at startup, but the
problem is still there at login.

[Bug 1504688] [NEW] fsck runs on every boot (clean install, single ext4 filesystem)

2015-10-09 Thread jimav
Public bug reported:

fsck runs early on *every* boot (and always says "/dev/sda1: clean ...")
The system was always shut down using the regular Unity mechanism (Gear->Shut
Down...)

Strangely, the "Last checked" time shown by "sudo dumpe2fs /dev/sda1"
shows the date of installation and never changes.

This system is a brand new, clean install from the 15.10 beta2 iso, with
subsequent updates.
I took all the installer defaults, which created a single ext4 file system.

Please see attached:

window)

[Bug 1504684] [NEW] Installing XFCE on Ubuntu eventually makes system crawl/stop

2015-10-09 Thread JVene
Public bug reported:

This is on a Fresh install of unbuntu 14.04.3 64 bit from iso.

Then, using the Ubuntu Software Center, installed the Xubuntu Desktop
System.

The OS is installed in VMWare Workstation 12, with vmware tools from the
VMWare distribution (not open vm tools).

At first it runs fine. After a random time frame (sometimes 2 minutes,
sometimes several hours), the response to mouse selection becomes slow.
Clicking a menu item, for example, takes 3 or 4 seconds to get a
response. Then, it escalates until the system is unresponsive.

Repeated the process several times - fresh install of Ubuntu, then
Xubuntu desktop (once I figured out that this wasn't anything else - I
was trying to setup an Eclipse/ADT/Java/Android development system in 64
bits).

I downloaded the Xubuntu 14.04.3 ISO, did a fresh install of that, and
it's fine.

I have Ubuntu 12.04 in both 32 and 64 bit installations, both are fine
using LXDE (they are my previous/working Android development machines,
all VMWare workstation VM's).

It appears that a fresh install of Xubuntu 14.04.3 works fine.

The problem appears to be installing the Xubuntu desktop into a running
Ubuntu (standard Unity) machine.

For a while (a few days) I though it was Eclipse (Luna/Mars/Juno) or
Java (which Eclipse requires), but a fresh attempt revealed the issue
appears with no additional applications installed (tried to narrow this
down).

The Xubuntu installation (that is, from the Xubuntu ISO, not the Ubuntu
with XFCE installed) has no problem running Eclipse (for days the
system is fine).

I did not try an installation of XFCE from any other source on Ubuntu.

Note that the CPU usage is not an issue. The CPU is quiet when the
problem occurs. It appears that one can control applications in a
terminal emulator which perform at reasonable speeds (as expected) even
though the system in not responsive to mouse operation. The cursor moves
without incident, but clicks get no response for long delays (seconds,
and increasing over time until it seems the OS is stuck completely).
Further, attempting to move windows around, or resize, becomes
impossible. The cursor SHAPE, on the other hand, may get stuck - that
is, some mouse over switches the cursor to the hand, but never returns
to the standard arrow, but moves just fine, but scrollbars, menu items,
moving or resize windows - all are very slow or all but stop
functioning.

Atl-TAB to switch windows still works as long as the delay in mouse
response is within about 10 seconds of a click, but eventually that
stops functioning and keyboard input becomes compromised.

Booting the same OS into a Unity desktop session seems to work ok. The
problem does not appear there.

Further, the host operating system operates normally throughout these
incidents. Other VM's running Ubuntu 12 (32 and 64 bit at the same time)
are fine, too. No other VM's are having problems, including VM's of
other operating systems like Windows 7 and 8.

The host is Windows 8.1, 32 Gbytes RAM, Intel Corei7 @ 4 Ghz HT enabled,
HPET fully enabled (both Bios and OS).

[Bug 1504662] Re: ubuntu doesn't start on uefi to use boot repair

2015-10-09 Thread Steve Langasek
What you are describing does not appear to be a bug in the Ubuntu
distribution. boot-repair is not part of Ubuntu. If boot-repair can't
repair the boot of an MBR system and asks you to break compatibility
with the installed OS by switching it to UEFI boot, that is an issue
with boot-repair, not Ubuntu.

** Changed in: shim (Ubuntu)
   Status: New => Invalid

[Bug 1504655] Re: Install defers use of selected keyboard layout

2015-10-09 Thread David Cary
I was not allowed to set the package to debian-installer when I
originally submitted this bug report in Launchpad. I have just now been
able to set the package using the link in the bot-comment.

** Package changed: ubuntu => debian-installer (Ubuntu)

[Bug 1414110] Re: Wireless powersave doesn't work (pm-utils)

2015-10-09 Thread John Freed
This is related to Bug #1299975

It appears that the filename was changed from "enable" to "enabled" and
now back to "enable" again.

So #1299975 needs to be backed out.

Re: [Bug 1503062] Re: installation always crashes

2015-10-09 Thread Doug
Thanks for response. I've created many installation disks and USB
installations. All basically act the same. Wonder if I'm getting bad
downloads. Can you suggest where a good, known clean download can be
obtained? At one time I know it said there were bugs in the installation
file I believe. Would like to get this on my old XP machine for my kids,
that's why was trying edubuntu last time.

[Bug 1473880] Re: Backport Intel 8260 Wifi/BT drivers

2015-10-09 Thread pdf
@penalvch: I'm not sure what useful information ubuntu-bug would include
for this particular issue - the 3.19 driver doesn't support the 8260
hardware is really all there is to it. I've also kind of had to
frankenstein things a little bit on this machine in the mean time, so
results not be representative any more.

@phidias: Good to hear, for now I've just installed the drivers straight
from backports-4.2-rc1-1 because I needed to get up and running.

0ubuntu0.14.04_all.deb/download/ and manually install as a work around.
