[Bug 1526209] [NEW] [regression] Clients of nested Mir servers silently crash/exit instantly

2015-12-15 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Public bug reported:

Clients of nested Mir servers silently crash/exit instantly...

This happens in Mir trunk lp:mir and lp:mir/0.18, but not in lp:mir/0.17

  sudo bin/mir_demo_server_minimal -f /tmp/outside &
  sudo bin/mir_proving_server -f /tmp/inside --host-socket=/tmp/outside &
  sudo bin/mir_demo_client_egltriangle -m /tmp/inside

And the client silently exits with return code 139.

Valgrind or gdb show the problem though:

[Bug 1526220] [NEW] [SKL] Disable display power well

2015-12-15 Thread Timo Aaltonen
Public bug reported:

Display power well can cause issues like blank screen when logging in
after resume from suspend, so it's best to disable it for now like
upstream did in v4.4-rc1:

commit 1b0e3a049efe471c399674fd954500ce97438d30
Author: Imre Deak
Date: Thu Nov 5 23:04:11 2015 +0200

drm/i915/skl: disable display side power well support for now

The display power well support on this platform is in a somewhat broken
state atm, so disable it by default.

This in effect will get rid of incorrect assert WARNs about the CSR/DMC
firmware not being loaded during power well toggling. It also removes a
problem during driver loading where a register is accessed while its
backing power well is down, resulting in another WARN. Until we come up
with the root cause of the second problem and the proper fix for both
issues, keep all display side power wells on.

Also clarify a bit the option description.

[Bug 1496927] Re: [Hyper-V] udev trying to modify owner and mode of /dev/vmbus/hv_vss

2015-12-15 Thread Serge
Hi guys,

there is the same bug in Ubuntu 15.04 with default kernel 4.2.0.19 as well when
using it as vm upon MS Windows Server 2012 (with no R2) with Hyper -V role.
I've downgraded the kernel to the one of version 3.19.0-39 and a high cpu load
has disappeared at all.
Currently a don't see a systemd-udev in the first rank when starting atop.

[Bug 1526208] Re: (Shift)Tab must not leave dialog/popover/menu

2015-12-15 Thread Christian Dywan
** Description changed:

It must not be possible to leave a dialog/popover/menu using (Shift)Tab.
The only expected ways to leave are Escape and any component or key in

container. We could introduce API on StyledItem to expose that and use it in
popovers.

[Bug 1522012] Re: Error finalising statement: Could not finalize statement: database is locked

2015-12-15 Thread James Henstridge
If you run "restart mediascanner-2.0" in the console, it will restart
the existing instance and should see the contents of the bind mount.

Mediascanner uses inotify to track changes to the directories it
watches. I guess the events we're watching don't cover mount
operations. That said, the usual way we handle removable media is to
scan it if it is mounted under /media rather than relying on the user to
perform bind mount tricks.

[Bug 1431149] Re: XFCE 4.12 Black screen after wakeup from suspending by closing the laptop lid

2015-12-15 Thread El
I have the same problem on a fresh install of Xubuntu 15.10.

* Suspending without closing laptop lid is fine.
* Turning off lock screen on sleep makes no difference (screen is black when
opened even without a lock screen).
* Removing light-locker makes no difference.
* Installing xscreensaver makes no difference.
* Problem persists whether I choose lock screen, turn off display or suspend on
action for closing laptop lid.
* xrandr --auto (and switching consoles) works.

[Bug 1516249] Re: file:/ URLs not supported

2015-12-15 Thread Olivier Tilloy
> Other apps, such as the "Document Viewer" seem to be perfectly able to
> see the local filesystem...

Document Viewer is only allowed to see files under $HOME/Documents.

> Same for the terminal app, and any programs started by it

Yes, the terminal app is a special case, and as you’ve probably noticed,
it asks your su password at startup, which should make it really clear
that it has special privileges and is not to be left in everyone’s
hands.

> Why not *make* it an exception?

Because that would allow anyone who gets physical access to your phone
to read any file on the FS, including sensitive information, thus
largely invalidating the security model.

> putting passwords in a file:/// would be one way to work around bug #1516220

Another much safer way would be an app that stores those passwords with
strong encryption and a master password. That would make for a nice
addition to the ubuntu app store.

[Bug 1524122] Re: XPS 15 (9550) Won't boot with 4.4

2015-12-15 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
HillClimber, thank you for taking the time to report this bug and trying
to help make Ubuntu better. However, the upstream kernel is not a
software package provided by the official Ubuntu repositories. Because
of this and as outlined in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds
the Ubuntu project can not support or fix your particular bug. Please
report this bug to the provider of the software package. Thanks!

If you are interested in learning more about software repositories and
Ubuntu, check https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Repositories.

[Bug 1525156] Re: [MIR] geonames

2015-12-15 Thread Lars Uebernickel
We would have ended up with a separate library anyway, because we need
something that doesn't depend on gtk.

I pondered splitting the non-gtk parts out of libtimezonemap at first,
but decided to do a few more optimizations while I was at it:

1. throw away data in cities15000.txt that we don't need
2. compress the data and put into the .so, so that we don't need to open
another file when accessing it
3. move searching for a city into its own thread, so that we don't block the UI
(see bug #1367287)
4. not create a GObject for every city in the database

The library (including the data) is about half a megabyte now. It will
grow by a bit more once I include translations, but it will stay under
the 5 megabytes that libtimezonemap installs. I don't see any reason why
the data should be shared. Just use the library if you need access to
it. I also want to make it possible for us to change the way the data is
stored to allow for more efficient lookups if we find out there's need
for that.

The completion part of libtimezonemap indeed parses cities15000.txt on
startup (and creates an object for each), but only ever uses it when the
request to the web service fails.

[Bug 1525979] Re: Touchscreen interactions should take priority over mouse and disable it

2015-12-15 Thread Andrea Bernabei
This was discussed during today's (15th Dec) team UX review meeting.

The outcome of the meeting was:
- The UX team will start a research project to handle this matter in more
detail.
- We all agreed it makes sense to prevent multiple input devices from being
active at the same time, i.e. mouse disables touch, touch disables mouse. This
is however just a quick consideration done during the meeting, the details have
to be considered as part of the research project described in the previous
point.

** Description changed:

It is possible, at the moment (r199, krillin, rc-proposed), to use both
touch and mouse at the same time.

  Because of:
  - QtQuick's touch-to-mouse events synthesis feature;
  - the fact that most of QML code in this world relies on MouseArea to handle
input (touch as well);
  - the fact that there is no QML component that handles both Touch and Mouse
events and gives the developer a good API to handle both;
  - the fact that making both touch and mouse usable at the same time easily
leads to unexpected and broken UX;

I suggest we make it so that only one input device can be used at any given
time by default (exceptional cases to be handled separately).
Moreover, I think it would be a good idea to give touch events a priority
over mouse events, i.e. mouse stops working when the user touches the screen,
but not viceversa.

I also think the final decision should take into account the conventions the
users are already accustomed to.
I played with a laptop that features touchscreen (Microsoft's Surface) and
Win10, and here's what I found:

  - in the default browser: interacting with the touch stops and hides the
mouse, and gives priority to (multi)-touch gestures. The mouse pointer
stays still (i.e. doesn't follow the fingers). The only way I found that
let me take control of the mouse again was to perform a single tap and
then wait a short amount of time before moving the mouse.

  - in other apps that did not feature special touch handling, interacting
with the touch would still disable the mouse, but in this case the mouse
pointer followed my finger (I guess this is a "if nothing consumes touch
events -> then do mouse simulation")

I believe this bug is a show stopper for the convergent experience.

It is currently possible to trigger flickering and broken UX in multiple
places in Unity8. Basically anything that relies on MouseMove events is
  broken and causes flickering.

  A few examples:
  - username vertical scrolling in the login manager (just drag the username
with your finger and then move the mouse).
  - window positioning (same as above)
  - indicators horizontal scrolling
  - scrolling in ANY Flickable/ListView based views inside applications and
platform menus
  - side scrolling in the Dash
  - etc, etc etc...

NOTE: after a discussion on IRC with Saviq, we agreed that it would be
awesome if MouseArea would be able to handle different input devices. I
already researched this before writing this post, and I didn't see any
way how MouseArea could (with the current APIs) be able to do that. That
means, imho, a looong waiting time before we actually implement such a
feature in Qt itself. Hence I proposed the solution above as a
workaround, while we get all the rest of the pieces working as we
  expect.

[Bug 1223622] Re: add support for crypttab mounting of luks devices with detached headers

2015-12-15 Thread Attila Lendvai
security risk? that doesn't make much sense... in normal installs both
/boot and the luks headers are lying there on the disks unencrypted. i
don't see how packing the luks headers into the initramfs (/boot) could
make that any worse?

i'm not a linux guru by any means, but AFAIU:

  - grub loads the kernel and the initramfs (from /boot, but not as a
normal mount, but as some lower level infrastructure)

  - jumps to the kernel entry point address, passing it the initramfs
as a memory address. at this point nothing is mounted.

  - boot scripts in initramfs start to get executed and reach the
point of mounting rootfs. at this point /boot is probably not
mounted yet, but i don't see any obvious obstacles why it couldn't
be mounted before the rootfs, except that i have no clue about how
linux mount work. rootfs gets mounted as / after all, maybe that's
a headache if there's stuff like /boot already mounted.

thanks for looking into this! plausible deniability is becoming more
and more important now that poeple go to jail even in the the western
"free" democracies for as little as not giving out passwords...

[Bug 1525861] Re: "Online Accounts" isn't properly integrated

2015-12-15 Thread Sebastien Bacher
One easy way to solve it would be to hide the online account section on
!GNOME, UOA accounts are correctly listed under "Other accounts"

** Changed in: gnome-calendar (Ubuntu)
   Importance: Undecided => High

[Bug 871133] Re: Volume Step not changeable in Unity and GNOME desktops

2015-12-15 Thread HEXcube
@darkxst "혵혩혢혯혬혴 혧혰혳 혵혢혬혪혯혨 혵혩혦 혵혪혮혦 혵혰 혢혵혵혢혤혩혪혯혨 혵혩혦 혱혢혵혤혩" . Well, I
didn't do the patch, just attached the patch done by Nathan Osman
(https://launchpad.net/~george-edison55 ). So, it's Nathan who deserves
the thanks for working on a fix. 

퐝퐚퐞퐦퐨퐧 for 14.04LTS, 15.04 and 15.10 currently. I've requested Nathan to
do a port for 16.04 "혟혦혯혪혢혭".
